Shane - Finding where they were in CO Galway is my goal. Only thing I have is John Farrell's dc (~1847 - 1930)that says Ireland as where he was born. His parents were Luke and Ellen Doyle so I'd say Luke was probably born around 1820 give or take.

John's marriage record in Baltimore says he was from CO Galway but nothing more specific.

I've compared where Doyles and Farrells lived from Griffiths and found no common townlands, only common parishes. The most commonality seems to be in Ballynakill parish. (There are a lot of Doyles and Farrells in Killian but several are named Michael and that name has never been used in subsequent generations so I don't think they are my Doyles) But not a Luke Farrell to be found on any list I can find.

Family lure says 3 brothers, Luke, Garrett and John came from Ireland around 1853. The few Lukes I have found in census in USA aren't in the areas I've been told they settled - another strike out. Any thoughts on what to try next? Kate

You'd think with such distinct names as Luke and Garrett my Farrells would be easy to find but NOT so! I know Luke was married to Ellen Doyle and had those three sons. (John is my GGG) Can't find a Luke in Griffiths, the tithe lists, can't find Farrells and Doyles in the same townland, only same parishes which really doesn't narrow it down much. Even the paid records sites don't seem to have any Luke Farrells. ANy ideas on where else/what else I can do?

Please post the info on your John Farrell who married in Baltimore. What census records is he on, when and whom did he marry in Baltimore, MD, where did he die?

I have found several Luke Farrell's with a wife named Ellen in US records. Lots of Garrett Farrell listings also.

Regards, Bettye

"where in the USA do you find your Luke & Ellen Farrell on a census" That is the problem - to my knowledge they never left Ireland, only their sons. Have not found ANY Lukes the appropriate age range in USA with or without wife Ellen. The only son of theirs I have actually been able to track is John Farrell in Baltimore. I have gone over all the passenger lists coming into Baltimore with no luck.

So I don't know when/where they married or died but I have to assume in Ireland - if I knew that I'd know where our John had come from. Not even absolutely positive about his brothers names, Luke and Garrett altho with a father named Luke I'm pretty sure that family anecote is correct. BUT in that same vein - NO other Lukes or Garretts in JOhn's decedents for 3 generations....go figure!

You err when you say that Luke and Garrett are distinct names. There are many listings for them on various US records. You have tossed out tidbits of info but have not given much data to help you in your search.

For instance, where in the USA do you find your Luke & Ellen Farrell on a census? Where and when did they marry - Ireland or USA. What were the names of their children and when were they born? Where did Luke and Ellen die?

Have you searched the passenger index lists? You have ruled out places of possible residence because you do not think that could be your Luke, etc.

Your problem is probably the early dates - few parishes (assuming this family were RC) have records before the 1830s so it could be difficult to locate earlier details. You usually need to know where they lived to check if parish records are available for the timeframe & area your Farrell/Doyle family lived. It looks like your family may have left before Griffith's Valuation (the date of the Valuation varies from county to county, and the Valuation listings dont include everyone).

There may be a record of an 1847 baptism - to give you a starting point. Since you have parents names and approximate year of birth for John you could try searching for his baptism on the pay-website which covers many Co. Galway parishes (google RootsIreland to find it).

They have transcriptions for a number of Co. Galway parishes. Note that early baptism records dont contain much detail - probably just the name of the parish, date of baptism, name of the child, both parents names and the names of two godparents.

Shane

Thomas Farrell married Margaret (Maggie) Lalley between 1890-1900. They had sons Earl Farrell (my grandfather) and "Uncle Lefty" (maybe Leroy?), and perhaps two others. Here's the problem: LOTS of Thomas Farrells married Margarets! I need to narrow down my line, and rule out others. They were in Iowa and Kansas, as I know so far. Can anyone help this beginner?
I'm not sure if we have a connection, but I have a Farrell and Guilfoyle in my family tree. My g-grandfather is Joseph Farrell, who emigrated to Philadelphia around 1880. His marriage certificate, in 1880, lists him as "Peter O'Farrell", but he later began calling himself Joseph Farrell. He was my mother's grandfather, but she had little information on him. His mother's name was Rose Guilfoyle, and he had a sister Delia Farrell (which I've been told is a nickname for Bridget). I can't seem to find his name on any immigration records, or birth records. I do have an obituary for him from 1936, but it does not list his parents. I have his death certificate, which lists his mother as "Rose Gilfile". I would like to know where in Ireland he came from. I found a marriage record for a Rose Guilfoyle in Parsonstown Ireland, but her husband's name is Fieharry, not Farrell. I noticed your information is from a parish in NY. Do you have any information on where your Farrells and Guilfoyles came from in Ireland?

I'm hoping somebody can help me- my Dad is adopted and it says on his birth certificate that his mum's name was Mary Margaret Farrell, a student nurse, living at 57 Fourth Avenue, Birmingham. She gave birth to him at Francis Way Mother and Baby home in Bentley Heath. I dont know anything else about her, so I'm hoping that somebody will be able to shed some light on when she was born etc or maybe somebody knew her?
I'd be grateful for any help
Thanks!

William Farrell & Elizabeth Guilfoyle - marriage & children's births & baptisms; 1862 - 1880

Letter dated 24 November 2004 from Church of St Mary, 440 Grand Street, New York, New York, 10002 (212) 674- 3266 (They also hold the records for St Rose.): …
1) Enclosed are two copies of the baptism records of two of William's and Elizabeth's children. These copies contain the name of the town and/ or county in Ireland where the parents were born.
2) The marriage certificate of William and Elizabeth is enclosed.
3) The parents' date of birth and baptismal information were not found in our records.
4) In reference to Peter's and Mary's family, I was only able to find the baptismal information of one of their children. I only found James Farrell's baptism information. No other information was found.
5) While looking through our records, I found the baptismal information of a Joseph Farrell. His parents were Michael Farrell and Ann Doyle, and his ***godfather*** was William Farrell. I sent Joseph's baptismal certificate to you just in case it might be of help to you.
6) On certain baptismal certificates, Elizabeth's last name was spelled differently. It was spelled as Gillfoyle, Killfoyle, Guilford, Guilfoyle, and Galfoil.
7) On the baptismal certificates, the spelling of William's and Elizabeth's names and their children names were spelled differently. This is because their names were written in Latin, in St Rose's records.
8) On Bridget's and Joseph Farrell's baptismal certificates their parents were William Farrell and Bridget Douey [sic- but spelling varies].
Farrell/Hopkins

My paternal uncle (d 1985) and great grandfather (d 1869) were named Farrell Hopkins. Before my father died in 1981, I asked him why his brother's given name was Farrell. He said that "an Irish lass whose surname was Farrell married an English soldier whose surname was Hopkins".

I find hard to believe that in the late 18th century an Irish lass (Catholic) would be allowed to marry an Englishman (non-Catholic) in County Mayo Ireland.
Recently a fellow Hopkins researcher said that my Hopkins line may have been connected to the Farrell tribe in Rosscommon since my paternal DNA so far does not match any English Hopkins.

I was wondering if anyone ever heard about a Farrell/Hopkins connection.

Also can SKS direct me to early Farrell history in Rosscommon? Hmmm.. just wonder if the Ross West and East townland names near Castlebar is showing a connection?

Thanks.
Nora Hopkins

Hello,
I've had poor luck with obituary searches lately, so I'm happy to see that this one was in the NY Times on August 28, 1984 on Page B7.

It starts with: "FARRELL - Agnes T. Beloved mother of Peggy Farrell. Devoted sister of Peggy McSpirit and Thomas."

(I have never seen the surname McSpirit before - what a great name!)

I've attached a cropped image crop of just her obituary here, and you can find a PDF of the full obits page here in my Box.com public folder to keep for your records:
http://www.box.com/s/664eec9c9eacc4847ab4

Also, I just ran a quick search for "Peggy Farrell" and Southampton NY and this article about called "Thalian friends salute Peggy Farrell" popped up on Google News. Have no idea if the same person, but a caption on the left side of the page mentioning her son-in-law also mentioned Southampton.
http://ow.ly/9XtWh

Best of luck!

.JT.

William George Farrell

I've been periodically attempting to locate information about my husband's father. William George Farrell. I know that he was born around 1894-1897. He, himself uses three different dates that I've seen in paperwork. His mother's name was "Annie Johnson" her maiden name was Brady. She has a child listed along with George Farrell in the 1910 census with her husband then Charles Johnson. George was listed as a stepson. I'm trying to place "Annie and George or William, her son together in a house with the missing "Farrell father" in 1900's. I haven't been able to do it yet. In fact, I can't seem to locate "Annie Johnson" as a Brady really. Her birth would be somewhere in the 1870's. William George Farrell had at least two separate families, and could have more. If you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi,
Don't know if you are aware the Holy Name of Mary church in Marysville, Ontario, Canada is updating its 1987 family histories in its 175th anniversary book this year, - if there's family updates since the 1987 version - passing this along.
Kathy
