Hello All,
I am searching for leads on several folks and I am at some dead ends. My family extends through Columbia County specifically Bloonsburg/Bloom Township back to Tilman B.1802. I've figured out that Tilman and brother Benjamin B.1810 married to Catherine also had a sister Rosanna B 1811 who never married. Their mother was Abigail Faux b. 1788. Abigail appeared on the 1850 census...lived a long life. But I am stumped trying to find Abigail's hubby. If you have any info...I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also, trying to find Revolutionary War info on Patrick Faux (Fox). He was a drummer and married Rebecca. Trying to see if there is a connection. Would love info.

Thank You!
Bobette Faux

Hello, I was wondering if your Nathan M. Faux was the brother of Benjamin Levi Faux. Benjamin was born in 1847 in Luzerne County and died in 1931 in Nanticoke, Luzerne County Pa. I have that Benjamin did have a Brother named Nathan Miles Faux born in 1851. Thier parents are Jacob Faux born around 1820 and Mary J Henry born around 1827. I do not have death dates on either.

Would love to hear from you and see if we are related.
Jeannette

I have since learned that our great grandmother's name was Mary E Rishel from Montour County, PA.....I have also learned that James, our great grandfather was not the son of Benjamin Faux from Columbia County. I still don't know who his parents are but it wasn't Ben. Do you have a Faux who was married to a Rishel by any chance? How about a Samuel York Faux? We haven't found the picture of the Indian woman yet but we are still hoping.
Dottie
Hi Liz

Thank you for your prompt reply.
Any idea of the illegit. son's name?
I'm thinking maybe she was another illegit. child, as it appears Violet was born about 1870 . The son would have only been 15-16 at most... although??
She was probably a ward of the state (re the guardian) . Do you know if there are Ward etc. records for this around that time in NSW? Do you also know when Will. Faux died?

There is mention later of her mother being named "Allen". Does that ring a bell?

Thanks again for your help

Garry

dear garry
it is a possibility that you are a faux
william faux had a illegitimate son at orange in 1856 to eleanor doran or dawson. your voilet could be the daughter of this son depending on her age ,he may be william james .Or william may have had 2 illegitimate children.
Liz

Dear Liz

I am seeking a Violet Annie Faux (or Vaux) who was apparently born in Dubbo NSW around 1860. She married a Sidney Berry in Orange in 1890. Any chance there may be a connection with William & Clara? Violet's father may have been deceased in 1890 as permission to marry was given by Henry Sully - her "guardian". Her second marriage as Violet Berry (a widow) in 1921, lists her father as William James VAUX (saddler - deceased).

Garry

Faux, Fawkes or Foulger in Leatherhead!!

I recently attended my Great Aunt's funeral where the mystery of the names was discussed.

My Great Aunt Sybil, and her siblings my Grandmother Violet Annie and Great Uncle Robert (Bob) were the children of Joseph and Annie (nee Winter) Faux, who in turn was the son of Burrell and Susanah Faux.

It was always known by my mother and her cousins that at the turn of the 20th century my Great Great Grandfather's family seemed to have two surnames - some were Faux and some were Foulger - for example my Great Grandfather ( Joseph) was known as Faux but his two unmarried sisters ( known as the maiden aunts) were known as Foulger.

With the death of my Great Aunt - the last of her siblings -there was no link left to ask so I decided to do some detective work using the Census records.

I decided to start with Joseph – Great Grandfather Joseph – since I knew he lived and was bought up in St Johns Road Leatherhead.

My first problem was that I couldn’t find any record of him in 1901 – so went back to 1891 – and there he was.

1891 – the starting point
There were two household of Faux living in St John’s Road:

First, Thomas, age 26 (born in Leatherhead) – carpenter/builder – and his wife Amy , 23 (born in Fetcham)

Secondly, Burrell Faux, 48 (born Pakenham, Suffolk) – carpenter/builder - and his wife Susan, 43 (born Southampton) plus their children :
William, 21, bricklayer
Rose, 13
Stephen, 14 – carriadge?
Joseph, 9
Nellie, 7
Jane, 5

I then hit my first hurdle. Moving forward to 1901 I could find Thomas and Amy, now living in Ashtead, but no trace of Burrell and family.

Through using some of their neighbours and hoping they still lived there I found out that by 1901 Burrell and Susan had changed their name to Foulger, and Burrell Faux had become William Foulger!

1901 Census...

Thomas and Amy are now living in Gladstone Road, Ashtead as Faux with their children Thomas H, age 6, Dorothy H, age 5, and Margaret A, age 1.

The Burrell Faux family have now become the William Foulger family consisting of William and his wife Susan and their children:
William now 32 – bricklayer
Stephen, 24 – bricklayer
Rose, 23 – housemaid/domestic
Joseph, 20 – carpenter
Nellie, 18 – dressmaker
Jane 16

I then tried to go back further. 1881 was a complete blank as far as anything in Surrey was concerned. The only Burrell Faux I could find was born in Pakenham Suffolk (near Bury St Edmunds) but was 55 (born ca 1826) living in Bradwell, Bucks with his wife Emma (4 Harwood St) and was a carpenter in a railway Carriage Company. At first I thought this may be the father of Burrell Faux in Leatherhead but later ruled this out – just another branch, I think.

I tried 1871 and found nothing.

Then I struck lucky on the 1861 Census.

1861 Census...

Burrell Faux age 19 , a carpenter, born in Pakenham, Suffolk was living with his parents John, age 36, - a carpenter- and Anna, age 42 – a shopkeeper in Chigwell Essex.

Also living with them were:
Louisa, 17
Joseph, 15 – a carpenter
John, 12
Jane,7
Frederick, 1

The age, birthplace, name and occupation seem too close a fit to be wrong

I then went back to 1851 and 1841 and followed the links

1851 Census..

Burrell Faux, age 8, was living in Puttocks Hill, Pakenham, Suffolk with his parents John and Anna.
Also:

Elizabeth P, 10
John G, 2
Louisa, 6

1841 Census...

John and Anna are living at Puttocks Hall, Essex with Elizabeth, age 11 months:

This still left me with the problem of 1871 and 1881, because they could not have just disappeared!
Eventually I found the following:

1871 Census..

The name on the census was using the spelling Fawkes. Burrell and Susanah Fawkes were living in Fairfield, Leatherhead with:

Burrell, age 7
Thomas, age 4
John, age 2
Wiilliam, age 11 months

I could not find any of the family as Faux or Fawkes in the 1881 census. As a long shot I tried looking for a Rose Foulger and struck gold!

1881 Census...

In St John’s Road the family is known as William and Susan Foulger! Living with their children:

Robert, age 16 – railway clerk ( for some reason he isn’t on 1871 or 1861 lists, but could have been away from home, or could be Burrell using another name!)
Thomas, age 14
James, age 13 – could this be John using a different name?
William, age 11
Mary, age 9
Stephen, age 4
Rose, age 2

Summary:

From Burrell Faux/William Foulger point of view I think I have peiced together the following:

1842/3: Born in Pakenham, Suffolk to John and Anna

1851: age 9, living in Puttocks hall with parents

1861: age 19, still living at home but in Chigwell Essex, now a carpenter

1871: age 29, living in Fairfield, Leatherhead with wife Susanah – spelt name as Fawkes – and 4 children

1881: age 39, now known as William Foulger for the first time. Living in St John’s Road with Susan and 7 children

1891: age 49, now back to Burrell Faux (!) in St John’s Road with Susan and 6 children at home

1901: age 59, William Foulger again (!) in St John’s Road with Susan 6 children still at home.

Post 1901.. appears that some of the family – Joseph reverted back to Faux ( Nan, Sybil and Bob for example) but some stayed as Foulger ( Iunderstand that Nellie and Jane were known as Foulger)

Explains some of the what happened but no nearer knowing the why? Perhaps Burrell had the name William as well – its not recorded anywhere in the census and I can’t find a birth record for a Burrell faux in Pakenham ca 1842/3 – but where did the Faux/Folger switch come from and why?

I have ordered the marriage certificate for Burrell and Susan to see what that brings!!

I have also established that Burrell Faux died in 1910 - I found the BMD record - but cannot find any death record of Susan/Susanah Faux/Foulger, even though I am told she died in 1932. My Great Aunt, who was born in 1912, always claimed that she never knew her Grandparents ( Burrel and susanah) - Burrell would have died before she was born but Susan/Susanah didn't die until she was 20!

Is anyone else researching this line because there must be quite a few descendents from Burrell Faux/William Foulger around!!

I would be willing to exchange any information by eMail if you leave a message here...

I'm a descendent of Michael Faux Sr's son William C. (sometimes written as William M.M.) who married Eliza Klinesmith.

I don't have much info on the family in terms of names but the story that was always told about the Faux family name is that they were French in name but spoke German. This fact would probably indicate that they were from Alsace-Lorraine. As well there had been stories that they were in fact Huguenots, Lutheran maybe as in my great-grandmother's generation they were.

I've also found another Faux, Philip, who was born in PA in 1816 and lived in Huntington Twp. Luzerne Co. for the 1880 census. Is there any connection between Michael and Philip?

I'm looking for info on a Michael Faux family who lived in Hollenback Twp. Michael was born around 1820s and married a Mary. They had a few children William, Elizabeth or Catherine, Reuben and possibly a Matthew or Mathias.

Son Matthew/Mathias married an Alice and William married a Klinesmith.

It's believed that Michael was a farmer in the area.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi,
I am hoping you are still active on this list also. Our Great Grandfather was James Faux/Fox who raised his family in Valley Township, Montour Co., PA and also Point Township, Northumberland County and was married to Mary E. ???. His son, Samuel, was my husband's Grandfather. Year ago, a friend came to our shop and brougt along a picture of a beautiful Indian woman and told my husband she was either his Great Grandmother or g g Grandmother. We can't remember but we thought he said her name was Mary. At the time, we were impressed but not that interested and now we can kick ourselves for being so lackadaisical because this gentleman has since died and no one knows where her picture is and I, of course, am doing our Family Tree.
If you ever find anymore out about our Indian Faux, I would be interested in knowing. I am almost certain that our James was the son of Benjamin in Columbia County. If I ever come upon the picture again, I will be happy to share it with you.
Dottie

Thanks for the answer..... I realize all the different
spellings of the name as I have run across them too...
I know for a fact that grandfather came from France,
Bordeaux region because he came back from India
through France and searched out his relatives in
Bordeaux and Paris... and I remember him
telling us about them and how nice and hospitable
they were to him..... Also, he and grandmother
were called Grandpere and Grandmere and we spoke
French at the dinner table or we got no food.
He said that we had to live up to our heritage
and speak our mother tongue.... Grandpere was
precise about pronunciation and vocabulary and
when his girls were in college they specialized
in Greek and French... He also was a stickler
music.... he taught me piano and till my grand
mere died she always said I played like him..
He played piano, and violin and I remember how
beautifully he played..... I loved to listen..
He was the most well educated man I think that
I will ever run across, even today... There
few people out there that believe in the
furtherance of education like he did.... Oh!
I just remembered he graduated from Brown,
in New England..... That brings up another
place to check..... so on to the chase...
I regret I haven't answered you til now, but
things have a way of catching up with you....
My daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia, the
other one had gall bladder surgery, I lost a
husband in December and all of that got to me
and I guess I don't have to tell you, it stops
you in your tracks for a while.... But I am
back on the net and okay now..... SUNNY

I don't think there is any connection between our families as I do not know of any emigration. I only wanted to say that one should not assume that the name FAUX is of French origin. Nowehere in the IGI have I come across a variant other than FAWKES, FAUXE, FAUKES, etc. which shows that it was always pronounced FAWKES. There are of course FAUX families in France and I suppose they pronounce it FOE. My name has its origin in the FALCON which appears on the coat of arms. Godd hunting in your ancestry! - Derrick

William Miles (Milne) Faux m. Bertha Louiza Clave

I am looking for relatives who could possibly
related to Bertha Louiza Faux nee Clave or
William Miles or Milne Faux... These are my
grandparents who lived in Villa Park, IL during
the thirties and forties. He was a preacher
in Chicago and Villa Park and was killed under
the Aurora Elgin Railroad (since disbanded,
I believe). Their children at that time were
Anna Jeanette, Helen ----, and Margaret Hower
Louise/Luise/Luisa/Luiza (they called her
Sweenie). These girls went to a College in
Drury, Missouri or it was called Drury
College. Grandmere stayed there and Grandpere
went to India as a missionary while they were
in school. I was remembering that he was of
the Christian Faith. As I am sure you can
tell they were of French descent ... only
thing I remember was of the Bordeaux wine
country and Paris, France. These are only
memories of statements and could possibly be
erroneous. Please contact me at
sunny@illuminet.net if you can shed any
light on my grandparents....
My husband was born Szalankiewicz but his father changed their name to Sallans and many of his brothers and sisters (aunts and uncles) also changed their names to other names.
My Husband: Richard
His Father: (origionally: John Richard changed to Richard John)
My Husbands Grandfather: John Richard (not sure about middle name).
My Husbands Grandmother: Helen Cheslinski (unsure of spelling).
I have started on the family geneology also so any information would be helpful.

dont know if you already have this but i found it at http://www.rootsweb.com/~parecs/military/civilwar/rosters/21...

Pennsylvania Volunteers of the Civil War - Regimental Rosters -- Two Hundred and Tenth Regiment, Company E
Recruited at Schuylkill and Columbia Counties
Tillman Faux is listed as a Private.

My dad remembers his grandmother (daughter of Elizabeth Fox/Faux, who may be daughter to Benjamin Faux) taking him and his sisters to a movie when they were kids. he said it was a war movie and he remembers when the shooting started, his grandmother started crying really hard and pulled them all out of there and they went home. so i figure there is bad memories for her regarding war and family and thats how i came across Pvt Faux in my searches.

ive got trumps, pursels, and gardners in that columbia county, pa faux/fox line, ring any bells?

My ancestor, Christopher Columbus Faux/Fox was b. in VA 1800. His father b. in Prussia and mother b. in MD. My family story, always suspect, but often with some truth, is that the family came from "Alsace-Lorraine, but was more German than French. I have many clues...all yet to make a connection. One remote poss, is that his father came with Hessians to fight in Rev. War. That would make him rather old to have child b. 1800 but stranger things have been found in family history search. I have a documented comprehensive chronology of Christopher Faux if anyone wants me to send it to them He married Rachel Davisson in Xenia, Green Co. OH in 1829.
I also have several clues pointing to Chris' having a brother named William.

Sue Canavan in Santa Rosa
