I am not sure if you are still looking for connections to Samuel Fawkes married to Bertha Canning but he was my grandfather. My father was Samuel Fawkes Jr. married to Marion Marten Fawkes and later to a woman whose name I do not know but would like to find.

Hi Karen(kiki) well I haven't been on this site in a long time. Just finish reading your post and I am sitting here amazed. I post something in 2000 about my family. My father name is Lionel A. Fawkes (deceased in 2002) and his father name was Richard Fawkes all I know is that he died when my father was 4 years old and my dad was born in 1931. I to am somewhat confused over the spelling of the name
Fawkes, I have a marriage certificate dated October 19 1878 between John Forkes (how it is spelt on the certificate) and Sarah Quinn. Johns birth place is listed as Denham
England, Sarah as Bamsly Yorkshire. His parents were Samuel Forkes and Hannah Sands. John and Sarah moved to Australia and on the birth certificate of their son it is spelt as Fawkes. Since then we have all used this spelling, I have not been able to find any information using either spelling, any help would be highly appriecated.

My name is Sandra and my fathers name was Frederick Fawkes he had a brother Bill whos sons name is Kenneth who married a Sandra I married a Kenneth. My uncle Bill was married to a May, uncle Bill was my fathers older brother and they had a brother Peter and sisters Frances and Ethel. I am sure you are my second cousin what do you think? Hi Dave,Thanks for prompt reply.message was really intended for Gomerd as he has lots of info. on my MATHIAS line but he hasn't responded to my queries as to where he fits in! I am a descendant of Ann Fawke's(nee Mathias)brother Joseph. His daughter Martha married her cousin James LLewellin and ended up in Neath, West Glam, where I was born and brought up. Their grandson Edward (My grandfather)spent much of his childhood with them as his mother died when he was young, he passed on lots of family info to me and got me hooked on family history.Just picked up Fawke thread again recently as had a message from a descendant of Mary Maria. I have a family bible listing descendants of BENJAMIN and Ann.Have visited Southport to see where they lived and burial places. Annie Fawke their daughter married a relative, Rev John Skittery, I am in contact with Skittery family, living in farm close to 'Flights' - they appear to be the only family with this surname in Britain! I'm not sure if your message was intended for me however I am a Fawke descendent , and have come across my Fawkes living at Flights farm at various times.
A cousin of mine married ,Benjamin Fawke, married Ann Mathias in 1839 at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, they eventually lived at Southport Lancashire.
As the Flights farm and area features quite often in my Fawke line I would appreciate any info/details that you have.

Seeking any information on this gentleman who married Ann Mellins in Ledbury 1850 and is buried in Tarrington.
He was my great great Grandfather and the line descends through his son Christopher Henry Fawke who passed away in Birmingham 1916.
I have no idea of his parents or any siblings that he may have had so any information or assistance on how I could trace them is deeply appreciated.

Thank you for replying to my email. I am just starting research on my husband's side of the family. When I have more information I will contact you. I appreciate receiving any information you have.

Apparently we go back to Guy Fawkes.

Interestingly I was looking at family photos and noticed that my husbands grandmother looked exactly like Princess Di. My father-in-law went and got birth certificates etc and it turns out that her maiden name is Spencer.

Thank you and if I can go back as far as 1750 I will be in touch.

It has been a while since I have researched that side of tree. I would have to dig out the info. I know that I have about 3 generations of Fawkes living in King Stanley from about 1750 - my direct ancestors moved to Sheppey in Kent around the 1900s. Unfortunately my Grandfather Fred only had sisters and daughters do the Fawkes name on that line died out there.
If you can give me some names and dates I will look to see if there is a connection.

A Big Hello to all Regestered Honorable Members and Guests,

It has come to my attention that certain old Historical Hand Written text could be a matter of importance in helping any Volanteer Researchers pinpoint a Known Family Member.

The more i look at the "Physical Docuument" myself, the more, in doubt, i am, about the Family Name, that is also referenced else where in a Paid for Document Search Summary by BDM Staff of a range of my Known Blood Families and Known Interrelated Relatives.

THE DILEMMA.

The dilemma involves the well known Historical Family Names Fawks and Fawkes !

I interprit a Hand Written mark [or Hand Written Character] on the paid for, and supplied Queenasland Australia Marriage Certificate as having "A POSSIBLE MALFORMED" Hand Written "E" in Lower Case between the Hand Written Lower Case "k" in Fawks and the Hand Written Lower Case "s" in Fawks.

Naturally, there is a big difference in any research outcomes, when a "WRONG" Family Connection is Partly or Fully Researched !

Could someone who has struck a like problem before care to advise me of a possible Absolute Resolution to the Perceived Dilemma !

I was going to Crop, the Image, of the Original BDM Marriage Certificate, I have and attach it to a post as a Scanned Image File. It would show only the Relivant part of the Original Document and is quite small in File Size. The whole Document is only 72KB On Disk.

The Original Wedding Certificate states the Date of Marriage as the 25th of September 1865.

Fawkes or Fawks is "NOT" either of the marriages Parties involved but "ONE" of the true known Parents Christian Names and Maiden Name of the Bride's own Blood Mum. The Hand Written Text with a Thumbnail Dipped in Tar, states that the Beautiful Bride came at the time from Epsom England !

Constructive Suggestions are Most Welcome !

I'm trying to find pre-marriage information on two members of the FAWKE family who both married into the MATHIAS family of Pembrokeshire.

1. Ann FAWKE born at "The Flights", Ledbury. Second wife of Joseph MATHIAS. 1841 Census in Haverfordwest gave age as 50. Husband born 1771.

2. Benjamin FAWKE of Ledbury bn c.1813 married Ann MATHIAS 1839 Pembrokeshire.

Well Hello 3-4-5th? cousin. I just got the Trails to Little Corner History Book of Namaka and districts from my sister. My Father is Albert; Daughter of Nancy Fawkes who married James Shaw. I would take it you are Duane's child? I have quite a lot of information on the Smitton side as my father has the very old family bible. Do you have any info on your grandfather's father and mother? You are welcome to look at what information I do have. I have spent many hours and months compiling what I have so far. I never even knew that my Grampa Fawkes had any relatives here in Canada until recently. I was about 12 years old when he passed away and lived at my Grandmother's (Nancy Shaw) for a short time then.

My father who is the Grandson of William Fawkes had an uncle named Ike(short for Isaac?) Fawkes. Ike lived in Strathmore Alberta and had 11 children. 3 died of Polio in the 50's. My Grandfather was born in Carlisle, England. Emigrated to Canada in 1906. He had a large Homestead just southeast of Strathmore in Namaka. Is this a connection? I still have 4 Great uncles/aunts who are living and William's children?

My Great Grandfather was William Fawkes. He always said that Guy Fawkes was his great-great uncle? However I have no information right now on his lineage. He was born in Carlisle, England in 1891. Emigrated to Alberta in 1906. His families Homestead in Carlisle was 200 yrs old?

Faux, Foulger or Fawkes living in Leatherhead, Surrey...

I recently attended my Great Aunt's funeral where the mystery of the names was discussed.

My Great Aunt Sybil, and her siblings my Grandmother Violet Annie and Great Uncle Robert (Bob) were the children of Joseph and Annie (nee Winter) Faux, who in turn was the son of Burrell and Susanah Faux.

It was always known by my mother and her cousins that at the turn of the 20th century my Great Great Grandfather's family seemed to have two surnames - some were Faux and some were Foulger - for example my Great Grandfather ( Joseph) was known as Faux but his two unmarried sisters ( known as the maiden aunts) were known as Foulger.

With the death of my Great Aunt - the last of her siblings -there was no link left to ask so I decided to do some detective work using the Census records.

I decided to start with Joseph – Great Grandfather Joseph – since I knew he lived and was bought up in St Johns Road Leatherhead.

My first problem was that I couldn’t find any record of him in 1901 – so went back to 1891 – and there he was.

1891 – the starting point
There were two household of Faux living in St John’s Road:

First, Thomas, age 26 (born in Leatherhead) – carpenter/builder – and his wife Amy , 23 (born in Fetcham)

Secondly, Burrell Faux, 48 (born Pakenham, Suffolk) – carpenter/builder - and his wife Susan, 43 (born Southampton) plus their children :
William, 21, bricklayer
Rose, 13
Stephen, 14 – carriadge?
Joseph, 9
Nellie, 7
Jane, 5

I then hit my first hurdle. Moving forward to 1901 I could find Thomas and Amy, now living in Ashtead, but no trace of Burrell and family.

Through using some of their neighbours and hoping they still lived there I found out that by 1901 Burrell and Susan had changed their name to Foulger, and Burrell Faux had become William Foulger!

1901 Census...

Thomas and Amy are now living in Gladstone Road, Ashtead as Faux with their children Thomas H, age 6, Dorothy H, age 5, and Margaret A, age 1.

The Burrell Faux family have now become the William Foulger family consisting of William and his wife Susan and their children:
William now 32 – bricklayer
Stephen, 24 – bricklayer
Rose, 23 – housemaid/domestic
Joseph, 20 – carpenter
Nellie, 18 – dressmaker
Jane 16

I then tried to go back further. 1881 was a complete blank as far as anything in Surrey was concerned. The only Burrell Faux I could find was born in Pakenham Suffolk (near Bury St Edmunds) but was 55 (born ca 1826) living in Bradwell, Bucks with his wife Emma (4 Harwood St) and was a carpenter in a railway Carriage Company. At first I thought this may be the father of Burrell Faux in Leatherhead but later ruled this out – just another branch, I think.

I tried 1871 and found nothing.

Then I struck lucky on the 1861 Census.

1861 Census...

Burrell Faux age 19 , a carpenter, born in Pakenham, Suffolk was living with his parents John, age 36, - a carpenter- and Anna, age 42 – a shopkeeper in Chigwell Essex.

Also living with them were:
Louisa, 17
Joseph, 15 – a carpenter
John, 12
Jane,7
Frederick, 1

The age, birthplace, name and occupation seem too close a fit to be wrong

I then went back to 1851 and 1841 and followed the links

1851 Census..

Burrell Faux, age 8, was living in Puttocks Hill, Pakenham, Suffolk with his parents John and Anna.
Also:

Elizabeth P, 10
John G, 2
Louisa, 6

1841 Census...

John and Anna are living at Puttocks Hall, Essex with Elizabeth, age 11 months:

This still left me with the problem of 1871 and 1881, because they could not have just disappeared!
Eventually I found the following:

1871 Census..

The name on the census was using the spelling Fawkes. Burrell and Susanah Fawkes were living in Fairfield, Leatherhead with:

Burrell, age 7
Thomas, age 4
John, age 2
Wiilliam, age 11 months

I could not find any of the family as Faux or Fawkes in the 1881 census. As a long shot I tried looking for a Rose Foulger and struck gold!

1881 Census...

In St John’s Road the family is known as William and Susan Foulger! Living with their children:

Robert, age 16 – railway clerk ( for some reason he isn’t on 1871 or 1861 lists, but could have been away from home, or could be Burrell using another name!)
Thomas, age 14
James, age 13 – could this be John using a different name?
William, age 11
Mary, age 9
Stephen, age 4
Rose, age 2

Summary:

From Burrell Faux/William Foulger point of view I think I have peiced together the following:

1842/3: Born in Pakenham, Suffolk to John and Anna

1851: age 9, living in Puttocks hall with parents

1861: age 19, still living at home but in Chigwell Essex, now a carpenter

1871: age 29, living in Fairfield, Leatherhead with wife Susanah – spelt name as Fawkes – and 4 children

1881: age 39, now known as William Foulger for the first time. Living in St John’s Road with Susan and 7 children

1891: age 49, now back to Burrell Faux (!) in St John’s Road with Susan and 6 children at home

1901: age 59, William Foulger again (!) in St John’s Road with Susan 6 children still at home.

Post 1901.. appears that some of the family – Joseph reverted back to Faux ( Nan, Sybil and Bob for example) but some stayed as Foulger ( Iunderstand that Nellie and Jane were known as Foulger)

Explains some of the what happened but no nearer knowing the why? Perhaps Burrell had the name William as well – its not recorded anywhere in the census and I can’t find a birth record for a Burrell faux in Pakenham ca 1842/3 – but where did the Faux/Folger switch come from and why?

I have ordered the marriage certificate for Burrell and Susan to see what that brings!!

I have also established that Burrell Faux died in 1910 - I found the BMD record - but cannot find any death record of Susan/Susanah Faux/Foulger, even though I am told she died in 1932. My Great Aunt, who was born in 1912, always claimed that she never knew her Grandparents ( Burrel and susanah) - Burrell would have died before she was born but Susan/Susanah didn't die until she was 20!

Is anyone else researching this line because there must be quite a few descendents from Burrell Faux/William Foulger around!!

My Fawkes lot did not move down to London until the 1900s They left King Stanley in Gloucester in the late 1800s and lived in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent before moving into the East end of London.
I do have an Isaac somewhere in my tree still in Gloucester back in the early 1800s but would have to check my files for exact dates. If you think there may be a match please let me know & I will dig out more info.

I have been unsuccessful in tracking down the marriage of Mary Ann Fawk to Charles Jaine in about 1857. They appear in the UK 1861 census and Mary is shown as being born in Dymock. A recent search of the Dymock and Much Marcle Parish Registers didn't throw up either this marriage or the birth of their first two children shown in the census as being born in Dymock. One was age 3 and the other age 1. Again, I couldn't find the births in the BMD indexes.

I'd be glad to hear from anyone who might have further information...

We've not been able to cite any sources or ancestry beyond what we have listed above on this branch.

Dave - are you Dave from Canada? If you are I have been trying to get hold of you through GR but had no response nor the 2 e-mail addresses I had for you. I have had contact with you since the year 2000 and I am now in contact with someone who is researching his Gt.Gt. Grandfather John Fawke born 1828 and I believe is your Gt. Grandfather Edward Fawke born 1846 brother. If you are this Dave can you please contact me.

John and Ann Fawkes came to Chester County or Delaware COunty, their son Richard marrried Rebecca Newlin and moved to Newtown. Two of their children Mary Fawkes and John Fawkes ended up in Lancaster county near Gerogetown, belonging to Bart Friends (Quaker) Meeting.

I am researching my Fawkes ancestors and my 3x great grandfather Peter was born in Bisley in 1812.

He had eight children, Isaac, Elizabeth, George, Harriett, Oliver, Orpah, Richard and Stephen.

His wife's name was Eliza

I have also found an Isaac Fawkes, born 1815 in Bisley. In 1861 Harriett was living with his family so Isaac is quite likely Peter's younger brother. Isaac later moved back to Bisley and fathered another family.

Peter's family moved to London some time before 1861, and Peter's name is missing from subsequent censuses. I have not found his death record.

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they may have links to these Fawkes families.

If you are looking for Fawkes Births in April-May-June 1860 you should check under Fawles, the chap who transcribed the April-June Index to typewritten had "a bad day at the Office"

His Surname order is
Fawell
Fawles
Fawkner
Fawley

But the FreeBMD transcribers will not accept corrections as it is the "source document" that is incorrect. My plead that the document they are using as a source is itself a transcription is ignored.
