I havent been on this forum in more than a year but I am interested in knowing the validity of FEBUS being of Jewish origin.I did not mean to mislead anyone researching the surname.I posted for all to see that its most likely of jewish origins. But I also found out of a christian (protestant)fleeing persecution in france from the catholic monorchy.I myself am a Febus from my father who is from naranjito puerto rico.If you can give me more concrete nfo. like some oral tradition from your family that they are infact jewish/sephardic I would realy appreate it.

thanks,

corally

She was the daughter of Frank Frebis and Ida Schweitzer of Ripley, Brown County, Ohio. She married Robert Linn who is descended from Henry Linn (Johann Heinrich) and Elisabeth Stein who are my 4th great grandparents. I have a tree on Ancestry with a lot of Linn information. Let me know if I can help you.
Lynn Wayson Koehler

My last name is Febo, which is attributed to Italian and/or Spanish origins. I know my ancestors came to Puerto Rico from Spain in various successions. I know Febos from Italy, as well as having discovered Febos living in various parts of Europe and North and South America. There is a connection between Febo and Febus. Phoebus, being the Latin variation of the Greek god Apollo, is the origin of our names.

My fathers name is Jorge Febus, Febo and there are other spellings for this name. There was a big family reunion a few years ago in I beleive it was Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. I could not make it but my family did.

Someone in the family has a family tree with the story of the Febus family. It is said and I don't have the info at this time but will get a hold of it that the Febus or Febo or Phoebus or Phoibus originates from Jewish decent with families that fled to Italy and which migrating to France, Germany and finally Spain. If this is completely true, I don't know but will get a hold of the family history soon as my father has it. The Febuses ended up in Spain where they embarked on a journey with Christopher Columbus to the Caribbean as slaves because many were imprisoned.

They may have been imprisoned because at the time when the Queen gave Columbus permission to travel, all of the Jews were ordered to immediately leave Spain or be put to death or imprisonment. The then landed on the Canary Islands and then spread out into the rest of the Caribbean.

Please observe that I may have gotten some information mixed up but not much I am told. The Febuses are scattered all over the world but are all one family. Remember that the variations in spelling of their names are many but they are all the same family. I will try to obtain the family tree which was put together a few years ago and will try to post in on a website for all to view.
George-----bansheeinv@yahoo.com

just like every one else searching for the origins of surname "FEBUS", I am also a FEBUS from my DAD's side.I stumbled upon a website"sephardic haplogroup profile in the
New World".I have finally found what I was looking for.FEBUS
is a surname of jewish origin. Most jews lived in the Iberian
peninsula in Spain since a couple hundred years before CHRIST.Could be from the tribe Juda .The jews from Spain are called sephardic jews. Most people of Spanish descent have jewish or arab(middle east) ancestry. These are called
"conversos" because they forced to convert to the catholic
religion.the Febuses came to the new world after spanish expultion of the jews in the 1400's.DNA testing was done
that proved the jewish and north Afican(muslim /arab)genes.
The surname FEIBUS,FEIBUSH and other spellings found in europe countries like poland, germany(were thre is a
jewish large cmmunity. They probably originated from iberia Spain.SO THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Hi Daniel,

Cayetano Febo and mother Cayetana Febus are a small branch in my line. I would like to compare notes with you also. I'm at work right now so I do not have the information in front of me and do not remember because I've not done extensive research on them. I do know that he was married to Petronila Lopez de Victoria and I have them coming from Loiza. In any event please email me. I will also check my work when I get home to let you know what I have.

Juanita

Hi, do not worry, I will need time to gather some of the information I have becouse it is not all in my computer or well orginized. I would also like to see if I can link your Febo/Febus relative to the family tree I am building. We well need to mantain contact. My father and most close relatives are from Canovanas, PR. The first Febo/febus we have registered in Puerto Rico was Cayetano Febo probably born in Caguas 1809, father unkown, mother would have been Cayetana Febus. Data is not compleatly reliable.

for now see the folloing:

1. Spanish: habitational name from Febo in the autonomous region of Valencia.
2. Italian: from the personal name Febo, from Latin Phoebus, Greek Phoibos, name of the sun god.

Hi Nellie! My ancestors also are from Toa Alta, Naranjito and that area. My great grandmother's name was Teresa Febo y Febo, sometimes spelled Febus. I have seen it spelled various ways. If that name sounds familiar to you, please let me know, I have information for you that I have acquired through the internet from a "new found" cousin. Take care!

came across this message board "RE: FEBUS/FEBO" you see I am researching my grandfather's name PEDRO JUAN SANTIAGO FEBO b.1800 in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. He married my grandmother MARIA LUISA BERMUDEZ RODRIGUEZ b. 1800s(Juana Diaz, P.R.) they both had two children that I know of my father MIGUEL ANGEL SANTIAGO b. Nov.18/1918(Ponce, P.R.) and my aunt PROVIDENCIA (Provy) Santiago b. abt.1900s.-later they moved to New York. I know that my aunt Provy had seven(7) children (3-sons Roberto,Tony and Rueben and 4-daughters Gladys,Norma,Silvia and Yolanda) I don't know if my grandparents had more children??? But if you find any links or information thru your families/relatives please email me at:
JCLujan2000@AOL.Com
The name is French. The island was occupied by the french in the 1600, then the dutch and finally the spaniards. From what my brother traces back our tree started with a french captain. My familly is from Toa Alta. I don't know many febus aside from my family but would nice to know if we and other are somehow related.
I saw this while searching for other febus's. My Family is currently from Toa Alta. To my understanding the Febus is actually a French last name. This is how our history began. A french captain started the febus at the island. We later moved to New York and now most of us are kind of spread out. Febus's in Virginia, Minnesota, Pensylvania and still a few in Toa Alta
