Hi Bill,

Thank you very much for the information. I am supposing you meant to call me Patrick. :) My grandfather was named Peter, not me. :) Anyhow, I just want to be sure I was the one you meant to write to. Regarding my grandfather Peter Finegan, as I mentioned his father was Owen and I since found that his wife, my great-grandmother, was named Ann. (Maiden name unknown at this time.) Peter had a brother Eugene who was born in Glasgow around 1908 or 1906 or so. I agree that the similarities of the dates and place (Glasgow) are very interesting. Thank you ever so much for the information and for taking the time to write to me. If I find anything more out concerning Owen (Red) Finegan I will also pass it on to you. It is interesting also that my uncle, my father Leo's brother, was named Henry (i.e. Owen) and was nicknamed Red, although he never had red hair.

Thanks again and good luck in your quest.

Cheers,

Patrick

Hello Peter,

As far as I am aware Owen Finegan (Red Owen) came over to Glasgow when his carter business went bust. I'm not sure of dates etc. My Father Eugene was born in Glasgow in 1920 and was the elder brother of James, Theresa and Terry. My Grandmother was Margaret Obrien from somewhere in Cork. I agree the dates are probably more than coincindental. From somewhere in my distant memory, I believe that Owen recevied an inheritence from a relative in America and I think he started his business with this. Unfortunately, I cannot recall a Peter being mentioned within famly circles but I would imagine they must have been related. This is likely to be not too helpful for you however, if I do manange to glean any more info I will certainly pass this on to you.

Kindest regards

Bill

Hi wfinegan,

I am looking for my grandfather Peter Finegan, who moved from Carrickmacross (we think, hard to read the Ellis Island registry writing) to Glasgow Scotland. I noticed that you mention your grandfather was Owen Finegan from Carrickmacross. On my grandfather's marriage certificate (married in Glasgow) he lists his father's name as Owen. I do not have a list of my grandfather's siblings, but he was born around 1883. That would I think put him as a contemporary of your grandfather's. Were they brothers?

I am trying to figure how and when my grandfather moved from Ireland to Glasgow. Any ideas how I can find out? He eventually emigrated to the US in 1909 so his move to Scotland must be before that. Anything you can tell me would be helpful and most appreciated.

Thanks.
Alan,
We've been in touch, and you're correct - I mis-typed James - should have been John. James is John's father.

(ex: G1 stands for Generation 1....)
G1. John and Esther H. Fee
G2. John and Mary (Bradford) Fee were both born 1811-1812 in Ireland, and show having two children in Ireland:
G3i. James Fee (b:1837), m. Elizabeth Fee (b:1841)
G3ii. Agnes Fee (b:1840, Cala3 shows in Down, Ireland); m.William Pritchard (b:1834,Cavan,CAN)
Then they appear in the 1841 Scotland census with:
G3iii. John Bradford Fee (b:10 Jun 1844); m. Frances Jeanette Buck (b:1847)
G3iv. Samuel Fee (b:14 Jan 1847 Dalrymple, Scotland); I assume he died before they migrated to Canada, as did their next child, Margaret Fee.
G3v. Margaret Fee (b:16 Jan 1851, d: 25 Oct 1854)
Then they show up in 1861 and 1871 Canada Census with two more:
G3vi. David H Fee (b: 1855, Cavan, CAN, d: ~1890, Grand Forks, ND) - his tombstone with wife Sarah Jane Coulter reads "Pioneers of 1878".
G3vii. Mary Jane Fee (b: 22 Feb 1858,d:14 Dec 1858)
Mary Bradford dies around 1860'ish, as John marries as a widow (at age 50 to age 21): Eliza Guinn on 27 Oct 1865 in Peterborough.
G3viii. Martha Jane Fee (b: 1866) - could be same Mary Jane (b:1858)
G3ix. Robert Alexander (b: 28 Dec 1872) - born the same year as his nephew (Morris Daniel of John Bradford Fee).

I'm still searching for where they're from in Ireland, although in my research it could either be (Fermanaugh, Cavan) or originally McFee from Scotland (which would make sense if they moved back to Scotland).

I've ordered a DNA kit for my Dad to see if we can trace it back to anyone else having taken the test, and I hope to travel to Ireland/Scotland to verify records for John, Mary and their parents, if possible.

Take care,
Shannon

Re James and Mary FEE of Cavan 1861: I have a large database of FEEs, and I do have this family included, but have been unable to connect them to the Irish FEEs who settled in Emily Township, Victoria County, in 1820. In fact, I have James's name as John, and clues that the family lived in Scotland, then Cavan, then Stanhope Township (Minden), then Dakota. The names Pritchard, Buck and Mulligan are in the family. I believe they were in Pittsylvania County prior to their being in Henry County, Virginia.

Henry Fee married Ellen "Nellie" Long and I will check in with the LONG website (MyFamily.com) and also one devoted to FEE and see if anyone has gotten further back than our Thomas and Rachel FEE.
Linda, do you know the name of your immigrant Fee ancestor and what year he arrived in America? Although I may be mistaken, the person to whom you were responding about Henry Fee is not a descendant of Thomas Fee 1732-1800 of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Ohio. There were 9 Fee's on the 1790 Federal Census and 5 were of my line. I am not aware of my line of Fee going to Henry County, Virginia or Shelby County, Indiana. I would love to find out if there is a connection of which I am not aware. --Thomas Fee, Reno, Nevada.

Don't we love all of these Thomas Fees. Mine was born in Prince George Co., Md. in 1732. His father was a George Fee and his mother was Parnell Larkin. Thomas married Sarah Lyeth and they had 14 kids, one was a Thomas born in 1763? and he married a Nancy Cathers. Most likely in Pa. in the 1780s or could haave been Ky. as they came down to Mason Co., Ky then went over and the river into Clermont Co. where they became a very prominent family and worked with the underground R.R. for years. The old Fee Mansion is still standing on the river and is on the state afghan.

I have a lot of FEE names in my database. My wife is descended from Eleanor FEE and her husband Thomas TROTTER who arrived in Emily township, Ontario, Canada, in 1819 from County Fermanagh, Ireland, along with Eleanor's widowed mother and several brothers. Anybody want to share? At the moment, I'm trying to connect Vince Fee and his son Clayton Fee (whom I knew personally) to this family tree. I think the EBay item is the Col. Pearson history, of which I have parts as photocopies. Alan Richards, London, Canada alanr@rogers.com

I have seen A Brief History of the Fee Family with Biological Sketches of their Descendants, from the earliest available records, from 1750 to the present time. It is a facsimile in a nice hard cover. The original was printed in 1901. He married Agnes Nisbett on 8-13-1811. The entire book, 71 pages, is about Robert Fee, Jr. who came to America from County Antrim, Ireland with his parents when he was 6 years old approximately 1791. He was born 5 Dec 1785. His parents were Robert Fee and Rachel Scott Fee. The entire book is biographical sketches of Robert Fee Jr. and his descendants to about 1900. He came to America and lived in Chester County, South Carolina all his life. A number of his descendants also lived in Chester County. It is available from Shelley and Son Books, 429 North Plain Street, Hendersonville, N.C. 28792 for $175.00.

Fee Family - Canada to Dakota Territory

*NOTE: I am not related to the following persons.
WALSH HERITAGE, NORTH DAKOTA, BOOK-1, PAGE 512-513
THE FEE FAMILY - BIO

A train laden with farm machinery, lumber, cows, horses and household goods belonging to a group of settlers bound for the prairies of Dakota left Lindsay, Ontario in the spring of 1881. They arrived in Minto on May 21, 1881.

Francis Fee, was nicknamed "Columbus Fee" by his friends, had gone ahead to Dakota in 1880 and set up the basis for making homestead claims for himself and and several of his brothers and married sisters and their families, also his wife's two brothers: William and Martin Coffey.

These people homesteaded in Ops Township which they named after a township of the same name near Lindsay. The Fees and their families had claims and lived for the first years in sod shanties and "claim shacks" on the prairies, planting trees and breaking sod.

Winters were cruel to these people fra the lower reaches of Canada. Summer heat with flies and mosquitoes must have made life nearly unbearable at times.
One of the Fee sisters, Mrs Cayley, lost all three of her children within a few days fra the disease known as "Black Diphtheria." they are buried side-by-side in St Patrick's cemetery in Minto. Catherine Cayley was not daunted and had six other sons and a daughter.

Jane Fee, the mother of this pioneer family, who was born Jane McInerney in 1811, died in 1883 and was probably the first to be buried in the cemetery at St Luke's in Vesleyville. The stone is still there. How odd that this woman, born on the Irish Sea, who spent her first years in Scotland, and most of the remainder of her life in Ontario, who must have been a Presbyterian, to have been interred in alien soil, in a totally new country, where her grave would become surrounded by graves bearing Czechoslovakian names. This woman has descendants in almost every town fra Walhalla to Grand Forks and some on each coast and Canada. Several of the Fee children married Irish Catholics.

One of the sisters is reported to have said that on a clear, windless morning, she could see the smoke rising fra the chimneys of each of her sister's and brother's homes on their surrounding prairie farms in Ops Township.

Many of the children of these settlers left Dakota and went to western Canada, Montana and other places. "Columbus Fee", eventually got the "pioneer fever" and took the younger members of his family to Alberta. He was an artist, a writer, a musician and a seeker. He joined the Salvation Army later in life and achieved a reputation for himself. He was the last of the family to die, in 1935, Alberta, Canada. His son, Charles, lived many years in Grand Forks where he sold real estate and entertained his many friends with fascinating stories. He dies in 1956.

The Grahams, Millers and Callahans (could also be Callaghans) all moved fra Walsh County early in the century, the Grahams to western North Dakota. It is said that Josie, the wife of Senator Quentin Burdick, is a descendant of may Ellen Fee, who married Thomas Graham.

William Henry Fee is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Minto. Three of his daughters married men named Kennedy.

Charles Fee, Vesleyville is a descendant of this line and the head of the Fee family in Walsh County.

Mrs O'Keefe was one of the older sisters and by the time of the move to Dakota she had several adult sons, one of whom was a doctor in Minto for several years before moving to Grand Forks. Another son, John, was one of the early settlers in Cavalier. John later became collector of customs in pembina in 1933. Thomas, another son, was the grandfather of Mrs Wallace Goulet and also Mrs Rene French, both of Grafton.

The late C. J. O'Keefe, Crystal, was a grandson of this Fee girl, who married an O'Keefe. Judge James O'Keefe, of Grafton, is a descendant of this line.

James Cayley, the auctioneer, was well known around Grafton until his death in 1948, where his widow Alyce lives. Catherine Fee Cayley also had a grandson in Cavalier.
