William Felstead & Eunice Watson before Immigration to Detroit?

My gr-gr-grandparents migrated to Detroit (Michigan, USA) from London England in 1856. I have found quite a lot of information about them and their offspring here, which I'll be happy to share, but I'd like to learn more about their British backgrounds. William was born in 1814 in Chigwell, Essex. Eunice Watson was the daughter of Capt. Thomas Watson, b. in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1825. The family story is that Capt. Watson was lost at sea before Eunice was born. Lots of missing pieces to this puzzle - any contribution will be appreciated.

Felstead's of Norfolk

Looking for information on Felstead's in Norfolk they were spread around from Norwich, Coltishall, Ludham, Wymondham, Neatishead, Wroxham etc. Some then moved to Westhoe, London and various other places looking for work. Am also anxious to find correct lineage for William J Felstead, son of Richard Felstead & Jane Louisa Rogers, they moved to Westhoe from Norwich and I found a marriage of William J Felstead in 1896 @ Hemsworth married to an Emma Snape but father was listed as James (deceased in 1896) also found another entry for a Harry or Henry married a Emma Smith 16.04.1900 father also James - same church St Helens in Hemsworth

Many thanks
Irene Felstead

Unfortunately, the data I have on the Felsteads - and even Ethel Ena Felstead - is very sparse, as my real area of interest is the family of her spouse, William George Andrew.Ethel Ena's parents were Benjamin Felstead and Lydia Hutchin. Benjamin was born in Hertfordshire in 1830, but I have no details of his siblings and only brief details of his children. Hopefully, one of the others who have posted here will be able to help, as it is apparent that there are people with a reasonable knowledge of Felstead history.

John

Hello - I was notified of your post. My Grandfather was a Thomas R.Felstead, married to Florence Grace Hartles in Edmonton, England in 1909. My Grandfather's father was Thomas ? Felstead born in 1853 in Edmonton, England and married Mary Hancock in 1876. My G G Grandfathers name was William Felstead, born bet. 1802-1831 and married Charlotte Belly or Bailey in the early 1840's in England.
My grandfathers siblings were Henry J. Felstead,b. 1887-1888, Matilda Felstead, b. 1883-1884, Polly Felstead, b.?, Mary Ann Felstead, b. 1878, Ellen M., b. 1880, Charles Felstead, b. 1885 and then my grandfather. I know his sibling Mary Ann had a daughter in 1898 named Ethel and my mother Florence's middle name was Ethel. So, I wonder if this was a name from the families past. My grandparents immigrated to the USA in 1913 and remained here their whole life but I know some siblings did go to Australia, but not who. Does this in any way sound like a possible match?
Florence (the 2nd)

I am not a descendant but I am distantly related to Ethel Ena Felstead (sometimes spelled Ethelina) (born 1870), who married William George Andrew in 1889. (William George Andrew was a son of William and Victoria Andrew (nee Reed), who were my great-great-grandmother's brother-in-law and sister.) I am researching the Reeds and their descendants and would very much like to hear from anyone connected with the Andrew family.

John

I guess the question is whether George Felstead who married Helen Jackson is the same person that was baptized George Felstead Hopper in Toronto. There are quite a few discrepancies between the two persons on census etc. Any idea if he was related to old William Felstead who died in 1930 in Toronto? I always meant to check his will to see who inherited the land in the Woodbine-Danforth area where Felstead St is.

If they are the same person, then there is a lot of research already there, especially on the Kingston side, otherwise, good luck.

Thanks all so much for the information on George Hopper. He is my gt gt grandmother's younger brother. We knew he had gone to Canada as we have a letter from his brother Thomas to my 2gt gmo giving his address as 24 St Lawrence Arcade and linked to George giving his parents as Thomas Hopper (a mason) and Mary (Palmer) this would be confirmation.

If he was a man of adventure then maybe he headed off to Australia as there is no one really jumping out of the UK censuses as being George on his return.

The only George Hopper on the 1881 England census who was I sailor that I could find was in Bishopwearmouth, Durham but family trees posted at Ancestry indicate this George had different parents than Mary's George.

Thank you for all of this information. Even though we haven't found George Hopper it will certainly help the researcher who is looking for George.

Regarding George Hopper Sr, he is not buried in St.James with his wife. Mary Felstead Hopper is buried with her parents and brother William (but she is not mentionned on the monument) Her mother bought the plot when her father died in 1875.

INSCRIPTIONS FROM A MONUMENT ON THIS LOT (COPIED IN 1980)

OUR DARLING MOTHER ANN KINGSTON BELOVED WIFE OF GEORGE
FELSTEAD DIED JAN. 24 1898 AGED 73 YEARS
A NATIVE OF CO. CORK IRELAND
WILLIAM FELSTEAD DIED OCT. 28 1930
AND HIS BROTHER JOHN FELSTEAD

[Notice that the date of death of old George Felstead is not mentionned on the monument]

The story (as those stories go, but sometimes there is a nugget of truth) is that George Hopper Sr left his children with their grandma and then went back to England, and that he was a sailor. There were Kingston men who were sailors and Ann Kingston Felstead's brother was a captain on a Great Lake Vessel, so the story is at least plausible. Sailors are especially hard to find on census.

George Hopper owned a little bit of land in York township, next to the Felstead, but he sold it after 1878.

By the way, the address of 24 St.Lawrence's Arcade is the address of a butcher shop in St.Lawrence Market, not a home address. In those days, all butcher in Toronto (City by-law) had to have a stall at St.Lawrence Market. It was a bit of monopoly so a very lucrative business.

Anyway, George Hopper owned a part of a lot about 10 acres I think in York township 1st concession from the Bay, lot 9.
You can see it on the 1878 County Map for York county at

http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/showmap.php?Tow...

Right next to him is Ann Felstead. She owned the land until her death, then to her two sons equally.

anyway, the Felstead land is where Monarch Park is located now, and the land owned by George Hopper is at Coxwell and Danforth now.

Their birth were not registered, but most of them were baptized in Anglican churches shortly after their birth.
The Felstead (and George Hopper) lived in Leslieville around Leslie and Kingston Rd. They used the Little Trinity church for baptisms until the Anglican church of St.John's Norway was opened in the Beach area, circa 1855. Before that, they were recorded mostly in St.James cathedral.

Little Trinity Baptism Register 1861-1896
Anglican Diocese of Toronto Archives, Toronto

#3284

George Felstead s/o George and Mary Hopper, butcher, Toronto, born October 9, 1875, baptized January 30, 1876, sponsors: Francis Nicolson, John Felsted, Susannah Nicolson, clergy: Alex Sanson.
Baptismal records can be obtained from the Anglican Diocese of Toronto Archives.

From the baptismal records that I have seen pretty much everyone in the household on the 1901 census lied about his age.

3 39 30 Schmidt Albert A M Head M Apr 2 1859 41
3 40 30 Schmidt Catharine F Wife M Jan 23 1859 42
[date of birth from baptism is Jan 23 1856]
3 41 30 Schmidt Ruby F F Daughter S Dec 14 1884 16
3 42 30 Felstead Wm M Brother-in-law S Nov 12 1868 32
3 43
[William is born 1864 from 1871 census]
30 Hopper George M Nephew S Aug 10 1877 23
3 44 30 Norton Sarah J F Sister-in-law M Jul 4 1861 39
[Sarah Jane aka Jennie was born in 1858]

Source Information:
1901 Census of Canada
Subdistrict:	Ward/Quartier No. 2, TORONTO (East/Est) (City/Cité), ONTARIO
District Number:	117
Subdistrict Number:	b-29
Archives Microfilm:	T-6498

so I guess the answer is that I have no idea where the 10 August 1877 dates come from. But it is not unusual, a lot of people felt very uncomfortable about giving their date of birth on the 1901 census (just like they do now) , and they lied by changing at least one digit, usually the year of birth.

George Hopper was 3 when his mother died. Who knows what stories he was told, and which one he told about his own childhood to his grandchildren. He is more likely to have changed his name to please his unmarried uncle William Felstead who owned quite a bit of property in the Woodbine area, than his grandmother Anne who died in 1898. Supposedly, there was quite a bit of land and a house where the Felstead Street is in Toronto nowadays.

The property owned by George Felstead Sr (who died in 1875) was left equally to the two only surviving sons, who were minors at the time. The many daughters got only cash. The two brothers had a falling out supposedly. John G. married and moved to Brantford where he died in 1913. William Felstead never married and died in 1930.

In that context, changing name to Felstead might have been a good investment for George Hopper.

Do you know where the birth date of 10 Aug 1877 comes from? That's the date of birth listed on the 1901 census for George Hopper.

That story about the changing of the surname just doesn't make sense to me since the children do appear as Hopper on two census years with their grandmother plus George on an additional census and Ann being married with the name. Why wouldn't their grandmother give their surnames as Felstead if that was a "condition" of their being taken in?

Gotta say - I'm glad this isn't one of my lines because it is so confusing.

Jacquie

This certainly would be a little easier if their births had actually been registered in Ontario.

I am not related either but I have done a lot of research in the Kingston family.
George Felstead Hopper was born in October 1875 and probably named in honor of his grandfather George Felstead who had just passed away in January 1875.
Both George and Annie May Hopper were baptized at Little Trinity Church. They seem to have been raised by their grandmother after their mother died in 1878.
You are right, George and Annie appear with the name Hopper on the various census until 1901 when George Hopper disappear, but a George Felstead with same profession in same area appears.

When he married Helen Ivy Jackson, George Felstead stated he was 26 (born 1884) but on his CEF attestation papers, he stated he was born in 1887 October 10th.

George Felstead Hopper is listed as born October 9th 1875 on his baptismal record.

George would not be the first person to fudge his year of birth, especially when marrying a younger woman, or joining the army.

His uncle John George Felstead (known as Arthur to his family) keep claiming he was born in 1865, but he appears as a baby on the 1861 census, so born in 1860.

The information about George Hopper and George Felstead on his marriage record is extremely puzzling. The Defries were a related family. I'm not too sure why he would claim his mother was a Defries (except they were rich) I've also researched the Defries a lot, and he does not fit in that family.

The information about George Hopper and George Felstead being the same person come from the following post by a descendant:

From Rootsweb:

Does anyone have any information regarding the family of George and his
sister, Annie-May who were born to a Felstead mother and Hopper father.
George was born September, 1875. His mother passed away and his father
wanted to go back overseas (?) so he went to his mother-in-law who
agreed to take the two children on the condition that she be able to
adopt them and change their last name to Felstead. George was married
to Helene Jackson, they lived in the Toronto area and he passed
away May 3, 1957.

Thanks for any help.

Jannette Felstead

Source: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ontario/1998-0...

You might want to contact Jannette, to see what else she might have.

Here is what I have on George Felstead of Toronto. George K.Felstead, gardener, voted in Toronto in 1830 for the Provincial Elections. Given the land ownership requirement, he had to own land in Toronto or County of York. He died before 1861 census. I have him buying leasing land in the 1840s. A few Felstead were married in Toronto in the period 1839-1847, I assume they are all his children, since no other Felstead is around. Here is my small list of descendants, it is a work in progress.
The Defries were also gardener who came to Toronto in 1829 and were from Devonport, Devon England. I wonder if the families knew each other in England.

I'm not related to this family but I was doing a look up for someone researching George Hopper (Sr).

Ruth indicates that the two children at times used the Falstead/Felstead name but I wanted to let anyone researching them know that George Hopper (Jr.) is on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Canada census as George Hopper while sister Ann is listed as Hopper on the 1881 and 1891 Canada census (same household as George).

I do have a question for Ruth. I've seen the marriage registration for George Felstead and Helen Jackson and the information for George seems to be really out compared to the information on George Hopper. George Felstead married in 1910 and it says he was 26 which would give a birth year of 1884. George Hopper was born about 1876. It also has George Felstead's parents as George Felstead and Ann Dufrese. I know George Hopper's grandfather was George Felstead and his grandmother was named Ann but I thought her maiden surname was Kingston. Also the 1911 census has George and Helen Felstead in Toronto with a daughter born in Jan 1911 (it's difficult to read the name but could be Eileen) which matches this couple but it says that George was born about 1886 in the USA and emigrated in 1889. How certain are you that the George Felstead who married Helen Jackson is the same person as George Hopper?

Jacquie

Hi There,
I am a descendant of Benjamin Felstead as his son George E Felstead wass my great, great grandfather. I have traced this line of the Felstead family back to Henry Felstead b.1715 in Hertfordshire England he married Elizabeth Newman in 1745. I would love to hear from others who are also descendants of Benjamin and Lydia. I am putting a family history booklet together for my parents and would really love to hear from people who may have photo's ect of these Felstead's.
Thanx, Kylie

Are you still researching your grandfather, George Felstead? If your Grandfather Felstead (occ: Butcher) married Helen Ivy Jackson, then I have recorded two generations further back on your grandfather's genealogy. You will find your grandfather's birth name was "George Hopper, Junior" (1876-1957) with sister Annie Hopper, b. 1877. Their mother, Mary Kathleen Felstead, died age 23, after which the children adopted (off & on) the surname "FELSTEAD" of their maternal grandparents and mother, Mary Kathleen Felstead. Excerpt from: Ann May Hopper-Felstead marriage to Charles Hamilton:
Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1922
Name: Ann May Hopper
Birth Place: Toronto
Age: 22
Father Name: George Hopper [Sr)
Mother Name: Mary "Falstead" (sic)
--- [My comments]: Father [of Ann]: George Hopper [Sr].
Mother: Mary "Falstead"(sic). ["Mary Kathleen FELSTEAD"]
Estimated birth year:abt 1879(sic). [Ann May Hopper was b. 1877]
Spouse Name: Chas Hamilton
[George Hopper-Felstead, Jr, b. 1876, was brother of Bride Ann.]
Please RSVP to this message board. My main research is FELSTEAD family historical genealogy. Thanks. Ruth
Hi Ruth,

Do you have information about Anne Kingston? I am trying to track her to Cork, Ireland. Her parents were Paul and Anne Kingston, arrived in Toronto in 1835. They had 10 children (at least) Most of the family is buried in St.James cemetery in Toronto, except for the Kingston that moved to Middlesex county.

Did any of the Felstead sons have issue?

Hi Kate
I am a descendant of the Felsteads, as one of Benjamin and Lydia's daughters, Eliza Felstead, was my great-great-grandmother. In your post about your ancester Thomas Felstead, I found it interesting that you mentioned Chewton (also known as Forest Creek) because I believe that Eliza was born there circa 1859. She was the only one of 13 siblings born in Victoria, as when her brother was born in 1850 the family was back in NSW. I had been wondering why the family was in Chewton at the time of Eliza's birth, perhaps her uncle Thomas was already there then?
Please feel free to email me at watts111@activ8.net.au
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Triselda

Hi Tania
Thanks for the info. There is of course the 1901 Census , which throws up Frances Hannah aged 26. No mention of the Step sons Thomas, Martin or William. Any clues??

I have obtained a copy of Frances Hannah's Birth Cert
Born Holborn 21/12/1874 Her Mother is Stated as Francis Ann Simmonds nee Wilkes. Father was Thomas Simmonds.

Is it Possible that John Felstead Married Frances (1878) and that Frances was his 2nd wife, in which case Thomas Simmonds either left or Died. I have found a death registration for a Thomas Simmonds who died aged 40yrs in 1876 (Holborn).

Please be free to contact me direct by e-mail: allan.miles1@btopenworld.com.
Hi Irene,

I have found no connection between my Felstead's of Leics and those of Norfolk, but have had no reason to do so. There were Felstead's in Leics in the 1600's (possibly earllier) and believe the same surname may be found in Norfolk in that timeframe.

One theory is the the name originates from the Parish of Felstead in Essex. Felstead is about 4 miles from Great Dunmow. Possibly both our Felstead lines originated from there!

Regards,

Jerry

Hi
I have just seen your message on the board. I was born in Norfolk and am trying to trace our tree and wondering if we have any connections to the Felsteads of Leicestershire I must say so far I have not found a link after nearly 2 years of searching the papertrail, but as this is such an unusual name I think somehow we must be connected
Any help you can give me would be appreciated
Kind Regards
Irene Felstead

Hi Kate
I live in the US. My grandfather came over in 1913, Thomas R. Felstead. His father was also Thomas Felstead and his was Charles Felstead. My grandfather's sister Matilda (Till) and her family went to Australia. I remember them coming here and meeting them in the 1950's. They had a girl my age named Kathy. Does any of this sould like a match?
If not, its been nice talking. Good luck.
Florence

Hello Elaine and Simon: your messages were also sent to me in America. My grandfather was Thomas R. Felstead born in Edmonton, Nov.10, 1882. His father was also Thomas, b. Sept 28, 1853 in Edmonton, and his father was Charles Felstead b. 1812 in Edmonton. There are quite a few Felstead here in America. I don't know if that is of any use to you. My grandfather Thomas R. came here in 1913 and stayed with his family. I was surprised to find how many Felsteads there are. Good luck in your hunt.
Florence

I have also been looking for Felstead relatives. My grandparents were Thomas and Florence Felstead(Hartles).
My grandfather Felstead's sister was Polly and she married a man named Albert Goodacre and they had 8 children. The other sibilings of my grandfather were Charles(America), Henry(I believe England), Hellen (America, went by Nell) and Matilda (Australia). I got this info. from may Grandmother and my mother.so I think it is pretty accurate, but who knows. The name Goodacre is just such a coincidence. My grandfather came over in 1911 and my gram in 1913.
Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for the information. Do you have any connection to the Felstead family? I see you have posted re Burtons on the Constitution. I was aware of the diary and therefore the smallpox outbreak but was unaware that there was a memorial to those who died. Anyone interested in the Hutchin family may wish to know that we are also shortly publishing a book on the story of the family in the rual village of Albury, Herts. It provides an insight into the background of these working class folk during the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions relating many aspects of their everyday lives to the great changes that swept Britain during this time. It is a story that could so easily relate to any agricultural family living in rural England in the 1800s and may prove of interest to a broader audience.
