I believe Mary was a daughter of Stephen Fennell b.1800 in S.C. and Annis Unknown b: 1800 S.C. Stephen was the son of Henry Fennell b. 1780 d 1935 S.C. Some people think that a Isham Fennell b. 1760 may have been Henry father, but have not found evidence yet.

Hope this helps

My dad was Roy Wendell Fennell, born July 30, 1902. I have since found a relative who was related to my dad's first wife, Opal Ellis. There was a daughter born named Arlene, my half sister, whom I never met. And according to this relative, Arlene had already died. Tell me some more names of your Fennell relatives and let's see if we can make a connection. Thanks for your reply.

Shirley Fennell Blackard

There are some black families with this name (tho I'm white.) I was reading a sports page in Augusta once and a black basketball player for Augusta College with the same name as mine was on the front page.

There are many origins of this surname.

There is an Irish Fennell that derives from Gaelic, originally written something like "Fionghail", and it means "fair valour".

There is an English Fennell that derives from the word the Angle word "fenn" and the common surname suffix "nell" (e.g. Parnell, Cornell) that means "a son of" or "of the family", and it means "son of a bog dweller".

My uncle thinks we are "fair valours", but I think it's more likely that we are bog dwellers.

There are Huguenot, Italian, and Polish names that are similar sounding, too.

I am looking for information on Mary Fennell born 1826 In Emanuel County Ga. Married in Apr. 4, 1849 in Emanuel county Ga. to Michael Mixon born 1826. They lived in Burke County Ga. and had 2 daughters, Jane born 1850 and Ann born 1853. Both Mary and Michael were dead before 1860 and their daughters were supposedly sent to live in Johnson County. We have heard the story that Michael was killed by his brother during an argument. I would appreciate any info you might have about this and am wondering if this might be part of your line.

Thanks

Vivian

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for that response. I don't have much more to add to the information I have already put up. I'm trying to get myself a copy of the wedding records from WA to get more, but currently have nothing other than a wedding date and place, which I found through Ellen Jackson's details. Even the year of birth that I have has no firm evidence to support it, and I don't think he moved to Victoria with Ellen and his children. I'll keep digging, though, and get back in touch if I find more.

Thanks again,

Kylie

check details of grandchildren of Patrick (Mangles 1822)& Ellen(Eleanor)nee Dillon MARRIED 1826(father Thomas Dillon 1800) your Thomas Fennell may be a child of one of their sons Thomas Aloyius(1st), John(2nd) or Daniel(4TH)(of 13 children). I have descended from Stephen 3rd son (1829)Thomas Aloyisus died around 1864 he was married to Harriet(nee Pabst) see Germantown(Holbrook). I have scant information on either of these sons of Patrick & ELLEN.iF you can get any information such as details on your Thomas death notice and burial site would help greatly. the three eldest sons including Thomas Aloysius,John and Stephen went to the CAlifornia gold rush in 1849 folklore??? possible birthplace is Campbelltown or Wagga Wagga as most were Licencees of Hotels. any documentation when your great grandparents were married and your grandfathers birth certificate will help piece together the more of theclan information. regards stephen fennell email: stephen.fennell@deedi.qld.gov.au

If the name of Moses or Morris Fennell is correct, this family
is probably descended from a slave belonging to the Fennel family of Trinity which moved from Virginia about 1818. One of their daughters married a Reverend Moses Morris. It appears
that this Moses Fennell married several times as he is shown divorced in 1910 living with his parents Alex and Mary Fennell in Decatur and married again by 1930 (married 4 yrs).
Hope this helps.

We are quite sure that my husband's grandfather, Charles John Fennell, who I am researching, lived at 32 Little Coram St. in St Pancras, in the 1881 census. He was Henry & Mary (Ferguson) Fennell's son (John Fennell & Emma Burroughes son). He moved to Ontario, Canada when he was 14 as a home child and in 1907 married Mary St. Louis in Carp, ON. He died in 1960 Ottawa (where his 3 children were born- my father-in-law, Ernest Albert, the youngest b. 1917-d. 1989. Charles had a sister, Emma E. b. about 1775. We think she came to Canada too, but don't know what happened to their parents.Since Charles came to Canada as a Home Boy, we assume that something happened to the parents. If anyone has any other information on this family or the extended family, we'd appreciate it.
Linda

I think there must be two Ellens, yes! My Ellen was Ellen Hall Jackson, daughter of Thomas Jackson (alias Sidney Hall when he was convicted if break and enter and transported as an 18 year old - Ernest's middle name was also Sidney). Her mother was Mary Hennessy as you noted and she had several siblings as well.

Hope that helps get to the bottom of things!

Hi Kylie,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am still puzzled, I brought the bth cert for Ernest born 22 April 1894, it states that Ellen was 24 years old, my Ellen would have been 37 years of age in 1894. On Ellen's death reg., 1917 aged 50 (this puts her born c.1867)it says her parents were Thos. Jackson and Mary Hennessy, my Ellen her parents were Thomas Pavia Jackson and Catherine Lyons and she was born 1857 so I guess there must be two Ellen's that married Fennells??????????

Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the information.

I think there might be no listing for the sons of Ellen Jackson and Thomas Fennell on the pioneer index because both sons took on their stepfather's surname, Hales. I have my information about them from the Victorian Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages, backed up by family anecdotes about the name change. Ellen Hales (nee Jackson) died in 1917 in Essendon, Victoria, from the same sources.

William went on to cut a fairly large figure in Victorian society as one half of the Craig and Hales confectionary company and in local government politics. He had 2 children and died in 1949. Ernest had one daughter, and worked in the airline industry back in the early days of commerical air travel. He died in 1979.

I'm not certain if the Thomas that you found is related, but I will see what else I can dig up with that bit of information.

Thanks!

Kylie

I have inherited photos of people I don't know from my deceased aunt (Dicey Griffith) who has been gone for many years. One photo that looks like it may have been from the 40's is of a toddler named Arthur Temple Fennell and notes that he is 16 months old. There are other photos of people I do not know. I can scan this picture and forward it if you are interested. There are other photos that I could send that are not identified. My family lived in Baltimore City when I was born. If interested, give me an e-mail address and I will forward this picture. If it is your Arthur, maybe the other picture will be of interest.
