Re Parker family. I note that the Parker family trees include Ann Fenton who married Robert? Parker. One of us is incorrect, as I have Ann married to John T Taylor in 1842 at Port Macquarie, NSW. I would be interested in 'talking' to someone who is working on the Parker Tree to try and sort this matter out. There were possibly two Ann Fentons in NSW at the time and we need to sort this matter out. My direct email is mbblake@bigpond.com

Michael Blake

Just seen this thread which has been going for 10 years. Must be a record. I think David should tell us his source of the interesting information (22 Aug 2009) about Thomas Fenton, my great-grandfather. It agrees mostly with my own version of the family history, except for (old) Dr Victor's sons who were Col. Roberto and Alfredo. The latter started a cattle farming business with his father in N. Argentina which bankrupted them (the cattle sickened and died and the locals hated them), Alfredo subsequently becoming a bank manager. He was the first person to swim across the mouth of the River Plate.

I am more interested in the earlier Fentons, Capt Edward and Sir Geoffrey. There is a picture of the famous bowling scene in 1588 which features Edward standing close to Drake. I have a Haklyut's Voyages series that gives an account of Edward's earlier abortive trip to the Far East in 1582. He ends up sacking Buenos Aires instead and seems to have been generally disliked so it is surprising he was given the command of the Mary Rose in 1588(not same Mary Rose that was recently restored). He was buried at Deptford and the church now on the site has a memorial to him.

I have Sir G dying in 1608. He is buried in St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin.

But the most important question for any Anglo-Irish Fentons today is: if Capt Edward had no children and Geoffrey's son William also had none, what is the origin of the family in Ireland? That is the only gap I have in a tree going back to about 1100.

Any further information will be gratefully received.

Paul Fenton

Re: Andrew Fenton, USS Monitor

After my studying this subject in some detail, it appears that Andrew Fenton most likely did NOT serve on the USS Monitor. Indeed, this was the conclusion recently reached by John V. Quarstein -- who has studied the Monitor's crew for decades -- in his 2011 book, "The Monitor Boys" (although he came to the conclusion for the wrong reason, erroneously writing at page 300 that there was "no indication . . . of any naval service" by Fenton). Fenton appears on no 19th-century muster rolls for the USS Monitor, especially the two official crew rosters compiled contemporaneously to her 1862 voyages -- in March and November -- before she sank at the end of the year. Instead, official navy records and other contemporary documents actually show Fenton serving on another monitor-class ship, launched in September 1862, when he first joined the navy. Therein probably lies the confusion. Notwithstanding Tom Cunningham's June 2011 posts here, when I spoke to him at the turn of the year on the telephone, he adamantly concurred with the foregoing conclusion. Tom promised to provide whatever documents he had, but never did so, and no longer responds to repeated requests. In Fenton's later years, he did give an interview or two to reporters, saying he served on "the" Monitor; however, the details he provided were mostly consistent with his service and experiences on a different, monitor-class ship. In this, Fenton was not alone. Numerous people in the 20th century incorrectly claimed to be a survivor of the USS Monitor. Having said all this, if anyone has any proof or corroboration of Andrew Fenton's service on the USS Monitor, I -- as well as many others -- would certainly like to see it posted here. But in its absence, the "last survivor" of the USS Monitor is almost certainly not Andrew Fenton, although he indeed had a most admirable naval career.

Seeking info on Fentons in Onieda County, New York (1840's-1940's)
I am seeking any info that would link Nellie ____ (I believe- Fenton) who was born 17 Mar 1867 in the hamlet of Glenmore, Town of Annsville, Oneida County, New York directly to a FENTON family. I believe she was "adopted" by a Clarke Mace and his wife, Mary Potter, of Floyd, New York, who moved to Boonville, Oneida County, New York in the 1860's.

Nellie married John Blum in Utica, NY on 31 Mar 1890 and died 26 Dec 1934 in Boonville- she was the mother of one daughter- Eliza Nellie Blum born Feb 1891 in Boonville, NY.

According to family tradition she was aware of her connections to Fenton family members. I think she may have been a daughter of Willis Fenton b. ca. 1828 (in perhaps Lee Center/Annsville, Oneida Co., NY) and/or a sister of Chester Fenton b. 22 Oct 1860 Annsville, Oneida Co., NY. Chester's wife was Hattie Brainerd and he died in 1921 in Taberg, Oneida Co., NY.

Nellie is listed as a niece of Elon Fenton in his obituary. Elon was born 5 May 1844 in the Town of Lee, Oneida Co., NY son of Eli & Margaret Fenton. Elon Fenton died 17 May 1925 in Rome, Oneida Co., NY.

see:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~townoflee/Ob...

I also believe Nellie may have had some connection to the Beckwith family in the town of Western, Oneida Co., NY. through a maternal line (if her mother was Eliza Beckwith b ca 1832).

Thank you!

Greetings,

I'm looking for information on the birthplace and parents of Sarah Fenton, born between 1755 and 1765, who married Peter Goslin, born 1758 in Bucks County, PA.

Several trees identify her father as a Richard Fenton from Currituck, NC, but that seems implausible to me, as do listings showing Sarah's birthplace as Ohio. There were at least two Fenton lines in Bucks County at the time she was born. One tree lists her father as John Fenton, the son of Josiah, whose family was from Buckingham Twp. I've also seen an GenForum post to that effect, and am wondering if the link can be substantiated.

Thank you,
John

I did a search on Ancestry.com. Found a William George Fenton, born June 4, 1921 in Vermont and Died December 13, 1981 in Buffalo, New York. Hopefully, knowing his middle name and exact birthdate will help you refine your search. I did not find anything else, except his social security number, which I don't want to post here. I tried to email you with that information, but the email was returned. Best of luck in your search.

There are a lot of Fenton's from the New York area in West Chester,OH. It seems when they came into the east coast they went down the Erie Canal and spinkled off in Penn, Ohio. My family came from the Springfield area of Ohio 3 generations and out of Penn before that. My grandfather had a brother named william would have been born around 1873. Best bet for you is search along the Erie Canal for Fenton's alot of those who went west came back east just as fast.

BOth of my parents were divorce in 1975. His mother's name is Mary Parker and I dont know his father's name since his parent divorced and his mother remarried. She married to Frederick Danforth and I know they had a son name Jack Danforth which would make half brother to my father. what I would love to know who is my father's father and if my father have other sibling beside his half brother Jack.
I have recently become interested in tracing my grandmother's ancestry in Ireland. I have little information, as my mother, one of her daughters, is now dead. My grandmother was a Fenton and they came from Comostouw (Spelling?) near Kilmakerin, Cahirciveen in Kerry. My grandmother was Johanna Fenton and she married Bartholomew Moriarty. They eloped to America (Boston) for a few years and then returned to Kilmakerin, to run a small shop, a forge and a farm, where they raised a family of 13.I think my grandmother had a brother called Dan. One of her brothers was in the Irish Constabulary and I think one was a road surveyor. I see that you posted your enquiry some years ago, so I'm not especially hopeful of a reply!
Regards
Maureen Knight

There a couple of books floating around - one with a bright pink cover is a series of foolscap sheets (hard to adapt to A4)and this deals mainly with the Fentons - apart from the early bits about the arrival of John (pre 1870 as he married Ellen Hurley in Dalby in 1870); Mary and Catherine in late 1872; and until now I have not been able to ascertain much about Rose - but have in the last couple of weeks established that she came out here in 1891. (There are a few inconsistencies in this "book".)
However, there was a publication done for a Hurley reunion in the early 90s which details all the Graceys from the John Hurley/Ellen Gracey line - which includes "us". It details our grandparents and their brothers and sisters.
I do live and work in Brisbane - and will look forward to catching up once my schedule settles a bit. As I mentioned my aunt in Melbourne is the last surviving child of my father's family - she is 96 but very alert - and has some good yarns to tell - lives in Melbourne.
The only conclusion I can come to about the Cartin/Mulholland bit is that perhaps Isabelle was widowed then married Crumwell - both the Cartin (or McCartan) and Mulholland names are very prominent round Co Down - and well-respected!! Am still pursuing this trail.
Cheers
PJS

Pauline, the thing that is a little confusing in all this "Gracey" think is Crumwell's wife Isabelle. My brother Bob has a sheet of paper which says she was "mullholland" however a lot of the trees have "Carlin" as her name. I think Bob got this sheet of paper from someone when he went to Cooyer or hooked up with some of the Graceys. It is supposedly a copy of what is in a book still held by someone. Do you know anything about it. I am also trying to get a copy of the book that Shannon has showing all the Fentons and some of the Graceys. I have asked her to email it to me but...I think she might have misplaced it. do you have a copy? and...if so...would it be possible to email one to me? Thanks Vicki

Hi Vicki
We share a common line. Your grandfather - "Uncle Bob" and my grandmother (Annie Isobel) were brother and sister. I remember Bob and Gladdie quite well - especially when they were living at Upper Coomera - though I remember "Uncle Bob" earlier than that. I also remember my grandmother talking about the "bedside wedding" of your father, I think. There was another "bedside wedding" in the family, too - one of the Hales (Gordon, from memory), so I am inclined to confuse the two. Mary Hale, his mother, was a sister to your grandfather. I also remember most of his other siblings - Rose, Kit, Charlie, but not Albert(Money) though my father had tales to tell having worked with him in the Bunyas during the 30s. Albert's wife Eva was still living in Toowoomba when I taught there in the early 70s.
Since last posting I have unearthed some more material on the Rose Gracey in the previous generation - sister to John Gracey and Kate Fenton as well as to Mary (Sister Mary Malachy)and James Crumwell who went to Philadelphia.
Would also love to meet up sometime - though very little of what I know is documented.
Pauline S

Hi. Crumwell Gracey (not James Crumwell) was my great great grandfather who had John Gracey (brother of Catherine and Mary, rose & Kate)who came to Queensland in 1860. He married in 1870 and had my grandfather Robert John Gracey who then had my father Allan Walter Gracey in 1927. You are free to view my tree if you wish.

Hello Peter. I am another descendant of Thomas Fenton. My great grandmother was the eldest child of Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Moody Hopwood or Hopewood. Her name was Tamar Fenton and I believe she was known as Tai. She was born in Tuapeka, Southland, N.Z.in May 1864 but spent most of her life living in the Savusavu area of Vanua Levu, Fiji. She had one child, my grandfather, Robert Haynes. Our family still own a small piece of one of Robert Haynes properties in Savusavu so we visit there regularly. For that reason I am very interested to find out more information about the family. During our visit in July we went to Navava Estate where Thomas and Elizabeth lived to fix Tamar's grave. A coconut tree fell on it years ago and broke the side off it. That is also where Elizabeth Moody Fenton is buried and her son Henry Moody Fenton. I believe Thomas and Johnny are buried further up the coast at Levukalailai and on my next visit I will try to go there to take photographs of their graves. I will check out the link you have given on 'rootsweb'. Jeanine and I recently met for the first time and that is how I got your contact details. I look forward to making further contact and if you want to email me you can do so to carolgordonnz@gmail.com
Kind regards,
Carol
