Ferrier/Deweese/Monroe family connection

In the 1880 Kansas census James E. and Mary J. Ferrier nee DeWeese were in the same household as my Greatgreatgrandparents Richard and Melvina Monroe nee DeWeese. In 1910 James appeared as a witness to my Greatgrandparents Robert H. and Della P. Monroe nee Kent's marriage in Republic, WA. In 1920 Federal census Thomas J. and Ethel Ferrier (Thomas is the son of James E and Mary J. Ferrier) are living with Robert and Della Monroe in Chelan. I have been unable to find Melvina any where else. Is this name familiar to anyone. I have thought that Mary and Melvina may have been sisters or perhaps cousins. Any ideas?

I have this info from an online family tree of Thomas Ferrier:

David Ferrier was born in Angus, Scotland and was a weaver by trade. He served in the British 53rd Regiment of Foot (aka First Battalion of the Shropshire Light Infantry) during the American Revolution in 1777. He was discharged from the army at the signing of the peace treaty in 1784. After discharge he went to the United States where he met Mary Sabins, whose father William was killed by the rebels at the battle of Bennington in 1777. William Sabins was a Loyalist who served under General Burgoyne. David and Mary were probably married in 1785 and lived in Hoosick Town, New York State. David and Mary had 11 children.

a) John Ferrier (before 1787 - after 1840)
b) David Ferrier Jr (christened June 30, 1788)
c) Elias Ferrier (christened June 18, 1797) m. Elizabeth Cameron on June 5,1823
d) James Ferrier (christened July 25, 1799)
e) Jonathan (christened October 31, 1802) m. Rachel Perkins on December 18, 1828
f) Joseph Ferrier (1804 - ?) m. Mary Bagero on January 20, 1830
g) Elizabeth Ferrier (1806 - ?) m. Isaac Perkins on October 1, 1829 and ? m. Joshua Dexter on April 2, 1933
h) Margaret Ferrier (February 3, 1808 - ?) m. John Lunoon March 14, 1826
i) William Ferrier (April 10, 1810 - ?) m. Cynthia Brand on January 3, 1832
j) Benjamin Ferrier (1812 - ?) m. Nancy MacAteer on January 26, 1838
k) Mary Ferrier (1814 - ?) m. David Martin on June 12, 1833

Their is a large family of Ferry family living in Northeast Nebraska, USA, who can trace their direct male line back to DeFerriers in Normandy France. My Aunt married a Ferry, so my first cousens are of the same Ferry line. The blood line is alive and well, and will offer a DNA test with ancestry.com soon to find common ancestors and linked family lines in the USA and overseas.

Hi Brad,

I completely forgot about my post. I have been focusing on another branch for quite a few years.

Unfortunately, I realized several months ago, making me heartsick, that I have misplaced a notebook which has a lot of family info in it. I know it is in the house, I just don't know where. At any rate, I will have to dig out my paper notes in a rubbermaid bin in my basement. (I know where they are!) I am so sorry about not having much to share with you at this time. Sadly, I don't have any info about Oak Grove Cemetery in my computer records, so now I am curious about what info I had back in 2003 to have had me post specifically on that cemetery.

My great great grandmother, Mary Ferrier married Morrison Gray in Dundee, Scotland in 1882. They immigrated to the US in 1921. Do you have any Gray's in your tree?

I plan on digging out my papers tonight or this weekend. It is probably time I revisited this branch of my family anyway, since records are always added to the internet.

Please bear with me and I hope we can touch base again after I go through my papers.

Wendy

There may be more Ferriers from my tree who are buried there, my records are are far from complete.
If you're still monitoring these boards after all this time, I've love to compare notes!

My family (GGGrandfather, Francis Ferrier B: 1788 M: GGGrandmother,Julie (Giroud)Ferrier B: 1798) moved to Clinton, NY from Lower, Canada prior to 1861, I know this because my GGrandpa (Albert Ferrier, B: 8 APR 1838 in Lower, Canada) enlisted into the US military in 1861 and was discharged in 1864, and married my GGrandma (Mary Adele Gokey(Adele Mary Gautier)B: 9 Dec 1843) in 3/28/1864 in Chateaugay, NY.

I cannot find any information into Canada. Or of this move.

They then moved from Clinton,NY Prior 1880 to Big Rapids, MI- That Census shows this and all children were born in NY, must have moved to Big Rapids in 1879

Can anyone help me with my family in Canada prior to the New York area? I'm thinking maybe a name change (?) Family rumors say that it was once LaFerriera, but I have no prof of this.
Please help, I have hit a brick wall across the boarders.
Alyce
Arnoutsa@msn.com

Re: Andrew Ferrier (1800-1876) Indiana Co., PA

Dear swferrier,

Your message to Mr Thayer's of Feb 2006 appeared on our in-box this morning. Two items alerted me: your reference to Black Watch suggested Scottish origin and Indiana Co PA also struck a high note.

I knew that Indiana Co was the location of one or some of Capt Andrew Ferrier's descendants. Seaching my Family Tree Maker records I found the connection immediately. Andrew (1800-1876) was the grandson of Capt Andrew. His father, Thomas, was the younger brother of my ancestor John, second son of Capt Andrew & Jean Marlin. I usually record whatever family info I find but do not trace the lateral lines as I am plenty busy going backward.

Which brings us to Scotland. Bagpipes have always thrilled me. I knew that my father had some Scottish blood so, much later when I got into genealogy, I asked Dad what part of Scotland the family came from. He did not know but said, "I think it is the same area as Sir Walter Scott." Dad was a Naval officer and an electrical engineer so I doubt he had read Scott since he was about 14. I, however, majored in literature, so my internal reaponse was "oh, Edinburgh and Abbotsford."

Without going into a lot of detail about my findings at this time, I request from you an address through which we can correspond. I am willing to share information with you, however, I do not want my researches made public at this stage of the game.

Thanking you for our mutual interest, I am

Sincerely, your distant cousin,

Frances Ferrier Hanks
bhanks@pacbell.net

Interesting read. I believe I have a painting of the Thomas Ferrier in your research, if it is the Thomas Ferrier who served in the Black Watch. I am a decendant of his. Another Thomas Ferrier (Glasgow, Scotland 1882 - Ridley Township 1969) was my great-grandfather. Hias 3rd (I believe) son was Norman Binning Ferrier, married Emma Louise Burbank; 3 children, Norman S. (1945 - 2009), Emma Vrbas (1948? - current) & Margaret Thomas (1951? - current). I am Norman S.' second son, Spencer Wayne. My Brother, Norman J., and I both have children and I would love to be able to contribute to your work.

Sarah Thompson his wife was shown on several census forms as born @ 1827 in Upper Canada or the States.

The Ferriers on your property are my ancestors, Thomas Ferrier (1798-1873) and his wife, Jane Phillips (1806-1848). Both of them and each of their parents came from Tennessee to Missouri prior to 1821 when John and Jane married in Callaway County. The parents of Thomas were Nathaniel Ferrier and Agnes Patterson. Jane's parents were John Phillips and Nancy Allen. I also have information on the others who are buried there; all family members.

Did your family purchase the property within the last few years? I was there about 2006 and took photos of the headstones. At that time, the property was for sale and the man that owned the property said he intentionally had the stones placed face down to preserve the inscriptions but turned them over for my photos. I have always wondered if the property sold and what had become of the private cemetery; I'm so happy to hear that everything is still there. The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society in Fulton also have photos taken from there and more information.

So far I think all ours are from Canada, New York and Michigan. Did some Ferriers own your land at one time? I will get back to you if we find a connection. Thank you so much for letting me know. I am not inchcape just using that address. If you have any questions write to me direct at jowelch1@sbcglobal.net Thanks again.
Elias Ferrier born approx 1796 in US

Hi, I am looking for the parents of Elias Ferrier born approx 1796 in the United States, later dying in Simcoe County, Canada in 1874. He lists on his 1871 census that his origin is Dutch. His Daughter Margaret Ferrier married John Irish in Canada. Does anyone have any information on him or the Ferrier line? Any information would be helpful as I am new to genealogy.

Problems with James S. Ferrier/Sarah L. Nordyke

There are several trees on Ancestry that show a father for James S. Ferrier as James and a mother Susannah. The problem lies in the birth place of his parents. In both the 1910 and 1920 Censuses James S. says his parents were born in Germany and their native tongue was German. The James and Susannah attached on those trees show James and Susannah originating in Pennsylvania. This is a huge problem. I don't believe those trees are accurate. James and Susannah may have had a son named James but it wasn't James S. Some put a James J. in that position. I think there are some bad merges going on.
