Harrison Ferrin, son of Shubael & Marilla, Ontario County, NY

Harrison Ferrin (circa 1840-1919), son of Shubael and Marilla of Ontario County, NY (area around Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes District), married Jane O. Francis and had 5 or 6 children. According to information I just found on the "Our Northern Roots" website and database, Jane died and Harrison married at least 2 more times. His second marriage was to an Alida Ward (according to the website) with whom he had 2 more children, Sarah Ferrin and Lewis Ferrin.

I am particularly interested in this second marriage as my grandfather's sister, Eliza Ward (1856-1925) of Cheshire, NY (also in the Canandaigua area), married a Mr. Ferrin and similarly had 2 children, Sarah Ferrin (aka Sadie/Satie, b. 1879) who married and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, and Lewis Ferrin (1881-1964) who married and lived out his life in Cheshire. At some point after the birth of Lewis in 1881, Eliza separated from Mr. Ferrin and never remarried. The given name of the Mr. Ferrin she had briefly been married to was not passed down in the Ferrin family in Cheshire.

I believe that Alida Ward and Eliza Ward are one and the same person, the wife of Harrison Ferrin. I am hoping that someone out there reading this query will respond with information to help prove this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sharon
Welland, Ontario, Canada

I'm trying to trace my father's side of the family. My father was Harold Clayton Ferrin (1/1/1915 -7/25/1983), an only child of Arthur H. Ferrin and Jennie (Jenny?) Della Owens born in Safford, AZ. Jenny passed away between 1918-1920. I know nothing about her side of the family. Arthur was the only son born to Joseph Ferrin (a "miner 49r" ) and Therese Marx Ferrin ("The Angel of Tucson") approx. 1885 in Tucson, AZ. That's about as much information that I have on my dad's side of the family. If anyone has any information, I'd be so thankful!

Jonathan Ferrin's Origins?

Lots of good info written about him in the book and town history. Has anyone come up with any firm info (not guesses) on from whence he came? I know he didn't just "appear" in the Amesbury area.
ELI Farren of Lockport NY and his dau. ELVIRA (1800-1846) are of interest to me. She married Seth Seymour of MA. Eli's line is in "the book". Looking for additional info about him and/or his immediate family.
Thanks Rich in NH

I am looking for information about the probable origin of Capt. Johathan Ferrin of Amesbury, MA. He was born about 1697, married Sarah Wells in Amesbury in 1719 and died 5 May 1770. Early researchers could not find his origin, but a card catalog entry at the Family History Library suggests some later researchers believe him to have come to America from Ireland as an indentured servant. I am seeking corraboration.

My family has several dozen old photos, tintypes and very large portraits which we found in a trunk passed down through several generations of my Ferren family. Some of them have names on them, but we do not know their connection to our Ferrens. These include: Nellie Stevens, Alice Shanholt, Wanda Wander, Albert Moffett, Harland Edwards, Bert and Hazel Jackson, Ida Jackson, Hazel Dell Jackson and Charley and Edith (Jackson) Black. Please contact me if you recognize any of these names.

There are also photos of several groups, marked “Ham Ferren Family”, “Ferren Family”, Alto Plantation etc. We have not been able to identify all the individuals in these groups.

Many of the tintypes are soldiers in uniforms and there are quite a few pictures of babies and small children which we also cannot identify.

I know there are several web sites of unidentified photos, but I would like to put copies of our photos on a site which would be seen by researchers familiar with the Ferren/Farren/Ferrin families from NH, NY, MI, MO, KS and AR. These are the states my Ferren ancestors lived in. If anyone can suggest a site such as this please contact me.
Francis FERREN, b. 1821 New York; Descendant of Capt. Jonathan FARREN?
My third great-grandfather, Francis Ferren was born in New York about 1821. I know from census records that both his parents were born in New Hampshire, but I do not have names for either one.

I think it is highly probable that he was a descendent of Jonathan Farren, but I have not been able to make a definite connection. It appears this was the only Farren family in New Hampshire early on.

I know from having seen "Captain Jonathan Farren and Some of his Descendants" that several of the children of Francis' son, Philo Frances Ferren, have names that were common to Captain Jonathan's other descendants,
including Kimble, Alongo and others.

My Ferren family was in New York until at least 1845, then I believe they were in Michigan for a period, before settling in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.

I know that a number of the New Hampshire Farrens moved to New York in the early 19th century. I understand there are few New York records. Do you have any suggestions for how I might determine which one might have fathered Francis?

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Judy McCormick
Obituary: James Farren, d. 8 Feb 1910, Wilderville, OR

Obituary of James Farren (Farren/Ferren/Ferrin)

OLDEST MAN IN OREGON DIED ON BRIGGS CREEK
James Farren Dies at the Good Age of 104 Years and 7 Months
Grants Pass Courier
February 11, 1910

The oldest man in Oregon, James Farren, died on Briggs creek, this county, on Tuesday of this week. Mr. Farren was born in McMinnville, Warren county, Tenn., July 4, 1806, and had he lived until July 4 next, he would have been 105 years old.

At the age of 19 he left his native state and moved to Missouri, where he lived until 1863, when he moved to California and ten years later took up his residence in Josephine county, where he has been known as an industrious and reliable citizen. When he first came to the section he entered into the mining business and in a modest way was successful from the very first. He had a love for agriculture and stock raising and to some extent he engaged in these callings in connection with his regular business of mining.

This man's life extended over many great events in the history of this nation. He was six years old when the war of 1812 broke out and a boy of eight when it closed. Forty years old when the Mexican war occurred, a man of 55 when the Civil war took place. He saw the nation grow from 20,000,000 inhabitants to 80,000,000.

Mr. Farren was the father of a family of 14 children and he outlived them all except three. Two sons, A. Farren and W. Farren, aged respectively 50 and 53 years, and a daughter, Mrs. McClung, aged 46.

They most likely lived in Newry but moved between there to Scotland where their son, Francis Fearon was born. Francis married Harriett Orton in England and immigrated to Phila. PA about 1900. This name is sometimes listed as McFearon or McFarrin also.

I believe the Farrens were related to the Youngbloods of this area, but haven't found the connections yet.

My mother and her mother, Effie Mae Blanton, always referred to Uncle John Youngblood who help my
grandmother obtain her Social Security by verifying his presence at her birth.

She was born on the reservation near Salisaw, OK in 1895. Ida and my grandmother's twin, Delphia Lee, died in 1896. James and his family moved back to Arkansas.

Saturday afternoon, at his home on Jefferson avenue, occurred the death of Francis J. Ferrin, in his sixty-ninth year. He had been in poor health for a long time, having been confined to his bed for the past four months, by heart and lung trouble. Mr. Ferrin was born in Springwater, and had been a resident of this place for nearly forty years, being a carpenter by trade. He had charge of building the Methodist church here, and built and sold twelve or fifteen houses in Fairport. Some years ago he purchased the farm just west of the village where he has since resided. For several years he was engaged in the grocery business, his grocery store being located partly over Thomas creek, and the building being removed when the West Shore railroad was built through that section.

Mr. Ferrin was a prominent member of the Methodist church in its early days, being one of the charter members, and one of the large contributors for the building of the church. He held several offices in the church, that of steward, trustee, and for a number of years was sexton of the church. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, Rev. W. E. Searles officiating. Interment was in Mount Pleasant cemetery.

Mr. Ferrin was three times married, and he leaves his widow and four children: Wilbur and Harvey Ferrin of Rochester, and Mrs. Rosa McKinney and Oscar Ferrin of Fairport. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Patterson of Pittsford, and Mrs. Alice Valentine of Rochester; and two brothers, George E. Ferrin of Fairport, and Sylvanus Ferrin of Despatch.

(Death was 14 Dec 1907. Despatch is the old name for East Rochester. )

For more information about Francis Ferrin's Valentine relatives, click on the following link...
