Hello, my wife and I have been researching her grandfather, Thomas Richard Norman Fetherston, killed in action November 9, 1942. My wifes grandmother was Helen Frazer. We are very interested in any information anyone might have about Thomas.

Seward Large Fetherston was an uncle of my grandfather, John Barr Fetherston, who compiled a Fetherston family tree in the 1930s. This tree has a lot of detail, but alas gives no indication of a link to Sir George Ralph.

My grandfather moved to London in the early 1900s and the other Cork Fetherstons mostly relocated to Ulster.
I am looking for help for death details per Sophia Fetherston (aka Fetherstonhaugh) daughter of Thomas Fetherston and Roxy Ann Landon - she was born in FITZROY HARBOUR, ONT and died in the same place at the age of 13. She may have had a twin brother Arthur. Mother Roxy died in 1884 same place. Found death record in IGI but no luck on death with ancestry so far. Thanks

I notice from your info that William and Sarah's daughter Elizabeth, married John Charles Holmes, who was the son of Richard and Georgina - they were cousins! Interesting....

Do you have any info you could share re Richard and Georgina?

It may eventually, but there is a pretty solid brick wall in my branch at around the 1811 Cork and Ross diocese marriage of William Fetherston and Margaret Graham.
If your family was in Dublin, you may have better results than we have in connecting further back - perhaps to Cuthbert Fetherston in Dublin.
There are some published Irish Fetherston genealogies out there that may go back to 1654 Fetherstons in Longford and Westmeath that may help. Several years ago I read through the ones at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. and if I recall correctly one titled something like "The London Money" regarding Sir Henry Fetherston of London who died without heirs and had significant property. It may have had information from Dublin and from the various baronetages in Ireland.

Here you go, this may help. From FamilySearch catalog.

FHL BRITISH Film
101011 Item 6
The Fetherston family of Ireland from the Upton papers.

Good luck hunting,
Dave

Thank you for the missing pieces. We have looked for Richard's death forever and have been unable to find it. We have nine children but we could be wrong We have Henry and Mary and we have not much information so we could have one of them wrong We had Henry with no info and we had Mary and she was born abt 1859 born in Watergrasshill They could be the same person and that is why we haven't found anything We got them off a census so not sure what we did. We have a fair bit of info on Bessie as her son Charles Fetherston Campbell married his cousin Jane Wilson Fetherston so they become intertwined in my family They all moved to Canada and some have died here Samuel's family got smaller as my dad is the only Fetherston child from Samuel and I have 2 brothers and two nephews to carry on the Fetherston name.If you want to talk directly to me and I can email you a Register from family tree with the info I have my email is kandnwilson@telus.net Also good reasoning for Richard's parents Usually first born are usually named with parents names Talk to you soon You and my dad would be cousins I think and he is 91 and still of very sharp mind.

Just got back from holiday and seen all the new posts, so thought I would add a few of my own!!

Richard was buried, age 53, 19 Sep 1869 at Kilshannig, Co Cork. He was a schoolmaster in Watergrasshill and he was church of Ireland. He married Mary Bolster, (b. abt 1823, died 9 Jul 1894 from senile dementia and intestinal obstruction) whose mother was Catherine Burke, father Richard Bolster, farmer. They had 8 children that I am aware of
John b. 1844 Watergrasshill he was a policeman in 1881
Susan b. 1844 Watergrasshill married William Willis of Cork and moved back to Ireland
Bessie Harrison b. abt 1848 Watergrasshill married Anslow Campbell who was an undergarment manufacturer and they had 7 children
Richard b. 1851 Watergrasshill who married Jane McLaughlin, he was a telegraph superintendant and died 22 Jul 1918 in Glasgow
William b. 1854 Watergrasshill, married Margaret W. Mackenzie d. 28 Jul 1936 in Glasgow, of ureamia, occupation Superintendant of the post office. They had at least 4 children
Henry b. 1859 Watergrasshill
Samuel George b. 1862 Watergrasshill, cigar merchant with Charles in 1901. Married Janet W and in 1901 had 4 children
Charles Edward b. 22 Sep 1864 Watergrasshill. Married Catherine Inglis Cameron (1874 - 1946) and they had 3 children, the eldest of whom Alison Mary Fetherston was my grandmother. Charles died 8 Dec 1942 in Callander. He and Catherine were separated, and he was living with his "house keeper". He had a cigar wholesale business in Glasgow, which his son Charles (known as Chick) took over.

I tend to think that Richards parents could have been John Fetherston and Susanna Lynch due to the naming of their twins, John and Susan, plus the Kilshannig link.

I did not know that Samuel had emigrated, and have no idea what happened to Henry. Any additonal information that anyone can add to this would be most welcome. Where does the Australian connection come from?

I look forward to hearing from any of you
Thanks
Jan

It is possible that they are very closely related, I just can't connect them yet. Elizabeth Jane was a sister to George William Barker Fetherston (my ancestor). I would love to get a hold of the marriage record in Cork and Ross diocese of William Fetherston and Margaret Graham (and may yet find where it is located, besides the index - My hunch is that it is in one of the older churches in Cork itself, but I'm not at all certain of that).
The Fetherston family and Fetherstonhaugh families do appear to have common roots. What I've seen sometimes is that they will change the spelling or ending to distinguish between families with the same names. E.g. Cuthbert, etc. are commonly used fore names in Ireland. Also remember that at one point they did not spell things consistently, but phonetically. I have seen records for my branch listed as Fetherston, Fetherstone, and Featherstone. Fetherston was more common in Ireland and stuck for our branch.
Thanks for the info. I'd love to be able to tie us together in Cork, Ireland and our branches lived near to each other, but I'm afraid there's not a lot of records available.

Richard MAY belong to the Kilshannig by Mallow crowd, but I have little to connect him to John.

I am running into the same thing with William of Mitchelstown.
One of his sons, George William Barker Fetherston, emigrated to Canada, Chicago, then to Rock county Wisconsin and I am from that line.

Richard died before 1871 we figure because Mary was on the census that year by herself with her children I have been in toch with Jocelyn in Brisbane Austraila and she thinks Richard could be a brother to her family She has a William Fetherston born 1813 in Mitchelseon mother Elizabeth jane Fetherston born 1820 in Mitcheltown and she was the daughter of Margaret nee Graham and William Fetherston married in Ross Diocese Co. Cork in 1811 I am getting more families but not sure about anything My father told me once that the Name Fetherston spelt this way is a relative and I have seen a few Fetherston signatures that the writing is all the same and my dad figures the name was fetherstonhaugh to start with I sometimes feel it could have been with the dead end beginning Talk to you soon Nancy

Like you I also have some information about the children, although it is not to hand at the monent as I am at work, but will willingly share it with you. I also have a transcription of Mary Bolster's will which shed's a little more light on things. Wasn't Samuel the brother who was also in the tobacconist business with Charles?

Do you have any information before they emigrated to Glasgow?
The time frame I have is for Thomas McGuire which would be 1830-1840. His mother was the Fetherston. On all the records I have on him, each birthdate is differant by years. I haven't come across any records yet from Ireland, so it has been extremely difficult to go anywhere with this. It was noted in a letter that when Thomas was young he had an older brother that went to war in Ireland and never returned. The only war that I know of around that time was the Tithe war.
The Fetherstons have an interesting history--they tended to have a foot in every camp--that is they were Catholic and Protestant (or Church of England). MY Fetherstons were Catholic (at least so far in my immediate past and direct ancestry)--they were from Cos. Roscommon, Westmeath and Longford. what time frame are you looking at? I haven't come across any McGuires--but who knows? Other surnames that I know to be connected to my Fetherston line are: Hyland, Mannion
Marie

I have a census from his son that states his father Thomas was from Meath. I don't have anything as far as towns in Ireland. I did find out this past weekend that his name was probably John Thomas. The story goes that Thomas McGuires' mother was disowned for marrying a Catholic. It would seem that there would be some kind of information out there somewhere about a daughter who was disowned from the Fetherston branch. From the way it's looking, they really meant it!

Do you know where in Ireland your Fetherston ancestor was from? Fetherston is not an overly common surname in Ireland and I suspect all Fetherstons in Ireland connect. Fetherston is one of my primary lines that I am researching. Unfortunately, I don't have as much information as I would like.

I'm trying to trace my gggrandfather Thomas McGuire and have run into "the" brick wall. I have a letter stating his mother was a Fetherston and she was disowned for marrying a Catholic. The only other thing I have from a census says he was from Meath born abt 1830's. Of course I have no name for his mother. He (maybe others in family) came to the USA (not sure when yet). The letter also states he had an older brother (no name). He was a laborer and died in Missouri about 1887. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

YOu should also note that their death dates in some of the websites I have found, (questionable) indicate they died before hugh was born. I'm assuming the names are more credible than the dates because they came from primary documents.

Yes my Darby settled in Thamesville Zone Co. Ontario Canada. His farm is situated where the famous Iroqois chief Techumsah died and was buried. He had 12 children 11 of whom lived to adulthood and married a woman who may have been Quaker. His brother Hugh and sister did as well.

Did Darby go to the Thamesville, Ontario area? If so, we share the same ancestor. If not, either way, I found a Darby Fetherston in a land survey of Ireland taken between 1848 and 1858. Click here: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/lrgrif.html and use the name "Fetherston" as you indicated, under the county of Roscommon. I do not see Hugh, but I do see a Bernard (Barney) only 30km away from Darby. Good luck! If we share the same Darby, where did you find his parents' names?

It's amazing how many of the same names are used by Fetherstons in Ireland. Cuthbert, William, Thomas, John, etc. I think that points to connections that aren't easy to spot, but my family was located in Kilfinane, Limerick, IRE and Mitchelstown, Cork, IRE about as early as I can track.
I have pretty much hit a brick wall with both William and Margaret GRAHAM Fetherston m. 1811 in Cork and Ross diocese. I would love to help connect prior to that, but don't see it being done easily, perhaps with some research in Ireland some day.
There were several families in Westmeath, including some very prominent ones, perhaps that will help you there. I will try to help you some if I can get the time.

The sketch I have is of a family tree done by either my aunt, Thelma Maguire, or by my grandmother, Margaret Maguire. Sorry, I am not sure which. Margaret married Richard Featherston the first in 1929. He was the son of Richard Felix Maguire and Mary Louisita Fetherston. Richard Featherston Maguire had only one sibling, Grace, who died at age 12. Richard Felix Maguire seems to have had a sister, Sadie, whom I know nothing about. It also appears that the Maguire family patriarch was Patrick Maguire of Maguire's Bridge, County Fermanagh, Ireland.

Emily had 8 children, Constance was the eldest daughter, their fourth child.

I have a lot more information on the family if you are interested, including some newspaper clippings and army service records relating to Constance's siblings and father. Unfortunately I don't have a confirmed photo of anyone from Richard and Emily's family.

What information do you have? Did Constance and George Steed have children?
FETHERSTON: WILLIAM, LETITIA, AND (?) JAMES

My great great grandfather was William Fetherston born in Muff, Co. Roscommon, 1838 and died 1926. He had a sister Letitia born 1840 and died 1922 (married name Mannion). I believe they may have had a brother James--James Fetherston was my great grandfather's godfather. I am trying to learn more about this family--any information appreciated.
