Ficklin or Fickling - African American, Crawford County, Georgia

I am in search of information on descendants of E Ficklin (1817) of Crawford County, Georgia and her children.
Harry(1846)
Joseph(1849)
Jerry(1852)

Joseph/Joe and wife Martha(1848) had one daughter, Mary Jane(1876) and two sons, John(1880) and Jefferson(1883).

Mary Jane later married Van Colbert(1866) of Crawford County, Georgia.

Of that union there were several children, including my grandmother Lila Mae, Jonas, Thomas James, Etta Clyde, Beulah and Irene.

I would love to know of any other information available about the Ficklin or Fickling(if related) lineage.

Can replicate your findings via US Federal Censuses of
1850, 1860 and 1880. There were at least two(2) Jacob
Ficklings. One moved North to Illinois and the other upon
gaining his freedom, well before the Civil War, relocated to
St. Johns Island, SC with his wife and children.

The names in the Barnwell County Ficklings Master list
reveals the 'recycling effect'. The port-of-entry for the
Fickling's was Edisto, SC. There remains Ficklings in the
adjacent Counties and the Lowcountry, today.

Hello, my name is Katrina and I am the niece of Colette Ficklin. She is no longer an active user, but is very interested in this information after discovering that her g grandfather was born in SC. She would like to communicate via email (cococf2003@aim.com). Just curious, are you African-American?

Katrina

Hi Don! We've talked often, just not for a long time. Charles was my great-grandfather. I'm Buford's granddaughter in Illinois. I think I have most of your family sheets and they are a great help. I've just been going back through everyone trying to gather as much documentation as possible and can't seem to find one single person from George W's family in the 1880 census. Frustrating! I'll give it a couple of more days and then convince myself they just didn't get counted.

I'm having a great time getting back into my research and finally getting everything nicely organized. I was sad to see that the Ficklin-Ficklen-Fickling website seems to have falled by the wayside :(

Lets catch up more soon. P.S. New branch to the family tree, I had a little boy last year and his middle name is Emery!

Re: G.W. Ficklin...Again

I have quite a bit of information about George Washington Ficklin and his wife Ann Elizabeth (Miller). From Illinois, they moved to Missouri, first to Vernon County and then to Bates County, where they lived out their lives.

George was born 20 March 1839 in Mt Sterling, KY, and died 6 March 1912 in Bates County. Elizabeth was born 4 January 1842 in Montgomery County, KY, and died 29 November 1913. George and Elizabeth are buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Bates Co MO.

They had eight children:

William Henry "Tip" Ficklin was born 27 May 1863 in Montgomery County KY, and died 19 February 1940 in Hume, Bates County, MO.

Charlotte Ficklin New was born 1 November 1866 in Sangamon County, IL, and died 16 April 1961 in Mound City, KS.

Bettie Ficklin was born 6 January 1871 and died 13 December 1888 in Bates County, MO. She is buried in Elizabeth Chapel rural cemetery.

Bennie Ficklin was born 6 November 1872 and died 13 August 1873.

Fannie Ficklin Gutshall was born 28 May 1874 in Bates County, MO, and died 21 May 1939. She is buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Bates Co MO.

George Washington "Bud" Ficklin Jr. was born 29 April 1876 (probably in Bates County, MO) and died in 1952.

Lula Margaret Ficklin Allen was born 29 March 1878 in Bates County, MO, and died 22 December 1955 in Hutchinson, KS.

Charles E. Ficklin was born 3 March 1882 in Nevada, Vernon County, MO, and died 16 September 1943 in Archie, Bates County, MO. He is buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Bates Co MO.

---------

Charles is my grandfather. I grew up in Adrian, Bates County, MO, and I have a lot of documents and cemetery photos, as well as information about George W and Elizabeth's descendants that is too voluminous to include here. (A GEDCOM file would probably be the best way to give you a lot of the information). I can email photos and copies of documents.

That's all for now.

Don (Donald Lee) Ficklin

G.W. Ficklin...Again

I am finally getting back to my genealogy work after a very long break of about...5 years :( A couple of moves and adding a new branch to the family tree kept me away much too long!

Hopefully there are still some of you out here keeping up the research. In returning I've found myself a little stuck and confused on our George W. Ficklin. I have his death certificate and then began tracking him through census records. I feel confident in his birth date of 1839. However he and his entire family seem to disappear in 1880. Its driving me a little crazy and I can't rest until I've tried every avenue and this is my last stop. I have them in 1870 census in Illinois. George W. age 31, Elizabeth age 26, William H. age 7, and Charlotte age 4. Also from the 1900 census I can verify they had another daughter, Fannie in 1874, a song George W. in 1876 and daughter Lula in 1878. All would have been in the 1880 census.

I may have to eventually accept that they just didn't get recorded but I thought I'd give one last shot and check here!

Thanks for any help.
Amanda Ficklin-Dagostino

Rather new to this, have traced Fickling's from Beaufort County, SC (1800's) to Barnwell County to the Charleston area; A well travelled pathway including Denmark, Bamberg, Edisto Island, Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston. Jacob (Sr. and Jr.), Levinnia (Mother & Daugther), Julia, Robert (Sr. & Jr.), Christopher, etc.. Maybe ? Maybe not ! Let's chat, the probability is higher than you might think based on the History of the Surname.

I think either Leepson's or Urofsky's books on the Levy ownership of Monticello mention a story about Sr dieing at Monticello in Jefferson's bed. [by memory I would have to re read in which case he would have had to have died before March/April 1865 but his will is recorded in Alb. several years later]. Joel Wheeler, the farm manager's wife was Martha Hobday. Patsy is sometimes a nickname for Martha. So there is a vague possibility that she is the Patsy Wheeler mentioned in Sr's will. Wheeler was there from 1860-1878.

Ill check it out.

I was pretty sure Sr. passed away in D.C. and then was brought back to charlottesville to be buried back at home. But again, I will see if I can find out.

Our family jokes to this day that if the South had not lost, we couldve been living in Monticello. Although from what I hear, at that time, it was more or less in shambles from vandalism and old age.

Benjamin Ficklin Sr. and Jr.'s wills were recorded in Albemarle about the same time (by memory). It could be Sr's will was recorded after Jr's in order to clear up both estates but Sr may have died years previous to his will being recorded. As I said Sr.'s will mentions a neice Patsy Wheeler. Maybe it is just a coincidence that Joel Wheeler was the farm manager there at the same time period or there is some connection. So see if you have the death date of Sr. There apparently is a story that Sr. died at Monticello but his will wasn't recorded until years after the house was returned to the Levy's.

Whether the house was paid for in confederate money or not any seizures by confederate government were overturned after the war.

If I remember right, Benjamin Ficklin was the one that bought monticello with confederate money and then after the war, it was taken back by the US govt due to the US govt not recognizing confederate money. I will see what I can find out about Wheeler.

Benjamin Ficklin Sr. whose son bought Monticello during the civil war has a will recorded in albemarle. It states he wants to be buried at Monticello his son's house and mentions a neice, Patsy Wheeler. What I'm trying to figure out I don't see a marraige of a Ficklin and Wheeler in Albemarle. Is it known who Patsy Wheeler was. Was ---- Wheeler her husband related to Joel N. Wheeler who was the farm manager for Uriah Levy who owned the house before the Confederate government seized it during the civil war.

I am trying to
compile information on the Ficklin side of
the family. I would like to compare information
with you. I am sure we each have info that
the other does not have. Drop me a e-mail
when you get a chance.
Andrew Louis Ficklin

I don't know if he understood the > question. One question was What real and personal property do you now > own, and what is the present value of such property? Answer.. Two Cows > and Two calves Value $50.00. What is your physical condition? Fubel, Old > age and general dibility. (I think he spelled it the best he could). > This was dated 26th day of June 1899. This was approved 12th day of > Oct. 1899. > Witnesses stated they personally knew him were... L.B. McMurtry and A.H. > Parmer ... It sure is hard to make out the correct spelling of their > names. His Doctor that checked him over was Dr. S.T. Coffield.
That would be amazing. I live in Northwestern IL and between classes and work it would be extremely difficult for me to make the trip. However if there are any pictures taken I would love to see them. I am hoping to make the trip down there in the near future to do some hands on research and see the family farmhouse which is supposedly still standing just outside of Adrian. I know I have many holes to still fill and will contact you with questions in hopes you might be able to fill in some blanks. Thank you again for responding!!!

He married around 1705 a woman named Charity and died sometime May 25, 1776 in South Carolina. Have you come across this man in your English research? I have other information on his American descendents in South Carolina and later in Alabama if you'd like. Thanks.

Wayne Dean

Am looking of any information related to a Mattie J, Ficklin. Family history would indicate she came from Mississippi or Alabama. The 1880 Mississippi
census showed her in Sunflower County, MS., Married to Henry Myers. They had six children at the time; Wiley P., Henry W., Emma F., Annie B, Roddy(Rodney?), and Marshall. Fannie Bettie would be another child born later.

In the late 1800s they moved to Texas losing an infant son on the way. They settled in Montgomery Co., Texas near where "the infant son died in a wagon accident".

Becase family records continually list her as "Mattie J. Ficklin Myers" There is a possibility of there having been a prior mariage to a prior "Myers". Any help with any information related to this "Ficklin" or "Fickling"(?) ancestry will be appreciated!

I can be contacted directly at raychancellor@aol.com
I am trying to find a link for my great grandmother, Mattie Jane Ficklin (Possibly Martha or Elizabeth), who was married to Henry Myers. They came to Texas by wagon with 6 children in the 1880s with from Scott County Mississippi although there are some references to them, at least Henry, being born in Alabama.

Henry fought in the Civil war (Co. B, Captain McLaurins Company, 6th Misissippi Infantry). There were 3 Henry Myers in that Company!

In the application for Confederate Widows Pension filed in Texas (#323357) Mrs. M.J. Myers was the name used. Witnesses to the application include Frank Ficklin who says he grew up with Henry Myers. (Possibly neighbors?) Frank's home at the time of the affidavit was September 1915 in Valley Mills Texas.

Another witness was Bernett Myers (spelling is difficult to read and may be "Bennette") who listed Moulton Mississippi, Clark County as her residence. (Sept., 1915) A sister or relative of Henry?

Mattie Jane died 12 Oct 1923 in the home of her son Marshall Ficklin Myers, Willis, Texas.

Any information on this family will be GREATLY appreciated. I have the complete descendancy from that point and will be most happy to share.

I too had a Ficklin relative die in the hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900. HIs name was William Ficklin and I have his ancestry. Possibly they are closely related as we know most Ficklin's in the US are related.

I just discovered this web-site and am also an African American Ficklin. My grandparents were Samuel and Ada Ficklin from Arkansas. I'd love to gather information on possible distant relatives. Pictures would be fantastic. Please respond.

Osa Ficklin is my first cousin two times removed. I would really like information on his grandfather Thomas Anthony Ficklin in particular about his siblings. As of now I only have one suspected sister, Matilda born ca 1826 and who married William H. Edmonston in Callaway Co. Missouri on 17 Dec. 1846. Based on the 1830 census for Callaway, Ann Ficklin (TAF's mother) head of household shows with 1 boy aged 0-5, 1 boy aged 5-10 this should be Thomas Anthony, 2 girls aged 0-5, 1 girl aged 5-10 and 1 girl aged 10-15. Ann is shown as aged between 30 and 40.
