Hello John. I was born June Fickling in Wymondham in 1945. There are still alot of Ficklings living in Wymondham. One of our ancestors a Ben Ficklin Came to America and founded the pony express. There is a town in Texas call Ben Ficklin named after him. I married an American serviceman and now live in New Mexico. A Tom Ficling from London has researched our family. WE all originate from a flemish Lord who was given land in England in the 11th century.

Re: Jacob Fickling

I need to correct one thing from my previous post. Jacob Fickling, of Illinois, married Susannah "Susan" Draper, the shoemaker's SISTER (not daughter). The shoemaker Jacob obtained work from in Danville, Illinois, was John Fickling. John and Susannah were children of James Draper and Mary Peden.
************************
For the benefit of others researching this line, I will quote information here from Jacob's autobiography:

From the History of Jacob Fickling (An Autobiography by Jacob Fickling, July 30, 1901)

Jacob read the book, Buckingham's Travels in 1844, in which that author talked about visiting the States. Jacob says, "He touched particularly on the opportunities afforded to young men in the new world, and encouraged those of an ambitious spirit to try their fortune in America. This book was of deep interest to me, and when I had done with it I was convinced that my proper course lay in getting to the states...never until I read Buckingham's travels did it so completely take posession of me. I made arrangement to sail in the spring...I engaged passage on a sailing vessel bound from London docks for Quebec. It was my design to land on British soil and later, if I thought best, to remove to the states...Prior to my embarkation for America, James Fickling a cousin, had written for me a letter of introduction and recommendation to a shoemaker at Quebec...Wright was the man's name, and immediately upon landing I found my way to his home, presented the letter, and obtained the promise of employment. He invited me to stop at his house. One week before my arrival fifteen hundred homes had burned in Quebec, and on the night of my landing all that remained of upper Quebec was swept away by flames. Mr. Wright's establishment included...As a result of the fire Mr. Wright was unable to fulfill his promise to give me work, and the general condition in the city were such that I concluded to sail for some point further up the St. Lawrence river...I worked at my trade with an old Englishman in Toronto for about fourteen weeks and then embarked for Niagara...I got employment near the falls, but was unable to hold my position through loss of sleep occasioned by the roar of the cataract. From Niagara I went to Buffalo, NY, and thence took passage for Chicago, Ills. There were about five hundred passengers aboard the vessel...in the early morning of the second day, we had just left the lake (Erie) to enter the Detroit river when the ship struck a snag and began sinking rapidly...the upper deck remained above water. There we were, five hundred of us...until boats from the city of Detroit could be summoned to our relief...the next morning the Captain refunded the balance of my passage money. Instead of pressing on to Chicago...I took the back track to Toledo, O., and thence by canal to Lafayette, Ind. There I remained until spring and found all the work at my trade I could perform...Late in the winter I met a man then on his way to Texas, he was a shoemaker and formerly in the employ of one John Draper of Danville, Illinois. He informed me that Mr. Draper was in need of an assistant...Leaving my heavy luggage at Lafayette, I traveled the distance on foot, following the Wabash river to Perrysville, and from there across country to Danville. The next morning I presented myself to Mr. Draper, obtained the position and went to work without delay."

He continues, "At this time I was thirty five years old and had grown tired of single life. During the winter at Lafayette I had decided to marry as soon as I could conveniently. Mr. Draper had a sister, Susan by name, whom I met shortly after going into her brother's service. I remember in particular of seeing her at a maple sugar party. She was bright, quick and did more work that day than any other young woman in the gathering. I thought she would make a good wife for a poor man. Suffice it to say that after a little time the matter was satisfactorily settled between us, and I made a journey back to Lafayette for my good clothes. We were married April 9th, 1846, at Danville, Illinois. There we resided for over a year after our union. There, too, our oldest child, William Henry was born."

Jacob borrowed money in 1848 to purchase 160 acres (a "pioneer offer") and bought land 1-1/2 miles north of Trivoli (Peoria Co), Illinois on the Peoria-Burlington wagon road. He lived on this farm for 19 years (until about 1867). He says, "I first put up a small house, twenty-four feet long and sixteen feet wide, containing but two rooms, a bedroom and living room. The sod had to be broken and a large part of the farm had to be grubbed of trees, bushes, roots and what not. One who has had no experience cannot estimate the amount of time and constant untiring labor necessary to redeem barren, uncultivated soil from its native state. On this farm we resided for nineteen years, and here all our ten children, but the first son, were born..."

He revisited England in 1865. He was gone for six months. He returned to the USA in April of 1866. While there he examined the Methodist church register in Thetford, England and found no record of his birth. He judged the record began years after he was born.

He bought a new farm in Henry Co, Illinois from John Millage c1867, which included a house. He sold the farm in Trivoli about one year later. His new farm was five miles from Cambridge (Henry Co), Illinois. In 1876 he built a ten-room house on that land. He says of the land, "A part of the land lay on what is know as 'the bottom' and at the time I bought it, was liable to overflow by the heavy spring rains. This low section I drained by means of ditches...In the earlier days 'the bottom' was a favorite haunt of wild game, ducks, geese, prairie chickens, etc. This gave me an opportunity to indulge my fondness for hunting...of late years since the land has been drained, wild fowl have almost wholly disappeared." His son, William Henry the first, refers to these geese and fowl in his letter from his Civil War camp dated. January 19, 1864.
Jacob Fickling remained on the farm for 25 years (until about 1892). He sold his farm in 1892 to his son, William Henry II, and bought forty acres and a home from his son, Edward (who eventually ended up in Yankton, South Dakota). Jacob then lived there with his wife and his daughter, Rebecca.

He also mentions that, "During the slavery agitation I was an abolitionist and supported the Republican party, I remember attending one of the Lincoln Douglas debates at Peoria, Ill. When Grant's administration attempted to take back pay, I withdrew from the ranks of the Republicans and joined the Democratic party with which I have been identified since. However, I hold men above party and have at all times endeavored to cast my vote in favor of the best man for the office regardless of political prejudices. My name is inscribed on no church roll, but in all my dealings with men I have tried to use fairness and justice. My religion is contained in the old rule of living prescribed by the Nazarene: As ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them."

Jacob finishes his story with two stories of his youth in England, "I went to London to live before King William was crowned and was yet a resident there June 20, 1847, when Victoria was crowned Queen. I can distinctly remember the night on which the House of Parliament burned, as I was caught in the crowd and could not get away until almost midnight. The fire caught about 6 p.m., and the alarm was given just as I was going to supper." (Note: The House of Parliament burned in 1834.) He also tells, "When I was seven or eight years of age I suffered a severe attack of typhoid fever. In those days only cold water was allowed a fever patient. One day my mother was called away to visit a very sick relative and left my small sister to care for me. I was very anxious to have some beer to drink so I sent my sister to three different homes and each time she returned with a quart bottle full. I drank it all. When my mother returned and learned what I had done, she thought I would not recover, but owing to a good mother's nursing I was restored to health."

Re: Jacob Fickling

My husband is a descendant of this Jacob Fickling, who owned a farm in Cambridge Township, Henry Co, Illinois.

He was born on 6 Feb 1812 in Hockwold cum Wilton, Norfolk, England. His father was Nathan Fickling (1780-1840). His mother was Mary Stead (1738-1851)

Jacob was a shoemaker who went to London, England to look for work, but he could not find much there. He was told there might be a job for him in Quebec, Canada, so he sailed there and landed in June of 1845; but, he left Quebec soon after due to their great city fire (and the destruction of the shoemaker's shop).

He headed on a boat for Chicago, Illinois, but when that boat sank in the River St. Clair on its way to Lake Huron, he headed instead for Detroit, Michigan, and then on to Lafayette, Indiana.

In 1846 he heard there was a shoemaker's job in Danville, Illinois so he walked from Layfayette to Danville to see if he could be hired there. He was, and he later married the shoemaker's daughter, Susannah Draper.

In 1848 Jacob and Susannah moved to a farm on Farmington Road, 1 and 1/2 miles north of Trivoli, Peoria Co, Illinois. They remained there until 1867, when they moved to the farm in Cambridge Township, Henry Co, Illinois. My husband's mother grew up on that farm.

Much of the information I have listed, above, is from Jacob's short autobiography, which was given to family members. I have a copy of that, and can scan it in if needed.

For an interesting online biography of Jacob Fickling, visit this website:

http://www.illinoisancestors.org/henry/jacobficklingbio.htm

She then moved at roughly age 16 to Brooklyn NYC with her mother and sister. much more precise detail is avaliable should this be the katie you are looking for.
thanks john fickling.

Well my great great great grandfater thomsas was born in wymondham norfolk england in 1767. this is a very old obscure country town. see the town's web site. the ancestors of the brothers of his son in my direct line have traced back the ficklings in wymondham to 1100 ad. this is all on ancestry.com. some of his descendants starting with his grandson's wife moved to nyc in the late 1800's. I know all about the descendants of 1767 robert's 1844 grandson and a lot about the descendants of his 1806 son in my line. I have had extensive dialog with the ancestor of another son of the 1767 robert. I live in the nyc area. my line is in london, nyc, and some of my children are in melbourne. i have great grandchildren in the nyc area too.
In the long ago past in business I meet some of the georgia and south carolina ficklings when i worked for first national city bank. they were not interested in discussing "fickling" with me once they learned that my ancestors only came over in the late 1800s and i had no relatives that fought for the confederacy! you are probably one of these? It would appear that: a person arrived in south carolina named george fickling. he had lived in bermuda. before that it was claimed that he was born in norfolk around 1680. judging by the physical stature and the sort of work you southern ficklings do that george was indeed a blood fickling rather than having invented the name to create a false past. i was asked by one of my relatives about finding his baptism certificate as i had learned all about the priest's corruptions of "fickling" from doing my own research of the UK baptism records limited of course to the wymondham area. It would appear that in ALL of england only two george ficklings were baptised between 1800 and 1810. it is unlikely that either one was the george that went to bermuda. still this info is avaliabe to you should you want it! It would also appear that the george fickling line does not tie into the direct ancestors ( all of whom lived in wymondham back to 1100 ad. ) of 1767 thomas fickling. of course brothers of my direct ancestors left wymondham for other parts of england so there could be a cousin relationship.

john fickling.

George was married two times after my great-grandmother who was Rachel Arnold Whaley: Catherine Lee and Carrie Siegler.
The following is based both on the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses plus information developed by Nell Samuel McCoy in the late 1930s. Lennie's mother was Julia Wade and her father was Stephen R. Fickling Sr., born in Georgia. Julia, the daughter of Archibal (Archie) Wade and Melissa (1850 Census seems to shows Malipa) Thompson, was born on 1 or 2 March 1848 in Alabama. Archie was the second husband of Melissa, the first being a Dr. William Johnson. A daughter of this first marriage, Ann Johnson, was the mother of the Samuel involved in the Ficklin and Samuels Hardware store. As noted separately to you, both Stephen Sr. and Stephen Jr., as well as Julia, were postmasters in Pontotoc, Texas.

"Looking for FICKLINGs born in London between 1830 and 1860 (particularly St Pancras, Marylebone or Kensington"

Hello,
I have posted a GEDCOM for descendants of William Fickling and Sarah Saunders who married in Southwark in 1803 and had loads of kids [Sarah, Susan, Mary, Alfred, James, William, etc.] christened mainly in the parish of St Botolphs-without-Bishopsgate. Many of their offspring were married or had kids christened in other London parishes so I expect that following the trail down from William and Sarah will be useful. I am trying to link William back to his birthplace and family in Norfolk (Swaffham I believe). There is also a famous family of Fickling Dentists who were also London based in the mid 19th century I believe?
Hello, I am interested in anything you might glean on William Fickling born c. 1881 in [Swaffham?] Norfolk. Wymondham and Swaffham are not too far apart so you might come across something to do with William Fickling or some relative of his. He later married Sarah Saunders in Southwark in 1803. They both died in 1851.

Can anyone assist with the above people please. They are my great aunt and great uncle, being the brother and sister of my grandad Benjamin Fickling. They appear on the 1901 Census in Skelton, Yorkshire, England. I have been unable to find anything further on them since that time. I understand that William served in the forces and may have been killed during the Second World War. My father remembers him being buried at South Kirby in South Yorkshire but cannot remember the year. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated please.

Christine

Hi, my name is Angela Overend,I live in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England.

I am trying to trace an old friend who returned to New Zealand about 3 - 4 years ago.
Her name on her return was Paula Fickling, she has a lovely little girl called Lydia and a dog called Pip. She was last known to work as a Practice Manager for a local Veterinary Surgeon somewhere around Hastings, New Zealand.
I know her as I used to work with her at our local Veterinary Surgeons in Horbury, West Yorkshire, England. She was also my hair dresser and a good one at that!
We lost touch a couple of years ago and I would dearly like to know how she and Lydia are getting on and to fill her in with all the gossip she has missed!!!
If you are reading this Paula please contact me on my e-mail address; angela@cleckheaton37.freeserve.co.uk or my mobile no. 07796 112105.
I look forward to any info regarding above.
Thankyou
Angela Overend

I'm trying to find my mother's family for her - she'l almost 97 and has forgotten a lot. Her father was originally from Alabama and lived in Mississippi. He was Leonard T. Fickling. I can't find Ficklings in Alabama. Here's what Mother remembers. Thomas Fickling, had lots of kids, a son named Novalee. Henry Fickling, had a daughter called Freddie. Ellen Fickling, married Julian Bryers who was blind, daughter Nora. Do you have any information on this branch of the family? Send a message to me at myrtislorene@hotmail.com. Thanks. I'm also researching the Saucier, Crowson, and Cuevas families if you need info on any of those.
