Additional information on Leander Fielding The Massachusetts Town vital collection shows a marriage between Leander Fielding and Annie Pettpas in Boston Mass May 3 1881. I believe this to be my Grandmothers name not Petipaw. Of course the handwritting seems clear on the Boston Record but not so much on Leander (Lee) Fielding Death report from Vermont. You be the judge? I hope this helps. Leander was the son of Enoch Fielding & Margaret Isabel Crawford from a source that I haven't been able to confirm. Thanks Joe Higgins

Margaret Fielding - Cork, Ohio, CT

I've been looking to find the maiden name of my great-grandmother Elizabeth who was married to William Fielding in CorkIreland; both appear on the 1901 Irish Census and had a daughter Margaret.

Elizabeth and Margaret came to the US and show up in the 1920 census living in Waterbury, CT with Elizabeth's son Joseph.

Moving forward to 1930, Margaret is no where to be found on the Census - Connecticut or otherwise.

However, there is a record of a Margaret Fielding getting married in Butler County Ohio to a John Harris; on the marriage license, Margaret Fielding listed her place of birth as Cork Ireland and parents as William and Elizabeth and shows her mother's maiden name as McNally.

So its possible she moved from Connecticut to Ohio between 1920 and 1923 and got married.

My problem comes in when I circle back to the 1901 Irish Census because there is another William Fielding listed (no wife) living with his daughter also named Margaret who is about the same age as "my" Margaret.

So at this point the 1901 Irish Census narrows down 2 father/daughter combinations of William/Margaret and the Ohio marriage record is a match for both of my Margret's parents names but still, I don't want to make a false connection if its not really there.

What do people look for when making "leaps of faith" like this? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Henry and Callia Fielding

Looking for more information on Henry and Callia Fielding. Henry was my great grandfather and Callia was his first wife. They had a child, Olie Fielding around 1894 and later had Ruby and Cecil Fielding (in 1903 and 1911) in McLennon County, Tx.

I'm trying to figure out Callia's surname...Also, I've hit a brick wall on Henry as he was adopted by George and Maggie Fielding. His original name was Henry Hale. His family was from Tennessee and family discussion has told me that Henry's parents were killed by native american indians. Apparently the kids were placed in an orphanage in Georgia that later burned down. Henry was adopted by the Fieldings.

FIELDING of Rochdale, Lancashire and San Francisco, California

Many years ago I inherited a family tree which linked to a known branch of my tree. I'm only now getting around to trying to verify the information (which didn't have any sources) and have some loose ends.

Robert FIELDING of Rochdale, born circa 1796, and his wife Jane TAYLOR, born circa 1794 at Rochdale, married at Rochdale on 30 October 1815. Their son Abraham was christened at St Mary's, Wardleworth in Rochdale on 18 August 1822. In 1843 he married Mary WHITEHEAD (marriage registered in Rochdale District), possibly at Milnrow, and they had two known children: Emma (b. 15 May 1843) and Ellen (b. 6 October 1845). I *think* I've found Mary and the girls living in Surrey in 1851. The girls are certainly back in Rochdale in 1861, living at No. 166 Bury Road, Spotland, with their grandparents. I haven't located their parents in 1861.

Earlier along Bury Road, at Nos. 33 & 35, lived James and Martha SHARROCKS, along with their son Alfred (born 1837 in Rochdale, birth registered December Quarter). James and Martha were both aged 45 on this census and James was a Town Councillor and Cotton Manufacturer. Alfred was a Manager in a Cotton Factory.

On 16 September 1863, Alfred SHARROCKS married Ellen FIELDING at St Chad's, Rochdale. He was aged 25 and she was aged 18. Her father's name was given Abraham FIELDING and his as James SHARROCKS.

According to the family tree I received, Alfred SHARROCKS and Ellen FIELDING had the following children:
1) daughter, born 1863 (no details given; I cannot find any evidence, but perhaps the child was illegitimate and registered under FIELDING)

2) Emma, apparently born 28 Dec 1864 in Rochdale. An Emma SHARROCKS, daughter of Alfred and Ellen, was *baptised* at St Chad's, Rochdale, on this date, and she died in San Francisco on 1 March 1868, aged 3 years, 3 months and 4 days (by subtraction, born on or about 26 November 1864).

3) Ellen, born Sep 1865 in Rochdale and died there Dec 1866. The birth of an Ellen SHARROCKS was registered in September Quarter in Chorley District, Lancashire, and her death, aged one, in December 1866, also in Chorley District, and this might be the same child.

4) Edna, born and died June 1866 at Underwood, Spotland, Rochdale. I can't find any registrations supporting Edna's birth and death here or in Chorley (where Ellen, above, possibly was born in September Quarter 1865 and died in December Quarter 1866, which covers the period in which Edna supposedly was born and died).

5) Charles Fielding, born 31 August 1869 in Eureka, California. There is plenty of evidence for Charles' birth and death -- 25 February 1954. Charles married twice, firstly to Agnes FLINT, with whom he had one daughter, Gertrude Ellen (21 Jan 1907-16 Dec 1996), who married a Mr BAKER. Charles' second marriage was to Emma ALEXANDER, née GILLESPIE (marriage licence dated 13 April 1913), no issue.

6) Alfred Meanock (or Manic), born 11 Apr 1872 in Eureka, California, died 25 Dec 1919 at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. As with his brother Charles, there is a lot of documentary evidence about Alfred and his family. He became a medical mission worker on behalf of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the United States in Korea, where his four children (Ella Janet, Marian Ames, Theodora and Horace Fielding) were born. On his 28 June 1899 passport application he refers to his father in the present tense; on his 2 December 1909 application he says that his father is deceased.

According to the family tree, Alfred SHARROCKS and Ellen FIELDING were divorced in 1872. This was the same year their youngest child was born and it is the last known event I have in the life of Alfred SHARROCKS, other than the detail that he appears to have died between 28 June 1899 and 2 December 1909, according to the information on his son's passport applications. Where did he go? He, Ellen and Charles were living in Eureka, California in 1870, but he doesn't appear to be in the US in 1880. Did he return to England? Move elsewhere?

Ellen FIELDING remarried sometime before 1880 to James DANIEL. James was born circa 1847 in New York State, possibly in Albany, son of John DANIEL and Mary BROWN. He was a marble cutter, as was his older brother John, who had been born in 1834 in Upper Canada. John had also moved from New York to California, where he'd married at San Francisco to Emma FIELDING on 17 October 1865. Emma was Ellen's older sister, so once Ellen FIELDING SHARROCKS had married James DANIEL, there were two sisters married to two brothers. The family of John DANIEL and Emma FIELDING can be traced to the present day, but James DANIEL and Ellen FIELDING vanish after 1880.

On the 1880 census, James DANIEL, Ellen FIELDING, and their sons (stepsons) Charles and Alfred SHARROCKS were living in San Francisco. The family tree I received says that James and Ellen had one daughter, Una Ellen, born 17 July 1884 in San Francisco. Una can be traced and her birthdate verified. She died, unmarried, aged 91 in Sonoma County, California, on 17 October 1975, and she worked as a nurse. She also appears as the informant on the death certificate of Emma Gillespie SHARROCKS, her sister-in-law, in San Francisco in 1949. On the 1900 census, the earliest surviving census on which Una appears, she is boarding on Lincoln Avenue, Alameda, with the family of John and Sophia ELDER, and is attending school. There is no sign of her parents.

What happened to James DANIEL and Ellen FIELDING after 1880? Like Alfred SHARROCKS, they seem to disappear.

The other sibling, Emma FIELDING, as I said above, married John DANIEL. They can be found on the 1870 US Census living in San Francisco with their first two children, Mary and Laura, and also with Emma's father, Abraham FIELDING, aged 48, a Steamboat Engineer. That is the last record I have for Abraham.

According to the family tree I received, Emma FIELDING died at San Anselmo, California, on 18 January 1932, predeceased by her husband John DANIEL, who died at San Francisco on 3 June 1895. Their children were:
1) Mary W., born Sep 1867 at San Francisco, and died there 7 Jan 1922.
Robert and George Fielding from Blackburn, Lancashire

I am trying to track down the ancestry of my Aunt Elizabeth Ann Fielding, who married Oliver King in 1930 in Wellsboro, WV. "Aunt Lizzie" (as we called her) was born possibly in November 1905, and although one census says in PA (Allegheny Co.), I'm more inclined to believe Blackburn, Lancashire (she put England on her marriage license). There is some confusion about the timing of the family's immigration, however.

The first name I have is Robert Fielding, b. abt. 1860, came to the U.S. in 1902 from Blackburn, Lancs, and settled in Coraopolis, PA. His wife's name was Elizabeth A. They had a son Richard L., b. abt. 1891 in England, and a son George, b. abt. 1886 in England. George and his wife Annie joined their father Robert in Coraopolis, PA, later in 1902. George and Annie Fielding (she was b. abt. 1880) had two children, Richard L., b. abt. 1904/5 in PA, and Elizabeth Ann (Aunt Lizzie), b. 1905, in England apparently. (Additional children Annie and Georgine were born later in PA and appear in the 1930 census.)

Some of the family may have returned to Blackburn, as there is another record of the family coming to Philadelphia (destined for Coraopolis, PA) in 1907. There is a notation of the nearest relative in England, but it is hard to read. It might say James Hen??? living at 12 Cottonhall St. in Blackburn (but I can't really read it clearly).

Anyone recognize this family? I have a little more info on them if anyone is interested.

Thanks, Bill King.

Re: Fieldings in Ga

My grandfather was a Clyde Fielding born in Oconee County, GA and died in Greene County. I never knew him. He died when my mother was a toddler. He was married to Annie Dennis who was his second wife. They had three children Sam, Ethel, and Mae. I beleive that he had three children by his first wife. I don't know her name but those three children are James, Robert, and a girl unsure of her name. I was able to get a lot of information about him because my mother was able to obtain his death certificiate. He was born 6/15/1884 and died 6/14/1937. Most of his family live in and around Madison, GA I believe.

Linda Spivey,
I am also researching Sterling Brewer for my family's tree. The information that you have is correct- not sure about his father and grandfather- haven't gotten that far in my research. Sterling B Fielding settled in GA and that is where my family remains that was associated with him in history. I am looking into his civil war records to gain more information on him. Sterling B Fielding is my husband's great great grandfather. I am also looking for his grave if you have any suggestions.
Thanks,
Angie

I am at the wall - was told by family his father was also Henry, but cannot find anything. I have sent for marriage cert., as well as 2 death certificates for Henry d. 4th quarter in 1862 - one in Wigton, one in Market Drayton, Shropshire (where he had lived, but was a "wanderer") - Was a clogger. Is it possible both he and his father died the same year? (He also had a son Henry).
Any help appreciated as always.

Dear Kevin,

I am so happy to see your post. Abigal Fielding Mulcahy was my great great grandmother. She married William Mulcahy who was a blacksmith. They had 10 children. It's amazing to see who her brothers and sisters were! We have to share info. Click on the icon and we can exchange email addresses. The only info I have about where William and Abigal came from is one conversation I had with my grandfather when I was very young. I am almost certain that he said they were from Cork. How did you find all your info? Thank you so much!
Diana Mulcahy Tierney

I've not found any other documentation of George and Maggie either, except for Henry H Fielding's death certificate signed by his son that says Henry's father and mother were George and Maggie Fielding. I'm choosing to stay that course only because of that document. I'll keep on looking. ;-) Maybe one day I'll find an answer.

My ggg grandfather was Henry Hale. Apparently he lost his family to indians. He was born in Tennessee around 1900. Henry was adopted or lived with the Fielding family. He later took their name and died as Henry H Fielding. He married Mae Sharp and Had Wade and Russell Fielding. Any help with this line and finding the parents of Henry Hale Fielding, would he greatly appreciated.

He was born about 1826 in Pendleton, Anderson, SC and I found a death notice in Veterans in Civil War 1851 in MD. I was told he died during the Civil War so that would fit. He was married to Esther Meek and had several children and Albert was one of them.

Hi Janet,

Unfortunately I cannot help you with you Fielding hunt.

My Fielding family moved to Hyde from Handsworth and from Oswaldwistle and Church in Lancashire before that.

We settled in Hyde around 1870 and do not have anyone called Robert.

However, there were quite a number of Fielding families living in the area, mostly farmers or working in the agricultural business.

The 1881 census and later ones can surely help you pick up on family names especially if you have got the 'Mottram Old Road' connection.

Sorry about that,

Good hunting,

Sue.

Hi Carole,

Unfortunately I cannot help you with your Fielding hunt.

My Fielding family moved to Hyde from Handsworth and from Oswaldwistle and Church in Lancashire before that.

We settled in Hyde around 1870 and do not have anyone called Emma.

However, there were quite a number of Fielding families living in the area, mostly farmers or working in the agricultural business or shops selling grain, implements etc.

I am sure that you should be able to pick up your family from the census returns, working backwards from 1901 or even 1911 if you can access it.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Sue

Helo

Hope this information helps present a clearer picture to you of why I am interested in the name Fielding. My paternal grandmother had three sisters one of which Emma emigrated to America in early 1900's. She married a Fred Marshall. Any other information is scanty to say the least at this time.
You can contact me through the above address if you wish.

Carole Blagbrough

Fielding Connection

I have searched in vain for a Fielding connection in my family. There are Fieldings in my Calmes line for many generations. The earliest I know for sure is Fielding Calmes (1791 - 1835), the son of Marquis and Patricia Heale Calmes, born in Woodford Co, KY. His grandfather's name is sometimes listed as Marquis Fielding Calmes (born 1705, Stafford, VA), but I am not certain if that middle name is correct. That Marquis Calmes married Winifred Waller. I'd be grateful for information - or a clue.
