Barton Filby family from Pennsyvania

I'm interested in the Barton Filby household of Morgan, Greene, PA 1880. Barton was a shoemaker and per the census was born in PA 1837 married to Katharene 36.

This is not my Filby/Philby line, but my ggg-grandfather George b. England 1822 had a brother Barton--not this Barton. I just thought the name was so unusual I wondered if there might be a connection somewhere. My family didn't immigrate until 1863 but did go to Pennsylvania and eventually settled in Allegheny.

Would love to know more about any Filby families in PA around this time.

I have one possible listing.

I have a Mary Ann Filby, daughter of William Filby and Mary Flower, christened 03 Aug 1817 in Snailwall, Cambs. I have no record of her marriage, but she did apparently have a son, listed as "baseborn" named James Filby born in 1837.

I have recently began tracing my family tree. I believe that my great great grandfather, William Adkin, lived in Snailwell and emigrated to southwestern Ontario between 1841 and 1851. He was married to a Mary Anne Filby who would have been 20 years of age in 1841 and lived in the same area in England. I find them on the 1841 census as a married couple but not on the 1851 census. They reappear in Canada on a 1861 census. Does the name Mary Anne Filby or Mary Anne Adkin show up in any of your research ?

Dennis Adkin

Have a look at www.filby.org. It covers all variants of the name and they go back to about 1650 with some trees.

I am a descendant of William Filby (1781-1829), who I believe was a brother of Whitworth. William was born in Tuddenham, Suffolk, but his wife, Mary Whitworth, was born in Snailwell and they lived in that community and William died there in January of 1829. His line lived in Snailwell for a couple of generations. My great great grandfather John Filby (son of William Filby and Mary Flower, married to Sally Game) shows up in census documents in Snailwell in 1861. He and his wife emigrated to Canada along with a number of their adult children in the 1860s. My great grandfather, John Filby (wife, Sarah Jewell) settled in south-western Ontario very close to where I was raised as a child.

I have some further information about Snailwell Filbys. As far as I know, however, Whitworth Filby did not ever live in Snailwell (I have him listed as living in Purleigh, Essex, but not sure if that is correct) and I think Samuel is probably buried there only because he lived with his son. His wife, Elizabeth, was buried in Tuddenham.

At one point, I was in contact with the parish priest and got info from him. It is in actual paper format and buried in a box in my basement, but I might be able to hunt it out if you need info. Please contact me if you are looking for further information.

Re: Seeking Filby lines from Snailwell, Cambridgeshire

I am descended from someone called Whitworth Filby (born in the 1770s) who was probably the son of Samuel Filby and Elizabeth Whitworth. There is a website http://brendagrove.com/Filby/indiI029.html which lists their children, nine of whom were baptised in either Cavenham or Tuddenham (both in Suffolk) and I have checked these in the parish registers. The other two are Whitworth and Samuel; because of the name it seems most likely that Whitworth is indeed the son of Samuel & Elizabeth but I have been unable to track down his baptism or that of Samuel (junior). Both Whitworth and Samuel (junior) turn up in Purleigh, Essex in the early 1800s. Which of these children are you descended from?

I am intrigued as to why you are interested in Snailwell as the only connection I have found is that a Samuel Filby died there in 1812 and the age at death tallies. Have I missed something? I couldn’t find any Filby activity in Snailwell in the International Genealogical Index (IGI) prior to 1774. Samuel (senior) was baptised at Burgate in Suffolk. It seems likely to me that his father, James, is either the one baptised in 1709 at Bury St Edmunds or the one baptised in the same year at Hepworth (which is 6 miles from Burgate).

Snailwell is about 7 miles from Tuddenham and Cavenham just inside Cambridgeshire.

I know that some IGI records suggest that Whitworth comes from Cambridge but I have found IGI entries where it says “Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church” to be unreliable.

Maurice Maple
Hey Marion,

Any luck yet? I have traced my Filby family to the village of Cotton, Suffolk, England and the 1791 marriage of Samuel Filby and Bridget Barton. They had at least two sons, Samuel (also married and bore 2 sons in Cotton) and George and I believe another David J. all baptised in Cotton. It's not very far at all from Filby, Norfolk as I visited both this year, so looking for other Filby's in the Stowmarket area that may descend from this family.

I have been able to trace my Philby family to the Filby's from Cotton England and would love to hear from anyone with any info.

My Ggggfather is George Filby (changed the spelling to Philby in the US)was born in Cotton 1820. His brother Barton was b. there also in 1822. Both brothers moved to Dukinfield and mined coal. George and his family emigrated to the US in 1863.

Their parents were Samuel Filby and Mary Ann(e) Friend
married in Cotton 29 Dec 1819.

Samuel Filby's parents were Samuel Filby and Bridget Barton married in Cotton 28 Aug 1791. They may also have had son's David J. and George b. 1800 as I have located appropriate baptismal records also in Cotton and both are family names. I've also located a Bridget Barton b. 9 Jun 1772 in Chelsworth, Suffolk, England. If this is the correct Bridget, her parents were George and Bridget Barton.

Any other Cotton, England connections out there?
I am trying to help my solicitor 'wrap up' the estate of my late cousin Raymond neville Johnson Filby, the illigitimate son of Philip harold Oliver Filby. His last known whereabouts was Tasmania, where he was a manager of a touring coach company I think during the 19'60's. He is deceased but I am not sure when but it may have been sometime in the 1970's early '80's. I know he had previous associations with Sydney and Alice Springs. I need to know whether he had any other decendants Can you offer any ideas or assistance?. Many thanks, Marie Fellows.

Hi. I stumbled upon this site by accident, and was stunned! I never knew there were so many of us, although I can find no record of my line. Are any of you related to Roger de Filbey? Have you been able to trace that far back? Is it true that we lost Filby manor in a card game? If not, do we still own it? Please e-mail me with info, anything you have.

there may very well have been two William Filbys in Green Co., PA. There are lots of Filbys there. I am great g daughter of Wm Filby and Jane Isabel Garrison Filby at that time of Bristoria, Green County... probably related to your Wm. Filby as they both lived out their lives and are buried in Wind Ridge... He also had a son William.but I believe that he lived out his life in Greene County. William and its variations is a very common name in the family for males and females
