Jane D (Long) Filey (obit) b: 1826 TN d: 1916 OK married Washington Filey - homestead Arlington KS

(newspaper clipping)

Mrs. Jane Filey.

Jane D. Long was born in December, 1826 at Knoxville, Tennessee. While in her teens she came with her parents to Illinois and while the state was still in its infancy she with seven other sisters helped their parents in getting their home. While in her early girlhood she gave her heart to God at the age of sixteen years which faith she steadfastly kept till the Father called her home.

She was united in marriage to Washington Filey June 23, 1852, at the age of twenty-six. To this union were born three children, one son and two daughters, all living at the present time.

She with her husband and family moved to Kansas in 1871 and settled in Crawford County, the land being what is called Joy Land. The country not being healthy the remained there only three years, then came to Reno county and took a homestead. She endured many hardships, but during all those early privations she was always found at her post as a loyal worker in the Sunday School and church and a true neighbor and a faithful wife.

She was one of the early settlers of Arlington of which place she remained a resident with the exception of a few years residence in Hutchinson, where she was bereft of her husband on September 27, 1903, after which she removed to her old home in Arlington, at which her old friends were always welcome. She remained there until April 16, 1915, when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Nettie Conard, of Driftwood, Oklahoma. While there she made friends with whoever she met and was “grandma” to old and young alike. She often said she always found a friend wherever she went.

While there she seemed quite well for one so old and was often spoken of as being so spry for one of her age. But, on December 5, she complained of feeling so feeble and on Monday evening she was taken quite ill with the La Grippe and the doctor said there was no hope for her on account of her age and poor vitality. She was ill only seventeen days when the Lord called her to her reward, at the age of eighty-nine years and seventeen days when the . She was only conscious at times, but during those few times she did not forget her Savior and was ready to go. She chose her own text which was II Timothy 4:7. Her funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. Likes of the friends church at Bethel. Her remains were laid to rest in the Keith cemetery.

Although only here a short time she made many friends who did all that human hands could do while she lay sick and she was followed to her last resting place by her many friends.

She has gone to join the white robed throng in glory who have washed the garments white in the blood of the Lamb.

The Enterprise
Arlington, Reno County, Kansas
Friday, January l7, 1916
page – 3 *** column – 3
