Finley from Patrick County, Virginia

I am looking for information on my great grandfather and grandmother. I think my great grandfather (Hairston Finley) was born in Patrick County, VA and lived in North Carolina. He had a daughter, my grandmother (Marion Finley) who married my grandfather (William Penn). They were married in June 1906 and lived in Patrick County, VA. They had 3 kids Harry, Marion and James. The 1920 Census has them listed as.....
William Pann
Harry
Marion
Henley
Sarah Fenley which is my grandmother's Aunt. She helped with the kids when my grandmother passed away. This comes from word of mouth. How true don't know.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Mary C. Finley m George Wilson abt 1795 Va or Ky.

Mary C. Finley (called Miss Finly, also) may have been born about 1775 in VA or KY (KY was part of VA until 1792). She married George Wilson (b 1774) and they had 10 children. Mary died before 1812 when he married Sarah Chaney in 1812 in Sumner, TN. Name also spelled Finly. Daniel Boone had a friend named John Finley, but doubt any relationship. I'm looking for anything about this Miss Finley, as I haven't found her children or her parents.

Ann, I hope the information I've sent is correct. I've had to go back and change some of it, but I hope it will help. It's always harder to work on someone else's family tree. Look at what I sent -- if it doesn't add up or doesn't make sense, let me know and maybe the two of us can work it out and get it correct.

Sharon

I was very little but I still remember you. One of James(if this is really him) daughter was Dana, my Grandmother. I remember Uncle Joe and Aunt Rose. I realize you posted this a long time ago, but I really hope you see this. By the way, your sister and my sister has become friends again. Weird.

My great grandfather was James Lafayette Finley, and it sounds probable that we are talking of the same James Finley. He was born in 1866 in Mississippi to Bryant Finley and Julia Ann Lee. He married Katie Hollis at Indianola, Oklahoma in 1888, and she died in 1890. He married Catheryn Gead (*maybe this got mixed up through speaking from Saphoronia Goad, since Gead and Goad are similar) in Indianola, Oklahoma in 1892. To them were born four children. James moved out to Oregon to work in the lumber industry, and left his family in Oregon. He later married Geneva Ferguson (my great grandmother) in 1917 in Oklahoma. They later moved to Texas.
Please let me know if this sounds like the same people. I think we have a connection.

What part of Ireland are the Finleys from and what clan?

My distant cousin David Erastus Finley's (d. 1974) memoir, "The Life of an Old Time Minister," has an Appendix II which comprises a genealogy compiled by David's distant cousin Solomon Finley. It begins in 1263 with an Archibald Finley, but there's a break until 1356 with a John Fynlay, Bishop of Dunblane, Scotland. This line of Finleys lived in Balchrystie, Fife, Scotland until an Alexander Finley, born 30 Jul 1667, moved to County Armagh, Ireland; he later settled in Dublin. At least five of his seven children emigrated to America in 1720.

Hi all, I've noticed that changes of spellings SEEM to come from accents. Like Jimmy for Jamie. (As a child that one really intrigued me until I heard Jamie pronounced by a scotsman.)

Also, people were pretty illiterate and that makes spelling consistencies difficult. Have any of you read the journals of Lewis and Clark? Words are spelled differently within the same sentence and they were reasonably literate! It took Webster to standardize spellings. Thank goodness!

So, if you have a heavy accent and a recorder (at Ellis Island, or census reporter or whatever) who isn't that educated, you get alternate spellings of the same name. (Plus, some people deliberately wanted to distance themselves from their families for personal or business reasons.)

As for the question of where in Ireland did the Finley's come from, I agree with Robert E. Finley, Sr.'s answer. My research shows those same places. I have read that in the myths of history Finleys came to Scotland from Ireland, but that was so long ago that no one can ever prove it. (I suppose, someday Archaeology might lay that to rest one way or the other.)

Of course, there are a lot of Finleys in Ireland. You see business signs including that name everywhere, so someone moved there at some time. :-)

Delores
PS: My gr grandmother was a Finley.

My ggfather, James J. Finley was born in Killyon civil parish, County Meath, Ireland on Aug. 15, 1833. He was the oldest of six children born to parents Thomas Finley and Bridget Loy. He came to the US at the age of 12 and worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. He never saw his parents or siblings again.
My father refered to us as being Scotch Irish but I don't know what he meant by that term.

Unfortunately there was minimal contact from him and so we are left trying to track his wereabouts. I tried to find this gravestone, but was unable. I was wondering if you might be able to let me know any information that is on it. Thank you
Diane Cowlin

Hello jwmoore198,

Sorry, I can't prove that he was in the Revolutionary war, but I have a copy of The Clan Finley, by Stout. It notes: Born December 1738 in New Brittain Twp., Bucks co., Pa. 1759 Militia lt. 1763 Inn-keeper in borough of Chalfontere. Removed to Loudown co, Va. ca 1766.

Secondary info, but at least something. Have you checked with DAR? I haven't gotten around to verifying stuff from the book.

Hope it's helpful,
Delores

Hi Libby:
I saw your post and email on Roots web. My grandfather was Palcum J Fenley, Milton J Fenley’s son. I saw mention of a Perkin’s reunion. When is that? You also mentioned extensive research they have done. I am trying to find out when John Finley and Anne Norris’s daughter Rebekiah Finley got married to John Dean. My grandmother comes from the John Dean line. But he was married twice so I am trying to find out if she is from Rebekiah Finley’s line or his other wife’s Elizabeth Minton. Also, any helpful research on the Fenley’s is appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen
