Maybe that is why i can't seem to put parents to my great great great grandfather. Maybe our last name was also Farman. George R. Furman shows being born in NY but I can't seem to find a city where he was born, and no parents mentioned. There could be a connection there.
I am looking for Charles M. Furman, a Civil War veteran from New York. Found his picture years ago (still looking for a connection) and he is the spitting image of my brother, Lawrence Lee Farman (yes, Farman); we were both born at Niagara Falls, NY & raised in Norristown, PA. I remember hearing our name had been changed but don't what it was originally. I was born in 1932 so I heard that many, many years ago. And oh yes, I have a niece, Larry's daughter whose maiden name was Penny Farman. The picture of Charles is so much like Larry that even people we grew up with thought it was him. Any clue who this gentleman was and how we might be related?

the captain was the captain of the whaling ship Alexander was on before disembarking in Australia. Don't know the name of the ship or the captain. I heard either he or his father were in the French Navy, but it's not confirmed. Yes Sybil had about eight siblings I think. The photos I have are of my great grandparents, Alexander & Sarah's son Leonard and his wife Kate Spring. I still gotta visit my mum's cousin in Christchurch who I think has more photos of the family. Once I get a scanner, I hope to scan them onto harddrive if she is okay with this. Her sister in Australia has said she'll send me some more information and family pics when she can. So I'm waiting. In NZ we have a cenataph database we can access. I found my mum's uncle on it, who died as a prisoner of war in Greece. Thanx, I'll try Trove too. I live in Auckland, NZ. How about you? cheers Raewyn

Yep, you must've found him, but I don't think he was the captain, but maybe he contributed after the captain suicided. We still don't know the name of the ship yet. Yes, it's extraordinary. Very kool to find you. My mum's cousin Hassanah is searching too and she has shared a lot with me so far. She has been very generous, and has been at it much longer than me. I am available on raewynk66@hotmail.com I could have a look and forward you any pics I find. I have some old family photos, but I'm not sure who some of them are. I need to spend some time with my Aunties and Uncles, and Mum's cousins who remember who they are. I'm gonna get a scanner soon so I can scan and upload to the family tree when I work out how to do it, and so I can give/email to family. One of my young cousin's is also interested in her whakapapa (ancestry).
I tried contacting Bronwyn, but I've not heard anything back from her yet.
kind regards Raewyn

Hi Raewyn,
Sybil was 79 when she died in 1944, in Malvern Victoria australia. Her and her husband George Walter Firman had a busy life owning pubs, guest houses, and George was also a councillor for Kilmore council and he was on the Publicans council. Bronwyn never made contact with me as she posted her post back in 2002, so i dont if shes related to me. Im thinking that you are though how extrodinary, we come together on ancestry.com I joined a year ago and im absolutly addicted so be very careful what u wish for lol.
So Im guessing Iv found the french sea captain? or mariner, Im thinking if he was a captain, what country? was he in the navy? we should be able to find those records pretty easy. All milatary records are open in Australia, not sure if every country is like this. There are some things I cant access on ancestry as I have the basic package. However i have found heaps of info on my family, with over 400 people in my tree. So my great great grandmothers father is your great great grandfather? yes? Do you have any photos of them? so many questions I could ask u....
im so glad u made contact, this is fabulous..
take care Michelle

Kia ora Michelle
So good I managed to make contact. I've seen your posts on message boards. YOu are right... I was getting mixed up with ALexander's son also named Alexander.
I've not found Sybil's birth certificate yet. THere's a rumour she may have been born in Picton (Marlborough, NZ). Other children Sarah had on her own when Alexander was working on remote sheep stations in Canterbury.
Alexander was placed under the care of a whaling ship captain from maybe 7-9yrs old and may have left from New Brunswick, Canada. He was listed as Mariner on their marriage certificate. He disembarked in Australia (not sure where yet).

The name is french. Alexander's father was said to have been smuggled out of France as a 7yo and we have no idea when he made it to Canada. We don't yet know his name, and his mother may have come from Nova Scotia.

THank you for your goodwill. I'm new at this family history and have had mixed results searching. Is Bronwyn Firman a relative of yours? I've seen both of your names when I've googled Sybil Jane Firman. What was Inverary? We heard that is where Alexander died when he and Sarah were visiting Sybil. I have both his marriage and death certificate so far.

Very kool to hear from you! cheers Raewyn

Hi Raewyn,
Sybil Jane Grey married George Walter Firman, they are my great great grand parents. Sybil was Georges second wife. I dont know what happened to her and I have not found any children from them. Sybil and George married in 1889 and they had 3 children Violet Ellesmere born 1890 died 1974, Leslie Gordon born 1892 died 1960, Myra Selwyn born 1893 died 1929. I have Sybil with parents of Alex Gray and Sara Ann Wright who married in Sydney in 1862. You are saying Sybil is a sister to Alexander, I dont think this is right as Sybil was born 3 years after Alex and Sara's wedding. Although some familes had many children decades apart. Im very interested in the spelling you say is "de Greis" were does this name come from? as my father always said a french sea captain was in our family but Im yet to find him. My father is no longer alive to enlighten me futher but family rumours usually turn out part true. You can look at my family tree as its public its the Firman family tree. Maybe Im wrong with Sybils parents as I do not have Sybils birth certificate. I have some fabulous phots of a pub they owned in Ballarat called "The Carlyon Hotel" and a guest house in Toorak called "Tashinny guest house" anything else I can help you with just ask
kind regards Michelle Firman
Are you able to help me with finding out more about Sybil Jane Firman nee Grey (correct spelling is Gray)? She is sister to my great, great grandfather Alexander Gray (was de Greis) and Sarah Ann Wright his wife. They were married in an Elizabeth street church in Sydney in 1862 before emigrating to New Zealand in the same year.

kind regards

Raewyn Knowles

I was a friend of Linda's through my ex-husband, Kevin Sieg. I also was friends with her through my sister, Jenny Zimmer (Bellware). Tony Szabo and my son, Kurt Sieg were friends when they were kids, and even shared a playpen (old school term) around 1982. I may have encouraged Linda to become a nurse, something I now regret. I didn't go to Linda's funeral, something I also regret. I was VERY angry at her. She had a daughter and son to raise. Her daughter was very young, and Tony needed her alot. However, I am now 51 yrs. old and on some days, understand how she may have felt. Getting older for a beautiful woman is not easy, but there's much to be said for passing the torch to our peers and family. They have much to learn from us.

William Edwin Firman 1832 New York

I am trying to find the parents of William Edwin Firman. On different census forms he claimed to be from NY, Connecticut, and Maine. He was in the US Navy from 1854 - 1857. He then went to Maryland and and married Margaret Elizabeth Rogers. They moved to Portsmouth, VA and had a family. He died in Portsmouth in 1888. Any leads on a William from these three states would be welcome.

Giles and Josias Firmin from Suffolk, England, Winthrop Fleet

Hi: My name is Penny Furman and it is possible I am a direct descendant of Giles Firmin who came over here with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. If your Josias is the same Josias that lived in Warwick, Orange Co, NY then we would be related. If it is not, then I just did some research for you and hope it will fill you in on some information. Even if Josias isn't our grandparent, we are still probably related through one of the other males who came over here at that time.

This is what I have found:

John b. 1498 /Agnes Moulton Firmin b. 1495 Suffolk, England

s. Giles Firmin b. 1520 Suffolk(shire), England

m. Martha Doggett

s. Josias b. 1560 Suffolk, England

d. Elizabeth

Passengers with the Winthrop Fleet who arrived in 1630 include:

Elizabeth Firmin

Benjamin

Catherine

Giles m. Katherine Ives

John m. Agnes Moulton

Josias

Judith

Martha Dogett Firmin

Mary

Warren

I am not sure if the wives names are correct for Giles as I also show a relationship between him and Martha Doggett Firmin who was on the ship also.
Re: Firman/Winthrop Fleet

The information I have on the Firmin family on the Winthrop fleet is followed below. My name is Penny Furman and it is possible that I am a direct descendant of Giles and Josias Firmin from Suffolk, England.

If your Josias is the same Josias that lived in Warwick, Orange Co, NY then we would be related. This is what I have found:

John Firmin b. 1498 Suffolk, England /m. Agnes Moulton Firmin b. 1495 Suffolk, England

s. Giles Firmin b. 1520 Suffolk(shire), England

m. Martha Doggett

s. Josias b. 1560 Suffolk, England

d. Elizabeth

Passengers with the Winthrop Fleet who arrived in 1630 include:

Elizabeth Firmin

Benjamin

Catherine

Giles m. Katherine Ives

John m. Agnes Moulton

Josias

Judith

Martha Dogett Firmin

Mary

Warren

I am not sure if the wives names are correct for Giles as I also show a relationship between him and Martha Doggett Firmin who was on the ship also.

I sure hope this helps you out.

Many years ago I started a family search and would give up and then start again and go through this time after time. I have finally dedicated myself to a family tree and have traced myself back this far if all is correct. My great great great grandfather was George R Furman (Ferman, Firmin) who married Martha Smith. He was born in Connecticut? and died in Warwick, Orange Co, NY. My side of the family Harvey Everett Furman) migrated to Rochelle, IL and his children migrated to SD, NE, WI and the rest stayed in Rochelle.

Hope to hear back from you to find out if we are related.

Would you happen to have any information about the Abraham Stephen Thomas Firman family (dob 30 Jan 1854, Belfast, Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia)? I'm trying to confirm that Ellen Victoria Firman (Brady) (Gilbert) is his daughter. Abraham S. T. Firman is the son of Abraham Firman and Anne (Locke) Firman. Any information would be appreciated.

Hello. No, I'm sorry I don't have any information. I just recently made the connection for my grandmother Ellen Victoria Firman to Abraham S T Firman/ Mary Burris family. I'm fairly certain (but not 100%) certain these are her parents. I don't have any information about her family, but would like more. We do know that one of her sisters had a [female] friend who was Syrian (Lebanese). This friend had brothers, one of whom Ellen married either in Australia or in Canada. Last name of the Lebanese family was Brady or possibly "Braidy". Would you have any information that would support that?

Who was Peter Firman's wife Hannah 1795-1826

Peter, b.1795 had William b.1814 and Maria b.1820 and possibly Mary b.1817 with Hannah. All in Fakenham Magna, Suffolk, England. He married Mary Wiseman in 1826 and had a later clutch of children but who was Hannah? Have found christening records of their children but nothing re Hannah's birth, marriage or death. Any clues?
