She was born in slavery at Lynchburg, Va., and when a mere child was sold to some prominent planter named Bounty, in Kentucky, where she grew to womanhood and took the name of Sarah Jane Bounty. She later was sold to a steamboat captain and became a cook on many of the old-time Mississippi River steamers.
She distinctly remembers when William Henry Harrison became President of the United States, which time she was 35 years of age. Her mother was of African descent, while her father was a Red River Indian chief.
She had been married a second time when Harrison became President. She remembers seeing several of the engagements and battles during the Civil War and of sitting up an entire day and night in watching the soldiers going by when Sherman marched to the sea. She was married twice, her first husband being Andrew Martin and the second husband, John Fishback, who died twenty-two years ago at the age of 92.
When President Lincoln’s proclamation brought her freedom she and her husband, Fishback, were married a second time. She then worked in a Louisville laundry for thirty-seven years and then she and her husband located at Scranton and soon afterwards at Moscow.
She is able to read and even at this advanced age she reads her favorite book, the Bible, every day. Her only receipt for long life is that she does not worry and just takes things as they come. Her appetite remains good and she feels confident that she will live a few years longer.
PUB: The Monroe Record, Stroudsburg, Pa., Thursday, June 26, 1913, page 3, column 2.
I would love to share and exchange what information I have on our families. My tree is private due to I do have living folks listed on both mine and my husband's family and since it is always a work in progress verifying information and the sources, I choose to only share with those that our related and have requested a peek. I would to see any photos that you have and hopefully "borrow" them too. Please feel free to email me at JensTwigs at aol dot com.

Robert Thomas Fishback, son of Harry FISHBACK and Madeline McADAMS and my grandfather was married 3 times that I know of.
1st wife - Margaret Electa GROUT (my grandma) m.18 May 1935 div. 1945
2 children: Robert Thomas FISHBACK, Jr. 1936-1984 (my Daddy) and infant boy 1938-1938
2nd wife - Bonita Alberta KEENLYNE m.1940 (yep right date) div 1952 remarried and div. 1955
2 children: Kay Marie FISHBACK b.1946 and Lon Thomas FISHBACK b.1950
3rd wife - Lois "Peg" Eleanor CLOYD (who was also married to his father Harry) m. 1956 div. 1964
1 child: Victoria Roberta FISHBACK (who is younger than me)

Do you know where my g-grandmother 'Babe' was buried and what last name she had at the time of her death. I know she was still using the name (or was still married) Mourning when she gave info/signed her mother's death certificate in 1938.

Okay, I am going to go take a peek at your tree. I'll send you an invite to look at mine if you want one.

Thanks so much for replying. This answers a lot of questions for me. I looked at the Robert in Kane County, but that is way up by Chicago and I couldn't figure out where the Moores came in. I have a picture of "Aunt Babe" as my family called her. It's taken with my grandmother, her sister Freda Catherine. I'm guessing it's sometime in the mid to late 50s. Since she died in 1962 and I was only about 5 or 6 at the time, I really don't remember her. I do have a ring that she willed to me, it's an opal, the October birthstone and we shared an October birthday. I have quite a bit info for the McAdams. It's the Owen's that is giving me fits. My family tree is Public, but I'm not sure if you can see the pictures without having a special invite. I'd be happy to do that for you. Was your Grandfather the only child of Robert?

Hey Cathy,

When Madeline and her husband Harry divorced she got Louis Eugene and Robert Thomas stayed with his father. Though eventually Robert Thomas was raised by his Grandmother Leila Harry's mother. All three of them, Leila, Harry and Robert are resting together in a Tampa, FL Cemetery.

You can find Robert Thomas (listed as Robert F, I submitted a name correction)on the 1920 US Census living with his grandmother and her husband Sherwin Moore and his Uncle Lon Fishback and Aunt Mary Fishback in Aurora Ward 3, Kane, Illinois. By 1930 Sherwin & Leila Moore had moved to Tampa, FL with Lon and Robert still in the household according to the 1930 US Census.

I would be glad to share any other information on my grandfather Robert "Bob" Fishback.

Could you please share information on Madeline with me? I know very little about my great-grandmother. Do you have any good pictures of her and of Louis too.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Jennie

I'm trying to find out something about Robert T Fishback. My Great Aunt was Madeline McAdams Fishback. I can only find her other son Louis Eugene ever living with her in the census. I thought there was another son, but couldn't find him anywhere until I found this thread. Could you possibly shed some light on where he was in 1920 and 1930?

Cathy

Hey there SAVEBG!

WOW must be another Harry Martin Fishback! Because that is my g-greatfather's name and he DIED in Florida and WAS buried by his mother and his son in a Tampa FL cemetery. Been there and somewhere I have pictures...

Besides that information I have much more...so I assumed we have two known Harry Martin Fishbacks now unless your grandfather was actually a Henry called Harry. My g-grandfather was not a Henry but a Harry.

My FISHBACKs came to the United States with the first colony at Germanna in Virginia in the 1700s. So, I believe we have diferent FISHBACK families, since my Harry was born in Illinois and not Germany.

I hope this helps clear the air...

Jennie

Harry Martin Fishback was my grandfather born in 1898 and he died in Illinois because I attend the funeral. He was married to Geneva Dorr Sherman, which produce my mother, Dorothy Geneva Fishback. His second marriage was to Minnie. I'm sorry but I don't remember her last name. You might have the wrong Fishback. My grandfather was Henry Fishback from Germany and married to Caroline (Karoline) Yost (Ost) also from Germany. I hope this will be of some help to you.
I am Walter Fishback's relative..therefore I guess that I am your's as well.. W.T. Fishback was my gr grandfather and his daughter Mary was my grandmother..her daughter naomi is my mother. My mom and aunt martha gave uncle walt most of the history when he was doing his research.. I have to agree with larry on the same thread.. from what I have read, I believe Elizabeth Kemper Fishback to be William Kemper Fishback's mother. I have pretty much stopped looking because there is absolutely nothing out there to prove anything about him.. like is said, if you are a fishback.. you are related to all of em..smile

mrs.cka59@yahoo.com
Debra Anderson
Fishback, Davidson, Chewning,

Fishback Surname Origin
The surname of “Fischbach” is a place-name and got its origin from the village of “Fischbach”, now “Oberfischbach” located in the District of Seigen.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Johann and Agnes Fischbach, who were two of the thirty original settlers of the Virginia colonies of Germanna and Germantown in 1714.

The Fischbachs became Fishbacks in America. The change in the sound is minor and the name cannot be pronounced in German without suggesting the English words, fish and back. The words "fisch" and "fish" mean the same thing but "bach", meaning brook, is not the same as "back." Apparently, with the passage of time, the family members were identified by the name of the village in which they lived now called “Oberfischbach”

The name Fischbach became Fishback universally. Some other people may have adopted a different spelling and certainly the name is to be found in America as Fischbach. The general rule is that these people came later, at a time when spelling did matter. In the eighteenth century, exact spelling was not a requirement.
Re: Richard A. Fishback, b 1883, married Prudie Arnett in Jay Co, IN

Here are the basics on Richard:

RICHARD ALONZO FISHBACK (JOHN STEWART, WILLIAM MASON, JOHN, HARMAN, HERMAN, PHILLIP FISHBACH) was born February 2, 1883 in Blackford County, Indiana, and died September 13, 1955 in Dunkirk, In. He married BERNICE BELLE WINGATE January 20, 1904, daughter of ALFRED WINGATE and MARGARET MAITLEN. She was born March 4, 1888 in Delaware Co. IN, and died January 3, 1933 in Dunkirk, In.

Richard died of a Stroke and Heart failure.
Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dunkirk, IN

Bernice died of complications from the Flu.
Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dunkirk, IN

Children of RICHARD FISHBACK and BERNICE WINGATE are:
i.	DOROTHY LAVON FISHBACK, b. September 12, 1904; d. May 8, 1961, Delaware Co., IN Strong Cemetery, Albany IN.
ii.	FREDERICK ELLSWORTH FISHBACK, b. June 28, 1906, Blackford County, Indiana; d. October 1986, Blackford County, IN
iii.	WILLIAM GARNET FISHBACK(PEANY), b. November 6, 1910, Blackford County, Indiana; d. 1989, Delaware Co. IN.
iv.	MARGARET VIRGINIA FISHBACK, b. May 21, 1920, Blackford County, Indiana.

Strangely, my late, great aunt's research showed Prudie as being PRUDIE HANNON. She was born 1893, and died 1961. These dates seem to make sense with the DoB for Richard. Also, his first wife's death date of 1933 matches with your expected marriage date for Richard and Prudie.

I'd be interested in finding a concrete reference for Prudie & Richard's marriage.

If you need more info on linking Richard, I can list his decendants for approximately 4 generations and ancestors back to the Germanna Colonies in Virginia in the 1700's.

I can share pictures of Richard as a young man with his parents in front of their log cabin, the homestead he inherited from his father, its gravel pit, family pictures, and even a family photo ca. 1955 which shows Prudie.

Reply to this Post or e-mail me with any further questions.
Hope this helps!
Hi,
I am looking for information on Marie Fishback. Her parents are Matthew Fishback and Charlotte Zeenen.

She married Jacques Scholtes. His parents are Henry Scholtes and Angela Binder.

Their Children are:
Nicholas (we believe he attended Marquette Univeristy in Milwaukee Wisconsin to be a Doctor)
born 1887 (Luxembourg-or somewhere in Europe)
Margarite born November 30, 1888
she married Nicholas Jafferis...lived in Madison Wisconsin as an Adult and had 3 Daughters...

Lillian
Marie born 1891
Franz born 1893
Catherine born 1894

They all were born in Luxemboug or Europe somewhere.
I don't know the parents Grandparents dates of birth or death. I do know they came over in 1910...I think. I looked it up on the Ellis Island site and found the whole family except Lillian...but we have a book with her signature to her sister Margarite. Also don't know for sure if the wifes names Charlotte Zeenen and Angela Binder are correct. (need birth, death and marriage dates for these people, as well as all their children if possible.)

Thanks for your help.
Hello Carlton here. Not sure on Jeremiah just yet. Had been e-mailing in the last few months with another interested in Jeremiah. We know we have a John Weakley who goes in to Ky. , it is known that some of this John's descendant do go into Kansas and area later, but don't think the timeline fits for Jeremiah quite correctly. We know this John, had at least sons, John and Francis, they are named in a court case , Rappahannock County Va, Cheek vs Weakley. Cheek sues for a small debt, and seeks payment from disbursement of property left in the hand of son's John and Francis. if I remember correctly - the suit mentions John the father , now in Kentucky. The suit was around 1830 or so , so kind of late for what I know of Jeremiah. Have you seeen any information on a John Weakley marriage to a Polly Denboe or Denoe? I spotted this in a book on early Kentucky marriages, seems to me this was in Woodford on Hardin County. Glad to help, if any possibility.

Carlton, I know your asking about your Sparks marriage to Fishback but I'd like to ask you about the Weakley's. My ggrandfather was Jeremiah Weakley who was married to a Sarah (Cook). I'm new at this genealogy stuff but first picked him up in Scott Co, Ky. His father is said to also be Jeremiah from either Md or Va, I haven't been able to determine which. My Weakley's left Ky about 1852 & went to IN, IL ending up in Ks in the late 1870's. Is it at all possible that we are in your Weakley family tree? Any information would be very much appreciated....thank you

Jim -

I got goosebumps as I read your posting on the Fishback family. Lester married my grandmother's (Ruby) older sister Atha I think.

I have pictures of their most adorable children - Noble and Veda. If this fits, please let me know.

Also, I have long been on the hunt for info on Veda's father. Do you have ANY info??? Rumor has it that he was 1/2 indian.

Thanks for any help.

Becky
