I worked for a Joseph Ellmore Fitz-hugh when I attended high school and college in Fairfax, Va, Mr. Fitz-hugh was a retired VEPCO employee who retired and bought a florist business in Fairfax. His wife's name was Sarah. I would like to know where he is buried to honor him, this man was a great influence in my life as a young man.

Thanks for all the information on Lawrence's family! It nicely coincides with the records I've been finding.

And of course you're right--Lawrence's daughter Jane was born much too late to be my Jane. However, I believe it's feasible that Lawrence and my Jane were siblings.

BTW, yesterday I found a photograph of Cmdr William E Fitzhugh. On the off chance you don't already have it, here is the link:

http://www.picturehistory.com/product/id/15661

Hi Charleen,

Haven't heard from any tree owners yet, but I spent all day at the computer yesterday and had a bit of luck. After all these years, I finally Jane Fitzhugh and Thomas Cutler's marriage record! They were married on 12 September 1826 in Fayette County, Ohio.

So I began searching for Fitzhughs in adjoining Ohio counties and found in the 1850 Clinton County census a Lawrence Fitzhugh, born ca 1801 in Virginia. His wife was Clarissa, and his children were named William E (who later was a Commodore in the US Navy), Sarah A, Henry W, Elizabeth E, Jane, Mary, James F, and Clarissa.

My question to you is this: Do you have any information on Lawrence Fitzhugh, son of Nicholas and Sarah Ashton Fitzhugh? I've searched trees and other online sources for Nicholas's family, and his son Lawrence's approximate birth year is the only information I have seen listed. Is it possible that Lawrence from Clinton County, Ohio is Nicholas' son?

Charleen, Thank you so much for your reply, as disappointing as it is. I'm sure you're right, but I'm not willing to give up without a fight! I found several public trees showing Ann Elizabeth Fitzhugh being born 1791 and dying 1792, with a sibling Ann Elizabeth Jane Fitzhugh being born 1802 (or thereabouts), and with no death dates. I'm in the process of contacting the tree owners to see if they can tell me their sources. I know my chances are very slim that they will have sources, and I do know how incredibly unreliable public trees often are, but they have provided me with some good clues in the past, so I'm going to give it a try, particularly after 40 years of looking for my Jane's family.

When concrete information is as sparse as our Jane's, it's easy to speculate, and we used to wonder if Jane had married (or run away with) somebody beneath her station and was disowned by her family. ;o)

Thanks again for your help.
Ruth Ann

First, I do not have any info indicating that Anne Elizabeth Jane Fitzhugh had an older sister Anne Elizabeth who died. The Anne Elizabeth Jane Fitzhugh I have has birth and death dates different from your Jane Fitzhugh...even possibly an earlier birth date of 1800.
I'm sorry but I think they are two different people.
Charleen

Hi Charleen,

Still looking for my Jane Fitzhugh. I just ran across an Ann Elizabeth Jane Fitzhugh, daughter of Nicholas and Sarah (Ashton)Fitzhugh. I've checked a number of different family trees, and all have only birth information on Ann Elizabeth Jane--nothing of her later life or death.

Also, I see that she was named after an older sister Ann Elizabeth who died, and ams thinking that she might have gone by "Jane" as a consequence.

As the keeper of the Virginia Fitzhugh database, I wonder if you can shed any light on this daughter of Nicholas and Sarah.

Waiting with fingers crossed!
Ruth Ann

Many of the Fitzhughs from Piddington moved on to Hardingstone and from Hardingstone into Northampton itself. My paternal grandmothers family were Fitzhughs from Hardingstone and before that were from Piddington. The name was originally Fichot and my dad was told by the church of the latter day saints that its likely they were French Hugenots. As far as I'm aware there isn't a connection between the Fitzhughs in Kingsthorpe and those from Piddington and Hardingstone but I could be wrong.

I'd be happy for you to email me as you find other bits and pieces. hotomy@hevanet.com

Charleen

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'm glad to know that there is a Fitzhugh database, but it's disappointing that Jane doesn't appear in your records. I guess that explains why this is a brick wall, doesn't it?

The only other thing I can think of is that my great-grandmother's sister named her eldest daughter Mary Jane, so I suppose it's possible her mother's name was Mary Jane, and she went by Jane.

I'll try to come at this from different directions to see if anything turns up.

Thanks again!
Ruth Ann

I wish I could help you! I'm the Keeper of the Virginia Fitzhugh Database but do not have a Jane Fitzhugh who m. a Thomas Cutler. In fact, I do not have any Jane Fitzhugh that I cannot account for in all of the nearly 30,000 people in the database. If you come up with any other even tiny tidbit of info about her please let me know. Thanks
Charleen

I've been researching my family history for over 40 years, but this is one of my "brick walls".

My 3rd great-grandmother was Jane Fitzhugh (born ca 1808 in Virginia and died July 1850 in Miami County, Ohio. She was the wife of Thomas Cutler (b ca 1800 in Virginia and died July 1850 in Miami County, Ohio.) Both Jane and Thomas, as well as one or more of their children died in a cholera epidemic when my 2nd great-grandmother was 16, so there is little or know background information on either parent.

According to my great-grandmother, Jane's family were wealthy landowners, which means nothing, because just about everybody wants to think their ancestors were prominent people. But great-grandmother always said that they owned "Guinea slaves", an extra tidbit which might possibly lend some creedence to the story. Or not.

I'm hoping to find somebody with information on this Fitzhugh Cutler connection, or at least somebody who might point me in the right direction in my research.

I'm the Keeper of the Virginia (state) Fitzhugh Database and Admin of the Fitzhugh DNA project though Family Tree DNA in Houston, TX. Currently we're working at getting some Kingsthorpe Fitzhughs tested and think that we may already have a couple of them who live in the USA in the project.
The post about Thomas Fitzhugh is several years old but I hope the following may be useful. The baptisms for Kingsthorpe contain two possible Thomas Fitzhugh. 1. Thomas son of John and Elizabeth baptised on Nov 19th 1808. 2. Thomas son of William and Phyllis baptised on March 13th 1816. I have information on the first as my ancestral line converges with John and Elizabeth ( nee Blinkes ). I do have three or four more generations back if you are still interested.

See also message about DNA.

My husband Gilbert Fitzhugh is descended from John Fitzhugh who married Harriet Wyvill in 1825. According to a family letter (which we have) from his daughter Elizabeth (known as "Lizzy") to her niece Blanche Fitzhugh, John was from Northampton and that is consistent with the 1841 census which shows his wife and children. The letter says he had no sisters and his mother died shortly after his marriage. In the letter, Lizzy says that her father's (John) cousin was "a gentleman farmer - a Mr. Stephen Knight, who had a very interesting family - delightful home - private governess, etc. He was extraordinarily fond of music."
I have more info but can't find it right now. We would like to identify John's parents and also know more about Stephen Knight and his family.
Phil & Josh
The Nottingham link I haven't found as I have been concentrating on searching for baptism of John Fitzhugh born c1776. I have read all Fitzhugh wills that I could find and both Charles & Deborah made a will. Charles, who died 1776, left everything to Deborah, Deborah, died 1777, left everything to her 3 children Charles, Elizabeth & Ann.
I found baptisms for Elizabeth 1756, Anne 1762, Deborah 1765, Charles 1767 & John 1758. Deborah died the same year 1765, there are 2 burials for a John 1760 & 1763, either of which may be the child John.
Sandra

Thanks Josh

Very interesting. I have seen some links to USA before. One indicates Fitzhughs came from USA which I find doubtful. One user has reference to a Bedford in USA but it's more logical it was Bedford (county town of Bedfordshire) in England which is just 20 miles SW of Northampton(and Kingsthorpe) county town of Northamptonshire. Anyone who does not know Nottingham, (county town of Nottinghamshire)it is 60 miles due North of Northampton / Kingsthorpe - so also a possible connection. Walgrave (in Northamptonshire) is a small village just 6 miles N of Kinsgthorpe. I note the reference to Elizabeth Cawsby which has also been spelt Crosby and Causeby.
I am unable to check this out just yet but will do so. Does anyone else have anything to add to this or the FITZHUGH family? Hi Sandra, any views? Thanks again Josh.
Regards
Phil of Northampton (which subsumed Kingsthorpe c1900).

Saw your message on the Fitzhugh list. I am descended from the
Fitzhugh/Wyvill union of 1825 in Nottingham. A few years ago my wife
and I did some research in Walgrave and at the Northhamptonshire
archives. Here's what I think is the geneology before then.

John Fitzhugh, my gg grandfather, was born Feb 14, 1800 in Walgrave.
His younger siblings were Charles, Edward M and Thomas. I believe
Edward may have emigrated to the US though I cannot find the records
of that. John emigrated to Brooklyn NY in the mid-1850s, after first
moving to Nottingham and marrying Harriet Wyvill. We think he may have
become bankrupt in a real estate venture related to the railroads
which is why he left the UK.

I believe John's father was Charles, born April 5 1767 in Kingsthorpe.
His mother was Elizabeth Barrett. They were married Oct 30 1797 at the
Walgrave church.

Charles' father I think was also Charles, christened 10/3/1727 in
Kingsthorpe and his mother I believe was a Deborah ?. This Charles had
several siblings: Anne, Elizabeth (one appears to have died as a child
and been replaced by another), Edward, William and then another
Edward.

Charles' father was, I believe, John FitzHugh, c. 1/1/1687 in
Kingsthorpe. He had by an Elizabeth ? a brother Charles c 11/16/1690
and an illegitimate half sister Sarah by Elizabeth Cawsby.

Finally, and here's where the thread stopped (if I got the above
correct), John's father was another John, born in Kingsthorpe in ?
and who died April 10, 1715. My notes say this John was married to a
Theodosia ?, who died 11/15/1717.

If I have something wrong, or if this helps, let me know. I live in
Vermont USA.
