Hi, I just started on ancestry.com and I am so glad to find this post. My father was your mother's cousin - Danny O'Leary. His two aunts, Aileen and Kathleen married George and Jim Fitzsimmons. I always loved the fact that 2 brothers married 2 sisters- (I have the same situation on my mother's side too). I spoke to your mother Shirley, by phone in 2001 to find out some info for my family tree. My name is Margie O'Leary Jackson. She said your father wasn't too well then. I tried calling her again about 2 years later but the phone was disconnected. She told me that you lived in W. Falls and I believe your name is Terry and your husband is a policeman(?). I live in East Fishkill on East Hook Rd. Your mother used to stop by our house in Brooklyn when she was around 16, on her way home from school, St. Brendan's. I stayed at Aunt Aileen's house next to Aunt Kathl's - your grandmother, each time my mother went into the hospital to have another baby, my brother in 1939 and my sister in 1941. I played with Janet as she was my age - I went to see Aileen King in Lynbrook 2 years ago and she did not tell me anything about your mother but did tell me that Janet had died. I would like to update my tree with the O'Leary information. Anything you can tell me would be a blessing. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Margie

Cheryl
We are most definitely correct. I have hardcopy records including marriage and death records. I think some people don't look at the records carefully before including them in their tree particularly when it comes to the more distant family tree members.
Dan

Hi Dan,

Looks like you and Cheryl are right. Fitzsimmonses are thick on the ground, I think. I live in Vienna, Maine in the US (pop. 500). My assertion about the frequency of the name in midlands counties, at least in the 19th century, is based pretty much on researching it. I would not contend that those are the only counties in which it occurs; Ireland is a small place, and people get around. Another interesting correlation, again impressionistic, is that substantial numbers of midlands people came to New Jersey. This probably has to do with a common phenomenon: The first immigrant arrives, finds work, and writes home to the next, etc. Martin Scorsese observed this in his New York Italian neighborhood, where everyone on the same block was from the same village on "the other side." In any case, good luck to you and Cheryl with your research.

Best--Ed McCarthy

He also had a step sister Mildred and a step-brother Fred from my Grandmother Edith's first marraige.

I have had good luck tracing my Mothers roots in England...her sister is still alive in England and I am getting some more info from her so I can work on my Grandfathers side of the family. He died 3 months after I was born so I never met him.

I like you, have been stalled at Patrick Fitzsimmons and I would really like to go further so I will keep on looking.
Dear Cheryl
Your grandfather James Francis Fitzsimmons was married to Edith. He was an engineer with Western Electric in N.J. He had two kids Ruth and James. James was your father, right. I am sorry about his death. When my Dad died I really got into tracing the family's history. My mother is still alive and I have had little luck tracing her Italian records.
Is your father's sister Ruth still alive?
In addition to James, Edward and Daniel, Patrick also had a daughter Mary and I have had little luck finding any information out about her. I believe she may have been a nun and died in some type of convent for elderly nuns in NJ.
I have no local older relatives still living around here so I miss out on the anecdotal stories but my father had a cousin John who said the Irish side originated in Cork.
An aside to this whole thing is that alcoholism seems to have also been passed down the family tree.
It's nice to hear from you.
Dan

Cheryl:

I am from Newark NJ and have an Edward Fitzsimmons in my family tree, though he appears only once, as a baptismal sponsor, about 1870, when he was about 15 years old. What became of him I do not know, but if he were the same person you mention, it would be a significant link, particularly as you have the names of his father and mother. I would be pleased to know more. Fitzsimmons is of course a common Irish midlands name, as McCarthy is in Munster. My best guess is the family would have come from Leitrim, where Mary Fitzsimmons married my Great Grandfather, John Mulvey, before their emigration about 1865. Be in touch if it seems to make sense.

Best Regards--Ed McCarthy

Hi Dan,
Nice to hear from you. My grandfather was James Francis Fitzsimmons who died in 1978, my Great,Great Grandfather was Edward and Great,Great,Great was Patrick. My father was James Warren Fitzsimmons who died in 2000.

We left Jersey City when I was 2 and moved to Edison, NJ. I know live in Brick, NJ.

I see you have added a James Fitzsimmons as Patricks father. I feel like I have hit a wall getting any other info on him but since I have just started I will just keep pursuing. I am also working on my Mothers side which was all in England...my Mom was a war bride. So I am tackling alot at once but it is fun everytime I discover a new piece of information.

I found another persons family tree which lists my Grandfather but they have totally different parents for Edward..So I don't know where they got there information.

I will be happy to keep in touch with you as I find more information and would be great if you could do the same.
Dear Cheryl
You have made my day. I have been a subscriber to ancestry for a few years and you are the first family member I have encountered. I generated that info on Patrick myself and Edward worked as a printer for the newspaper.
Who was your grandfather and father?
Patrick's son Daniel moved to Ulster County NY in the late 1800s following his wife's death in 1895 during childbirth in NYC. He remarried a woman, Florence Loft, also from Jersey City and had five more kids including my grandfather, Joseph Fitzsimmons who died in 1993. My own father, Daniel, died one year ago here in Albany, N.Y. where I live.
I am really glad you contacted me Cheryl. Do you still live in Jersey City?
I am still trying to get more info on Patrick's parents but it gets very frustrating. My ultimate goal is to find out what county in Ireland my family came from.
Dan

I have Patricks death listed as 12/12/1887. Edward Fitzsimmons was my Great, Great Grandfather. My maiden name is Fitzsimmons and was born in Jersey City, NJ.

I have found Ireland listed for some but not sure where.
Death of James FITZSIMMONS - 1900

Article from The Weekly Examiner, San Francisco, Thursday, 28 June 1900

DESPERATE DEED OF A MANIAC

Iowan Runs Amuck, Killing One Person and Injuring Others

Cedar Rapids (Iowa) June 24 - Charles Mefford, a maniac, today killed James Fitzsimmons, fatally injured Joseph Drake, seriously and probably fatally injured Mrs. James Fitzsimmsons, slightly injured Miss Kate Fitzsimmons and then ended his own life.

Mefford, who was twenty-seven years old came here from an asylum two years ago and had never been returned. Late Saturday night he became wild and darted out of his home, a raving maniac. The police tried unsuccessfully to find him.

Shortly before5 o'clock this morning Reginald Andrews, the janitor at the Old Ladies' Home, was awakened by crashing glass. The next moment Mefford stood before him stark naked, swinging a neck-yoke.

"I have murdered the whole family tonight and I am going to kill you next and then every lady in the home," exclaimed Mefford. With this he attempted to brain Andrews. The latter choked him into submission.

Rushing through the house, Andres locked the old ladies into their rooms, notified the police and ran across the street to the home of James Drake for assistance. As Andrews and Drake emerged a few moments later Mefford, carrying an ax, was seen to plunge through a window in the home of James Fitzsimmons, near by. As he entered the room Mrs. Fitzsimmons uttered a scream. Mefford swung the ax and brought it down toward her head. Her unlifted arm saved her life. The arm was broken in two places and she sustained a serious scalp wound.

Mr. Fitzsimmons dashed into the room and grappled with the maniac. Mefford shook him off and split his skull with a blow of the ax. Then dashing upstairs, Mefford attacked Miss Kate Fitzsimmons, inflicting a number of severe scalp wounds.

When Mefford came down stairs he encountered Drake, struck him on the head with the ax, and taking Drake's revolver, ran out of the house. After running several blocks he put a bullet into his left breast below the heart. Running on two or three blocks further he sat down on the curbstone. Placing the revolver to the center of his forehead he fired again. He continued to wave the pistol above his head, but as the first officer grabbed the revolver from behind Mefford fell over into the gutter dead.

Hi, Dan, thanks for getting back to me. My maiden name was Fitzsimmons. I have traced the line back to James when he arrived in Liverpool from Ireland. The furthest back I have is him appearing on the 1841 English Census. There are many Fitzsimmons in Britain. I don't know any of James siblings unfortunately. It is highly likely that one or more of them emigrated in the mid to late 1800's as many Irish did to find work. What caught my eye was the James and Margaret connection with your line. I picked up Margarets maiden name from my great grandfather John's birth certificate. It was this John who moved to Cheshire from Liverpool. Those members of the family who remember family stories have always maintained that the family were not Roman Catholic. This still doesn't help with tracing their origins in Ireland. James had a second marriage and on this certificate he names his father as William. There are no Williams in my branch of the Fitzsimmons, are there any in yours? Given that the first names tended to go down the line it is possible that there was a son named William who was a brother to James.
All very tenous I am afraid but you never know.
Regards
Cheshirelassy

HI, Dan, my great great grandfather was James Fitzsimmons born circa 1808 in Ireland. He was married to Margaret McBride. He came from Ireland to Liverpool circa 1839. I have been unable to track back any further as the county of his birth is never given on any census data. On his second marriage certificate he gives his fathers name as William. His descendants all settled in Cheshire. If you have any Liverpool links there may be a connection
Regards
Cheshirelassy

Hello, wondering if there might be a connection with our FITZSIMMONS'..My great grandfather was Lawrence Fitzsimmons, his wife's name not sure of as each census record has a different name for her..Bridget, Bedelia, Fidelia, and a few others. THey were in Illinois and Iowa before settling in Nebraska. They had several children that I have included in my Fitzsimmons webpage. I cant seem to find much on them and nothing on my great grandmother other than the few census records.
my webpage is http:/community.webtv.net/Saydee4/LANGANSfromIRELAND
If responding please do so directly to me, I have a hard time navigating around this website. Thank you
crismurphy3 @gmail.com
