Hello Siobhan, It is a long time since I checked this message board and I am delighted to see yet another member of the extended family interested in researching the family history. I am in contact with both Siobhan G. and Catherine W.My daughter and I are travelling to Ireland in October and will be staying for a few days with Siobhan G.
I live in Coventry, England. My great grandmother, Maria/Mary Fitzsimons was a daughter of John Fitzsimons of Ballylow. She married a Henry Murphy and they had 5 children, Luke John, Martha, my grandmother, Laurence and Anna. They lived in Tinode until 1885. They disappear at this point to resurface in Dublin in 1891, for the marriage of their daughter Martha to Richard Fitzharris. One of their daughters was Marcella, my mother. She often spoke of Ballylow as apparently, as children, they stayed there during the summer, travelling to Blessington on the steam tram.
Maria's brother Owen(Eugene) married Anna Murphy and Owen became the game keeper at The Ballylow lodge( old hunting lodge), which was burned down in the troubles.
I am just beginning to write up the history of the Fitzsimons/Murphys and would love to hear from you.
Ah, yes, the hunting lodge that was burned down in the rebellion. I took my mom to see the ruins just a few months ago and got some pics although not great ones as it was twilight. Our ancestor, Robert Fitzsimons [brother to my direct ancestor, John, lived on that plot (John lived in the original part of the Ballylow house that's still standing, that my mother grew up in)]. Kathy Trant, who is currently secretary of the Blessington Historical Society, wrote a book called "The Blessington Estate." Have you read it? She talks about how Robert, his wife and children (I've tracked 7 kids thus far) were ousted in 1854, extremely poor but having survived the famine, so that the Marquis of Downshire could build the hunting lodge there. I've been quite unsuccessful trying to track down this branch of the family. They just disappeared, last seen, according to Kathy Trant, walking down the Dublin Road. No idea if the Marquis gave them any financial assistance, if they emigrated, went to the Naas workhouse or just starved on the road. If you know anything at all, can you share it with me?

Happy to share any info with you that I have, although Catherine, being a Murphy, knows a great deal more of the Murphy branches there. Do you know the Fitzsimons families who are still out there? I do, which is why I ask. Delighted that Catherine proved to be such a direct connection for you. It's always exciting to make such a connection!

cheers,
Siobhan Gallagher (I'm here in Ireland through October)

Hello Siobhan,

Thank you for your reply. I've just logged on and can't belive that Catherine actually knew my mum. Hence that late response a week later. I found this discussion board completely by chance as I was researching an old hunting lodge that is in Ballylow for my Uncle John (He still lives in Balinatona).

I thought it was rather a long shot that anyone might respond to such a random email. Thank you for your reply once again. I have Catherine's email address and will contact her in the morning. My mum left me some old family photo's which I will scan in work this week and send to you, I think they may be of her Aunt Ester, a relative of yours also.

Kind Regards,

Siobhan Canavan
Siobhan, sounds indeed like we might have a connection but I suspect you were trying to respond not to me but to Catherine, a distant cousin of mine who derives from the Ballinatona Murphy branch that I met through this website. If so, let me know as I have her contact info. She lives in Switzerland now but is from Blessington. In fact, I'll forward this response from you to her to ensure she sees it.

Right now I'm in Ireland through October. Where are you? Send me some more info on your family tree and we'll see what we can put together!!

best,
Siobhan Gallagher

Hi, my name is Cathy Fitzsimons--I work on our family tree, and the information that my husband, George Martin Fitzsimons gave is partly incorrect. His father is George Joseph Fitzsimons, and his grandfather is George Arthur Fitzsimons. George Arthur Fitzsimons was the one in the orphanage. Sorry, but we do not appear to be any relation to Richard Fitzsimons, as we have traced our ancestry back to 1851 in Ireland, and there was no mention of any brother, uncle, father, etc. named Richard. I had good luck when I searched the UK census records for our ancestors. I if find anything for Richard, I will let you know. Good luck.

Hello Charlie;

I am writing to ask if your father was the late Charles B. FitzSimons, actor and producer. I would be very interested in hearing from you. Although I don't have information on your great ancestor, I have spent much time in Ireland and at the Ancestry website, searching for information about my family in Mayo (surname Fox),and in Down (surnames McCartan and Doran), where my wife and I have also visited. I would like to ask you a little about your father's work on the Quiet Man. I understand that in addition to being a lawyer, he was very instrumental in making all sorts of arrangements, in addition to his wonderful role as Hugh Forbes. I was sorry to hear of his passing. I hope that you will please contact me.

Sincerely,

Bob Russell in South Thomaston Maine r.j.russell@gte.net

He moved to Los Angeles to be with his daughter and sons in the late 1950's. Two of his brothers were Jack and Frank who we think moved to the east coast of the United States.

hi Charlie,
My great-grandfather was James Joseph Fitzsimons, who lived in New Jersey after he left Kells. As far as I know, Frank stayed in Kells, his wife Nancy died just a few years ago. As for Jack, he died in 1950, I believe in Kells, but not sure about that.

The east coast siblings that I know of are my grandfather James Joseph, and his brothers Michael and Joseph.
I have more info on the rest of the family if you want to email me.

regards,
Diane

They were the parents of Catherine who married Gov. Hammond. Am especially interested in Christopher's siblings and parentage.
Wow, Catherine, that's terrific, thank you so much! My mother was of Fitzsimons/Healy descent and there are a number of Murphys on both trees. Does any of this relate to you? Because I think my info may be incomplete or slightly flawed.

I believe 'my' Ann/Anne Murphy was related to Willie Murphy of Ballinascullogue in Wicklow, who was godfather to my mother, Mary Healy. I have him on my Healy tree as being son of my maternal grandfather's sister, Teresa Healy, and her husband, John Murphy. (I have an incorrect notation that this John Murphy died young of mumps, age 22 in 1934 so this might apply to a son John that they had, not the father, but I don't have info on any son.) Willie Murphy, my mother's godfather died in 1991 at age 77 and I have a scanned copy of his funeral mass card on my computer if that's of any interest to you.

I crossed paths via letter with a woman in England a few years ago, Bernardette Feehan, who's related to the Fitzsimons and she got stuck going back as far as your relative, Anne Murphy's husband. I'm not sure if this snippet came from my mother or Bernardette but I have this noted on the tree footnotes: "Anne Murphy's father's name was John. Her brother was Henry who apparently never married. Her brother, Christopher, had a son, Luke, and Anne may also have had a brother, Luke. Anne's sister, Martha, married a Henry Murphy (no idea if any relation.) Martha & her husband, Henry, had a daughter, Marcella, who married a Fitzsimons."

Another cousin of my mother's, Ned Fitzsimons, of the same generation as Willie Murphy (born first quarter of 1900s) married a Margaret (Cissy) Murphy but she's from Saggart in Dublin, and they live in Wicklow, Ned's birthplace. Her daughter Gwendolyn, as it happens, married a Murphy--a Nigel Murphy, although no idea if he's from Wicklow. I suspect Cissy would have told me if he was distantly related to her but she didn't mention it.

In any case, most of my Fitzsimons cousins aren't really interested in genealogy so it'd be great to hook up with someone who is, if your relative is interested or if you and I turn out to have several relatives in common. My mother will be so excited if this yields any more info. Her mother died when she was 19 and her father when she was four years old so she doesn't have much detail.

Thanks again.
Siobhan Gallagher

Catherine, Bernardette Feehan may have already told you that I'm in Blessington, Wicklow, now for a few months. Although my focus is on Fitzsimons and Healy from there, there is a great deal of intersection with the Murphy family as you undoubtedly know.

If you'd like me to keep an eye out for anything specific, including photos of gravestones I might come across, why don't you e-mail Bernardette who can forward it to me (so we can keep our e-mail addresses off this public message board) and then I'll connect with you directly about what you may be looking for.

I hope soon to be accessing the Wicklow Heritage Society's register of gravestones, and I can source the Blessington Society's register of baptisms and marriages 1819-1854 quite easily at the local library.

Siobhan

FITZSIMONS of Manor Kilbride/Ballylow, Co. Wicklow, Ireland

Margaret Mary Fitzsimons, born 8 Sept 1896, married my mother’s father, Francis (Frank) Healy in 1931 and they lived in Blessington, Co. Wicklow, all their lives. She died 26 November 1953.

Margaret Mary had seven siblings, of which I have little information:
• Patrick (b. 16 March 1882; died 26.11.1957 in Manor Kilbride; no info on any spouse or family);
• Martha (b. 16.9.1883; died 21.10.1954; married to John Browne; lived in Manor Kilbride; no info on any offspring);
• Anna Marie (b. 11.2.1886; became Dominican nun, Sr. Mary Laurence);
• John James (b. 4.11.1887; d. 4.4.1960; believed to have remained unmarried; lived in Manor Kilbride);
• Edward (Ned) James; b. 28.4.1890; d. age 29 during flu epidemic; may have had a son, Owen Fitzsimons; I have no info on any spouse or other offspring);
• Christopher (Christy) Thomas (b. 5.5.1892; d. 23.1.1976, Manor Kilbride; unmarried);
• Brigid Catherine (b. 16.4.1894; died approx age 15)

The father of these eight children was Eugene or possibly Owen/Eoghain Fitzsimons and was married to Anna/Ann/Annie Murphy.

Eugene/Owen’s father was, I’m told, either John or Robert Fitzsimons of Ballylow, Wicklow, who may have originally come from Scotland. Brothers John and Robert Fitzsimons are shown as living on same land in separate houses in 1853, as per ‘Primary Valuation of Ireland’ document. John appears to have died around 1868.

I have contact with the descendents of Eugene/Owen’s brother, Edward, who married an O’Neill, so I have some limited info on those descendents, but they have little info and even less interest in genealogy, that I have discovered thus far. I am not aware of any other siblings Edward and Eugene/Owen may have had.

As per my mother, her mother, Margaret Mary died of a stroke in 1953 while talking with the local priest. Her husband, who died in 1937 of cancer of the throat, was the local rate collector (or whatever they called it; he collected the taxes door to door) and his wife, Margaret, took over for him in that job after he died. Frank Healy liked to play the fiddle.

I would very much like to learn more about my antecedents and to make contacts with any relatives in Ireland or elsewhere. Although I am American, I plan to be in Ireland throughout 2008 and hope to make many contacts and increase my data. If you can help, I would love to hear from you.

Also, the Fitzsimons of Wicklow crisscross the Healy family there in numerous ways and I have info on that side as well if anyone seeks anything specific.

Thanks!

Siobhan Gallagher
Hi Siobhan,

Here is some of the information that i have. I would certainly be interested in anything you have on the Murphy families.

John Murphy of Ballynatona married Ann Higgins of Ballynatona around 1850. I believe that John's father was Luke Murphy.

They had the following children:-

Luke (1852)- my great grandfather
Anne (1854) - married Ownen Fitsimons who was much older than her
Maria
Christopher
Henry - lived with Luke and his family and never married
James

Luke married Esther Higgins of Ballynatona in 1881 and they had the following children:-

John (my grandfather)
Bridget
Christopher
Anne
Esther Mary

John married twice - his first wife was Theresa Brady and they had 2 children Cathy who died and Esther (known as Cis)
He then married Theresa Clarke and had 3 sons:
Louis known as Louie
Sean
Henry - my father

Hope this helps - i have more information than this - it will be interesting to put it all together

Catherine

Rita,

I am really interested in family that may be from Westmeath. I am tracing my Murtagh relatives in Ballynaskeagh(multiple poss spellings), Co. Westmeath, records can be found in Delvin Parish records for the following:

William Murtagh m. Mary Nead July 31, 1842; witnesses Michael Daly and Catherine Murtagh (unknown what relationship at this time).
Children: Peter, b. 4/13/1848; Matthew b. 7/8/1851; Judith b 1/14/1855; Patrick b. 4/9/1858; Mary b. 10/21/1860; Bridget b. 3/12/1862 (my Ggrandmother) m. Patrick Murray 10/6/1884.

Patrick Murray parents Thomas Murray and Catherine farrell.

Any help would be greatly appreciated if you can match any of this in your records.

Regards,
Maureen

Hello Jackie,

I am contacting you again because I see a new "common" name in this thread that I did not see beforein your other correspondence with Ann.

This new message mentions a Lenore Murray, and Murray was my maiden name also. My GGrandfather Partick Murray was born in Ballynaskeagh. Is that near to Collinstown? If I am not mistaken both towns are in Co. Westmeath, right?

Anyhow, I would appreciate it if you would check with your friend and see if she would mind corresponding with me so we can see if we may have a connection along that side of the family.

The information I can provide to Lenore's family on the Murray line is as follows (that is the name we have had the hardest time tracing):

Patrick Murray (b. 3/15/1858 to Thomas Murray and Catherine Farrell) and Bridget Murtagh (b. 3/12/1862 to William Murtagh and Mary Nead) were both born in Ballynaskeagh, and married on 10/6/1884 in the Church of the Assumption in Delvin. The witnesses at their wedding were Michael Daly and Catherine Murtagh (if/how she is related to Bridget is also unknown at this time).

Patrick and Bridget had 6 children born in Ireland between 1885 and 1896: Mary, Kate, Margaret, Thomas, Nicholas and Bridget before emigrating to the US. They left Cobh on 5/2/1901 on the SS Majestic, arriving New York/Ellis ISland on 5/7/1901 and arrived in Chicago @! 1902 where their last child (Patrick) was born.

I would be most interested to discover if any of this family is known to you or your friend. Please contact me direct at mw2657@cs.com if you would. Thanks!

Regards, Maureen

Jim
If it wasn't for grave markers, I wouldn't have a clue where my Irish ancestors were from in Ireland. I tried going to the Catholic church, but they're records are time consuming to go through and they are hard to get to see. They are the originals. The family shortened the name to Simons or Simonds (I have found it both ways in the census) and lived in Maple Park, Kane Co. IL My great-great grandfather was Nicholas (Fitz)Simons. I have his, James and Christopher's naturalizations records, but they don't list where they were from. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. I am pretty sure his oldest daughter, Rose, was born in Ireland. She married Maurice Flynn.
Colleen

I already have all the birth, marriage and death records I have been able to locate. I checked my notes from the cemetery again and it says "native of the parish". Thanks for the info, I think that was the same place I thought it was. I'm pretty sure I located Nicholas and his family on the Atlas in 1847. His first wife died before 1850. If you don't mind me asking, where did you're Fitzsimons live in the US and when did they come over?

My great, great, great grandfather was Michal Fitzsimmons (the spelling could be wrong) who was born in Dublin, Ireland abt 1801 and his wife's name was Ann who was born abt 1800 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. I don't know her maiden name. Their daughter, Kate was my great, great grandmother and so it goes on. I wonder if this could be the same Michael and Ann that you are looking for?
Hope you enjoyed Christmas in Ireland! I take it that your parents emigrated to the U.S. I checked with my mother about the names - she would have known quite a few of the people you mentioned. We aren't related, but ask your Dad about the Murtaghs of Clondaliever - he would have known them. My father was Joe Murtagh, who died in 1997. My mother would have known a brother of your grandfather quite well - Matt Nolan, who lived in Glenidan. His son, Jack ,is still living there. Of course you may have visited him if you were in ########### which is only a 'hen's run' from Glenidan! Your grandmother on your mother's side must have gone to Fore School where my grandmother, Mrs Nolan (nee Fitzsimons) taught. My mother told me that she taught Beatrice Coffey! Isn't it a small world?
Ann

There were Murtaghs down there - no relation of my own. Now, about the Nolans - can you give some Christian names please and get back with me.
Ann.

Jim, apologies for my tardy repy. I actually sent an e-mail last night, but it was returned to me for some reason. I wanted to talk to my mother before getting back with you. This is really interesting info as I can confirm that my great-grandfather had siblings matching the names that you gave and also the Cooke connection. I don't know what my great great grandfather's Christian name was, but we think it could have been Michael, as the oldest boy in my granny's generation was called Michael. Was there ever any talk of a Patrick back in Ireland I wonder? Did you know anything further about Margaret? My mother attended her grand-aunt Margaret's funeral in NY in 1959. Her age would match your details. She was a Mrs Tremmel. Keep me posted! By the way, the Clonmellon address can be explained by the fact that the births were all registered there.
All the best,
Ann Murtagh

Hi Ann,

I have been following your Fitzsimons in (West)Meath thread with interest.

My ggf was a Simon Patrick Fitzsimmons, born in County Cavan in about 1835. His father was Simon (aka Simie) Fitzsimons, who was married to a Mary Gilroy.

At the time of my ggf's birth they were living in Moutnugent, County Cavan. I do not have any solid information on the Fitz family line before Simon (the younger) being born in 1835 or so. Those records come from his memoirs, which he dictated to his daughter prior to his death.

We know that Simie and Mary, with children James, Simon, Patrick and Mary moved to Thonagh, also in Cavan, before 1850. Mary's family was from that area.

Does any of this sound familiar? I am always excited when I find new reference to a Simon, Simeon or Simie Fitzsim(m)ons.
I have not seen that name very frequently.

My ggf was born in Mountnugent in the 1830's. His father was also a Simon (don't know the middle name). My ggf had an older brother James, a younger brother named Partick (he died in childhood) and a sister Mary.

Simon the older was married to Mary Gilroy, according to the memoirs of the younger Simon.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Fitzsimmons - O'Beirne - Ballard

Looking for any information I can find on my Grandmother, Veronica Fitzsimmons, married to Charles O'Beirne (1922?). She passed a few years before I was born - I think around 1946. "Ronnie", as she was always called, passed rather young, possibly cancer. They had 2 children - John (Jack), my father, and Donna. They owned a 2-flat building at 8721 S. Aberdeen Street in Chicago that they purchased around 1930. I remember hearing that Ronnie was very active assisting the Dominican Sisters of St. Kilian's Church. I have no idea where Veronica came from or who her parents were or if she had any brothers or sisiters. I "think" she may have been related in some way to the Ballard family but can't make a connection. Any fragment of information would be very much appreciated.

I believe that your grandfathers' brother, Bartle, is my grandfather. He was one of 11 children, I believe. My dad, James, tells me so many stories about Ireland and the sad times as well. Bartle married Mary Kate O'Reilly and he had 7 children: Bartholemew, James, Joe, Maureen(died), Gus, Honey, and Oliver.
Dear Phillip, I am researching my great grandparents who came to America around 1863 and 1866. My great grandfather was Charles FitzSimons. I am told he was the oldest of a family who raised horses in County Meath, Ireland. He did not wish to marry the woman chosen for him by his family, so he relinquished his inheritance so he could marry the family servant Margaret Clarke. Around 1863, he came to America first and ended up in Chicago Illinois. Margaret followed in 1866 and they were married around 1870. Please write if you have any information on my FitzSimons family in County Meath, past and present. Thank you.
Greetings, I 've hit a snag. Several years back all of my preliminary research was lost or seriously damaged in a house fire. I am just now able to resume my search. I tried to post earlier today and it did not go through, so I'm trying again now.

I'm searching for my father's side of the family. I have some conflicting dates so I am only posting years here. I would really appreciate any help if these names ring any bells. Thanks.

The Fitzsimmons(??sp.) family supposedly came from TN, NC, SC and GA. Sandy is my grandfather and I know he lived and is buried along with his wife in Dalton, Whitfield Co., GA. I'm told that their parents are buried there also, but cemetery wasn't very helpful with records.

Sandy Fitzsimmons Armstrong, b: 1891 d:1955, m:1914 to Daisey Pearl (Mae ??) I have no solid info and am trying to develop a paper trail. Have yet to locate on a census. Can anyone offer any suggestions or do you recognize this family?

My warmest regards for your kindness,
Dara

sciencelady@voyager.net
Hi. I'm trying to make sense of this information. I'm researching the Meade family. There are several generations with the same names, so birth dates are important. George Meade born 1740, was the son of Robert, and had a sister Catherine, who was married to George Stretch. George Meade, 1740, had a son, George, born 1780, who had a sister Catherine, born in 1769. Can you tell me if this is the Catherine that you say was married to Thomas Fitzsimons? Thanks, Lainey

Well, I looked at the info I had again, and it may make most sense that the Catherine Meade who is the daugher of Robert married Thomas Fitzsimons as a second marriage in 1763. Their birth dates are similar, and I think that makes the most sense. Catherine's brother George was born in 1740. Thanks for the ino! --Lainey

It turned out I was confused about the first marriage! I don't think there was one after all. I didn't realize that Catherine's mother's last name was Stretch, and that's how I got confused. My tree should be correct now, I added the Thomas info at:

www.myfamily.com username AllFamily27 and password is password.

--Lainey

I am looking for any information about F.W. Fitzsimons, a resident of South Africa, likely Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, or the transvaal area. Likely he was born about 1890, and began working as an archaeologist about 1923. He was the author of a four volume natural history of South Africa and other writings. Any information at all appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I am just beginning to research my family branches. My grand mothers family was from Ireland. My great-great Grandmothers names was Ellen Carroll Fitzsimons. She was born July 9, 1826. She had 3 sons that I know of at this point, My great Grandfather Patrick born in1865. There was also a Father William Fitzsimons born Nov 1862, with a twin Brother named Thomas. I have pictures that my Aunt had taken on her last trip to Ireland of the family home, of the cross on the grave of my great-great Grandmothers. I also have a picture of the building that was once a pub owned by the family and is now a news and variety store inthe town of Virginia, count Cavan. I hope to obtain more information in a few days with a visit to my Aunt. If any of this sounds familiar to you, perhaps we have some sort of connection.

Do you know exactly where in County Meath your Charles FitzSimons came from? I have discovered that my own line originated in a small place called Cullintra, Enfield near Rathcore, Meath. I still have a relative there today. My research has hit an extremely tough patch with my great, great grandfather Richard Fitzsimons born 1833, cannot seem to get any further at the moment. Very frustrating!

You might like to contact Patrick and Dorothy Byrne, they have lots of information on Fitzsimons's and others in Meath. The eldest, John, married Elizabeth Murtagh. As far as I know they lived in Clonmellon, Navan,
Co Westmeath. There were 11 in my grandfather's family. I have their names if it would be helpful to you. I'm really interested in learning more about the family. Looking forward to a follow-up message from you.

Ann, I am very interested in any information you may have about Murtagh's in Westmeath Co. I am trying to trace my GG Granmothers family in Ballynaskeagh. Is that near to you? Or known to you? Her name was Bridget Murtagh and she was born @ 1863 in Ballynaskeagh. Her father was William Murtagh, mothers name unknown. In 1884 Bridget married Patrick Murray (also from Ballynaskeagh), at the Catholic Chapel of Delvin, Church of the Assumption.

Any further information you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Maureen

My great-grandmother was Mary Anne FitzSimons from Dublin--she came to the US in the 1880's with her husband, Stephen Howard. Her parents were Joseph FitzSimons and Jane Dunne, both of the Dublin area. How far back have you been able to trace your branch of the family? I understand that the name is Anglo-Norman but don't have much more than that.
Thanks.

Fitzsimons- Westmeath to Kane Co.,IL @1850

My great-greatgrandfather was Nicholas Simons, born about 1815 in Irelend, who came to Kane Co., IL between 1845 and 1850. In 1850 there is a Patrick Simons, born about 1817 and Cady, born about 1844, both born in Ireland just below him on the census. In the 1860 census Patrick is listed as James and Cady as Christopher. On James' tombstown his last name is listed as Fitz Simons, the county he is from in Ireland is listed as Westmeath but the parish is hard to read, it starts with a T, next letter is either u or a and there is a b or an h a few letters down. May have had a sister Ellen, born about 1825, who married Patrick Malone. They came over about 1851. In the 1870 census there is a Michael Simons, born about 1802 in Ireland, living with the Malones. Any info would be appreciated. I also like to hear from cousins.

Great idea, Jackie! We could go for a cup of coffee in the coffee shop in Fore or you could visit my home town of Kells. There's a lovley new heritage centre just opened. Alternatively, I could bring you on a historical tour of Collinstown, if you are into that kind of thing. (I'm sure you've done Fore many times, by now.) Let us know when you are coming to Ireland! Although we are not related, a cousin of mine is married to a cousin of yours. (Matt Kennedy from Drumcree is married to Ann Shaw.) Also, a friend of mine, Catherine Tunney from Kilskyre - her aunt was married to another Kennedy. (Her maiden name was Seery.)
I'ts a small world, isn't it?

-Ann.
P.S. Your Dad might have known my parents.
Dear Ann, thanks for your reply. I don't remember meeting my grandfather Simie, but I have heard nothing but great things about the man. The family hurling traditions carry on as my cousin plays for the county team (i think) and plays in croake (spelling?)park. He was in a big photo in the paper a couple of years ago. I come to Ireland about every 2 years or so maybe we could have coffee sometime. I have been to Fore a couple of times. Thank you so much for your response. Jackie

Hi Jackie!
I didn't know him, but my parents knew him well. He was actually in our house the night before he died. I was talking to my mother since and she said he was a lovely man. We are not related, by the way! One of your uncles is in the home place in Sheepstown, I believe. My mother said that Simie's family were all fantastic hurlers, that they played at local and county level.
All the best,

Ann.

Hi Charlie!

I am not a relative of yours, but I know some of your relatives in Kells, Co.Meath. Frank Fitzsimons who worked for the E.S.B. (Electricity Supply Board) now retired, worked part-time in my father's pub for close on thirty years. He has a brother a priest, Fr Willie Fitzsimons and several othr siblings, as I believe there were 12 or 13 in the family. I think another brother is living in Austria. Their mother Mrs Fitzsimons only died last year. She was in her 90s.
Another co-incidence is that Maureen Fitzsimons was dating a cousin of my Dad's before she went out to the U.S. His name was O'Reilly - he was a dentist in Dublin.

All the best!

Ann.

Hi Rita!
Greetings from the Emerald Isle!
Delighted to read your message. I would say we are distantly connected going on the info. in your message. I've just resurrected some notes I took from my Uncle Peter about ten years ago.My great grandfather Pat Fitzsimons was a son of Michael Fitzsimons who came from Killoughdoran. Michael married a Cooke, supposedly a daughter of a hedge-school teacher. She was left her father's farm in Glenidan(there must've been more money in hedge school teaching than we're led to believe!) and my great, great-grandfather 'married into it' as they say in this part of the world. My great grandfather Pat was the one of the younger family members of a family of we think, ten. He would have been born in the late 1850s. Family names (known): Margaret, Mary Ann, Johnjoe, Michael, Patrick. It was interesting to see the connection with the Murtagh family. As you can see, my own surname is Murtagh. My late father's name was Joe. When my parents were going out, there was a priest from the area called Fr Joe Murtagh, and my mother used to tease my father about having the same name. The funny thing is that she told me tonight that she knew she was related to that priest through the Fitzsimons connection (her mother was a Fitzsimons before she married), but she can't remember where the link was. She is 'phoning my aunt Maisie tonight to see if she can shed any further light on this.
Keep in touch!

Ann.

My advice to you for starters is to find your grandfather Billy's birth certificate. ASk your nan if she has it otherwise you will need to get it from the government office. This will have his parents names on it. Since you are from Dublin, there are scores of Fitzsimons to sort through. I have some possible folks for you to contact if you would like to send me your e-mail address to ZeBest01@msn.com.

Dear Susan:

I do not know if that is a relative of mine, however, it could not be the Bridget I refer to, as Bridget was married in the mid 1700's...it could possibly be one of my great-grandfather's sisters? I do not know, as my research into the Marlow's in Dublin has yielded little data dating before the 1800's. I would love to know more about this family.

If I should find out that indeed I am related to this Bridget, I will contact you; and again, I am thankful for the message.

Yours in Family History,

Meggie Marlowe

I have a cemetary plot receipt from Calvary Cemetary in New York City for a gravesite purchase by a Bridget Marlow on Nov. 4, 1867. My mother's grandmother Mary Towers was buried here also on August 8, 1925, and someone else was buried here October 12, 1920. I have no idea what the connection was between Bridget Marlow and Mary Towers as I have next to no information on my mother's maternal side. If anyone knows anything about this Bridget Marlow please write to me. Thank you

Dear Ann,

My father tells me that when he went on school holidays to Ankerland he used also to sometimes visit the Fitzsimons family at Glenidan.
Dear Ann,

Thank you for your message. Sorry for not replying sooner; I needed to talk with my father, Barthomelew who is the son of Joseph Fitzsimons. His father was the second youngest of the Ankerland family of Fore.

On " Bartle " my Grandfather had a brother called Bartle. His eldest brother, Jack, had an eldest son called Bartle who emigrated to Philidelphia. Unfortunately I think that this Bartle has recently passed away.

It was always an ambition of the Fitzsimons of Ankerland to have school teachers in the family. The youngest female member is a school teacher today. I am an English teacher myself! My grandfather's eldest brother, Tom Fitzsimons, was a school teacher at Delvin for several years before he left to join the British Army during the First World War. It is thought that the school teacher in a famous local novel "The Valley of the Squinting Windows" was based on him.

The family are connected with the Glenidan family. My father tells me that they are his second cousins.

As far as I can make out the ancestral relationship with Oliver Plunkett is on the female side. Most Norman families in the area of the outer Pale were related or closely connected over time.

My father says that you are fortunate to live in such an interesting and picturesque area. I am sure that the Hill of Ben that looks over Fore has many memories. My Grandfather's sister was Molly Fagan who ownded the pub in Fore and she live in the old RIC barracks.

Kindest Regards
Frank Fitzsimons

Hi, Ann. Yes, I was in Collinstown about 9
years ago. Stopped at a little Pub across the street from Lough Lene. Somewhere, I have the name of the parish where my great-grandfather, Christopher, was baptized. I will look it up again. Killoghdoran does not mean anything yet. I have wondered about Fore, but still not sure. Large families must be common among Fitzsimons. My grandfather, William, was one of 11. I was i of 13. (Hence my e-mail address Fitzsimons13
@AOL.com) So you are in Kells??? Do you live in Ireland, or just visiting? (I may be
traveling to Ireland next May)Thanks for the notes.

Hi Frank! I was wondering was your grandfather born in Anchorland, Fore. Have you got a cousin called Bartle?
My granny taught in Fore school for the best part of 40 years and she was also a Fitzsimons before she got married. However, she was from Glenidan and to the best of my knowledge these two families were not related.
I was unaware of the Fitzsimons connection with St. Oliver Plunkett, by the way!
I live quite near Fore and it's one of my favourite places on earth.
Kind regards,
Ann Murtagh

Hello Tom! Greetings from Kells, Co. Meath. My mother and aunts all agree that Michael, Patrick and Thomas are all Fitzsimon names and Christopher is a strong possibility. My great-granddad was born around 1860 and was among the younger family members of a family of eleven, all of whom emigrated. The Kenny connection does not mean anything as such, but my mother says that the name is in the locality.
I'm wondering if this connection is a generation further back. Did the townland Glenidan crop up in your records, by any chance? There also was a Fitzsimons family in Fore which is the same parish as Collinstown. (Have you ever been to Collinstown, by the way?) Also, for what it's worth, my mother always claimed that the family originally came from a place called Killoughdoran. Does this mean anything to you?
All the best, Ann.

Dear Paul:

I believe this is information I would go to Patrick with, to see if it jibes with his...he claims his Thomas cannot be military, he never would have been...my great-grandfather's obituary lists this Thomas Fitzsimon's as his great-grandfather, but, the similarities to Patrick's Thomas are too much to be coincidental...
It is 5:30 a.m. right now (waking up for work and school), and I cannot deal with this yet. However, I believe later tonight I may send a letter to Patrick to check and see where he stands on this...

I will of course, keep you updated on anything I find out...

Yours in history,

Meggie Marlowe

The true and recorded history is that Thomas Fitzsimons emigrated from Dublin to Philadelphia, which is where he lived out the remainder of his life. I don't know about Brooklyn, or Ann, or the brothers, but Thomas Fitzsimons did not come to America until he was an adult. Look it up in Notable American Biographies, and I believe I also found information about him at the NARA site. Here is the address:
http://www.nara.gov/arch/
There always seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the histories of "notable" americans. I for one, would only want to claim him as much as any other individual who was a link to my past.
Let's all try to find out together what Thomas' true past was. Then we will all feel good about at least knowing for sure where we stand -- what say?

Family history from my grandfather confirms Ann as Thomas' sister. According to my records, they were twins. My records also indicate that Ann was the wife of Peter Maitland. Further, Thomas and Ann had at least three brothers, Nicholas, John, and Andrew. While I have no info re Andrew, I have birth/death dates for Nicholas and John. My greatgrandmother,Theresa Louise (Lulu)Fitzsimons, is a direct descendant of John and John Jr.
According to my records, John Jr left Edenderry for Brooklyn, which is where that branch was for many years.

I understand that Thomas Fitzsimons had no relatives in America. However, he did have a few (I think) sons in Ireland; Thomas, when young, married Bridget Marlow, and when their son was little, left her and their child, and went to America. The one of whom I know about was my great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Fitzsimons, Jr. His son was George Fitzsimons, and his son was George Washington Fitzsimons Marlowe. At some point, one of them changed their name to Marlowe. I believe it may have been George Jr, the one I say had the last name Marlowe (which was his mother's maiden name with an added "e"), which I also suspect he may have taken to avoid detection, as he did leave Ireland in a hurry (he was rebellious in Dublin).

When Thomas Fitzsimons arrived in America, he married Catherine Meade, and took up business with her brother, George. He was involved in many business adventures which spurred the beginnings of banking and insurance in this country.

I am not claiming Thomas as my great-great-great-great-grandfather as a matter of pride; leaving your family behind and starting over without thought to your children is not noble; however, he did do some good things with his life, I just wish I could say he was honorable to his children.

I do have some proof building, and plan to find more, but, summer is not conducive to research, especially with a full-time job and three children... I will be more active in my research come the school year... this is all for now...

Meggie Marlowe

Dear Paul:

I think I may know the Dorothy you are talking about...is she from Dublin? I cannot open the page with the address Wayne had in his message, but I have been in contact with Dorothy and her husband from Dublin. I don't want to give too much information on them...that is their option. But, I can say that the information on the Dublin roots I have received so far is largely from them. The theory I am developing is that there was at least one Marlow/Marlowe-Fitzsimons/FitzSimons marriage, maybe two (although Dorothy and her husband acknowledge that Thomas Fitzsimons married a Marlow, they are not sure that this is MY Thomas Fitzsimons). Therefore, looking back on the population of Great Britain and surrounding areas in those days, and the proliferation of consanguineous (blood relatives)marriages at the time, there is a strong possibility that most, if not all Marlow/Marlowe's from that region are related, as well as most, if not all Fitzsimons/Fitzsimmons/FitzSimons/(etc)from that area being related, also. If this is indeed the case (as I strongly believe it is); then there is good cause to believe we are related, however distantly. It all depends on how far back you wish to go...maybe everyone in this message board is related to you!

With that said, I will continue to search for the definitive connection between us, and let you know if I find anything.

Good Hunting!

Meggie Marlowe

Dear Paul:

If you tell me that George was Thomas' grandson, and that his grandmother was (Bridget) Marlow (e), we have a match. I was told that Bridget changed her son, Thomas' last name to Marlow when Thomas Fitzsimons left her...but, who really knows when the last name was changed? Possible that my great-grandfather adopted his great-grandmother's last name when he came into some sort of trouble with the British Bobbies? Theory, guesswork, no data to put the story together yet...

The story on Thomas I have received from Dublin shows more than one son... I do not know all the details...but, our George had to be born later than 1760, because Thomas Fitzsimons was born in 1741, and so his son Thomas could not have had a son until at least around 1775 or more. Unless he had another son, who was named George, in which case that would have made our relatives cousins, and us cousins lots of times removed (or something like that.) I am going to print your e-mail, so that I can see what I can find out. If there is anything (one of us is wrong, both of us are wrong, one of us is right, or, we are cousins), I will write to you and let you know.

Thanks for the reply. I am seeking to find the truth behind the stories past down...we shall see as we go what turns up.

Yours in history, and possible family,

Meggie Marlowe

George Fitzsimons - 1858 Wisconsin

First thanks to Frank and Beth for their latest messages. Our family vacation, three brothers and myself with family are putting together a fund to travel perhaps to Ireland...and these would be great spots to visit.
My Fitzsimons roots are as follows:
ggrandfather George Fitzsimons born in Wisconsin 1858, the son of William Fitzsimons and Jane Edmondston born in Ireland. George married Agnes Ward in Nebraska circa 1884 and there first child was Lula Jane [who lived to be 103] The rest of their children were born in Kansas and California: Frank E., Orrin Willard, Raymond E., Walter George, and Vera Allma.
Love to exchange information. connie
ConPutnam@aol.com

When your family members get to Fore, stop by at the pub. Its owner Beatrice Fagin is a Fitzsimons by birth too. They, alongside the Fore Branch, own most of the land thereabouts. She will tell you everything that you need to know. All about the IRA days and before.
My Grandfather's brother was an intelligence officer who served in the British Army in WW1. Apparently he fought in Arabia with the famous Lawrence. When the brother got home he trained the local IRA. He ended up as a school teacher in Ampleforth, England. Earlier he had taught my Grandfather and was known as a very strict teacher. He is the teacher in the local novel, well known in Ireland, called " The Valley of the Squinting Windows". When you see Beatrice tell her that my father is Barthomelew the son of Captain Joe from Mullingar. Joe was in fact a younger son born at Fore.

My father told me that when he visited Fore in the 1940s they still had a few plates with crests of arms on them. He also tells me that there is an ancient Norman burial place no bigger than two rooms in a field at Fore which no one disturbs. It is known as "The Garden". The family lost a little land during Cromwellian times due to their remaining Catholic. My father went to Rome in 1975 for the canonisation of Oliver Plunkett. I can't remember relationship exactly but his mother or his grandmother was a Fitzsimons. ( I can establish the exactness of this if you want ). Anyway it was enough to get an invite. Michael Collins's secretary was also a Fitzsimons before she married ( Anna ). But I don't think that she was closely related to the Fore Branch though.
Regards, Frank

family name

Hello Gary ! An important branch of the family held land in Fore, County Meath sometime after the Norman Invasion. Three Fitzsimons called Edmund became abbots at Fore in the fourteenth century. They gave more land to their own family. Fore was fortified against the Irish. So the family had a military role. I also know that an important branch ( probably the originators of the Meath branch ) held a royal castle from Henry II at Church Stretton along the Welsh Border in Shropshire. It seems that the family liked living along borders for the opportunities which could come from them. A member of the Shropshire branch, Robert, is claimed by academics to have saved the life of the Black Prince at the battle of Crecy. Robert held the standard and later, with the Prince, certainly became one of the founder members of the Knights of the Order of the Garter. The family still holds its lands at Fore. The ruins of the Abbey are interesting. There are said to be seven wonders on the land. One, for instance, is a hill on which cars and carts roll up! Another is water which will not boil! Hope this helps somewhat. Frank

Thanks, Wayne, sorry it took me so long to reply. I will definitely be checking out the sites you posted. Looking in my files, I don't see a James. Family tradition holds that my ancestors came from County Cork, primarily, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

If you are interested, my Website has a descendant tree showing what I do have for the Fitzsimons/Fitzsimmons surname, at http://www.geocities.com/bpstratton/fitzsimons.html.

If I run across your James, I will let you know.

My great great grandmother was Mary Fitzsimons, born 1852 in Virginia, County Cavan. Came to U.S. in 1870. Cavan had a population of over 250,000 then, but who knows, there may be a connection. She had a sister Kate who, as far as we know, lived until about 1925 in nearby Lisduff.

Michael Fitzsimons(c.1858) married Margaret Burns/Byrnes

My g.g.grandfather Michael Fitzsimons married Margaret Burns/Byrnes in Ireland sometime around 1880. They had the following children:
Mary Ann (k/aNance) (1882) born in Ireland
Margaret (k/aMaggie) (1884) born in Sunderland, Co. Durham, England
James J (1886) born in Ireland
Henry (1888) born in Ireland
Bridget (k/a Biddy) (1890) born in Sunderland
Catherine (k/aKitty) (1892) born in Sunderland
Susan (k/a Susie) (1894) born in Sunderland
Elizabeth (k/a Lizzie)(place and date of birth unknown)

My late great-uncle, George Stace, had been to Ireland to visit relatives of Michael and Margaret but unfortunately no-one living now knows where he went. Some relatives also visited the family in Sunderland and took photographs back with them to Ireland of the above family - including one of my great-grandmother Bridget and her sisters with rags in their braided hair.

I know this is a long-shot but has anyone any memories of any of this and can give me some assistance. I have looked at the indexes but cannot find a marriage.

Kindest regards,
Janet

I am in possession of a letter from the above to her brother, either my Ggrandfather Albert Alfred Fitzsimmons or his son, my Grandfather Harold Fitzsimmons. It is dated April 7, 1927. It is written on the stationary of Arthur Stewart,2970 Sheridan Rd. Chicago.
The letter is about the death of a brother, possibly Jim or Mim. I can't quite make out the writing too well. He died on March 28, 1927. He suffered from heat prostration and became more and more feeble. Apparently he had been living with a sister, Anne and Billy in LeSalle (? don't know where that is). He was buried with his parents in LeSalle. Any ideas on family, cemetary?
My Albert and his son Harold, lived in the Kansas City, Missouri area. They came from Illinois and some lived in Washington State. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This letter is my only link....
Thanks so much,
Patty Van Fleet
patty@kc.net
Richard Fitzsimons married Mary Elizabeth Bradley, they had four sons John, Michael, Richard and Robert. John Fitzsimons one of his sons married Rose McCann on 15-8-1897 in Longwood County Meath. Rose McCann was 19 at the time of the marriage and John was 20. She was the daughter of John McCann and Kathleen Tyrrall. She had a sister Veronica who married Patrick Doherty.
John Fitzsimons and Rose McCann had 10 children: James, John Christopher, Denis,Kathleen, Martha, Vera, Winnie, Agnes, Anthony and Mary.
Some of these were born in Wales and some in County Meath. We have lots more on this family and it was all compiled by Dorothy and Patrick Drayton-Byrne.
John Fitzsimons and his wife, Mary O'Doherty arrived in Melbourne Australia, 15-Jan-1841.
They came from Co.Meath. John's parents were John and Rose Cloyne and Mary's parents were Henry O'Doherty and Ellen Cloyne.

John Mary took up dairy farming at Templestowe, Victoria. They names their property "Summerhill". I have visited Summerhill in Co.Meath with no luck.

The unusual name of "CLOYNE" in both families should help to pinpoint them, but Cloyne is an unusual and elusive name.

John and Mary must have had siblings. Ring any bells with anyone.

Even the slightest of hunches will be appreciated, as research has been at a standstill for 15 tears.

I have found no records of whether Ellen came to the US with her parents or other relatives (at age 11, dont think she came alone) Oral history says John Gordon met her on the ship, but I havent found any ship manifest that lists either one. I think I failed to mention that I also found a drawing picture of Thomas that was published in an article titled Irish-American signers of the Constitution. There is a hand written date of Sept 1822 under the title. I also read that he was president of the Chamber of Commerce and President of the Insurance Company of North America at the time of his death. I also found a reference to his papers having been aquired by the Dreer collection.
Got to go for now
Paul

My father's family also comes from Kells although his parents were both born in Trim. My father is Joseph Oliver Fitzsimons, one of 13 children. They lived in a house called Ard Na Greine on Headfort Road. His father was Francis and he was a tea salesman. His mother was Rose Daly. Dad was born in 1920 and he left Kells in 1939. His brother Frank was the only one to stay in Kells. Frankie's wife Nancy taught music. Another brother Jimmy ran pubs in Dublin. Four of the brothers came to Australia. Can anyone tell me any more about Francis and Rose?
Maureen

Jackie, I know the Fitzsimons in Clonmellon. I was in Ireland in May 1997. I stayed with a Fitzsimons cousin in Dublin whose grandfather and my grandfather were brothers and came from Delvin, Westmeath. Her brother has the pub in Clonmellon. I stayed a night with the family there.
Incidentally it was Elizabeth Murtagh who married John Fitzsimons who are the grandparents of the Fitzsimons in Clonmellon. Can you follow this? I'm going to be in Ireland in May this year and am looking forward to connecting with this family again. Ann, I presume you'll read this message?

Dear Jackie, the John Fitzsimons who married Elizabeth Murtagh was born in the mid 1800's. His brother Terence was my grandfather born in 1848 and came to New Zealand in 1875. Their parents were Patrick and Catherine (Callery). I'd be glad if you would share your ancestry as I feel there could be a connection.

Micheal was born in 1809 in Down Co.or Dublin (Not sure) brother of Patrick and Thomas, he was married to Catherine Gahan Duffy, then they emigrated to Argentina . I couldn't find their parents names, so I got lost!! and I couldn't follow our genealogy back in Ireland. Please, I'll be more than happy for any help or suggestions of where to look or investigate. Thanks in advance. Brian

Mary Ann Fitzsimons married John Henderson in Glasgow, Scotland, on 6th February, 1883

I am the granddaughter of John Henderson, from his second marriage, to Joann McDougall in Victoria Australia, but I would like to hear from descendants of the son grandpa Henderson had from his first marriage to Mary Ann Fitzsimons. The child was also called John, was born 5th February,1884--one day before his parents first wedding anniversary!! He would have been a half brother to my father his siblings, a (half?) uncle to me!! None of the family in Australia (that are still alive anyway), know anything about John JNR. I know he lived at least to 16years as he was listed on my aunt's birth certificate as her father's issue from a previous marriage. I believe he was cared for by his maternal grandparents after his mother's death (29/08/1900). Their names were Thomas Fitzsimons Mary Ann Gallacher/Gallagher they also lived in Glasgow, Scotland but were both born in Ireland I believe. If you know about young John Henderson or his Fitzsimons relatives, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me on nette_50@hotmail.com Jeanette Bonnici (nee Henderson).

Thomas Fitzsimons wife Mary Ann Gallacher/Gallagher lived in Glasgow, Scotland in mid 1800s

Thomas Mary Ann Fitzsimons are the parents of my grandfather's first wife. Her name was also Mary Ann she married John Henderson (born in Paisley 1855) in Glasgow on 6th February, 1883. They had a son born 5th February, 1884. He was called John after his father. Mary Ann died 29/08/1900 young John was cared for by his maternal grandparents (Thomas Mary Ann Fitzsimons). My grandfather went to Australia remarried but the only knowledge we have of young John Henderson, after that, is on my aunt's birth certificate, where he is noted as a 16 year old issue from his first marriage. As he was my father's(unknown) half brother my uncle I am very keen to learn all I can about him hopefully his descendants!! If you can help me please feel free to email me on nette_50@hotmail.com Jeanette Bonnici (nee Henderson).
