I, too, am descended from Nancy Jane Baker. I found that out recently, since I have just started researching the family tree. Nancy had a daughter, Sarah Arlinda Flatbush, with Stephen Flatbush (aka many names). Sarah is my great grandmother and married Samuel D. King. They had a daughter named Hazel, who was my grandmother. If you want the King/Crown family history, I could fill you in on that. Which King are you descended from? Also, if you have any information about Sarah or Nancy, I'd love it. Thank you. Please email me at jennifer@chase3000.com

Yes, the information that your mother gave you is correct to the best of my knowledge. I know there were definately 6 wives but, was aware of the other possible two. Actually, the first wife died prior to him marrying the second (no children). Also, he possibly fought on both sides of the Civil War at different times. There is a site somewhere, I'll look it up and get back to you that gives pretty much his entire story. The wife that is my ancestor was Ada May Watson. Yes, the cemetery info is correct and I hope to go there sometime in the future and get a picture of the tombstone. I live in Arkansas so, it's not too far away. His birth name was Staats Barton Flandreau. He had several aliases. By the time he got to Ada, his name was Alexander Theodore Flatbush. I think for you, it was Stephen?? The site, if you want to go huntung is under the Flandreau name. Please contact me at Familytreeclimber@Yahoo.com.
My mother has just presented me with a lot of geneological data, and Mr. Flandreau appears in my family tree also. According to our information, Mr. Flandreau had 8 wives and divorced none of them. I am descended from wife #4 (Nancy Jane Baker). My mom got a copy of his death certificate, and found out that he died in Fort Levenworth, Ks on Feb 16, 1922. He is buried in the Old Soldier cemetary under the name Flandreau.

I don't know where she got most of her information.

I am looking to hear from anyone with the last name of Flatbush. We are all related to States Barton Flandreau who changed his name SEVERAL times. States was born in New Rochelle, NY on February 19, 1842 and died in KS on February 16, 1922.

In 1860, he married Ann Alzerrith (?-1862) in VA.

Then around 1863 in PA, he married my gggrandmother, Elizabeth Seidel (March 26, 1842 PA to March 18, 1921 MO). They had 5 children: George Flatbush (1864 PA to ?), Anna Flatbush (1868 IL to ?), Hardy Royal Flatbush (March 28, 1870 MO to January 20, 1947), Nellie Mae Flatbush (1873 NO to September 16, 1939) and Walter B. Flatbush (August 17, 1883 MO to March 29, 1920). While still married to Elizabeth Seidel he married the following women:

Elizabeth Carolyn Underhill (? to November 5, 1911 New Rochelle, NY) married States on September 27, 1864 in New Rochelle, NY. They had 3 children: Viola May Flandreau (June 8, 1865 to September 30, 1942); Walter Flandreau (December 28, 1868 to ?); daughter Flandreau.

States (using Flatbush as a last name) married Nacy Jane Baker in 1868 in Indiana. They had May Elmira Flatbush (December 7, 1868 to July 21, 1895)and Sarah Arlinda Flatbush (August 28, 1870 to March 19, 1923).

States, using the last name of Flatbush, married Addie May Watson (May 1, 1855 to October 19, 1900)in 1876 in Nebrasbra. They had two sons: Frank Emerson Flatbush (September 28, 1877 to October 23, 1940) and Charles Wesley Flatbush (1878 to 1878).

States, using the last name of Barnes, married Sarah T. Barnes on January 31, 1883 in Danville, IL. They had one son, Walter Barnes (1885 to ?)

States married Elizabeth Cash (September 22, 1851 to ?) on March 29, 1891 in Kirkwood, MO.
Sherry-

I am so confused by this man!! I have him in my
genealogy as Stephen Flatbush, but the 1870 census
of Omaha, NE lists a Thomas Flatbush. I also know there
was an Alexander Stephen, an Alexander Theodor, and
a Theodor. Are these all the same man?? Our family story
tells that Stephen Flatbush, artist, teacher, and preacher
disappeared in 1870 in Elkhorn, NE, supposedly
a victim of thieves. How did he live in Omaha so close
to Nancy Jane and hide himself. Also he died in Kansas, and his
daughter Sarah Arlinda lived in Kansas. I wonder
if they knew he was alive, and just made up his disappearance
for some reason. His wife, Nancy Jane, then remarried
in 1874 to Henry Miller, but Stephen Flatbush (States) would
have still been alive. This is very, very strange. His daughter
Nancy Jane died in 1879, so May was adopted by the Blackwell? family,
and Sarah Arlinda was raised by her uncle Caleb Baker, all while their
father still lived?! I am dumbfounded by this, and yet I always
had an instinct, something telling me he never really disappeared. It
certainly explains some things, like why Stephen Flatbush, though
a Civil War veteran is not listed in any muster rolls while
States Flandreau is. Can you help sort out any of the confusion as to
his legacy with the Baker family, why he continued living so
near to them after his supposed disappearance, and why he wouldn't have
raised May and Sarah? Thanks so much for breaking this all open and giving me
some answers!

Jill Stinson

Flatbush/Flandreau

Supposedly, all Flatbush lines in the United States are descendents of one man. His name is Staats Barton Flandreau. I found this out after I had been researching my genealogy for Frank Emerson Flatbush and his father, Alexander Theodore Flatbush. One of my great uncles, Frank Watson Flatbush told me early on that somewhere in the Flatbush ancestry, there had been someone whose original surname was Flandreau. He had come from Flatbush NY. A family argument occured and he left the family, changed his name to Flatbush ergo, the surname Flatbush. It turns out according to Clark, that the family argument was just that Staats got itchy feet. He had a total of six wives, five of them at the same time. He averaged abt two children per wife. With each wife, he changed his name to some extent.
