That was not a very subtle hint Debbie ! :) !
Did Don quit?
When I get back I just might look into it but I haven't the slighest guess as to what all is involved in being an admin.
I do belong to the Peterson DNA and what struck me the last time I was at Flatt is there is no relationship of lineages to the DNA results like they have at the Peterson. But I'll look at it more closely when I'm back.
Sincerely,
Mike
and (hint, Mike, that project could use an administrator, I believe)
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/flattfleetvliet/default....
Basically, I wanted to test the theory of whether Van Vliet was the surname of origin and been changed to Flat. You can see that the haplogroup or major area of origin for given people, are distinct. The descendants of Gerritt Van Vliet are I1 haplogroup. The Flat/Flatt who were in NJ/PA/KY/TN/IL/TX are the ones in group R1a-notice that there are 3 Fletts from Orkney Island Scotland. The Flat from Methwold UK is in haplogroup I2, distinctive from the US eastern seaboard Flatts.
DNA is simply amazing for being able to sort out the relationships. Now, one thing that cannot be determined at this point is whether there was one common Flatt ancestor, say, for the ones in the east.
User ID "dinopete" here. I'm Mike "Dino" Peterson. Some things have changed since my Sep. 19, 2009 note thanks to the great research by Leslie Flatt. I don't know if any of that research is on this board. However, I cannot comment specifically on the notes because I am not at home and won't be until mid-May where all my notes and research are.
Also, I think the DNA project has some new information but I haven't had a chance to re-study that info. Debbie Harper turned the DNA project over to Don Flatt and I haven't had a chance to really study it since then.
I have seen data on Heyhow Flatt before but again, I'm not where my data is.
Sincerely,
Mike "Dino" Peterson

On this surname board on Sept. 19, 2009, there is a query from "dinopete" who is descended from your Joseph. My great grandmother was Jemima Flatt, b. 1831 Stoke Ferry, Methwold, to Robert and Elizabeth(Hewen?)Flatt. Her brothers and sisters were William Henry, Betsy, Robert, Susan, Lucy, Mary and Emma. She ended up marrying the Rev. John Kingdon and went to live in Jamaica, where she died in 1911. I think her grandparents were William (1758-1819)and Ann Rolfe Flatt (1764-1846) in Methwold. Could there be any link with your line? Carol Pearn Dent

My Great Grandfather, Sylvester Flatt was said to have a mother Louisa Halftown, of the Cornplanter Nation. They lived in Corydon Pennsylvania and my mother remembers her uncle speaking Indian. I have had no luck in documenting any of this. I did find that he was married to Celia Lyle. I found one Flatt from our tree lived in New Jersey; one son went to Tennessee and the other to Pennsylvania, back in the 1700's.
I too have always thought there was a strong likelihood that our line has Native American but no proof as yet.

My 3rd great granpaw (my mothers line) was Sampson Flatt b. 1847 in Jackson County,TN died 1907 in russell county, KY. He married Martha Ann Smith. Seeing he was born in Jackson County, his parents resided there. There are no records found about his parents or grandparents, just census records of Sampson and his wife Martha. I read up on the history of Jackson County in the early days, and said the first settlers were Cherokee Indians and there were marked "indian lands." My mother, her father (my grandfather) and her grandmother all mentioned there was Indian decent in that Flatt family line. Im wondering if there are any records or any info about it. Im curious to find out. email me at hbasham1@insightbb.com

Re: Flatt DNA Project- Flatts from TN/KY/PA/IL etc are definitely SCOTTISH

Short answer: Had the Flatt/Van Vliet surname project just to test the theory. Almost all the Flatts from NJ/PA/TN/KY/IL/ match. They also match FLETT from Orkney Islands. Had 3 Van Vliets that were descendants of Derck Vandervliet. Not even the same haplogroup (area of the world where the lines originate). Here is the chart at FTDNA
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/flattfleetvliet/default....
The Vliets are either E1b or I1; Derkcs are E1b The Flatt/Fletts are R1a in that list. John Flatt of NJ who went to IL fits in this, as do the MD, TN and KY Flatts, as well as Andrew Flatt of Pa. Could not find one common ancestor, despite years of digging, so possibly could have been Flatt/Flett coming at different times.
ANyway, DNA debunked the story of the Spotted Cow which my third cousin swore by. Just Not True.
P.S. You'll see some R1b Flatts on there. One was Slavic, one was Flatts from Norfolk ENG.
My grandmother, Mary Jeanette "Nettie" Flatt always claimed her mother was half-Indian, but of course that would be on the other side of the family. Maybe she was wrong and the heritage came from her father's side. Anyway, the outlaw thing sounds right!

Though I am not sure 'my' Flatt family is connected, I take every opportunity to put in my 2 cents. I am looking for Delia Ann FLATT who was born about 1830. She is in Sussex County, NJ in the 1850 census married to Hiram CHAMBERLAIN. She is head of he household (no Hiram in sight) in the 1860 census (still in Sussex Co, NJ). By the 1870 census she is married to Jeptha Dence/Denee - still in Sussex Co, NJ.

It's good to hear from you again. I am slowly reviewing branches of the Blair family again and have gotten to the Flatts. I had some information that I had not been able to connect to Jonathan Flatt but was able to fit a number of puzzle pieces together in order to prove that he was the same Jonathan in the 1881 Census in Mono Twp. and in the 1891 Census in Caledon Twp. I found a few more birth records for his children that confirmed I had the right family. I found Cecil as well but had not followed up on it yet. Thanks for clarifying who he was. I could not find your email address in records but know that you have mine as I had an email from you at Christmas. Please contact me directly if you would like to look over the revised Flatt family history when you are home again.

Hi Fred,
is this the Fred Blair who has done so much research on the Jonathan Flatt family in Canada? If so, this is Dino, and in my first response I didn't even look at the poster name. He indeed is the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth. Dalton became a minister and true to Flatt form he appears to have gone by D. Cecil Flatt, a minister. His obituary is on findagrave.com at - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fl...; -
Take care,
Dino

The birth date of 1889 for Dalton seems a little late for Jonathan and Elizabeth although not impossible. Their first four children were born between 1869 and 1873. I've done a lot of research on this lineage and this is the first time the name Dalton is seen by me. I will do some research and see what I can find and hopefully will help to break down this brick wall for you. A big problem with the Canadian Flatts is they seemed to love not using their given names and instead used middle names or nick-names. I'm traveling right now so don't have access to all my sources but will keep you posted, especially if I find anything.
Sincerely,
Mike Peterson

I was just looking at the photos on ancestry of Sarah Ann Brown and Isaac Flatt and of John Madison Flatt and his wife. And I believe Mary Elzabeth Flatt. The women look native american and I was wondering if there is stories about that in tennessee. I'm a Flatt descended directly from that line and I would like to know some of the verbal history. All my Grandpa Flatt's kids and grandkids thought he was Indian but after doing a family tree all names are pretty much scotch/irish and english names.. Just seeing if there is anymore flatt stories from this line.. I know were all outlaws.JK..

Flatt's

Ok, I'm Brian Flatt, my father was Curtis Flatt whose father was Norvel Benford Flatt from Kentucky(Ashland?). His father was Benjamin Franklin Flatt. I know a bunch of names after that, found here on ancestry but I know next to nothing about my Flatt heritage. You see, Norvel moved down to Tampa in the 1940's with my grandmother, Rose Griffith, and they had 2 daughters and a son, my father. The daughters are Judy and Donna. Norvel and my grandmother got divorced eventually and Norvel was remarried and had other children, Bart being a son. Because of the move to Florida and subsequent divorce, the Florida Flatt's became estranged from the Kentucky family and I would like to get back in touch with anyone I can and to learn all I can. I currently live in Knoxville TN so not too far from Ashland or Jackson county TN. I can be reached at bflatt72@gmail.com
I would love to hear from anyone.
Thanks
Brian Flatt

My gr8 grandmother was Iva Estelle Flatt and her Grandfather was William Sampson Flatt from TN married to Martha A Smith. Which would make them my 3 gr8 grandparents, I can't go any further than William and would love to know who he came from, and what his heritage is. Anyone with info on him, let me know email me at hbasham1@insightbb.com thanks
