My Grandmother was just Mrytie Jane Fleet married to Pearly Mitchell Daffern. They lived in Texas and Oklahoma during the 1906 to 1916 time period. This doesn't sound like your Myrtie Fleet?? Good Luck with your search! Trish Mc.Connell.

Your recent post states that your Grandmother was Myrtie Fleet. Is Fleet her maiden name? My Myrtie is Myrtie ALSTON that married George Elliott FLEET. My Myrtie had only one son, James Lee Fleet. Is that your father's name? Thanks.

Also Rachel seems to marry in 2Q 1864 (Bedwelty 11a 146) to John Hanson. The marriage cert may give details of an address and whether the father is alive at that date. So far, the parents do seem to be elusive in 1861 census!

Thanks for replying. I was looking for George Fleet parents in the census. They were George born 1816 in Keele Staffs and Mary (nee Plaister) born 1820 Forest of Dean. I found them on the 1851 census but I failed to find them after. Sorry if I put you on the track of the wrong George! Once again thanks for replying.

Richard Fleet b 1597 Hardwick Buckinghamshire

A lot (17) of Ancestry Public Member trees and 8 Genes Reunited trees give this Richard Fleet's birth as 1597.

Obviously many of these are copies of each other - but could anyone who has seen the evidence let me know? I ask as I have found nothing at the LDS index or from the local FHS. Some also mention his father's, another Richard's birth in 1560. Any info on that?

Richard

FLEET & COOPER 1600s-1700s Family Connection?

My farthest back confirmed ancestor was FLEET Cooper, Sr., 1721-1795, late of Sampson County, NC. He came to NC from VA. Due to the uncommon given name, it has always been our belief that there were FLEETs, either related to him or esteemed by his family, that resulted in his given name that was used over and over in naming descendants even until the present day. The following information lends credance to our theory:

Virginia patents and grants, as well as several other records suggest that a Fleet COOPER, most likely was born in southeastern Virginia. It could be that he was the same Fleet COOPER of Nansemond County, VA, who sold land along the Blackwater River on 9 Mar 1757 which he purchased in Feb 1745. Thee also is record of a Fleet COOPER living in Elizabeth City County, VA, who was fined by the Court 19 February 1718 for failing to attend church. Also in Elizabeth City County a Fleet COOPER witnessed the will of Robert BRIGHT on 19 Jan 1723/23. In 1645 or 1646 the SW portion of Elizabeth City County became Nansemond County. Possibly these two Fleet COOPERs living fairly close related. Earlier Virginia records link the "widow FLEET" and a Jno. COOPER and his wife as grantors in a 1675 Gloucester County deed. This indicates a possible FLEET and COOPER connection. Other York County, VA, records indicate connections between a widow, Anne FLEETE, and John COOPER, her attorney. These documents were recorded between 1665 and 1672.

Does anyone out there have any further information that my help us with our
theory?

Regards,
Gary W. Cooper
Dawson, GA

Hi Nick

As my previous reply we have actually been in contact via GR- and direct email addresses.

We think that your great grandad Richard may be our great great grandad- our great grandad is William Henry Fleet- his father being called Richard. We had a got a bit mixed up and thought that Alice and William were siblings- so thank you for clarifying that for us.

If you have any photos or memorobilia of either Fred or Alice that you could scan and email to me that would be greatly appreciated. I guess we'll never find out about Fred's father! I wonder why all the bios about him - say he and Eva never had any children?

Regards

Julie Gregory (nee Fleet)

Hello! I am looking for any data on ancestors of Charles D Fleet. He was my grandfather who died in February 1977, same month as my uncle - his son Charles R Fleet. I never met either of them, they both died around when my father (Roy Lynn Fleet) and mother got married.

Hi Nick- You and I have already made contact through genes reunited.
It seems on this occassion we have enlightened each other!
I wonder why all the bios on Fred state that he and Eva never had children?
Doeas anyone know anything about Fred's father? Do you thnk Fred's father knew he wa a father? I wondered if he had goneon his merry way before Alice found out that she was pregnant?
My great grandafather is William Henry Fleet , my grandad Alfred Fleet- I have not yet been able to find out if my grandad in fact had any siblings, nor who his Mum was. I do know that Great grandad although born in Liverpool, married in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire.

Did you know that the headstone that was erected for Fred in 1993 (afer all those years in a 'paupers' grave) was from Titanic Historical Society, Indian Orchard, Masachussetts? Soemone ther must have known about Alice being Fred's mum nece the Masachussets connection.

So Fred must have always been on Alice's mind if she gave Dorothy the middle name of Frederica. I feel for Alice- she must have beem a very scared vulnerable young woman.

Wer have still not yet figured out where Fred and Alice's branches sit on our tree but other rels (since deceased have told us all the way thorugh that we are related just not how!) Do you have any info on Alice's parents?

I see from my research that it appears Alice came back to Uk and settled in Burnely as a Mill worker- her death is registerd in the Burnely register. She was about 85 when she died.
Do you know when Dorothy and Michael married and where/ Did they have any children.

You ans I MUST be relaed somehow and had I been born a boy I was going to be caleed Simon Nicholas Fleet!

Thanks, Julie, for that post! It adds some very helpful information. I had traced Alice's arrival in Boston but could not find anything further, as yet. Actually, Fred and Eva did have a daughter, Dorothy Fredrica Eva, who married a Michael Shanley. My great-grandfather, Richard, was Alice's brother. He had in his possesion a photo of a young woman taken in Springfield, Mass. I have assumed it is Alice but cannot yet prove it!

Nick Fleet, Tunbrdge Wells, UK

Frederick Fleet Liverpool 15 10 1887

Hi

I am a descendant of Fredewrick Fleet- we (the Fleet family) have not yet on which branch of the tree that Frederick Fleet ( nightwatchman/lifeboat operator HMS Titanic) is as yet- but it is still work in progress.

He was bornout of "wedlock', never knew his father and when he was 5, his Mother Alice Fleet set sail from Liverpool England heading to the porty of Boston to start a new life in Springfield, Masachussets,USA with her boyfriend of that time (not Freds father). She ws 21 , meaning that she was just 16 when she had Fred- so did she really abondon him or was she 'sent" away? It appears that she married the boyfriend that she went to USA with- a William Burnett, they married 3 years after arriving in Springfield, they had a daughter born that year- Elizabeth Burnett.
Fred Fleet sailed back to England in May 1912 after the tragedy of the Titanic- and worked odd jobs including being a newspaper seller but also worked in the shipbuilding industry- either Liverpool and/or Southampton. Sadly he ws brought up in orphanages and foster homes, started on ths ships as a 12 year old deck hand and got 'trained up" to be an abel seaman. His only true feeling of accpetance and unconditional love was with his wife Eva, so understandably he was distraught when she died- probaly along with the grief of his wifes death and the post traumatic stress of what happened on the Titanic and probably feleing guilty becuase he survived and then his brother in law evicting him soon afet his wifes death- you can understand why he wanted to end it all. he hung himself on the washing line in his brother in laws garden. he ws buried in a "paupers" grave in Southanpton with the Titanic society erecting a memorial headstone in his honpur in 1993. He and Eva never had any children. Fred was about 8- when he died. Alice came back to England, was amill worker and her death is registered in Burnley, UK. Hope this clarifys a few things for a few people.
Julie Gregory ( nee Fleet)

Hi

I am also researching Fleets from Buckinghamshire and getting nowhere. My great great grandfather John Fleet was born C1843 in buckinghamshire according to the 1911 Census. I have been unable to find them anywhere else on any other census. According to the 1911 Census they had 7 Children 2 of which died, and John has been married to Hannah Wyles formerly Wright for 42 years, but I have not found their marriage. I have so far only found 2, one is Ellen Fleet born C1880 who married a Henry Vango, and my great grandmother Christina Fleet. Both children were born in Islington (Holloway). I have Christina's birth cert but have so far not found a birth cert for Ellen. I stumbled across her when I found Hannahs death cert. John Fleet died in 1914 in West Ham, Essex and his wife Hannah died a few years later in 1918 also in West Ham. John is a retired Labourer in the 1911 and a builders labourer when my great grandmother Christina was born in 1889.
If anyone can help would be so so grateful, and if I can help anyone please let me know.

Best wishes
Tracie Fleet.

Charles Brown and his wife Priscilla Brooke of MD had Bennett Browne (who migrated to Essex Co., VA and married Mary Hill, a daughter of Leonard Hill, in 1775). Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne's daughter Sarah Browne married William Christopher Fleet (he had previously been married to a Miss Tomlin, apparently), and some "Fleet descendants" of this couple had "Bennett" and/or "Brown/Browne" as a given first or middle name. Bennett Browne (died around the late-1780s in Essex Co., VA and left a will) received his given name because Pricilla Brooke's grandaunt (a Miss Neale) married Richard Bennett, Jr., who was a son of Colonial Governor Richard Bennett, Sr. of Virginia.

It appears that a sister of William Christopher Fleet named Ann Nancy Fleet married Christopher Tompkins. Their apparent daughter Ann Fleet Tompkins married Charles Browne, and Charles (born 1777) was apparently the known son with that given name of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne. This Charles Browne fathered a son named Christopher Tompkins Browne/Brown, and Christopher married a Juliet Garnett. One of Christopher's children was named Ann Temple Nannie Brown. The name "Temple" apparently came from the Ann Temple who was one of the two wives of William Fleet, Jr., who was a son of William Fleet, Sr, and his wife Sarah Ann Jones. The other wife of William Fleet, Jr. was Susannah Walker.

Comments/questions?

Re: FLEET, England>VA

Per another researcher, William Christopher Fleet, a son of William Fleet, Junior and either his first wife Ann Temple or his second wife Susannah Walker (which mother is correct for William Christopher Fleet?), had a sister named Ann Nancy Fleet (not to be confused with the other sister named Mary Ann Fleet who married a Mr. Pendleton, as I recall). Ann Nancy Fleet married Christopher Tompkins/Tomkins (born about 1739), and their daughter (almost certainly), Ann(e) Fleet Tompkins, married Charles Browne (born 1777). Charles Browne was almost certainly the known son with that name of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne (who married in 1775; Mary Hill was a daughter of a Leonard Hill), and hence, this Charles Browne was almost certainly a brother of the Sarah Browne (a KNOWN daughter of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne) who was the second wife of William Christopher Fleet.

Charles and Ann(e) Fleet (Tompkins) Browne had a son who was named Christopher Tompkins Browne (shown on censuses as "Brown"....Christopher married a Miss Garnett). One of Christopher T. Brown's daughters was named Ann Temple Nannie Brown(e)....so that "Temple" middle name seems to "solidify" that Christopher T. Browne was very likely a descendant on Mrs. Ann (Temple) Fleet, as shown herein. Christopher Tompkins Brown was on the 1830 census in Essex Co., VA and then on the 1840 census in "next-door" Middlesex Co., VA. The parents of Bennett Browne were the wealthy Charles and Priscilla (Brooke) Browne of MD.

There was a male in Christopher T. Brown's home in Middlesex Co., VA in 1840, per the census, who was in the correct age range to have been my maternal gg-grandfather, Smith W. Brown (and Christopher was the ONLY Brown shown by name on that entire 1840 Middlesex census). DNA testing on living male descendants has shown, however, that Smith W. Brown (born about 1817) was actually a "blood Smith" versus a "blood Brown." I believe that Smith W. Brown was a "Smith infant/toddler" who was taken-in and renamed by John and Mary (Bennett) Brown, who married in Middlesex Co., VA in 1805 (this John Brown was on the 1810 and 1820 Middlesex censuses...and he died before 1830). I have some clues as to whose "biological child" Smith W. "Brown" probably was....but my research continues on that. I have yet to determine, however, how/if the John Brown who married Mary Bennett in Middlesex in 1805 was related to the referenced Charles and Bennett Browne family. If John Brown truly was, in fact, a member of that overall Browne/Brown family, it is possible, I guess, that he was out of one of the three BROTHERS of Bennett Browne....but I have done little research on that possibility at this point in time (none of the brothers seemed to come to VA from MD, but a SON of one of those brothers certainly could have).

Note: Bennett Browne was named for the husband of one of his great-aunts. That aunt (a Miss Neale) married Richard Bennett, Junior, and this "Richard Junior" was a son of Richard Bennett, Senior, who was an early Colonial Governor of VA. It is not clear how/if the above Mary Bennett who married John Brown was related to the overall family of Governor Richard Bennett. Mary Bennett was a daughter of Mrs. Winnie/Winifred Bennett....but Winnie's "Bennett husband" is not known (her husband was dead by at least 1798, when Winnie married second to a James Owen in Middlesex Co., VA).

The DNA of the "Smith W. Brown family" matches the DNA from the family of the Alexander Smith who died in Essex Co., VA in 1696. Alexander Smith had a neighbor who was named John Smith (who died earlier in Middlesex in 1669). Some researchers have long-suspected that Alexander and John Smith were brothers....but we currently have no male Smith DNA donor out of this John Smith for comparison to Alexander's family. This early John Smith had at least two descendants who married into the Walker family (including a later/younger John Smith), but I have not yet determined how/if those Walkers were related to the Susannah Walker who was one of the two wives of William Fleet, Junior.

Comments or questions on any of the above? Thanks.

William Henry Fleet

Hi, I am from the Fleet family of Liverpool, could origibally be from Sussex way- haven't got that far with my search yet- just starting our Fleet family tree. My grandfather was Alfred Fleet who married May Walsh-May wa sborn in Wexford,Ireland. Alfred and May married in Liverpool in 1929- Alfred's father was William Henry Fleet, a baker. Alfred was a cabinet maker- he also spent time in the Forces, RAF I think. There is a possibility that we are related to Frederick Fleet, one of the lookouts on the Titanic. Obvioulsy I am wanting to trace back beyond William Henry Fleet , if anyone can help me please email me at julste@xtra.co.nz - this is a shared email address with my husband. Thanks.Julie

Did you have any FLEET family in Virginia in the mid-to late 1600s?

I am aware of an early Virginia record which links the "widow FLEET" and a Jno. COOPER and his wife as grantors in a 1675 Gloucester County deed. This record strongly suggests a family relationship of some kind between FLEET and COOPER surnames. This conclusion is further buttressed by several other extant York County, VA, records revealing connections between a widow, Anne FLEETE, and John COOPER, "attorney of Anne." These documents were recorded between 1665 and 1672.

Our earliest documented ancestor was FLEET COOPER, Sr.

Best regards,
Gary
Hi, I was told by my father- Terry Fleet (RIP) that Frederick Fleet , the look out on the Titanic is a distant relatie of ours. Our Fleet family hail from Liverpool,England where Fred was born- I am in the process of doing a Fleet family tree and hope that this will shed some light on the subject. My dad is dead now as are his parents- so I don't really have anyone left to ask.
Julie Gregory (nee Fleet)
