Only thing I could find was Jesse's WWI Draft Registration. Said his birthday was 22 Aug 1882, born IN. Registered in CO. If you haven't already done so, send for his death certificate, check for an obit or look for funeral home records.

Molly

I have an oil painting of ships done by a W.H. Felchter and can find so few people by that name. Just a thought. If you have any info or even guesses, I would be interested in hearing them. Please feel free to email me. Thank you.

Re: Looking for West Virginia Fletcher

To "DeaconBlue"
I would suggest a trip to the Charleston Court House, and check for a marriage license for Lorena Fletcher (prob 1970 to 1990), then check for a birth record (prob. from 1940 to 1952). You could inquire of the Hospital work records. You can check some earlier on line WV Fletcher records at: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx
where you can search Fletcher records for BMD records for Kanawha Co. up to 1911 for births, up to 1967 for Marriages and Deaths, and view jpg files of the record page. You can search for her potential parents, and if still in the area use a phone search program and call local Fletchers trying to locate someone who might know of a Lorena born between 1940 to 1952.

You could also try a Family Tree DNA "Family Finder"test for cousin matches from all of your lines. Highly accurate up to 3rd cousins, 50% of 4th cousins, and dropping off after that. However, you won't know which line the connection is with, and without actual paper trail info, you are looking for very close relatives who lived near Charleston. This is normally a $293 test and occasionally $90 off on sale. If you are a male, you could do a Y-DNA 37 marker test which could define your paternal line.
See http://www.familytreedna.com/ and check out the FAQ tab. The Y-DNA initial prices are list, but you could join as a Fletcher and get group prices. I expect a sale around the end of June to end of July period. This is good science and I have seen it help some other adoptees.
If you need more info you can contact me directly at: FletcherRJ@aol.com
Best regards, Richard J. And the 3 who lived in Hood River were all volunteer fireman.
And Methodists. Grandmother Laca Pillen Fletcher is the one I remember.
Re: Fletchers from Virginia

This might help. Molly

Author: Past & Present Will County, 1907

Allison Fletcher, connected with mercantile interests in Peotone, was born in
Peotone township in 1868, representing one of the old families of the county.
His father, Allison Fletcher, Sr., was a native of Virginia and in early
manhood came to Illinois, having lost his parents when a child. He was one of
the early settlers of the county and aided in its pioneer development and
progress. He first engaged in the operation of a thresher, but afterward
turned his attention to general farming. At the time of the Civil war, true to
his loved southland, he served in the Confederate army and was wounded in
battle in the hand by the bursting of a shell. He afterward engaged in farming
in Peotone township and his sons succeeded him on the farm. He held membership
in the Methodist Episcopal church and was a republican in his political views.
In early manhood he wedded Margaret Barnhart, who was born in Pennsylvania and
who died in 1898, when about sixty years of age. She, too, was a member of the
Methodist church. Their family numbered seven children: Allison, of this
review; James, who is proprietor of a book and stationery store at Peotone;
Clayton, a farmer residing at Manteno; Theodore, a resident of Peotone
township; Eugene, who lives at Manteno; and Mabel and Leonard, both at home.
The mother was twice married, her first husband being James Cowing, by whom
she had four children: Eva, who married Frank Giekerson and resides in
Manteno; Herman, a resident of Peotone; Beatrice, who is the wife of Harry
Brett, a member of the fire department of Joliet; and Maud, who married John
Mungur, a resident farmer of Peotone. Allison Fletcher, whose name introduces
this record, was reared upon the home farm, early becoming familiar with the
duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He worked in the
fields through the summer months and in the winter seasons attended the
district schools. After putting aside his text-books his entire time and
attention were devoted to farming, and he remained upon the old homestead
until 1903, when he put aside agricultural pursuits and formed a partnership
with Herman Frahm in a general mercantile business, in which he has since
continued with success. They carry a well selected line of goods and enjoy a
liberal patronage, their business constantly increasing in volume and
importance. Mr. Fletcher holds membership with the Methodist Episcopal church
and is deeply interested in its various activities and in its substantial
development. He is serving on the official board and is treasurer of the
Sunday school. He is likewise an exemplary member of the Masonic fraternity
and in politics is a republican. The only office he has ever held is that of
constable, but as a private citizen he has loyally supported the measures and
movements that are best calculated to promote the general welfare.
I found Allison, Sr., in the 1900, 1880 and 1870 census records. I wonder if he had another name he went by before that. In 1850 Franklin, Westmoreland, PA, I found an Allison of the right age but born in VT. It looks like Margaret married James Cowing first. They had Eva, Herman, Beatrice and Maud. They are listed as Fletcher in the 1870 census. Margaret arrived in Peotone in 1858 so all the children were born in IL. I'm thinking that James Cowing might have died in the Civil War. Have you gotten Allison's death certificate? It might give his parents names or even place of birth in VA and hopefully not "don't know".

I cannot tie Allison to any VA Fletcher's. Wish I could help.

Molly

After divorcing Mr. Hammond, she married Charles Schultz of Lansing, but divorced him soon after. Mr. Schultz had no further information on my mother.

I was adopted.

I have found 2 of my siblings. There are 5 more to find. My mother also went by the name of "Pat". Hansbrough.
John was a harnessmaker and he and Sarah lived in Fauquier Co., Virginia. James William was a Shoemaker and lived in Culpeper Co., Virginia. If anyone connects to these lines and has information on either of these two families, please email me at 330philly@gmail.com or reply on this message board if you wish. I descend from James and John's sibling and am trying to complete a family tree.
Thank you,
Cathy

I'm looking for anyone with information on my grandparents. My father William John Fletcher was an only child born to George and Margaret (Kimball) of Texas or California. We believe that George was a Texas Ranger and died from a gun shot to the back. My grandmother died shortly after leaving my father an orpan. All we know is that he was placed in a CA orphanage and all documentation was lost in the SFO fires. Anyone that has any knowledge of this family please contact me. Thanks!!! sherijakubowski@hotmail.com

Hi, My name is Elaine (maiden name is Fletcher). I grew up in Niles, Ohio. I currently live in California.

My paternal grandfather was Isaac Fletcher and lived at 410 Warren Avenue, Niles, Ohio and died in 1975.

Isaac had 2 sons (James Robert and Albert John, my father). Isaac, my grandfather, was born 5/3/1890 in Brierly Hill-Strafford County, England. We know he had a sister named Maria in England but we never heard any information about Isaac's family. My father never knew any history of his father's family.

It sounds like the same Isaac Fletcher you are asking about. I'd LOVE to find out more! He is why I'm on Ancestry, to find out some of his family background..

Please reply!!

Thank you both for giving me some things to think about and directions to look. Some day I will get my breakthrough. :) And boy,it sure is true that there are too many Thomas Fletchers from Virginia in that time period!

I wish I knew someone in the direct male line for the DNA testing. How interesting that would be! The last one I knew was my Dad's cousin, and he passed away in the late 90's. I have not kept touch with that side of the family, although I have found some here who have a private tree.

Thanks again - lots to think about!

I looked for Miers listed in early VA records. 1782 had 7 listed for Frederick Co., Pittsylvania Co. and Hampshire County which is part of WV now. I didn't check using the variations of spelling.

1800 had a Thomas Fletcher listed in Accomack Co. However in 1810 here were 3 Fletchers listed in Hampshire Co. and Frederick Co.

You might want to check the records for Frederick County, VA since both surnames were there around the times of births of your ancestors.

The records for Hampshire County, WV are not in good condition but they shouldn't be counted out. I wish you happy hunting.

Molly

Hi, I am involved in the Fletcher DNA group. Thomas in VA is just too common. If his death certificate didn't show a county, it gets to be very tough. There are Personal Property Tax from 1782, for most VA counties, with some in good shape, that show the head of household (and number of sons over the age of 16 - thus taxable) on a fairly complete annual basis.

There are some limited on line trees at WorldConnect (don't know about Ancestry), and even one for the William Corbett line.

If you have a solid male line Fletcher who you can get to do a FT-DNA Y Chromosome test at 37 markers, you might be able to tie him into one of the established VA Fletcher families. His first destination in Ohio could have been from a northern VA migration route towards Parkersburg. However many left VA through the southern Cumberland Gap route and went through Ky/Tn and into Ohio from the south. If his VA relatives were in WV (VA prior to 1863) there are some on line search options for BMD records after 1854, but they were probably in OH by then.
Please contact me by e-mail at FletcherRJ@aol.com for more detail on the DNA testing process.
Best regards, Richard J. "Dick" Fletcher

This Thomas Fletcher left Virgina and lived in Fayette County, Ohio; Rush County, Indiana;a short time in Wisconsin, and then died in Atchison County Kansas in 1872.

He married Polly Miers (1794-1867), also of Virginia. They have two sons that I know of, both born in Ohio. They are James M. Fletcher (1819-1900) and William Corbett Fletcher (1822-1854).

I descend from James's son Amos (1844-1918) and Amos's son Herbert Warren Fletcher (1874-1908).

I'd love to know more about my Fletcher line, and feel like connecting Thomas Fletcher to a Virginia Fletcher line will be a huge breakthrough, since there seem to be a number of well-researched Virginia Fletcher lines. My g-grandfather Herbert Warren Fletcher was still in contact with his g-grandfater Fletcher's extended family in Virginia, and had been planning to take his family to visit relatives in Virginia when his life was cut short in a train collision in 1908 in Utah.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Benjamin Wheeler and Hannah Fletcher

I am looking for Hannah, the wife of Benjamin Wheeler of Concord, the part of Lancaster that became Bolton, and New Marlborough, Mass. She was born ca. 1694 according to her gravestone. They would have been married ca. 1717. Some people's online lineages say she was Hannah Fletcher. I can't find one with a reference other than somebody else's lineage. Who has a good reference for this?

There was a Hannah Fletcher b. in Concord in 1694. Does anyone have a marriage for her?

I have been scanning old, unknown family photos. People in the photos may be Fletchers. If you can help me identify anyone in them, it would be very much appreciated. Of course, I will send copies to anyone that wants them as well. I set up a Facebook page so I can more easily post and share all the photos. There aren't many there as of yet but I'll keep scanning and post more as I get them done. Thanks!

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003504237804

looking for information on a McDonald Fletcher who had his photo taken in Charleston c1900 by Gravely & Moore (this is the Gravely that started the tractor business). He looks like a successful studious young man of about 18-20 in a business suit w/ high collar and holding a newspaper. Perhaps a college? photo.
