Onisime Fleury m. Julie Therrein

Onisime and Julie lived in Arthabaska, Quebec. They had many children, and one of them was my Grandfather, Leodore (Leo) J. Fleury 1896 - 2000. He moved to Detroit Michigan and married Grace E. Butler and had four sons:

Leo A. Jr. 1920 - 1921
Donald A. 1922 - 2005
Emerson C. 1927 - 2007
Richard J. 1929 - 2003

He later remarried Cynthia Alta Dahle and moved to Morro Bay, CA.

Emerson was my father; he married Patricia A. Kirchoff and they had three children:

Cynthia A. 1948
Cheryl A. 1959
Christopher A. 1966

I have been able to trace my Fleury ancestors back to the late 1700s in Quebec, but then the records start getting confusing. Of all of the posts I have read, I haven't seen any names that I am familiar with. I do know that when my Grandfather talked about his relatives, he did mention having Indian relatives, but I don't remember which state he said he visited them in. I also noticed in old photographs, my Grandfather had a sign on his home that spelled his name "Fleurie" even though everywhere else he spelled it "Fleury".

My Great Grandfather would be James F Burns. I've hit a dead end. Please let me know if we have a possible connection. Thanks Catherine

Edna Louise Fleury Photos Park City, Utah

Hi, I recently purchased two photos at a local antique store (Eugene, OR) of Edna Louise Fleury (born Jan 15, 1897 in Utah). Her parents were John Fleury and Annie Marie Porter. Edna married Frank Babcock and had at least two children Winnifred and Jack Babcock. She then married (unk) Barker and died 1974 in California.

If you would like the original cabinet photos, I am NOT related and am trying to get the photograph to someone who is related and would want them. If you are interested, just let me know! I paid $4 for both photos (total) and just ask for reimbursement and shipping costs (I am not trying to make a profit), :)Jessica

Fleury's originally from Ireland are thought to be descended from the Furey clan.

There are also French Huguenots who lived in Ireland after their prosecution in France

DNA testing of a male Fleury is probably the easiest way to figure out if your ancestors are French or Irish...mine are definitely Irish going back to Niall of the Nine Hostages (see wikipedia for lots of info re him)

My Gr Grandmother was Elizabeth Fleury, Born either late 1830's or early 1840's, Unsure of where, the only clue about where came from her son my grandfather(James F Burns) in a census, he says Pa. then later says OH. She lived in In where he was born and was married to Henry Burns. If any of this sounds familiar please contact me, Thanks
Catherine

George Louis Fleury was my great, great, great, great grandfather. He had 9 children: Richard, Henry Francis Doumes, Elizabeth Melesina,
George Alexander, Robert Antoine, Isabella Julia, Charles Manday, John Franquefort. Although the family were living in Ireland they were all descended from french nobility who had fled france as they were huguenots.

Charles Manday married Louise Catherine Barker and had 11 children: Emma,
Elizabeth, Francis G, Mary Esther, Charles William, William Laurenson, Anna Kate, Louis Arthur, Arthur F.J., Gertrude, Alfred Edward.

I am descended from Louis Arthur.

hope that this reaches a few descendants.

your question is not clear...you make a statement about George Fleury, then nothing else...are YOU connected to George Fleury? If I recall correctly he WAS a huguenot...and I am a bit confused about any connection my family may have had to him, if at all, but I have not been able to get far enough in research to prove or disprove a connection...

if you can be more specific about your connection to him, that might help people to see if they are connected or not...if you can be specific about his brothers, sisters, parentage, and descendants, that might help other people to figure out if they are connected or not...

MOST Fleury's I have seen, are pretty confused about their lineage...so any info you can provide about what you have found out might help you and others more...

What confuses ME the most is our DNA shows we are Irish. Have you had DNA testing done on a male, direct descendant Fleury? If so, what did it show? There are French as well as Irish Fleury's...

Hi Linda--good to meet another cousin.

Yes I have just rec'd info that says that Julia Dube who married Joseph Fleury in Maskinonge was a native princess brought up by the Dube family. She was the Algonquin native. She was given that name at her baptism performed so that she & Joseph could marry. He of course was French Catholic.

Olivine Fleury

Looking for the date of Birth of Olivine Fleury daughter of Amable Fleury and Mathilda Benoit. Amable Fleury had a daughter named Olivine and his brother Louis Fleury also had a daughter named Olivine. In the 1881 census of Pontiac/Sheenboro/Chapeau both Olivines appear on the same page. mine was 13 Louis's Olivine was 9. I have all the birth, records, marriage and deaths of all of Olivine's brother's and sisters but I don't have my Olivine's birth. ALl we can calculate with regards to the year of birth according to 1871 and 1881 cencus is that she was born around 1868 either in Sheenboro, Maskinonge Chapeau or who know's maybe the Pembroke area. Olivine married my great Grandad in Chapeau/Sheenboro. My great grandad was James Brennan Jr, son of James Brennan Sr and Julia Doughan. It would really help if I can find my Olivine. The Chartrand family were quite surprised to find that there were two Olivines as everyone kept giving me Louis' daughter's info as if it were my own. But his Olivine did not marry a brennan, mine did. So when I produced the 1881 census with both Louis and Amable and both Olivines on the same page, the search began for my great grandma's birth which no one to this day has ever found yet. my email is malcolmxl@sympatico.ca. The Brennans and the Fleurys and the Venasses are also related.

Hi Suzanne, my name is Linda and the Fleury's of Chapeau and Maskinonge are related to me. My great grandad was Amable Fleury and Mathilda Benoit. Amable had a brother named Louis. Both Amable and Louis have daughters named Olivine. My Olivine's birth records are not found but Louis Olivine is accounted for. I am now looking under the Maskinonge area where Amable came from and hoping that maybe Olivine was the only child who may have not been born in Chapeau. For a long time Olivine (Louis daughter ) was mistaken for mine but when I brought up an 1881 census with my Olivine (Amable's daughter) aged 13 at the time and Louis Olivine who was nine at the time both kids on the same page, the Chartrand family were quite estactic and surprised that there were two all of this time. My Olivine married James Brennan. If anyone can provide me with my Olivine's birth records I would be so happy. I have found the birth and deaths of all her siblings but never found her birth records. I did find the marriage and the death but without the birth record, I have been having problems getting my indian status as the Fleury's were apparently Algonquin.

Hi Suzanne.
Julie Dube: while working on my family tree, I got in touch with a cousin from the Pembroke area who told me that all the family had a band card and that we belong to the Bonnechere Band of Algonquin Aboriginal People. It turns out that Julie Dube was a princess (the Chief's daughter. Her name was changed to a Christian name when they baptized their first child in Maskinonge, Que. The story goes "our great grandpa wanted their child baptized and in order to do so; baptized Julie, married them and baptized the child Julie Fleury who later married a St Jean.) This event was documented and the papers kept- she became on that day a person of interest "in accordance to Federal recognition as an aboriginal”. Last year I travelled to Allumette Island and met with that cousin’s mother (who is the family genealogist) and saw for myself the documentation. I now have my band card.
Name change: when I corresponded with Michel Sabourin and he said that his grandmother told the same story as my grandfather about the name change- I figured something was up. The Fleury name in France is Fleury and not Fleurie. There are a few Fleurie’s in France but that line returned from Canada with the name change. So I don't know for sure why they said that their name was Fleurie (but they hid the fact that Julie (not her real name) was native- maybe to avoid reservations?? or be affiliated with Louis Riel??? I guess we will never know...maybe it was that someone miss spelt it....thought because they were French that it should have a French spelling...but Cardinal Andre de Fleury(who was the prime minister of France during the reign of Louis the 16th) spelt his name Fleury and the Fleury Abbey in France is ie...Fleury’s are well to do people in Ireland(so an Irish friend of mine says)so I researched the name in France and found that that they immigrated from Ireland around 1060...and that they were a descendant line from Henry I. One thing I did see even from Marie Mouton of Versailles (married to our ancestor Fleury) Fleury’s are married to someone of interest; Marie Mouton a descendant from the House of Ajou. Jeanne Gilles a “fille du Roi- coming to Canada with 200 pounds more that the other King’s daughters….The Cardinal’s family owned a clothe manufacture in southern France- they imported to Canada and returned with fur. One of the family’s descendants ran the exploration company here. My grandpapa delivered mail Pony Express and his son was a Forest Ranger in 1910…a tough time back then to get work…but they got favors….I guess it’s too bad that we lost the war and hit the dirty thirties… maybe we’d all have some extra $...tee..he
ps; your contact for native status is Nancy Ward(i can get u the contact info if u want)and the France info is on line through the liberary; can u read French?
here's my contact info are you building you documenting your family tree. Michel and I are using the same database and can make matches...it's free if u keep it to less than 250 people- can't remember the name right now...but can get to u---if u upgrade we can share photos....i have some Julie Fleury, the St Jean's (by the way the came from L'Isle St Jean...now PEI)and the Chartrand's.
my email: littlecreek@sympatico.ca

regards, Colleen
I still don't know what this Algonquin Report is or where to get it.

How do you know that Julia Dube was Algonquin? Where did you find that info?

Re the name change --It's my impression that is was only a spelling difference dependant on who was writing it e.g. someone who wasnt French may not know French spelling.

Also the info re King Henry I, where did you find that?

Sooo interesting!

Thanks...Suzanne

Fleuri born in Maskinonge, Que. and appears to be a descendant of a Fleury dit Mitron
Many of us asked the same question; why the name change? Julie Dube was Algonquin and I believe the Chief's daughter. One of the Fleury's either sibling or cousin was Louis Riel's right-hand-man.
Fleury's in France are descendants of King Henry I; arriving from Ireland around 1065

The link worked fine for me...

With the Flory's and Fleuy's Flury's Fureys I think you need to look at al variations of spellings, which makes things very very confusing. I am lucky in that my Fleury's kept their names spelled corretly at least while in the US...but there are a LOT of variations of the names.

If you have a direct line male, and can do a DNA, that might be the best way to get a handle on the REAL country of origin...There was a lot of moving around, a lot of mispellings etc.

Remember, most people in century's past did not even know how to read and write...so mispellings and changes along the way are very common.

What is it & would you mind telling me how to get it as well?

Re-Joseph Fleury & Julia Dube were my gr-gr grparents. They were married in Maskinonge Quebec & subsequently moved to the Ottawa Valley area. They both died in Chapeau Quebec across the river from Pembroke Quebec.

Tks

Someone contacted me tonight, and it caused me to look for this post.

I have since found that Isbaella's parents were George and Ann Stephenson, and much much more.

The person who contacted me tonight knows who Hazel is, and it turns out Ann is both of our GGGrandmothers.

YIPPEE this is the second long distance cousin I have located through ancestry.com

Although it has been 3 years since I made this post, and have never had a query about it since, it amazes me that I still get occasional queries abotu some of the people here.

Since I made this post, I have grown my family tree to more than 1000 people...so keep looking if you have some needles in the haystack ( I still have quite a few) and keep your email contact current...

You never know when someone might connect years after you have made a post.
