Hello, again - after reviewing and pondering . . .
I think the 2 different marriage applications in Wilcox Co., AL are the SAME Wilson Flowers. Unless you suspect there were 2 at the same time and place(?)

It "appears" that Wilson and Mary Waite "thought" they wanted to marry, in JULY 1834, but changed their minds.
Your Wilson's DEC 1834 marriage is below; Mary Waite m 1837 to John Stanford.

Originally, it threw me off that the dates were not in chronological order by the pages. [That is, the JUL 1834 application (p25) is listed AFTER the DEC 1834 application (p24).]
The dates are correct per Barefield's transcriptions.

I will try to answer this, but I am typing with a broken arm, so it may take a while. The problem has to do with several people with the same or similar names, and with ancestry trees that are not completely accurate.

Jesse Flowers and Anna Dean were both born about 1775 in SC married in 1795 in SC and moved to Alabama about 1830. They had the following children:

There was "no return" of the license to prove actual marriage, but that was not unusual. Assuming the couple did marry, what happened to them?

I am tracking early Wilcox Co., AL WAIT(E)(S) and am trying to figure out how this "Mary Waite" fits with the others.

I notice Ancestry.com trees with a "Wilson Flowers" who's vital statistics "may" be the same(?):

HOWEVER . . .
, the Ancestry.com trees show THIS Wilson Flowers
m to an Elizabeth Rainey --- I am confused because LDS seems to have the "same" Elizabeth Rainey m "James J. Flowers" 12 Jun 1826, Jasper, Georgia. Was James J. Flowers = Wilson Flowers?

She is listed as informant on the death certificate of Lulu Flowers who died on Nov 7, 1935 in Kenton, Gibson Cty., TN. I believe that Mrs. Turner was the daughter of Lulu Flowers. My father is Charles Flowers, son of FC Flowers, son of FC, son of James. A relative told me that Nancy died first and James remarried. That's who Mary is. I don't really know if any of these James Flowers are in my Flowers line. That's why I am following these lines, to see if I can make a connection to mine.

My oldest known Flowers ancestor showed up in Mississippi about 1820, supposedly from SC. This is about the same time some of the SC Flowers went to Alabama, so I am still looking for any possible connections. What is amazing is HOW MANY Flowers there were in Alabama from at least two or more Flowers lines.

I do not belong to Fold3, so I would appreciate any information you can find there.

I am also always looking for any straight-line male Flowers who might be willing to be Y-DNA tested. That is the only way we will ever prove which of these lines is which.

I have another question regarding James C Flowers and Nancy Tatum if you can answer it. It appears that they both died before 1900 in Jones County, Mississippi. The 1900 census for Ellisville, Jones, Mississippi shows their two youngest children, Johnny and Jimmie are living with a Mary J Flowers b 1856 in Georgia. Do you know anything about this Mary J Flowers? One would assume she was a relative, but I cannot place her??

I am researching several Flowers Families who lived in Alabama prior to the Civil War. I need help determining what happened to the following three James Flowers all born about 1838-1842 in Alabama.

1) James Flowers son of Wilson Flowers b 1805 in Darlington, SC and Elizabeth Isabelle Grantham b 1815 in Darlington, SC. This James was b about 1840 and is in the 1850 and 1860 census in Wilcox, Alabama.

2) James C Flowers son of William H Flowers b 1821 in South Carolina and Carsey L MNU b 1828 in South Carolina. This James was born about 1842 and is in the 1850 and 1860 census in Pike County, Alabama.

3) James C Flowers son of Jesse Messer Flowers b 1795 in Darlington, South Carolina and Mary MNU b 1803 in North Carolina. This James was born about 1838 in Marengo County, Alabama and is in the 1850 and 1860 census in Santa Rosa County, Florida.

One of these James Flowers probably married Nancy Naomi Tatum in 1863 in Lauderdale, Mississippi. One was likely killed at Front Royal, Virginia in 1861. One probably applied for a CSA pension in 1901.

Help!! Does anyone have anything that definitively shows which is which? Was there yet another James Flowers that could also be confused with these three?

I also have this family in the 1870 census in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Mary A Flowers b 1884 in Alabama, daughter of Robert Flowers and Nancy Blackmon with husband William W Morton b ~1840 in Texas. In the 1870 census, they are listed with their three children Alonzo, Robert, and Leona ages 4, 3, and 1 - all born in Louisiana.

My ancestor was Thomas Flowers who married in Halifax, N S 1789 and died there 1792/3 and had a son George Flowers born 1785 Halifax. I have always thought they might have come from Maryland to N S, Canada.
George had sons George,Henry/Harry,William, James, John
I think Thomas came to Halifax as early as 1755. Many came up from the states about then.

There is a Ohio Births & Christening index for Ohio.

It says Harry Gantley was born in Ohio, Aug 7, 1898.

His father was Thomas Gantley
his mother was Mary Hiland.

The 1930 census states Harry's parents both were born in Ireland.

This is my Grandfather's bother. Their name was changed from Howard to Flowers when my great grandmother took them and left her husband, Franklin Paul Howard, who was a violent alcoholic. He moved to California in the 1950's and moved back to Ft. Worth in the late 1970's.

The story my family has always told is that my GGreat Grandfather Jim M. Flowers (abt 1884) was orphaned in one of the last Indian battles that took place. Being that he was mixed with Indian/white neither family took him or his sister in so he was "adopted" by a nice African-American woman. We are unsure if the Flowers name is our family name or the kind lady who took in the children. If any of this information sounds remotely familar it would be greatly appreciated to know. My grandfather Billy and great grandmother Callie Bell were always told that there was not much information and on Jims death certificate it is listed as "UNKNOWN" for both parents.
This all takes place in Southern Alabama(Pike Co.)

Thanks for the reply Jeanne. Unfortunately my Elizabeth Flowers has been a dead-end for me for quite some time now... I wish I knew more about her but she is the end of this branch for me right now. I'm not sure of her heritage, only that she married a Lucas Burk(e) and ended up in Washington Township, Morgan County, Indiana in the 1850 census. Although unsubstantiated I have the Lucas / Elizabeth union producing sons James (b 1803 Virginia -1880), Thomas (1804 Virginia -1859), Harvey (1811 Indiana -1886) and a daughter Matilda (1819 Indiana - 1893 Indiana). There may be more? Matilda is the one I'm interested in as she is my ggggrandmother. Info on Matilda was obtained from her obit (Morgan Co. Gazette, May 27, 1893) which also listed her parents as Lucas Burk(e) and Elizabeth Flowers. Would love to hear from anyone this might ring a bell for!

I located a photo of Rebecca Flowers (1821-1912) that was posted in Ancestry.com. My gggrandmother was Rebecca Flowers Stone (1821-1912). I can not open the picture or the link. If anyone knows anything about this photo or about her, please contact me. Her mother was Elizabeth (1799-1889). I do not know who her father was. Emma Rose Flowers, 83 of 530 First Street, New Lexington, Ohio died at 12:05pm on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Genesis Hospice, Zanesville, Ohio.

Born August 27, 1928 in Roseville, Ohio (Muskingum County) to the late Thomas Flowers and Rose Flowers Corder.

Mrs. Flowers was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Roseville and the Roseville American Legion.

Survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a brother.

In addition to her parents, preceded in death by son, Lee Shroyer; brother, Milton Flowers and two sisters, Mary Lou Elliot and Eleanor Flowers.

Calling hours will be held from 9am-1pm with funeral service at 1:00pm with Pastor Justin VanOrman officiating on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home, 304 Mill Street, New Lexington, Ohio.

Terry, Jeanne here. Have any of Thomas's descendants taken the DNA test? If so, I'd be interested. There's a chance that they are related to my Flowers family. No real evidence, tho. We have a Thomas born bet 1784-1790 in PA,who vanished without a trace, and there are similarities in names in the family, i.e. Benjamin, Miriam. Let me know if you find something.
