Flynn/Collins of Abbeyside, Waterford, Ireland

I've seeking some help in the next level of my Flynn/Collins family research, specifically in Abbeyside, Waterford, Ireland.

My ggggrandfather was John Flynn, a sailor. He married Hanoria/Hanora Collins on February 8, 1866 at the Catholic church in Abbeyside. They were both residents of Abbeyside at the time of marriage.

John Flynn's father was John Flynn. Hanoria Collins' father was Dennis/Denis Collins. Both were sailors.

Based on immigration records, it appears that John Flynn Jr was born around 1842 and Hanoria was born around 1847. John and Hanoria arrived in the U.S. around 1868. In addition, in the Griffith's Valuation of 1868, it appears that John Flynn Sr. and Dennis Collins both lived on Main Street in Abbeyside.

I'm curious if anyone has researched any Flynns/Collins in Abbeyside? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

My great grandfather Jeremiah Flynn(born about 1859) who lived in St. Catharines Ontario Canada listed his parents as J. J. Flynn and Marion Enright (or Julia). We have no record of his parents but their listing on marriage and cemetery records of Jeremiah. Any ideas?

Alaine,
This may be a stretch but my gggrandfather, James Murtaugh immigrated to US in 1864. He was the son of John Murtaugh and Mary Flynn.I believe he came over with a cousin, James Flynn. A classmate of mine in high school(La Salle High School, Niagara Falls, NY), James Flynn, told me were were related to each other. He noted we had a common ancester through Mary Flynn. Unfortunately, that class mate has died before I took much interest in researching the family tree. If any of this makes sense to you, please let me know. I have a Flynn connection but it may not be the same.

He was born in West Virginia, moved to Nevada, married Kay E Kehoe and then Renie Benoit.
Ancient Flynn of Munster

One origin of the the Ui-Floinn now O’Flynn or Flynn is an ancient Irish tribe known as the Corca Laidhe from the province of Munster in Ireland. The Ua Eidersceoil now Driscoll or O'Driscoll is one of the principal names of the tribe and according to the ancient genealogies share a common ancestor with those Flynn. I'm working with a small cadre of interested individuals to see if any evidence of the common ancestry can be found via a statistical analysis of DNA results. In lieu of being able to test persons still living in Munster I figure we can use data collected for genetic genealogy where the earliest known ancestor is stated to originate in Munster. For this purpose I started building a database of DNA results of persons of key names involved such as Barry, Coffey, Hennessey, O’Connor, O’Driscoll, O'Flynn and O'Leary. If you have tested 37 or more at FTDNA or 46 at Ancestry please contact me so that we can include your results.

Our project has a forum for discussion of the Corca Laidhe on Yahoo and via a Rootsweb mailing list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Corca_Laidhe_DNA/
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/DNA/IRL-CORCA...
Thank you,
Colin Ferguson
colin.fergie@gmail.com

I am looking for a Matthew Flynn bon 1861 in County Cork to Simmon Flynn and Ellen PIGGOTT. They had other children Mary Agnes(Ireland), Francis or Fannie (England), Ellen or Nellie (West Indies), Margaret (St. Louis, MO). They took a long route emigrating from Ireland to MO. Maatthew was in St. Louis for the 1880 census with his sisters and widowed mother, then disapeared. I think his middle name was Simon. Could this be the same Matthew?

Ellen Flynn b. abt 1845 Cork Ireland

The Ellen Flynn I am seeking to track down was born in Cork in about 1845. She and Frederick Dean (b. 1841 in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire) were probably married in Cork where a daughter Eliza Dean born in 1875. They then seemed to have moved to Great Shelford where their first son was born in 1876. I can track her and her family in England Censuses from 1881 onwards.

I cannot find any references to her or Frederick Dean in Irish records.

Any information about Ellen's birth and marriage in Ireland would be valuable.

Hi Carole!

I believe this may be a branch on my family tree. I also believe certain information listed may be incorrect.

My records for this:

Father: Bernard G. (Barney) Habing. Mother: Mary Elizabeth Brummer. Barney was born in Oldenburg, Germany around 1840, and came with his family to America in late 1840's. They lived near Teutopolis, Illinois. Mary Elizabeth was born in Bishop Creek, Effingham County, Illinois. She and Barney married around 1865. Date unknown when they moved to Indianapolis, but Barney worked in the Mercantile department store business. Barney died ~1920 and is buried in the Catholic Cemetary, Indianapolis, IN.

Barney and Mary Elizabeth's two daughters listed in 1972 Habing family book:

Lillian Habing b. ~ 1867, married John Merl. No further information regarding children, residence, death at curren time.

Mamie Habing b. ~ 1870, Married Theodore Onasendal. Children: Elizabeth Onasendal, no further info.
Mamie Onasendal. Mamie supposedly married and moved to Chicago, had two daughters. Searching for further info.

I am working on a Habing book, and continuing research to learn more about this line. Anyone with further information is welcome to contact me at lynn.stuckey@hotmail.com

Dave & Orla

sorry for the delay in replying, but I've only just got around to seeing my sister again (she lives in Coventry, whilst I live in Derby). Anyway, she has given me a copy of Michael's birth certificate which shows he was born in Ballinadee on 10/11/1897 to Patrick and Ellen Flynn. So I guess that makes us family :)

My sister also had a letter written by Ellen to my grandmother Dorothy. Unfortunately it's not dated, but it has an address of Kildarra, Bandon, Cork. I'll see if I can find any photos of my grandfather & grandmother.

Both my sister (Carol) and myself are on Facebook, what were the details of the Facebook account that you referred to in a previous post?

best regards
Paul

I would suggest that you get the Death Certificates from Texas for William, Alice and Carrie/Garrie.

They should list where they were buried or if cremated.

Then contact the Cemetery and verify if one, or all three, are buried there.

I ordered a death certificate from Texas for my great aunt Margaret Flynn who died in 1942 and it showed that the body had been shipped to my hometown in Nebraska. I now know where she is buried but there is no tombstone so doubt if it will ever show up on Find A Grave. I did verify with the cemetery that she and her husband d. 1928 are both buried there.

Contrary to popular belief, not everything is on line and free.
Gretchen

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply. It's looking like between the three of us we may have solved a family mystery!

Had you any luck getting further info from your sister? Are you on facebook? We've set up a group for the Hunts (our maternal grandmother's married name [Patsy's niece])where we post the latest details of our findings from our family tree research.

It'd be really great if we could keep in contact & keep each other in the loop & may unearth some more mysteries!

Kind regards

Dave & Orla

That is the only info I have. I started with his date of death and the fact that he was in the Army. From that someone was nice enough to send me his military info. His actual military records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis years ago. I got his date of birth from the military records that were sent to me. I know he died in Kings County Hosp. but nothing else. It is very hard to find these things out. I will try to get his birth certificate at the very least that would have his parents info on it. Thanks for the response I appreciate all the help I can get.

You didn't state his parents names and places of births and/or his siblings names so it makes it difficult to find him in any census.

The name Flynn is very common, as is the name Thomas. Assuming you are correct as being born in 1913 in New York State (County? City?) there are 18 listings for a Thomas Flynn b. 1812 - 1814 in New York in the 1920 Census. That's assuming it was spelled and transcribed correctly.

Since the birth year on a census are always "Iffy" it's impossible to tell which one, if any, is the correct one.

You might resend your message with the names of your grandparents and Thomas's siblings.

Other than that I would suggest you try to get his military records but more importantly his birth and death certificates to get more information on him. As his child you should have no trouble getting the certificates from the state.

If you live in the New York area you might also try the Libraries to see if there was an obituary.

Hope to see a new request soon.
Gretchen Flynn
Formerly from Nebraska

Dave & Orla

the information that you have is fascinating and does tie in closely to my grandfathers story. My sister has Michael's birth certificate and a few other documents and photos (I think), so I will be able to confirm Michael's date of birth the next time I see her.

The story that I recall of my grandfather's journey from Ireland was that he left under somewhat dubious circumstances (although my sister and cousins don't recall this detail - so I could have imagined this!). I don't remember any mention that he left Ireland with his brother.

Michael then worked his way from Wales (presumably) to the Arbury Estate (near Coventry), England, where he was a farm labourer. I think it was here that Michael met my grandmother Dorothy Garrett (1894-1975) and they eventually married (but I don't know the date of marriage). They had three children - Patrick, Michael (my father) and Margaret - funny how the names repeat through the generations. I never met my grandfather as he died in 1966, three years before I was born. He and Dorothy are buried in a small village church in Astley, Warwickshire.

I will ask my sister for the information that she has on my grandfather, as my memories are a bit sketchy. My father, aunt and uncle all died some years ago, so I am struggling a bit with the exact details of history.

So hopefully I will get back to you both with some more information, but it was nice to have made contact with you.

best regards
Paul

Thomas Flynn

I am looking for my grandfather Thomas Flynn born in in 1861 I think in Rosscommon.

At some point he came to England and married a Mary Ann Caine in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. They had four children; Sarah, Catherine, John and my mother Rose.

Unfortunately Thomas died in 1917 at The Royal Hospital Wolverhampton. He had had a couple of operations on his kidneys and apparently died of "operations fatigue". He is buried in Wolverhampton.

He had brothers and sisters some of whom emigrated to America but I cannot find a link. I know that there was a Martin Flynn in Manchester who owned a building company or construction something like that and they had a bungalow at Malahide which we stayed in. Martin had a sister Bridget who lived in Balyhorness (?spelling). We took my mother over in the 70's and we visited the house where Thomas was born. The resident owner of the place at the time had built a new property in the grounds and used the old house for his animals and chickens. I particularly remember chickens sitting on top of a Grandfather clock in what would have been the lounge!!!

If anybody can help I should be grateful.
