Re: Michael John Foley

Hmmm. Forget Ellis Island. It didn't open until 1892. What you're looking for are any shipping manifests that cover that time. I wouldn't even limit it to NY, honestly, as the port of entry.

I found a Michael Foley in Westfield, Fayette, Iowa, in the 1880 census, a boarder, a farm laborer. I've attached the image for your perusal. That's the only one enumerated in Iowa that year, and none in Nebraska, and that's using Soundex to cover weird spellings.

Are you saying he later went on to Australia with his sister, or are you saying he arrived in the US with his sister, who later went on to Australia?

Also, you narrowed it down to Kerry, but Kelley with an "e" is just a variant, which means that you cannot discount all the other billions of Kellys, regardless of spelling. I wish you could, really, but you can't. But even so, when I searched on failteromhat.com (click on Census Directories, go to Griffith's Valuation), only two of that spelling come up, both in County Offaly:

Surname First Name Townland Parish
Following are the exact matches:
Kelley	William Kilcolgan Beg Killaghally or Wheery
Kelley	Michael Kilcolgan Beg Killaghally or Wheery

Now, there's somewhere to start!! These two men were likely brothers or cousins.

I found something on findagrave.com. Go to http://tinyurl.com/7bcg8c4 and see if that means anything to you. Probably not, but it's a Foley in Plymouth Co., Iowa....what a coincidence. The bio they included states this one came from Co. Galway. You can search failteromhat.com to see the results for foleys in galway, then see the michaels.

Let me know if any of this is a help, or if it can be ruled out...

Jeanne

Hi there appreciate the help! His parents were Michael Foley and Mary Kelley (I'm leaning towards Kerry, Ireland as her origins, since that seems the only place I've found Kelley's located thus far). Michael John Foley, the son, was a farmer in Plymouth County, Iowa. I've now traced him back to West Union, Iowa as a farmer on a State Poor Farm, but I still want to find him at his insertion point into the U.S. He didn't come through Ellis Island... I recently found a Michael & Mary Foley family on the 1971 England Census. Haven't had much time to research that clue...

Looking for any info on Garrett Hovart Foley b. abt 1862 Ireland. His father is Michael Foley of Ireland. Garrett came to the US and lived and died in Stamford, Connecticut. I don't believe any of his descendants are alive. Would like any info on his parents from Ireland. He might have been from County Sligo, but not sure. I know it's not much info to go on, but it's all I have.
Please email me directly Juteshouse@comcast.net with any possible info.
Thank you
Judy Laslo

Mary, I don't know how you would check in your huge tree, but my great grandfather, Mathew Foley, mother Cushing, supposedly came to North American with his sister, name unknown, to meet an aunt. He coughed and was quarantined and apparently was released at age 12 on his own, (possibly around 1842+-)sister had gone on with the aunt, location unknown, name of aunt unknown, name of sister unknown. I have found only a Mathieu Foly coming to Canada who fits at all but the age is suspect, and who turns up in the census reports here under the same spelling and then under Mathew Foley from then on. I don't know where in Clare he was from, but for some reason the name of the area you mention 'clicks' for me. Could you pls. email me at my person email addy patricia_endicott@rogers.com
Thanks very much for whatever you can do to help; I have hit a brick wall and have hired a genealogist to help me in May for a few hours and the more info I can provide her, the better.
I am a Foley in Carlow.
I should be able to help you.

12 Tullow Street - J. McDonalds - Public House & Grocery which replaced the 'Cather Inn' is one of the oldest established business premises in Carlow. It has remained in the same trade since 1668. Foley Bros were Family Grocers and Wine & Spirits Merchants. It was then called “The Old House” in the 1930/40s and then "Dinty Delaneys". It was then renamed "The Bad Shilling" for a short while when it was owned by Ned Dowling. It then was bought by a popular publican namely Aidan Lennon and was renamed "Lennon's Corner". Also at that time it became known as "The Pan of Rashers". Aidan Lennon who had originally opened a public house in the early 1970s in Toumeys grocery and bacon shop in Tullow Street. He relocated to 112 and renamed the public house "Lennon's Corner" in the early 1980s. It is on the corner of College Street and Tullow Street. The Presentation Convent on the next corner is now the Carlow County Library.
My great great grandfather was William E. Foley (1882-1974) I do not know much for sure about him. I know he was the first William E. Foley in a line of 4 of us. My understanding is that he left his wife Mary K. Harrington and started a new family. What I have been able to find suggests that Beverly R. Foley (born abt 1859) was his father but nothing seems concrete there. There are two family trees that list all the way down to my grandfather and both show Beverly R. Foley as my gr. gr. great grandfather. One tree goes all the way back to a Thomas Foley born in Va. 1651. I have not gotten a response from the creators of these two trees. If anyone has information I would love some help.

I have not logged onto Ancestry in over a year. I was fascinated to discover that a copy of "Seventy Years: The Foley Saga" was found by chance! We have a copy. My husband Michael Foley Anderson is named after his great grandfather, Michael Foley, who was one of the founders of the Company. Michael Foley started the Company with three of his brothers-it was a large family! Michael Foley eventually settled in St. Paul and had a daughter Rachel and a son Ed, who wrote the book. Ed and others went to California at various times. Rachel remained in St. Paul and married a partner in the Company, Francis (Frank) Anderson, who eventually became President and then Chairman of the Company-his picture is in the book. Frank and Rachel had four children. Their second oldest son, Francis (also called Frank), settled in Brownsville Texas to manage land holdings there. He raised seven children-the oldest is Michael, my husband. We have a family tree on ancestry (Anderson/Foley/Harris) if interested. As noted in the below post, the original entry of the Foleys to the US was through Canada. From what we have learned, John Foley came from County Carlow in Ireland to Ontario (Lanark County) where he and his wife Johannah had many children who have spread far and wide. There are many branches of the Foley family beyond the four that started Foley Brothers. Anyone interested in more about the original large Foley clan in Ontario is welcome to see what we know at www.michaelanderson.net/family. I know a long time has passed since the book was found and originally posted, but we would certainly be willing caretakers if the book if still unclaimed. Although the idea of donating it to a historical society in Lanark County Ontario, or even St. Paul, MN, sounds great!

Re: Edna Dora Foley

I believe I have some info to follow up with this post from 12 years ago, for any future Foley's that come across this thread.

From the oldest person in your post - C.D. Foley - I believe this is (James) Cantwell Daniel Foley 1861-1933. He married a Jennie Bricker in Kansas in 1888, although I do not know much about her. I have found three different last names for her - Bricker, Pierce, and Ennefer. Bricker is the only name that I have evidence for, their marriage record exists in Dickinson County, Kansas.

John Byron Foley (1892-1967) is buried in Sterling, Colorado, along with most of his family. His children were Edna Dora, Rose, John Dollner, and Henry P..

I believe John Byron had at least one sibling, an older brother Dollner Sloan. I am descended from him, the Foley side of my family went to John Byron's funeral in 1967.

I have not found them together on any census, however I do know that Dollner spent time in Mexico also. Their father Cantwell worked on the Panama canal, which may explain how they ended up in southern Mexico for a while.

One of John Byron's sons is named John Dollner (1916-2001, also buried in Sterling), I believe he was named after his uncle Dollner.

Cantwell and Dollner are not common names, and for my family (descended from Dollner) to attend John Dollner Foley's father's funeral, there has to be something there. Unfortunately the only family I have that went to that funeral were too young at the time to remember the connection. I believe they are related as described above, I just can't substantiate it.

If any of this matches up for anyone, please contact me.

Not sure if any of this helps you or not. But in looking in to my family I came across a Foley head stone. Only reason I gave it a second look was due to the sad loss of 3 Foley Children mentioned by name on the headstone. So here it is. Thomas Foley Sr, born Cork Ireland in 1803 (approx) died in 1882 Hamilton. on Canada. He married Bridget McGrath born 1820 in Castlemartyr, Cork, Ireland died in Hamilton , on Canada Oct 27th in 1894. Had at least 3 children, unknown if any more. Denis Foley born 1843 (aprrox) died age 13, John born 1845 ( aprox) died age 11, Thomas Foley Jr born 1847 ( approx) died age 9. All 3 boys died at the same time together date unknown in 1856. They were lost at sea. Thomas Sr and Bridget Foley are both inturned together at Our Lady of Mount Careml Cemetery in Freelton, ON. If this is a connection to you, please let me know I have a picture of their headstone and I will pass it on to you. Thanks, Kimberly

Did you ever find a home for this book? My connection is that I am trying to find my great grandfathers sister (name unknown, who apparently came here with him to meet an aunt, name also unknown but we assume from the Foley family, at New York). Dates would be around early to mid 1800s. Our info is sketchy at best, even where they came from, so any bits I can try to tie together are helpful. I would be happy to have this book to see if there is any link to any of my family. Short of going to Ireland, I have not had any luck at all in finding anyone prior my great grandfather, Mathew Foley.
Patricia Endicott

I have a Margaret Fahy in my family tree who was born in Cork in 1882 . I know some of these Fahys emigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Boston area . The name Foley rings a bell for some reason and I know for sure that we were related to the Daceys , some of whom were involved in the Dairy business . If any of this is of interest would be pleased to hear from you .

Rgds , Denis .

Jeanne

Thanks for your post. My father's paternal side of the family: Quinlivan, Quailey, Keenan(Canan, Cannane, Kernane) King, Kane, comes from County Clare. Most of these families were from the the parish of Kiladysert, KilChreest, or Kilfidane. The Quinlivan's are either from this area or Ennis as stated by my GAunts and GUncles. I'm interested though in your information about the thought that maybe your Foley's had originally came from the County of Kerry. My mom's maiden name was Foley and her entire paternal side of the family came from the town of Shanahill, Parish of Keel, Co Kerry. Interesting.

PS The name Timothy is prevalent on the Foley side.

Regards,
Jim Quinlivan

"My dad Michael Julian Foley, born in NY 1862; died in 1890 from pneumonia caught while fighting a fire in furniture mfg on Pearl St. NY where he was employed."

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. I will make a note of it. This family, already Church of Ireland in 1780s, in Co. Cork so early, and using middle names, does not sound like the progenitor of my very RC Malachi Foley, but you never know.

Martin Foley, Liverpool, Perry Co., PA

I am searching for information about Martin Foley b. 1796 in Ireland. He is listed on the 1850 census as living in Liverpool Township, Perry County, PA with his wife, Elizabeth, b. 1798 in Pennsylvania. It is believed that their daughter, Mary, was the wife of my ancestor, John Keagle. Any information about this Foley family would be most appreciated!
