Sorry to say I didn't purchase it. When we went back to store the follow'g yr., it was out of business. Regret not buy'g it now. It was so massive, & I feared I'd be stuck w/ it. I didn't want to use vacation money for something that had no use to me & would have to be stored, which I would find difficult in my home. Sorry.

Folk in Grand Rapids, MI

I am searching for my grandfather's death record, Leslie Folk, born around 1888. He was married to Anna E. (Schmidt)Smith Folk and had three children, Glenn W. Folk, Lillian Folk, Raymond Luther Folk (my father, born on June 14, 1913), all born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He no longer lived with the family sometime after the 1930 census and I can not find any further mention of him or of his death. Any information about the family or where he lived would be appreciated.

All I have to work from is:

Cheryl Folk (b.1958)

Cheryl is the daughter of Fredrick F Folk (b.1936) and Marian L Walker (b.1926, d.1972).

Fredrick F Folk is son of Fredrick R Folk and Genevieve unknown.

Marian L Walker is daughter of Earl Walker (b.~1906) and Grace unknown.

Cheryl has a brother named David.

Story goes that this was Marian's second marriage, and that she has children from first marriage named Linda, Marvin and Stanley.

And now you know everything I know about this branch of the Folks. We are interested in fleshing out (b. d. siblings, etc.) a few generations for our tree (maybe back to early 20th century). Please reply to this post and I will get an alert from Ancestry.com. Thank you kindly.
Catherine, It is nice to meet you too. I apologize for being a year and 8 months late responding to your 29 Dec 2009 e-mail about my grandmother, Katherina Schmidt. The reason for the delay is that my wife and I sold our home in Texas in May, 2009 and moved in June that year. You know how moves go; I've been away from my genealogy hobby until now because of it. Anyhow, I would very much appreciate receiving a copy of the Katherina Schmidt birth information that you have. I can confirm that my Gramdma's dad's name is Mikal Schmidt. I obtained his name from her Ellis Island record and the record also shows here place of last residence as Mercydorf. Her Illinois Death certificate shows her birth date as 23 Jun 1889 and her Mom's name as Katherine Dornbach. That may be wrong. Her husband, Frank Folkl/Folk was very leery of providing accurate personal information to government agencies. So the Death Certificate may contain some erroneous information. Thank you, in advance for your help and let me know, if you need any additional information. It's great to be in touch with someone else who has relatives from Mercydorf.

Bill Folk

I'm so happy you found me. I may have already found Lee I. Folk headstone. Is this him?
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=...;
My mom Barbara Lee Folk (Fuller)& I have been looking at this headstone, hoping that we found my mothers grandfather. If this is right, my grandfather Robert Lee Folk lived about 20 miles from his father (Lee I Folk) and never knew it. (A little sad news.)
I knew about the brother and sister, I can even go back a few generations back from there.
This makes your husband my mom's Half-Uncle, I believe. This is great news. I can't wait the tell my Mom. You can contact me direct: texastimf@gmail.com
Tim

I'm looking for info on a Lee Isam Folk born about 1896 in Gilmore, Humboldt, Iowa. His father and mother were John Henry Folk and Mima Katherine Silveus married in Tayorville, Illinois on 20 Jan 1889. My great grandfather (Lee I. Folk b. about 1896) left my great grandmother (Marie Kathrine Schlögl b. about 1894) around the time my grandfather (Robert Lee Folk) was born, in 1916. Then Lee I. Folk disappeared. Info on Folk ancestors from this line would be great.
Tim

My father told me when he was alive that the name was Volk in Germany and was changed when the family came to America, but that we also have some English so not sure if that helps. My issue is everyone is deceased and I can't find the paper I have that has the names of my ancestors and dates on my dads side. Good luck.

If so, I have a copy of your Katharina's birth record and I would be happy to send it to you. The pages contains 1889 births from May through July. Your Katharina could not have been born in June. The record does show a Katharina Schmidt born on 19 Jul 1889.

My Teufel family is also from Mercydorf. It is nice to meet you.

Sincerely,
Catherine Teufel O'Neill

Upon researching a certain segment of my family, I came across the marriage of a woman who could be my first cousin once removed. Her name was Bella Distenfeld and she married Harry Schwadron. They had children and one of them, their daughter Sylvia, married a Benjamin Folk. Does anyone have any information on him? I found her social security record, showing her dying in Holyrood, Kansas

Thanks for contacting me. So far, the only connection between my Folkl family and your Folk ancestors is they were both from Austro-Hungary. Here are some additional facts about Franz Folkl and his wife Katy Schmidt. Franz was born in Austro-Hungary in 1886. I do not know his home town. His father is Valentine Folkl and mother, Ann Knol. No birth dates for the parents. He sailed from Bremen, Ger. to Baltimore, MD aboard SS Breslau arriving May 1905 at age 19. Relatives tell me he had not met his wife before coming to the States. She, Kata Schmidt, was born Jun 1889 in Merczyfalva, Austro-Hungarian Empire and sailed to the States from Fiume, Croatia, then also part of Austro-Hungary. Her hometown was Merczyfalva, (Hungarian) or Mercydorf (German) in Austro- Hungary. She arrived at Ellis Island Aug 1907 age 18. Both Franz Folkl and Kata Schmidt spoke German and were Catholic.

So you Franz Folkl arrived in Chicago, IL in 1905, was in MO in 1909, MT in 1911, then back to Chicago in 1930? He sure moved around!

I have a Josef Folk arrived in NY from port of Hamburg, Germany on May 2, 1906 on the "Pennsylvania". He was 46 (b.1860), married (but traveled without his wife), from Glogowatz, Hungary.
I believe he went back for a short time, then Jozsef/Josef Folk arrived (a second time) in NY from port of Carnaro, Triest, Austria on Jun 25, 1909 on the "Pannonia". He was 49 (b. 1860), married, and from Glogowatz, Hungary, and going to join son-in-law, Franz Paszter/Paszler in Chicago.
His wife, Sophia (nee Dörner/Doerner) Folk probably immigrated later in 1911/1912 with other of her children. Sophia was born Jun 29, 1860 (+/- 1 year) in Glogowatz and died Dec 15, 1919 in Chicago. All they know abt. Joseph after this is he went back to Hungary and remarried.
The South Carolina Folk descended from Jacob Folk 1724-1777 who came from Immenstadt Germany. He came to SC in 1740 and has many descendants. There is probably a relation from Germany.

I am aware of at least two other Folk immigrants, the Hans George Folk family who arrived in Philadelphia in 1749. A researcher on this family is John Stangarone 796 Springs Road, Springs, PA 15562. Another is the James Fowke Jr family and his brother William from Staffordshire England in the 1600's. Descendants from this family include Judge Henry Bate Folk a prominent judge and Baptist minister, and Joseph Wingate Folk the governor of Missouri from 1905 to 1909. Many of this family spread to Tennessee and North Carolina.

We have a lots of John's so there could very well be a close connection to Germany. I have a pretty good handle on all the Folk's in SC and will be happy to help you if you make any connection there.

Perry Folk
Greenville, SC

Thank you for your reply!
I would love to have a scan of the photo you mention, and photos of any of the descendants of George & Lydia (Clark) Folk that you might share.
Lydia (Folk) Wells was my second cousin, once removed.
If my calculations are correct this would cause you to be my fifth cousin, once removed.
I surely could use help with updates to the Elmer and Lydia Wells family descendants.
I have their children and some of their grandchildren, but nothing from your generation or beyond.
You could email me separately at:
KKKrumm at hotmail.com
(removed the spaces and insert an @)
