Hi!
Im Mervin Fonseca, currently working and staying in Singapore, im originally from New York, but my parents are from the Philippines. My great grandfather was Eulogio Fonseca of Agoo, La Union, Philippines. According to my own research, he got his looks from his father who i assumed was foreign, maybe Portuguese or Mexican, because he was too tall, fair skinned and pointy nose for a filipino of that time.

What i only know is as far as my great grandfather.
My great grandfather's name is Eulogio Fonseca. My grandfather is Bonifacio Dumondong[not sure with the spelling] Fonseca.

My grandfather was originally from Agoo, La Union, he married Martha Tenorio of Calamba, Laguna.
Nancy, I just found your posting from 2000 on Ancestry. My grandmother's maiden name was do Fonseca and she was from Trinta, Guarda, Portugal. She had a cousin who lived in Bridgeport many years ago. She and my grandfather emigrated from Portugal to RI in the early 1900's. If any of this sounds as if we might have some relatives in common, please let me know. Elizabeth Jones

I looked at the trees here for a Jean Fonseca b 1808 and they all have the Perera woman as his mother not his wife. His wife is listed as Helene Dufrene. As you say none of them have any documentation. You might try to contact them directly thru ancestry.com messaging system or by leaving a comment on the tree.

I am not related.

Regards,

Connie

It has been a long time since I have been on here. I believe we may be cousins. I have gotten a lot more done this time around. My family was in raceland in 1800 we moved around alot but really stayed between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. My grandfather born in Baton Rouge was Jean Fonseca and he married a woman from the Canary Islands who came here. They all had lots of children with the same names. Send me an email and I will send you the list billi.mike@yahoo.com

Fonseca's in Louisiana

Hi, I am researching my family and have hit a brick wall. Jean Fonseca born 1808 married Maria Theresa de la Conception Perera and died in 1855. He was born in Baton Rouge Louisiana and lived in Raceland. Some of his siblings were Fremin Sebastian and Candido Francisco. I have seen some things out there but no one has any records. I know Marie's parents were from the Canary Islands and I want to assume he was too but I have not seen any Fonseca's on the lists that came from there. I also do not understand the whole last name thing. How does that work when the husband dies and the woman remarries?

My mother name is Arcadia-Alicia Fonseca and she married john Arellanes and is still married to him. She lived in the Los angeles Area. I was born in August of 1973, I was born premature, should of been born in OCTOBER. I just want to know who he is. I'm not looking more. I would do a DNA test if not sure.

Re: Fonseca where are we from?

My Grandmother was Maria Filomene Ferreira Fonseca and she was born in a village called Calheta de Nesquim on Pico Island (one of the Acores). She spent several years in Massachusetts - where there are still many Fonseca's before marrying into the Pinto da Silva family - and moving to Oakland, California. (Married Artur Leao Pinto da Silva) - I have heard that the Fonseca name is Portuguese in orgin with possible roots in Arabic or Hebrew. I haven't done a lot of research - but I do know that it means "Fon" - fountain and "seca" dry - so it is like a seasonal stream -that is dry during part of the year and during the "rainy" season is a stream or creek. So maybe the name originated in an area that had seasonal streams....I don't know that could be anywhere. I am wondering if there are any other Fonseca's with ancestors from Calheta de Nesquim, Pico, Acores...who might be related to Maria Filomene Ferreira Fonseca - her father was Jose Ferreira Fonseca and mother was Maria (Laureana possible middle name) Ferreira. my email is maryellenoliphant@live.com

Hello! I'm looking for any information anyone might have about the Fonseca family of Pico island. My great grandmother was Maria Fonseca before she moved to America and married my great grandfather (Arthur Pinto da Silva.) My grandfather and great aunt have given me different information about her father's information (I think his name was Jose) One says that he was a whaler, the other says that he was in import/export. Either way he seemed to have made multiple trips to America. Maria's mother's maiden name was Ferreira

I have confirmed with a scholar of Sephardic Jews that the name Fonseca is a Sephardic Jewish name. I started working on this theory when my mother told me about her mother, the Fonseca. My grandmother would invoke the patriarchs and practice kosher customs. From what I can gather, the family does come from Portugal, although there is a theory that the original name was Von Seka and they came to Portugal from Hungary.

Right, but if you post an explanation, then the whole story, please!!

It is a Sephardic name (=> JEWS). It's meaning is:

Fonseca: Spanish and Portuguese: Topographic name for someone who lived by a spring that dries up. Font (well) + Sicca (fem.- dry). "Fonte" and "Seca" - in a direct translation in English means "dry spring" or "dry fountain".

Another citation:
"When the Roman Legions overran the Jewish nation, much of the Jewish population was sent into exile throughout the Roman Empire. Many were sent to the IBERIAN peninsula."

My Portuguese ex girlfriend's double-barrelled family name is Fonseca M*******. She's from Póvoa dos Mosqueiros, a small village in the district of Viseu.
So that description in that website (below) fits quite well in her case. Therefore, I think she has partially Jewish ancestors.

Well, for more details, here's the source: http://www.defonseka.com/pe0008.htm
