Don't know if you have gotten any further. This is just an FYI. I thought the Font name was originally from Portugal vs Spain. I don't remember where I picked that up, but it stuck. May help you find some loose ends that would lead to your family.

Hello, my Great-Grandmother was given up for adoption, she was adopted-I think? by the Reyes family, we found that her "real" surname is "FONT" and that her family came from 'Sephardic Jews (Spanish Jews)known as "Anusim". Her first name was Juaquina Reyes-Reyes, because she married a man with the surname Reyes, they lived mainly in Humacao,P.R. Her children were: Carla; Nando; Tomas;and Angelita. She died and is buried in Humacao....if you know of a secret adoption or illigitimate child given up for adoption in the font family let me know. Shalom...Lilly B.

If she is a daughter or Pedro and Arcadia, should have Collazo as last name... I will ask my parents and find out.~~~Just find out that Bienvenida is my aunt Nilda Collazo. Soto is her married last name.

Hello,
I am trying to figure out the difference between Font and Fonts family tree. I am not sure if the "S" became added along the way, but I am a Fonts. I have always been told that are ancestry came from Spain/France. ronbevharp1 can you shed any light on the difference? My father was born and raised in Cuba, but you mentioned the Fonts all left Cuba? I am thoroughly confused. Any help would be amazing!

Thanks,
Amber

Font is one of the truest, untouched surnames. Font is originally from Spain. The area North of Barcelona was once the "Kingdom of Aragon". My ancestor (7 generations) sailed from Spain (Gerona) to CuBa in the late 1700's. One Brother left CuBa for Puerto Rico, one stayed in CuBa then later went to New Orleans, LA. and one went to South America (Venezuela). Check that area of Spain. All French Font names have another letter (Fonte) or more (Fontaine). FONT is the root.

Fanny kept letters from my gt gt grandmother (Andrews mother who lived in Ireland) plus letters from Andrew to Fanny(his first wife) during the civil war. She also kept a newspaper article about S H Lighthill and mentions about the Hendricks. Eliza's mother and Father were Martha and Jonas.
searching for the Font family name origin.

Hello,

I'm originally from Cuba, came to the U.S. with my parents when I was 5yrs old. For many years, I thought that our family name originated in Spain, yet there is some confusion, perhaps it might have originated in France. Just wondering, what information anyone may have on this.

Re: font surname CUBA/Clotilde Font - Francisco Torres

Suzanne, I just found your Aug 2002 posting on Ancestry message board. What caught my eye was the fact that your husbands Font family was established in Cuba for years. I have been trying to trace our Font Family for 10 years and only recently have found more info than I had in 10 years on passenger list from Cuba to Florida. I have found many family names on this list. I have some facts then I have family stories. Fact:My great grandmother Clotilde Font was born on May 12 1877 (dont know where) and died Oct 1981 in Tampa Florida. Fact:She lived in Key West Florida before coming to Tampa. Clotilde MAY be from Matanzas Cuba. Fact:She married Francisco Torres(widower) who had 2 or 3 children with his first wife. Fact: Francisco Torres died in Key West, Monroe County, Florida in the 1918 Flu Epidemic. I was told by a family member that Clotilde's sister in (Cuba??) had a daughter by the name of Tedora and Tedora may have had an older brother by name of Daniel. I was also told that our Font family came from Spain went to Cuba then Key West Florida but don't know if this is true. Franciscos sons name on the passenger list is listed Fran co. Clotilde and Francisco had 2 daughters. Gregoria Torres (my grandmother) and Zelaida(my aunt). I found Clotilde, Franco, and Gregoria on a passenger manifest March 12 1906 departing Havana arriving Key West. Between 1906 and 1918 son Franco Torres
from Francisco first marriage was visiting in Cuba went horseback riding and he was never seen again.
I was also told that Franciscos daughter from first marriage went to visit in Cuba and became ill and was not allowed to return to Key West and stayed and lived family members from Clotilde Fonts family. If any Fonts or Torres think there is a connection please email me or post on here. I have posted my family tree on this website under Clotilde Font

Hello Beverly & Suzanne,
I was reading all about the Font families when I came across these messages. I believe Suzanne is my cousin's wife. Anyhow, the information that I have from my mother (who is now 80 years old) is as follows:
Andres Font Cepero came alone from Barcelona (Cataluna) Spain and settled in Cienfuegos, Cuba. He was the pharmacist at the local civil hospital. Unfortunately, I don't have dates. He married Rosa Marti. Their children were: Andres (who had 4 children)
Calixto (who was born in 1896 and died in 1936, had 4 sons)
Salvador (who had 1 daughter, Rosa Font Barreiro)
Jose
Maria Rosa (who had 1 son, Luis Martinez de la Masa Font) Hortensia (who had 1 son, Santos Vilches Font).
Let me know if you have any information, Beverly. I can't seem to find any Font, Marti or Cepero that would be of any relation. I know the Fonts have spread out.... Thanks!

Dear Anthony,

As you probably already know, southern Italy was for several hundred years part of the Catalan/Aragonese empire. If you study the history of the Font family you will find that the Fonts have a long tradition as merchants, and had business interests around the Mediterranean. It is very likely that your ancestors were either Catalan administrators or merchants who visited southern Italy, liked it and decided to stay. Technically, we are not "Spanish" but Catalans!

Hope this helps..... Your roots are closer to Barcelona than Calabria!
