I believe this family moved from Plattsburgh, NY to Woonsocket, RI between 1870 and 1880. Various events say this.

Marie/Mary Mathilde Fontaine b.27-Mar-1854 died 4-Jun-1883 in Woonsocket from consumption.
Joseph Fontaine b.24-May-1858 died 1-Jan-1896 in Woonsocket. Married Mathilda Dufresne then Louise Durand (info you gave me).
Julie Fontaine b.circa 1861, last found with her parents in 1880 (Woonsocket) with 1 year old son George Drew.
Elizabeth (Zoe) "Elise" Fontaine b.15-Feb-1863 d.22-Sep-1942, married Amable Miclette 20-Feb-1882.
Aimee Fontaine b.29-Jul-1866 Plattsburgh, d. 6-Feb-1867 Plattsburgh.
Charles Fontaine b.1-Apr-1868 Plattsburgh, last seen in 1870 census.
Lucie/Lucy Fontaine b.2-Apr-1871 Plattsburgh (1861?), d.15-Jun-1961, married 24-Aug-1891 St. Joseph, Burlington, VT to Jean Lapierre.
Edouard Fontaine b.2-Apr-1875 Woonsocket d.19-Feb-1910 Woonsocket, married Catherine Lynch 26-Nov-1894, then married Mary Marguerite ?? around 1896 (from 1910 census).

Some information from you, some from census records, some from Clinton county records and some from Rhode Island records.

I don't have a complete listing of the children or any photographs. However, there is a good resource you can purchase from:

http://www.nnyacgs.com/

You can either visit the library or purchase the St. Peter's Church Vital Records. Several of the children were baptised in St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. This book will certainly list any of the missing children. (I have 8 now, but the connection to Woonsocket is a little shaky, but I still think this is the same family).

Fontaine Family info St-Pierre-Jolys, MB

This is the info on Fontaine families that is noted in the first book published about the parish of St-Pierre (St-Pierre-Jolys, MB). The original info is taken from the parish's church records and is a list of the male membrs having founded families in the parish. It is not very complete when it comes to children, spouses and parents of spouses, but it might help you in your search by gfiving you other names to look for. I noticed that it has the names of two sons for "Henri fontaine" although I don't know whether or not these are the sons of Henri & Clarinda Lemoine.

FONTAINE, Ernest (son of Henri), b. 1892; m. in Ste-Agathe, MB 1917 to Yvonne Lataille, b. 1893.

FONTAINE, Napoleon (son of Henri - additional source lists Napoleon's mother as Clarinda Lemoine), b. 1896; m. in Ste-Rose-du-Lac, MB 1916 to Irene Labelle, b. 1898 (Additinal source notes that brothers Napoleon & Victor married two Labelle Sisters from Ste-Rose-du-Lac, MB).

FONTAINE, Alfred (son of Adolphe - additional source lists Alfred's mother as Adeline St-Martin), b. 1896 in Ste-Agathe, MB; m. in St-Pierre, MB 1915 to Eleonore St-Hilaire, b. 1898.

FONTAINE, Amedee (additional source lists his parents as Alfred Fontaine & Eleonore St-Hilaire), b. 1918 in St-Pierre, MB; m. 1941 to Antoinette St-Cyr of Ponteix, SK, b. 1915; labourer with 8 children.

FONTAINE, Armand (additional source lists his parents as Rodrigue Fontaine & Anna Carriere, and that he was born in "New York Settlement which originally was part of the initial parish of St-Pierre, MB and is currently known as Sarto, MB.), b. 1912 in St-Pierre, MB; m. 1940 to Annette Cote, b. 1915. Mechanic. (seems to have lived in Pine Falls, MB after his marriage).

FONTAINE, Hormidas (additional source lists his parents as Joseph Fontaine dit Bienvenue & Marie Ledoux), b. 1860 in St-Dominique-de-Bagio, QC; m. 1883 in St-Valerien, QC to Anastasie Beaudry, b. 1864 St-Dominique, QC. Arrived in St-Pierre-Jolys, MB in 1899. 16 children. (Additional source mentions family history related by one of the couple's daughters that the Fontaine family's ancestors originated in Grand-Pre, Acadie and had been forced to flee to Quebec following the Acadian deportations of 1755.)

FONTAINE, Jean-Baptiste, b. St-Damse, QC; m. 1892 in St-Valerien, QC to Rose-Anna Jodoin, b. St-Dominique, QC. Left Ste-Brigitte, QC for St-Pierre, MB in 1902 and eventually for Thibaultville (possibly old name for Richer, MB).

FONTAINE, Ovila, b. 1909; from Thibaultville (possibly old name for Richer), MB; m. 1933 to Yvonne Lambert, b. 1911, school teacher from St-Pierre, MB; Live in Winnipeg, MB. (this happens to be a great aunt of mine on my father's side. His parents weer Hormidas Fontaine & Anastasie Beaudry.).

FONTAINE, Rodrigue, married 1911 to Anna Carriere. (Additional source says Rodrigue born 1878 in St-Hyacinthe, QC to Solyme Fontaine & Marie-Rose Giroux, Anna born 1893 in St-Boniface, MB to Joseph Dolphis (Adolphe) Carriere & Cecile Perreault. In early 1912 they purhaseda homestead in SK and in March of 1912, a month after the birth of their eldest son Armand, Anna and her baby left to join Rodrique who had gone there ahead of them; the remainder of their 8 children were born in SK.)

Hi. I came across your postings regarding Henri Fontaine married to Clarinda Lemoine. I might have some information for you. I am linked to Clarinda via her mother Philomene St-Michel, having descended from one of her sisters. I've been looking for info on the branches of the St-Michel family that settled in Manitoba (they are linked to the Lemoine (Felix) et the Dorge (Edouard & possibly John/Jean) families that settled in Ste-Agathe, MB).

As noted in other related posts, Clarinda's parents are Philomene St-Michel (Circe dit St-Michel) & Felix Lemoine (Hus dit Lemoine). Philomène St-Michel, b. 8 June, 1851 Ste-Victoire-de-Sorel, QC; d. 28 Dec, 1917 Ste-Agathe, MB (father: Pierre St-Michel (Circe(Circé) dit St-Michel) mother: Angèle Antaya); m. 26 July, 1870 St-Pierre-de-Sorel, QC to Félix #2 Hus dit Lemoine, b. 20 April, 1851 Sorel, QC; d. 5 Aug, 1933 Ste-Agathe, MB (father: Félix Hus dit Lemoine mother: (Lucille ?) Basilice (Basilisse) Hus dit Cournoyer).

At the time of his marriage to Philomene, Félix was a widower, having previously wed Délima Gladu (I don't know if there were any children from his first marriage). The couple settle in Ste-Agathe, MB on April 24, 1890 (have to verify the source for this info) after having spent some time in Southbridge, MA where their daughter Marie-Ozina was born in Feb, 1890; they are living in Ste-Agathe, MB at the birth of their following child, Agathe in Jan, 1891. Félix Lemoine was the owner/operator of a large general store in Ste-Agathe, MB (there is a 1910 photo of the house/store kept by the Manitoba Archives); in 1909 his store became the location of the town's first telephone terminal/office.

Besides the info contained in the other posts in this thread, I have very little info on the Clarinda Lemoine/Henri fontaine union but would be interested in finding out more. This is all I have: Clarinda Lemoine, b. Aug 1873 in Sorel, QC & married June 1, 1892 in Ste-Agathe, MB to Henri Fontaine.

I have a bit of info on some fontaine families from the first St-Pierre-Jolys, MB parish that you might find of interest/helpful. I will post that in a separate posting.

Thanks for responding; you made me clear the cobwebs from my brain. I blundered! Just didn't thoroughly read what I already found.

1. Francis Fontaine Sr b. 16 Sept 1697 Ireland; d. 1749 VA; occupation in VA: Rector; married 1] abt 1720 England to Mary Glanisson

....2. Francis Fontaine Jr b. 1721 NC; d. 1783 NC; disinherited 1749; married Ann Jamima(h) Jasper

.......3. Francis Fontaine, III, b. 1746 NC; d. ?1783 SC; married

Francis Sr married 2] Susannah Brush

Notes from the Records of York County, Some Wills and Other Records, p. 426:
Francis Fontaine, "minister of York Hampton Parish in York County, Virginia." Will proved in York County, March 19, 1749. He names his children, Francis, Jr., the eldes, whom he disinherits, Mary, John, Thomas, James Maury, youngest son, to whom he gives all his books and manuscripts, and Judith Barber Fontaine. Wife Susannah Fontaine. His books were contained in "one large book case, one small do, 1 double book case of black walnut."

A letter written by Mary Ann Fontaine Maury in Sept 1745, taken from "Memoirs of a Huguenot Family", was a sister to Francis Fontaine Sr.

"...I wish it lay in my power to give you as pleasing a description of brother Francis, but to my great grief I
cannot express the dismal state of his family. As for his first wife she was, I believe, a good Christian, and
very careful to instil good principles in her children; but she was not a fit wife for this country, so by that
means, and by her ignorance of country business, my brother was almost ruined in his estate. She left one
girl and three boys, and if it had pleased God to have taken them with her, it would have been a great
blessing; for this woman he has married is a mighty housewife, but a cruel woman, and she has the entire
dominion over her husband, so he has been induced to cast off all paternal duty of his first children. His
eldest son Francis that was a boy of good parts, and was in the College, he bound to a carpenter, and
when he was sick and in necessity he had no bowels of compassion for him. They are going to bind John to
a carpenter. God in his great mercy hath lately taken his youngest son, named Thomas, from under her
tyranny. As for poor Molly, the negro women she brought with her are more indulgently used than she is.
My brother has a boy and girl by her, and he spares no pains with the boy, who is about seven years old,
who is a wonder for his age, while the others are castaways.
I did my best to get the poor girl away from her, but she was too serviceable.
I assure, dear sister, it has been a great grief to me to see one I loved so well, one in this station, a
shepherd to guide his flock, that he should be so inhuman to his own flesh and blood. He is grown an
enemy to all our families here, to ours especially, because I reminded him of his duty to his children, for
which good will of mine we are quite rejected, as are all others that do no like of her doings. She is his
only lawgiver, a terrible exchange for that of his Maker.
This is the melancholy state of his family, which I pary God in his own good time to rectify. I desire you
will show this relation to my brother John. The Lord preserve us all in a due sense of our duty in our
several stations, so that no considerations whatsoever may induce us to offend our maker, but that we may
work out our salvation with fear and trembling, which is the hearty prayer of her who remains with all
sincerity, dear sister,..."

Thanks again.

Re: Charles L. FONTAINE (born FREDERICK) 1862-1934 s/o Peter FREDERICK & Mary PORTREY

First let me introduce myself. My name is Kay Miller Davis, and I am the second daughter of Arthur (Earl) Fontaine Miller, who was the son of Arthur Earl, and Opal L. (Hanna) Fontaine. After their divorce (I do not have a date), my grandmother subsequently married twice more. Her last husband, Lloyd W. Miller of McPherson adopted my father, and his name was changed to Arthur Earl Miller, or Arthur Fontaine Miller. He used the latter name from the time of his adoption, however, upon my grandmother's death in 2010 we found the adoption certificate which listed my dad's middle name as Earl.

We have been trying to reconstruct my dad's birth family history for many years with no luck. We have been able to find the death records for Arthur Earl Fontaine in California in 1950, and the 1900 census listings for Charles L and Cornelia with both Leon and Arthur in Wichita, KS. I've also located parish records in Wichita which coincide with Arthur's birth. Before and after 1900, the trail I was following simply went cold. We knew the family moved to Kansas City because my grandmother knew the whole family, and pointed out a house there when we were on a family outing saying, "That's where Mr. Fontaine lived."

We also do know that my father lived with his Uncle Leon and his wife for a time after Opal and Arthur separated. He spoke fondly of the three daughters and his aunt--especially Francis (who he tried to name me for).

I wonder if I might access some of your family information? My father grew up not really feeling that he belonged anywhere except with our nuclear family. We wanted to be able to fill in some blanks for him before it was too late, but unfortunately he passed away suddenly in June of this year. I still feel driven to find out about our biological ancestors and relatives.

There are three of us: Gay Henrikson-Ladwig, me, and our brother Michael Taylor Fontaine. He returned to Dad's original name to carry on that family name, while I use Miller as my middle name to carry on his second family name.

Charles L. FONTAINE (born FREDERICK) 1862-1934 s/o Peter FREDERICK & Mary PORTREY

The mystery has been solved!!! If any descendants of Charles Leon FONTAINE have been trying to find his family tree, they've surely run into the same brick wall but from the opposite side. I hope the results of my research can help.

Charles Leon FREDERICK was born 7 Jan 1862 in Delphos, Allen, Ohio, to Peter FREDERICK and Mary PORTREY. Later that year the family moved to Richardson County, Nebraska, where they are found on the 1870 census.

The 1880 census for Falls City, Richardson, NE, lists Charles as boarding w/and studying law under August SCHOENHEIT.

Then he seemed to disappear from official records. Only two sightings indicate he was alive during this period.

1912 - In the Compendium of History Reminiscence and Biography of Nebraska, his brother John of Callaway, Custer, NE, states that Charles lived in St. Louis. StL city directories list a Charles FREDERICK, but he does not appear on the 1910 or 1920 census for that county.

Jan 1926 - Photo'd with other siblings at his father's funeral in Falls City, Richardson, NE.

In mid-2009, RZ of the Richardson County Historical Society gave me a copy of the society's newly published necrology. RZ had remembered that Charles was one of my brick walls -- a thousand thanks! The following information seemed sufficient to find him.

26 Dec 1934 - Death notice posted by his sister Carrie SCHULENBERG in the Falls City Journal (Richardson Co., NE) states that he died on 22 Dec in Kansas City, was buried Dec 23 in Appleton City, MO (St. Clair Co.) and was survived by sons "Leon of Kansas City and Arthur of Los Angeles."

Yet another prolonged search turned up NO additional information. Worse yet, I couldn't find corroboration of even one piece of data that appeared in the death notice.

Recently I had occasion to look yet again at the Richardson County plat maps for 1913 and 1924. This time I finally noticed that the ownership of Peter FREDERICK's original farm had changed to Chas. L. FREDERICK. He owned land, but where was he???

In previous searches of the online Missouri Death Certificates, I had used every variant of FREDERICK I could devise. This time, I entered only first name, county, and year and went straight to the F surnames, thinking there might be yet another variant. There he was -- with the name Charles Leon FONTAINE!!!

The death certificate confirmed that his body was to be taken to Appleton City, St. Clair, Missouri, for burial. Since my last search, Ancestry.com had added the cemetery records for that county to its database. Not only is Charles listed with full birth and death dates, but his wife is listed with her maiden name as well as birth and death dates.

Using this new information, I was able to find his marriage in 1889 (the first record under his "new" name) to Cornelia M. MAGUIRE and census records which track where they lived with their two sons, Charles Leon Jr. and Arthur Earl.

Charles Jr. and his wife Genevieve WEST had three daughters: Jeanne Marie, Helen Louise, and Frances. Genevieve died in Washington, DC, in 1959. Her death notice listed the following married surnames for her daughters: Jeanne ROHNBERG/REHNBERG, Helen PRUGH, and Frances LOVE.

Questions remain: Why did Charles use one name in Missouri and another for his land holdings in Nebraska? I can find no evidence of illegal activity. Why did he never tell either his birth family or his own family about his "other" surname? His son filled out the death certificate and knew Charles's father's given name and that he'd been born in France, but not his actual surname. Had his sister Carrie been in contact with him? If so, why didn't she know his assumed surname? Did changing his name require a legal procedure?

Strangest of all is another grave in the Appleton City Cemetery for a woman named Fanny FONTAINE who died in 1895 at 61 years of age. Theodore is the son of Adolph and Alida Herbert Fontaine. I believe shirley passed away in the 70's but the other 2 were in foster homes from @ 1947. Any help would be appreciated.

Napoleon Welcome also married Gerdie Laws (1st). Edith was second, Mary last. Since Edith and Napoleon married 1-Nov-1888 in Prescott, Franklin, MA (sorry I don't have the source, needs to be verified) Minnie is their child. Napoleon did not marry Mary Boyle until 1893 in my records.

Now for the Welcome and Fontaine confusion. Napoleon is on the Fontaine dit Bienvenu lineage, a descendant of Pierre Fontaine dit Bienvenu. It is believed the Bienvenu was attached as a soldier's nickname. Some of the descendants kept Fontaine, others kept Bienvenu which transaltes to Welcome.

Napoleon's parents were Simeon "Samuel" Fontaine dit Bienvenu and Marguerite "Maggie Lucia" Lussier. So either Napoleon Fontaine or Napoleon Bienvenu/Welcome could be used. Yes, they are the same person.

Do you have any information on the marriage date and place of Minnie Fontaine/Welcome and Arnold Carroll?

Fontaine in Mass

I was hoping someone could help me piece of bits of information together. In my research, I have come across a Minnie E. Fontaine (b. about 1889 in MA) who married a Arnold Carroll. There are three records of this marriage and (2) of the records say her mother was Edith Chase and father was Napolean Fontaine and (1) record says her mother was Mary Boyle but the father was the same. I have not been able to find any information regarding a Napolean Fontaine in Mass. Strange thing is there is a Napolean Welcome that married both an Edith Chase and a Mary Boyle, all dates and locations fitting within the estimated time frame. Any ideas on if there might be a connection here and what is might be is much appreciated!

I've yet to discover the reason for why Stanislas changed his name. One possibility is we have a persistent family rumour about a member of my G-Grandfather's family (Cleophas Fontaine was Stanislas' older brother) participating in the Louis Riel Rebellion and escaping across the border from Canada to USA at the very end of the War with possibly his Native American wife. These people were actively chased for years and this might explain the name change and the fact he moved his family so often.

And yes, Cleophas and Stanislas' parents were Edouard Fontaine and Angel Bourque. Edouard died in Junction City, Wisconsin 2 February 1887 and Angele died 17 February 1894. In 1898 Cleophas moved to Canada while his sister Delphine Durand remained in Stevens Point, WI. By this time Stanislas was living with his daughter Julia Fiedler in Kansas City, Kansas with their daughter Julia Fiedler. Sometime before 1922 Stanislas returned to Sherbrooke, Quebec to live with one of his daughters. His wife Julia Arseneault predeceased him. He died 28 October 1922 and was buried under his legal name of Stanislas Fontaine. It all fell together when I requested his obituary and the researcher said there was no obit for a Stanislas Fontaine although there was one for a Georges Bourque who had a wife Julie Arseneault on the same day. The information on the obit and in the Drouin death record are identical. So at that point I was sure my information was right. At least as sure as you can be in this genealogy stuff!! So I am persuing the possible Riel connection to see if there is any record of him. I cannot find a marriage record for Stanislas & Julie/Julia Arseneault although I believe they were married in Massachusetts or that area.

Any thoughts???

That is some name change! I would like to know how you made the connection. Also, which St-Jean/John in Quebec are we discussing? Do you have the parents of Stanislas Fontaine? I'm trying to make a family connection.

Just found a possible candidate. Parents of Stanislas could be Edouard Fontaine and Angelique Bourque. So taking the mother's maiden name is a clue. But why? Running from the law? Interesting.

Stanislas Fontaine (AKA Georges Bourque)married Julie Arseneault in Mass. or Vermont sometime before their oldest daughter Julia Fontaine was born in 1855 . When they moved from Ashland, Mass they went to Stevens Point, Wisconsin where the whole family changed their last name to Burke and Stanislas changed his first name to George. Although they called themselves by the name Burke all Church records for births, marriages and deaths in Stevens Point were entered under their legal name of Fontaine. Julia Fontaine married Adolphus Denecourt in Stevens Point on 28 October 1869 and they had one son John Paul in Stevens Point before they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. Three more daughters were born to Adolphus and Julia before he disappeared and probably died. Julia most likely was a widow and then married Edward J. Fiedler in Jackson, Kansas City, Missouri on 27 December 1886. They went on to have 4 more children and lived in Kansas City, Kansas until they died. Stanislas Fontaine died in St. John's, Quebec and while his church burial record was listed under Stanislas Fontaine his obituary was under the name of Georges Bourque. I cannot find a death record for his wife Julia Arseneault although I know from his obituary she died before him..... Stanislas Fontaine was my Great-Grand-Uncle, younger brother of my Great-Grandfather Cleophas Fontaine....
