Hi Gaye Got your reply. Of course you know that Forbes was the 4th most common name in Perthshire in 1700's and 1800's.
I am trying to trace my Forbes from the early 1800's backwards.Jean Cameron's father was Donald b1781 at Logierait and her mother was Isabella Fraser. Keep in touch when your pc is up and running, we may be able to help each other.
Regards Alan

Hi again Alan,
Sorry I made a slight error in my last posting - I am using my I Pad as my computer, with al the specific detail in is at the'Computer Dr' for a couple of days so was going on memory. It is Ann Cameron who married Donald Forbes and Jane Cameron who married Donald M cGregor. My g-g-grandfather was a John Forbes bc 1795 and his son was my great grandfather AlexanderForbes who emigrated to N.Z. in 1861. Alex's sister Ann married an Alexander FARQUHARSON and they emigrated to Sth Australis ant 1883, and lived inBute. I am in contact with, and know well, a Farquharson line g-grandson who lives in Belair, Adelaide. My g-grandfather always said hecame from Killiecrankie which of course is between Blair Atholl and Pitlochry. I , too have visited the area, but in 2003 and found quite a bit. Will be able to share more specific info whe I get my computer back.
Gaye in Rotorua, N.Z.

I found your post today and had to reply. My grandmother was Jeannie Forbes b1877 in Pitlochry Moulin Parish. Her father was John Forbes b1850 in Moulin. He was a joiner to trade and my grandmother told us that he was a joiner on the Blair Castle Estate.
I have been back to Pitlochry to see where she came from. I stayed at Pitlochry in a B&B where the husband of the owner was the resident professional at Blair Castle Golf Club and was privilaged to have a game with him.
Hi Alan, Thanks for your enquiry but I believe we have different threads as the dates don't marry up. For a marriage in 1805, I don't have any Alexdanders in the right age bracket. I have an Alexander born to James Forbes and Agnes Spaldie - born 1799 (so too young) and the only other Alexander I have is brother to James Forbes (parents Alexander Forbes and Bettie Thompson) born 1756 so too old. All my Forbes' are West Lothian (Bo'Ness & Ecclesmachan) so if you have any alexanders from that area, we might connect further back. The earliest Alexander I have been able to find is Alexander Forbes born 31/8/1670 whose parents were John Forbes and Isobel Mershell. Good luck with your searching.

Shelagh

I am stuck trying to find his parents who i assume was another Alexander going by the name pattern.I have it documented from the above to 2012.
Its been a while since your entry but worth a try
alan

Hello,

Have just noticed the two listings re Donald FORBES & Ann CAMERON. This couple are my three times great grandparents - have documentary evidence to prove this - their son John Forbes, b 30 August 1795, Moulin, Perthshire - is my two times great grandfather. I guess it is possible that the family may have then moved to Inverness as I have been unable to locate any other children of this marriage apart from Margaret Forbes, b 29 August, 1791 also in Moulin Parish. a son named Donald would fit the Scottish naming pattern as I have the father of Donald Forbes [who married Ann Cameron] as John Forbes. Would love to share information.

Gaye Ruru in New Zealand.

Betty:
I'm curious if your family and mine are the same. We have a letter from a Duncan Forbes to his father, who is only listed as "A. Forbes." Duncan was born in Kinnaird, Perthshire (although I've also seen it listed as Blair Atholl) on April 28, 1798. His family emigrated to New York around 1801, but Duncan was left behind because he was deemed too young to survive the crossing. About 15 years ago, my dad did some research and did a family tree showing Duncan's siblings as Belle, Peter, and Janet, who married a Robert Ballantine around 1805 and emigrated with him to New York around 1806. We think we are descended from Robert and Janet. This seems to match up pretty closely with your family tree, assuming our Belle is your Isabel.

Here is the link to the Forbes project: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/forbes/default.aspx?sect...

Group One (1) is my Forbes group; however, it shares a haplotype with several other groups. What determines matches is the actual alleles

John, Clemmon, William, Arthur, Enoch, Clemment, Jacob N, and Duncan de Forbes are listed in group one; Wesley Forbes b. 1787 Pitt, NC. d. 1853 Leon, FL, who is listed at the bottom of the page, is only 1 marker off from Enoch, 2 or 3 markers off from the other Pitt, NC, Forbes. Their common ancestor is assumed to be about 1710. This is at the 67-marker level. There is another surname match for this group, however, a person who matches Enoch perfectly at the 67 marker test. We are all in touch and feel that the non-genetic "event" happened sometime around the War of 1812.

You have not said what testing agency you used nor for how many markers your test yields results. You also have not stated your Forbes genealogy. If you notice, the groups tend to fall out around location although our group has Jacob N Forbes of New York and two Aberdeenshire Forbes.

I suggest that you read the articles posted on the Family Tree DNA sight.

It is not uncommon for someone of one surname not to match anyone else with that surname. We have a similar situation with my Bryan cousins' test results. The test has determined a Wales ancestral background; however, no other Bryans have tested to Wales. We feel that the name situation very likely happened prior to the 13th century when surnames came into vogue or it happened sometime prior to the 1770 birth of my Bryan ancestor.

I suggest that you gather as much data as you can about your ancestor, post his genealogy, extend his Y-DNA test if necessary, etc.

It doesn't really surprise me that there is no match in the database because they only match you with people who could be a match within five generations. I know our tree for that long and no one, who is a Forbes is registered. Other Forbeses would be more distantly related and therefore I thought the Y would be a help. But now that I have it I don't know what to do with it to see if it matches any other Forbes families

what was the Haplotype. I am not really sure how to work the family name group. I clicked this off for both me and my brothers dna but don't know what I am supposed to do after that to find a match neither of us has any matches with Forbes in the general data base though,

yes. My Forbes from Pitt, NC, are in the Family Y-DNA Forbes project. They are group One, and match Duncan Forbes of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Go to the projects on Family Y-DNA. Unfortunately, the administrator of the Forbes project has not done anything with it in several years. My Wesley Forbes' results are still not up with the group although he and his brother Enoch Forbes are a match.

Please send me a photo of yourself too. I was able to trace your tree to you and found you were born in 1944, married to Mr Garrison and have 4 children. I'm about your age and have 3 children (3 teenagers!!), all adopted from China. Oh and by the way it's certainly ok that you are part of the family, we're honored.

Hi Mary

Mary Baird Timmoney was born in Montreal Canada on the 19 May 1869 as Mary Eliazbeth Baird. She married Peter Timmoney on 9 Aug 1887 at St Patricks Church in Montreal. Her mother was Catherine O'Reilly who was born in County Westmeath in Ireland. I believe that Catherine was from Clonmellon but I have yet to confirm this. Her father was John Baird who was also born in Ireland but I don't know where. Catherine and John were married in Montreal on 7 November 1859 at St Georges Anglican Church. Catherine was John Baird's second wife, his first wife's name was Mary Eliza Leonard.

Mary had 6 brothers Thomas, Michael, William, Robert, Samuel and Albert. She also had a half sister Dora and 2 half brothers John and James.

Catherine O'Reilly is my 2nd Great Grandfathers sister. Her father's name was Charles and her mother's name was Margaret Fegan. Catherine had 1 brother Patrick, 2 sisters Bridget and Ann. I believe that they all emigrated from Ireland about the time of the famines either shortly before 1847 or shortly after.

I hope this helps a little.

Thanks
Kevin O'Reilly
