Feel free to send me an email directly or working through the thread is fine also.

Kim-

James Forsyth and Clementia Knox are my 6th-great grandparents on my paternal grandfather's side. I have their son, David Macllen marrying twice, to an Agnes Campbell and a Margaret MacDonald (which coincides with a family story that the feud between the Forsyths and MacDonalds was settled with a marriage).

Dear cousin,

Here is an update for your use/information!

So far we know that my great great grandmother, Alice Forsyth Metcalf Godfrey along with her brother George, are the two children certified by court as being the children of Thomas Charles Forsyth at the time his estate needed to be probated.

We also know that in 1855 Thomas Charles Forsyth divorced Luahiwa Forsyth (his wife)...for adultery. (The cover sheet of this court record has the name Nuuhiwa instead of Luahiwa.) He says she went out one night with a Mr. Pohaku and came back pregnant. As he said that, she was in court listening and holding a baby which grandpa insisted was not his child.

This divorce issue has been posted on the internet (originally) by a cousin. The two-children-of -Thomas-Charles information may be new to the internet. I now post that tidbit to clear up whatever questions may still linger on that issue with cousin lines/researchers.

We know from our research experience that: Women who had children in olden times saw such children given their (birth mothers') surname, even if the children were not the keiki of the birth mothers' legal/current/past husbands.

Hence, four or five children of grandma Alice's children by Mr. Frank Godfrey, became Metcalfs despite the fact that grandpa Frank Metcalf testified in court that the keiki of his estranged wife were not his children, but that of Mr. Godfrey. Later those same children, if survived into adulthood, changed their names to Godfrey. I am pleased to say that I am in communication with three of the Godfrey descendants today; they are my Ohana cousins.

Feel free to email me at wailana21@earthlink.net. Or call me at 944-6080. If you ever are on Oahu, let me know. I would be pleased to meet you.

Love and aloha, from Puanani

Presently, we watch over grandma's Metcalf plot at Kawaiaha'o Church cemetery. We believe that many more iwi are buried there besides the few for which we have burial documents. We know: Great great Alice Alike N. Forsyth Metcalf, baby Alice, Everline/Eveline, great great grandpa Frank Metcalf, grand uncle William Thomas Metcalf and Step-great great grandpa Frank Godfrey are buried there. We look for the burial sites of Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa Forsyth (unless we get factual proof she is elsewhere), Ka'ilikapu'olono, Ka'ili'alakua'olono, Ka'ili'kuike'olono, and Theophilus Sabin Meka Metcalf. Why? We wonder if their iwi might have been buried there as well under the cloak of darkness, for we know such things were done in the early 20th century and grandma Alice was more than capable of such- especially because other Forsyth/Metcalf/Godfrey cemeteries/mausoleums/yard grave sites were being emptied for economic reasons and the Metcalfs/Forsyths/Godfreys had to move iwi to more secure burial sites. The family always considered the Kawai'aha'o Plot, known as the Metcalf Plot...to be the most secure. Alice was the owner; it is natural to assume that she would gladly take possession of homeless iwi of any relations, because as long as she lived...she was the most stable and "able" to house iwi.

Take care, Nani/Puanani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto
Aloha, at this time after much research with my own cousin lines, I find that what you say does not match what we have discovered...and yet, only God Almighty knows the absolute truth, so I am keeping all you say along with what we know. Mahalo, for sharing.

At this time I think my great great great grandmother's name was Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa Nuuhiwa Naohiaikamalu. We have her entire genealogy from her on to her Mahi/Keawe/Palena/'I-kanaka ancestors. Her genealogy goes to many of the islands in the archipelago and ends up, guess where? With the bluebloods of the Kingdoms of Kau'ai and O'ahu. Hope this helps you at this time.

Important: We care not if we are wrong later on. We seek Truth, where ever it comes. Much aloha, Nani/Puanani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto

Excuse, dear Ohana cousin. Not even sure if I ever responded to your 19 Jun 2009 message, 2 and 1/2 years ago. I was entering a very hectic/challenging period of my life that I have only recently come out of. So let's see if I can do a better job at responding at this time.

1. Your ohana is definitely a cousin ohana to mine. I think you definitely know this.

2. I think you also know that Grebell is also my cousin. Her father, John Tilton, is the younger brother of my father, Frank Alana Kini Tilton.

3. M. Cobb-Adams is Margaret Cobb-Adams and is my aunt. She sometimes watched me to relieve my mom and dad so they could concentrate on the other three.

4. Frank Palaika Tilton and Ana/Anna/Alana Achong/Ah Chong are my grandparents. Grandma's real surname is Choy, though only the Motherland Chinese loyal to both China and America in the 20th century seemed to have known this.

5. Frank Lalio/Lalionui Tilton was my great grandfather. His first wife was Ester/Esther/Ekekela Kaha; we regard this first wife as our dynastic grandmother, not Palaika's biological grandmother, but in the 19th and 20th century when some Tiltons still hoped America would give back what it took like Great Britain had done in the mid-19th century, this dynastic mother was major- much more than Palaika's biological mother, La'a Hanalei Kamaumu/Kamaunu/Kamaulu.

5. Frank Lalio/Lalionui Tilton's parents were William Tilton, I and Kanekapolei Miller Mela. This great great grandmother had several other aliases to secure anonymity during the latter 19th century when the missionaries/western leaders in the Kingdom of Hawaii were insisting that all marriages be secured by palapala rather than just kanaka style. Yes, some lines call this great great grandmother Kanekapolei, Kanekapolei Nauku/Nauuku...for that was a more acceptable name for her under the rule of Righteous-leading western men in the government who disliked some of the kanaka marriage/mating practices of ancients. To date, I have never ever seen any proof that this Nauku/Nauuku ever really existed. I invite any Ohana relative to share any proof they may have. Please.

6. Kanekapolei Miller Mela and her brother, Kahumoku Miller Mela, seem to have been credited with two fathers: Alika P. Miller Mela Jr. and a Nauku/Nauuku. We know Alika existed; in fact he was a konohiki. Nauku
is a mystery to me. Most cousin lines agree that the mother was Kahinu Miller Mela.

7. Alika P. Miller Mela, Jr. and Kahinu Miller Mela had the same parents. We
have proof of this. They were Alexander Alika Miller Mela, Sr. with Kanekapolei I Kanekapolei, daughter of Kauakahiakua 'o Lono with Umiaemoku, middle daughter of Mahi/Mahiolole with Kanekuka'ailani.

8. Dates? Personally, I do not trust them when they are assigned to ali'i/maka'ainana who lived before Kamehameha I and Kanekapolei I Kanekapolei.

Before then...the kanaka maoli relied on genealogist memories and the kanaka did not have a dating system like the west. They dated by relative kingdoms with well-known ali'i.

For humans in the 19th/20th/21st centuries to assign dates to ali'i/maka'ainana they never met and only read about after 1825 when the kanaka began to put their memories on palapala, is just a bit foolish, in my mind.

Much aloha, to an awesome webmaster....from an Ohana cousin,
Nani/Puanani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto

Yes, and all this for me and perhaps for your can be locked down by the Great Mahele page in the State Archives. Walk into that building on the right back side of Iolani Palace, and ask for the Black Binder on the Great Mahele. Look up Alika Mela, konohiki during Kamehameha III's reign.

Specifically: This great great great Miller Mela/Tilton grandfather of mine is an ancestor of all the part-Hawaiian Tiiltons from William, to Frank Lalionui, to Frank Palaika, to Frank Alana Kini, to Frank Johnbull, and much more for the adults today are still naming their keiki Frank with different kanaka middle names.
Re: Thomas Forsyth - Hawaii

Thomas Charles Forsythe was my great great great grandfather. I have a probate document that certifies after research by a government official that he was the legal and biological father of my great great grandmother, Alice Alika N. Forsyth Metcalf.

Do you know anything about his legal wife from 1851 to 1855, Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa Forsyth? She could be, if my kupuna are correct, my great great great grandmother.

We are guessing that she was most likely the sister of my cousin Luahiwa's biological mother. This is because another cousin line says their kupuna taught them that Luahiwa and Kulaia/Kulaiwa were actually sisters. No proof of this has ever been found, that I know of.

However, we do have other cousin lines that say that the name Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa was an Occidental name given this great great great grandmother of ours- a western/foreign cover name that could be believed by descendants and foreigners who lacked authentic knowledge of her true ancestors and ohana families, a name that would then also cue perceptive kanaka descendants who knew that there was still a grain of truth in these names that at least pointed in the correct direction of her ancient Kingdom/family before her Kingdom family was taken over peaceably by a cousin line from another island Kingdom, then conquered by a second cousin line from yet another island Kingdom, only to again be conquered by a third cousin line from yet another island Kingdom. Well, that original Kingdom from which this grandmother originates seems to be the Kingdom of Kaua'i, but research continues to actually reveal the exact genealogical path to take to go from Luahiwa grandma to the Luahiwa Mo'i of the Kingdom of Kaua'i. So much for my maternal lines. Right now, my paternal line at least shows that such is very very possible and true, for we can document a path from this maternal grandmother through the Mahi/Palena/'I clans/families that then take a left turn from the Big Island of Hawaii, straight to the Kingdom of Kaua'i. Fascinating. With respect to her husband, Thomas Charles Forsyth, my great great great haole grandfater: I know a little, per documents, but what I do know is either non-descript or negative information for his and his image. That is why I do not share. Aloha, until I find the information you are seeking. Frankly speaking, we who are part/full Hawaiian spend a lot of time researching the ancestors who set foot in Hawaii Nei and interacted in vital ways with the kanaka maoli. We usually cannot find time to do as much work with respect to our ancient ancestors who lived on the mainland or in Europe and never made it in any significant fashion....to Hawaii Nei. Maybe sometime in the future? Aloha from Nani/Puanani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto

The Luahiwa name is very well known especially in Lahaina, Maui...Molokai.... as well as on Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. According to Fornander, one Ali'i Chiefess...Luahiwa 'a Kanealae 'o Kekaulike Kahekili comes from the Royal family of ancient Hawaii for at least the Kingdom of Maui. Her father and husband were both Moi of Maui in their respective and subsequent... Times.

Our "grandmother" Luahiwa seems to also come from Lahaina, Maui...according to oral family history.

Some cousins say Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa Forsyth comes from the Kamehameha line. Well, if one believes authorities from ancient Hawaii- to the effect that Moi Kahekili was Kamehameha the Great's biological father.....yes- but only if Luahiwa Kulaia/Kulaiwa Forsyth was the same person as the awesome Ali'i Chiefess Luahiwa 'a Kanealae 'o Kekaulike!

Such a "fact" would make Kamehameha the Great a stepson of Luahiwa 'a Kanealae 'o Kekaulike-or in accordance of ancient Hawaiian practices, the son of this Luahiwa...because all wives of the same husband considered all children from their shared husband....to be all .....their children. Children were so treasured, sharing was the norm.

Do you have any information on your side that you might share with cousin Luahiwa and me. Please.

Sincerely, Punani...The Conch Herald....Jesus is Lord!

I can share the following: Luahiwa Kulaia seems to be an occidental/western name and not her true kanaka sacred name. This great great great grandmother of mine comes from an ali'i nui/warrior family. Hence, the need on the kanaka maoli side... to hide her true name when she married a haole, Thomas Charles Forsyth- to ensure the things that might hurt her image/ano as the Kingdom of Hawaii became increasingly foreign/western, would not also hurt the image/ano of her ancient kanaka maoli family. At this time the families hope to keep her true name secret/kapu'd for another generation at least. Nani/Puanani Matsumoto

Sorry, do not know enough about this great great great great grandfather of mine that I can share. Yes, other cousins seem to know/publish more than I do, but I would not share what they say without proof that what they say is true. Will share, when I can be sure what I say can be proved. The information I have Oral Family History and/or document proof for, is about negative things, and I do not want to share until I actually get the documents again somewhere in storage. Then again, I wonder if even then I will share. Do not like to unnecessarily speak ill of my ancestors. We already let out facts pertaining to his estate/will and his divorce; it saddened us, but it was necessary to prove our right to call him our blood/genetic/koko grandpa.
Does anyone know of Charlotte Fyfe (1801-1876)born in Fordyce, Banffshire, Scotland, married to Alexander Forsyth (1795-1869)lived in Banff, Banffshire. Mother of Isabella, Alexander, Elspet, Alexander, John, William, Charlotte and Lawrence (my great grandfather). I can find no record of her mother or father, and later records show one Ann Duncan Gray being mother of these children as well as many Gray children. I am trying to determine the connection between the Forsyths and the Grays.
I'm also looking for the wife of my great grandfather Lawrence Forsyth (1838) born in Banffshire, possibly spent time in Yorkshire, lived in Guardgridge in Fife, and retired to Edinburgh. His wife's name could be Annie Ross. Any light you can shine upon these puzzles would be very appreciated.

Was pleasantly surprised to see picture of Kirk O' Shotts.
Though now in Australia, I was born and bred in Salsburgh,
and attended the Sunday School and later became a Church member and Choir member of Kirk O' Shotts. I have many
photos of it, including calendars and my "mouse mat".
My mother was a Forsyth who was born in Edinburgh.
My parents and grandparents are buried in the cemetery.
To whom was the headstone in memory?
Regards,
Jessie Meaklim (nee Wood).
