Male or
Female? I will check for further specifics today. Hope I can help!
Karin

Hello,
Your post has me wondering about my info. My grandfather was William Ira Fort. My mother had a portrait of W.A. Fort, my g-grandfather. We were given information that was searched by a geneologist, telling us his name was William Allen Fort. In my own research, I have found that he did marry Matilda Hearn, as it states in the report given to us by the research paid for. As I've been told, and from information given to us, W.A. Fort was a Dr. As you had in your information, he treated a woman for a cold, who had been exposed to small pox. I know that later in life he left Matilda, went to Fl. and supposedly married my g-grandmother Willie Gray. They had three children befor they both died. Allen W. William, (my grandfather,) and a sister Mary. Willie was a Native American. Born in South Carolina. So I assume she was Cherokee, although I was told she was Siminole. If any of this makes sense to you please send me a reply. I pray my family didn't pay some one who gave us the wrong information!
Thank You,
Karin

Hi Karin,

According to my Fort Family in New York book, there were 4 Fort brothers who left France during the 1600s. Two went to England and 2 went to Holland. The two who went to Holland eventually came to America. It also states that there were other Fort Families who went to Canada. I have Jan Fort and many of his descendants on my website at www.angelfire.com/ga4/myhayes_family/

Richard

Having a hard time with the names of the immigrants who actually came here. I have found that Elias died soon after his arrival. If you can shed any light on my family hunt, it would be appreciated greatly!
Thank You,
Karin

Hi Karin,

The Allen Fort (1760-1798) in my tree was my GGGG grandfather. My grandfather was Wesley C. Fort, whose line goes back in this order: John Jackson Fort (father), Jackson W. John Fort (grandfather), Josiah C. Fort (great grandfather), and Allen Fort (GG grandfather). I'm not seeing a William Ira as Allen's brother.

I have as Allen's siblings: Micajah Fort and Elias B. C. Fort. Allen's half siblings: Wiley Fort, Nancy Ann Fort, Spear Fort, and David Fort.

I can't say that this information is completely accurate because I don't have Allen's mother's name, only his step mother, therefore, I can't verify that they are not the same person.

My Allen's brother Elias had a son, Micajah, who had a son, Garrison Patrick. Garrison had two sons named James Allen (b. 1817) and William (b. 1823), however I don't have a middle name for him and can't verify that he is your William Ira. It could be that this is where our two lines split, making Elias and Allen's father Micajah (1734-1788) our common grandfather. This is just a guess. It gets so confusing when so many generations use the same first names. :-)

The book "A Family Called Fort" that everyone is talking about was written by Homer T Fort, Jr., and Drucilla Stovall Jones and published in 1970. It has been out of print for many years, but you can request a reprint for $129 from the Higgins Book Company.

http://www.higginsonbooks.com/genfo040h.html

Amazon also has a copy for $131.75.

http://www.amazon.com/Fort-Family-Called-Descendants-Virgini...

It is easily the most complete reference of the Fort family line, however being published so long ago, it is certainly not current. I was born in 1969, but didn't make it into the book as it had already gone to the publisher by that time.

I hope this hasn't been too confusing for you. Personally my head starts to spin when I get into the 1700 and 1800s. Too many people with the same name! :-)

Lydia Holmes Fort had to be married to Drury Fort prior to 1748 when William Holmes her father is listed as a father in law to Drury Fort on the will as co-executor. Therefore she would have been way to old to marry John Sawyer after Drury died in 1788. I believe it is a daughter by the same name that married John Sawyer.

Does anyone have any information on a Richard Fort that was born in 1805 in NY and died Oct 15, 1861 in Winona, MN? I have 2 wives, Jane Fairchild and Betsey Harrington, along with 10 children. I'm not sure which children belong to which wife, but I do know that the death certificate I have for his son Charles, lists his mother as Jane Fairchild. I know this could be wrong, but I have nothing else to go by. I don't have any info. further back than him and I would LOVE to find that stuff out. I'm also looking for information on the families down from him, I have a lot of names, but I don't know who they all go with. I would be willing to share the info I do have, if someone would be willing to do the same for me. Thank you!!

Hello,
looking for info on my great-aunt Laura Fort. She was born in 1906 in Watertown and lived there with her family. Laura was a talented dancer and contortionist and she performed in the Watertown Follies and vaudeville. She married Walter O. Shaw in the 1920's. and in 1943 her father's obituary lists her as "Mrs. W. C. (Laura) Hill of this city." We lost track of her after that.
Here it is, over a year later, and I'm just now seeing your message! Yes, we are of the same Fort/Feurt line. We branch off, way back, from Francis/Francois Feurt/Fort where your line goes off through Francis, Jr. and mine goes off through Benjamin (1752-1838). Both families, of course, came from New Jersey, but they also both went to Virginia (Tyler County area) before yours went to Iowa and mine went to Indiana. Really neat to know this. I love this line. My grandmother, Nell Jewel Fort, was our last Fort. Her brothers both died in their 20's, so no more Fort's. Has yours continued? Thanks for writing, and I apologize for not seeing and answering sooner!
Pam Robinson

Can you tell me if any progress has been made on this project? I am a descendant of Elias Fort (1700-1766) through the following line:

James Wendell Fort (Dolores E. Scheller),
Wesley Cullum Fort (Lula E. Agnes Nicholson),
John Jackson Fort (Margaret C. Bagwell),
Jackson W John Fort (Sara Murphy Head),
Josiah C Fort (Dorothy Dolly Brantley),
Allen Fort (Sarah Sally ?),
Micajah Fort (?),
Elias Fort (Olive Pittman).

I believe this to be correct as my uncle Robert C. Fort (dec.) had also published books regarding our family tree, and these records, I believe, come from him. However, with so many family members having the same name, it can sometimes be confusing.

At any rate, I would certainly be interested in obtaining a copy of "A Family Called Fort, Vol II" as a companion to my copy of the original publication. I am hopeful that your vision has come to fruition, and I wish you much success.

Thank you, Wendy N. Fort

African American Fort's (Ford's) from Tuscumbia, Alabama

I am trying to locate information on my grandfather, Solomon Ford, an African American, who is believed to have been born in Tuscumbia, Alabama around December 1894-1896. Family members tell me that he had at least one sibling, a brother named David. My research has also uncovered a Solomon Fort who was born in the same time period in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Solomon Fort's mother is listed as Patsy Fort and she had five children (two of which are Solomon and DAvid Fort). Solomon Ford was married to Willie Lee Hogan (also from Tuscumbia, Alabama). This was the second marriage for Willie Lee, she was first married to Walter Smith, who was possibly born in Tennessee. Solomon and Willie Lee Hogan were married in Detroit, Michigan in 1922. Solomon and Willie Lee had five children (2 girls and three boys, two of the boys are twins). Solomon Ford worked at Ford Motor Company and was also a travelling preacher (denomination unknown), who started churches and/or preached in Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Windsor and Ontario Canada. Solomon Ford died at the age of 33 in 1929 when his twin sons were about 3 months old. He died at Detroit Receiving Hospital (possibly in April 1929). Since then, his children have resided in both Detroit and New York City. It is possible that Solomon and Willie Lee Hogan were childhood friends or at least knew of each other. I am interested in any information about the Ford's of Tuscumbia, Alabama. By the way, I am a Ford that lives in Lexington, KY, but I am unware if I am related to any Ford's that reside in Danville or Lexington, KY.

Based on my research, I am guessing that their is a possibility that my grandfather may have been born a Fort, or the name may have been purposely or inadverently changed to Ford. Hopefully this information will aid others in their research or help me with mine. Thank you all.
