Hi, Bridget! I'm so excited to read your message board. Believe it or not, it's 2am here in Florida, and I have been searching for a long time to find the location of the Fortner Farm of Elisha and Sarah Day Fortner (about 200 acres). It was great to learn about Jonathan, his father. Elisha and Sarah are my great-great grandparents. I have been researching them for 2 years. My dad, who is 92, and I am going to fly into TN next week, so we can locate this land and also try to find the exact locations of the birthplaces of my grandparents. (Last year we did the cemetery search.) So far I was only able to search for the land deed thru the courthouse. They could not give me a location, so I thought I would try the historical society in Tazewell. I will go door to door if needed to find these places. I would love to meet/talk/email with you. Hopefully, we both can fill in some blanks. My email is maridelmeisberger42@gmail.com. If you reply, I'll give you my personal phone no. too. Thank you!

I have been unable to locate anything like that. Exccept for the apparent date of death for Pamela Bussey listed as 08/05/1843 I have not been able to locate her except for a possib;e connection in the 1790 or 1818 census for a John Bussey. Except for what is here and their tombstones at Cane Creek, it is hard to find some of that info on them. I do know Sarah's mama was Sarah but Permilian's mama was Pamela from everyting I can find.

Sapa is about 18 miles from Starkville, Oktibbeha county, Mississippi (home of Mississippi State University where you can buy the best cheese in the country--can you tell I'm a bulldog?) I am going to send your comments to my cousin who is also researching this family. She is descended from Permelia Fortner and William Riley Thomas.
I'm not familiar with Eupora. It is it in Miss ir Alabama? The woods are literally full of Firtners around here. I know Ansel had returned from Mississippi by 1855 when his daughter, my G G GRandmother married Wm. R. Thomas in the Warrior Ala area. They later owned land just across into Blount County. My Uncle Silas's wife was a Robbins, Asvannah whose mother appears to have been an Edna Fprtner I think. I have not fully unraveled Edna yet. Her sister, Sarah Ann Frances Fortner married a Sharit, ,my great grandmother's brother of there are inumerable descendants still all over jefferson County today. I had info that they had stopped and resided in St Clair County, adjacent to Jeffco to the east on the way to homestead in Mississippi until Ansel returned to Jeffco. My granddaddy always said Permelia had told them all that her grandaddy was a full blooded Cherokee, the Anglo name is rather common among some native Americans of the time. DNA may prove interesting if it could ever be done.

IN answer to your post; Ansel has many many descendants in Jefferson County Alabama, he was my GX3 Grandfather. His first wife was reputed to be named Pamela Bussey but she died supposedly in 1843. I have some in my maternal grandfather's family and grandmother's too. Warrior and Mt. Olive and Blount County among other places are full of them. Permelia was my great great grandmother her sister Sarah Ann Frances was my gX3 aunt and my great great aunt by marriage.

Fortner Family

Sarah Jane Fortner was my ggggrandmother, Tol Fortner my gggrandfather - I have researched her family for over 30 years and have found nothing to indicate her maiden name was Swain other than the fact she named a son Swain. I have saw her on Census records from 1820 to 1880 and she was always listed as head of household. If you have some kind of documentation I sure would love to see it. I do know she had illigitimate children because it is listed in the Emanual Co. Ga. records. She also saw to it they all (girls also) had an education. I have heard so many different stories about her I don't know what to believe. That she was a mistress of Senator Stephen Swain was one of them. She must have been quite a women for her day.

My husbands mother is Janet Lee Fortner (Kevin has his Moms maiden name) Her mother is Joyce Irwin(maiden name), she is still living and is TX. Janet also has a sister named Barbara that was Ralphs as well. From what I understand when he died is when the girls realized they had other siblings but they were young and well, we are curious about my husbans family.

He was from there, migrated to TN in 1900; he is our Great Grandfather, but we have spent countless DAYS looking at census and microfilm in Avery County (he was from Snowshoe Twnship)Avery County (Booneford originally). Born @ 1871 - 1874. Thanks for any information you might have!

According to my mother-in-law, Swanie Molleen Fortner Smith (a decendant of James Toll Fortner and actually Swain Montgomery Fortner from the other side of her lineage) his mother was Sarah Jane Fortner (5/17/1800-2/10/1883) - she had four illegit. children with Senator Stephen Swain of Emanuel County, Ga. I don't know why they never married. The dates I have for the three sons are Mitchel Griffin Fortner (b. 2/4/1819-d. 7/8/1887), Swain Montgomery Fortner (b. 12/22 or 29 1820-d. 3/13/1881)) and James Toll Fortner (b. 12/12/1822 - d. 6/5/1891)
