James Foster

I am trying to trace ancestors of james Foster who died in Helena, Arkansas on July 24th 1868. He went to USA in 1851, arriving from Liverpool to New York in 1851. He fought for the Confederates during the Civil War,so must have settled in Helena after the war. All the info I have is that he supposedly had a son called Willburtis but have no dates or marriage records. His parents were John and Elizabeth (nee Gamble) Foster and were from Uppingham England. Can anyone help. Please E Mail me. Thankyou.

I believe that William may have died before 1787, and Susannah may have died circa 1794.

I'm especially interested if anyone has information on any of their land holdings, particularly a 325 acre tract in the southern portion of the county that may have been acquired from Duncan Graham.

Scott

Joseph Foster and family - Oakland, CA

I am looking for any information on my g.g. grandfather Joseph Foster and his family who were living in Oakland, California in the early to mid 1900's. They also lived in Merced County for a while as well (1920's). Joseph was born in approximately 1864 in the Azores and died in 1947 in Merced or Madera County. They were married sometime around 1888. His wife was Lucy (Lucille) Netto (maiden name). SHe was born in approximately 1868 in the Azores and died in 1940 in Alameda County. They had 8 children, one of their children being Minnie Foster, later Minnie Frates (Minnie Daniels from second marriage). Both Joseph and Lucy are from the Azores, but I do not know which Island or town. Joseph Immigrated sometime in the 1880's, and Lucy probably around the same time or a little later. Foster was probably changed from Fostino, but I am not sure. If anyone has any information of Joseph Foster and Lucy Netto it would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to find a connection somewhere but have had not luck so far.
Thanks,
David Frates Buckley

John Milton married Margaret Phillips and had Clyde Chester Foster. This family ended up in the Mishawaka/South Bend Indiana area. I would love to chat with people interested in the same families. I have contact with the maternal side od the Clyde Foster/ Ruth Lovell side of the family but not the paternal Clyde and John Milton side.
Milton Foster

I am researching my grandfather's family and have hit a wall. He died when my father was too young to remember any information. My grandfather was Orie Foster 1891-1943 in Rowan County, KY. His father was Milton Foster. Milton married 3 times: Emily Jones (1), Sarah Carpenter (2), and Amanda McKenzie (3). I believe there were 10 children from first marriage. My grandfather was the only son of the second marriage. Marriage with Amanda resulted in another daughter but Milton died while this child was an infant. Orie was raised by a half-sister and her husband (Ambrose & Mary Crager) and is listed in 1900 census (Rowan County, KY). We have heard that Milton ran mule teams cross country in the mid to late 1800s. However, I am having difficulty finding any information about Milton or any ancestors. My e-mail is bfoster.ednursetraveller@gmail.com. Rowan Co., marriage Book 1, p. 58 records the marriage of Milton Foster and Sarah J. Carpenter on 18 Aug 1884. The marriage is also recorded in register A, p. 54.

FOSTER Photo, Oklahoma and Arkansas Connections

I recently obtained a photo of a young girl, who is identified as "Friend, Maycel FOSTER.

The woman who had them all of these years, was born and grew up in Oklahoma. (Except it appears that in the 1910 census the she lived in Wittich Township in Franklin County, Arkansas & was 8 years old at the time the census was taken.) I did some research on the FOSTER girl and wasn't able to locate a Maycel. Since I didn't know her parents names, this is all I can offer for information. According to the daughter of the woman who had these, her mother lived in Watonga, Blaine Co. OK, Eagle City, OK and Oklahoma City. Maycel could have been in any of these locations. I checked Arkansas and couldn't find her there either.

I'd like to locate family to send this to. For details, please contact me at: digginroots@hotmail.com

Kathy

She md a CLARK. I wish I had more info
but its all I have and I've looked a long time]
**Believe the 2nd dau to be a daughter md a Clarke of Williamson Co Georgetown, Tx.**

Mary Jane came to Texas at the age of 26 in 1853 to be with her father, Archibald.
In a letter she wrote 2-27-1910 to her Uncle John Bate Smeathers Sr, her father's brother, she says she found
her dad in Burleson County, Caldwell, Tx at her Uncle John Berry's and he had come up from Colorado Co Columbus, Tx where he had been living on land he owned.
She states he had a League of Land in Austin Co. She says she is 84 old when writing this letter and she even
says she is old. She speaks of her grandfather William Smeathers coming to the Austin Colony 15 years before
she was born. She mentions her father came but when she was 5 years old which would be abt 1831.
She says her mother Goodman died when she was 13 months old and Goodmans of Indiana raised her.
All she knows is from her father and Uncle John Berry who married a daughter of her grandfather, assuming
she refers to Betsy Smeathers.
She mentions that her grandfather had land near Colorado Co Columbus, Tx. and it was left to Jack and Batie Berry, which most likely is John Berry's son Andrew Jackson Berry and bro John Bate Berry.
In Mary Jane's grandfather, William Smeathers will, he does leave this land to Andrew Jackson and John Bate
Berry & their father, John Berry.
But why is she living so far from her family we cant figure out, except her husband Alexander Foster had died
and left her a widow. She speaks she does not walk well and this might have instigated her son Joe to have her
live with him in Lockney where he was working at a publishing company, then they must have moved to
Swisher as she died 1913 in Swisher Co, as I found her death certificate but not where she got buried.
Her father Archibald Smeathers died March 1864 Burleson Co Caldwell, Tx.
Prob Alexander died by 1895 or she would not have said in her 1910 letter she had lived with her
son Joe Foster for 15yrs.

1850 Illinois, Minard co., Pg 280 Family #197
A H Foster 34 Ky
M J 25 Ia IN
W L 6 Ill William
S H 4 Ill Stephen
I E Ill (Male) prob died young Joseph not born yet b 1854
I've come to the conclusion this enumerator must have used IA for Indiana.

1860 Texas, Burleson Co., Pg 138-A Family # 410.....
A H Foster 42 Ky
M J Foster 34 Ind.
William 15 Ind.
Stephen 14 Ill
Joseph 4 Tex.
Bennette 2 Tex.

1870 Burleson Co Tx census
Foster, Alexander H 54 Preacher Ky
Mary J 45 Khouse Ind
Joseph H 15 at sch Tx
Brunett A 'Nettie' J 12 " "
Mary E 8 " "
Naomi 'Nannie' 6 " "
Alexander 4 " "
Robert J 2 " "
>Wm age 25y & Stephen 24y missing
Joseph H Foster sr would been b 1855, couple yrs after they got to Tx.
James FOSTER/Martha DUPUY - VA/TN

I am looking for information on James FOSTER. He was born around 1746 in Amelia Co., VA. I believe his parents were George FOSTER and Mary FORREST. He married Martha DUPUY around 1766 probably in Goochland CO., VA. About 1779/80,
the family migrated to Tennessee through the Watagua settlement then on to Davidson Co., TN. The first three children of James and Martha are named in their grandfather DUPUY's will. I am trying to find a complete listing of their children and to prove that Elizabeth FOSTER who married Eleazar HARDEMAN on 20 Aug 1800 in Davidson Co., TN is also their daughter. She named a daughter and son for James and Martha. I would appreciate any information that you have on these families. Thank you.

If any body knows where I can get some info on this would help prove if he is the one in the Brewster Ma. cemetery. His tombstone says he died in 1815 so I do not know if this is him or not.
Sarah Guttridge Foster, b.1804 to Samuel & Anna Foster, Tewksbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts

Looking for my gr,gr grandmother Sarah G.(don't know maiden name)who was born in MA, married there to a Purington, had my great grandfather in Lowell, MA 6 Feb 1835. Her husband died when my great grandfather was a boy. They then went to N.H. and later to Minnesota. I think Sarah Guttridge Foster could be her. There is a Sarah G. Foster that married a John L. Purington in 1832 in Lowell and there aren't very many Purington's in Lowell or MA. I would be excited to have a whole new line to look into and I've been stuck on this for awhile! It's all complicated by the fact that there are a lot of Sarah Fosters, even two Sarahs with parents Samuel and Anna Foster. Any help on this would be immensely appreciated!
Sue P.

Any info on Fosters in pontefract area, esp Gerard Patrick, Son of Harold, a shoemaker

Ah, the Fosters. So incommunicative. My dad, Gerald Patrick, left home at 21 with a vow never to return, knowing little or nothing about his ancestry. His Father, also Gerald Patrick, was born around february 22nd 1915, served in the Yorks and Lacaster regiment during world war 2 and according to my dad, GP senior won the George medal for bravery for pulling a comrade out of the line of fire. (Some sort of violent abuse was the reason for the leaving home, I have surmised that my grandfather was an alocoholic, presumably as a result of WW2 service) He died 21st September 1973 in Tynemouth but as best as my father can tell, was born somewhere in yorkshire. According to his marriage certificate, which i've managed to trace, Gerald's father was one Harold Foster, a master Shoemaker and possibly son of a shoemaker. (Gerald married Maud Robertson, born 1919, at The Barracks, Pontefract, when both were stationed there).

What i am looking for is any information anyone might have regarding any relations to these men. I don't know names of Gerald senior's brothers and sisters, although my dad recalls an 'auntie who was a witch' (I think this was meant literally) and possibly uncles and other aunties named James, John, Frank and Isabelle (or 'Bella'. The family was a very typical 'no emotions to be shown' sort of thing, where no-one talked about feelings or problems, or anything much at all beyond immediate and practical matters.
It is also possible that Gerald senior was called Gerard, as I seem to have Gerard on his death certificate and Gerald on the marriage certificate, which my father dismisses as 'those idiots at whitley bay' messing up the spelling.
The strange thing is although I have a death certificate and a marriage certificate, and I know he was Lance Corporal 4745086 in the yorks and Lancaster regiment in 1939, and was a security guard at the Whitley Bay shipyard when he died in 1973, I cannot find a corresponding birth record anywhere near his apparent birth date of feb 22nd 1915, that matches his name correctly. I don't know his mother's maiden name, and can't get details for Harold by looking for the marriage certificate. Gerald senior had children called Maureen, Gerald (my Dad), Michael and Barry
I've been unable to find a match in teh census records etc on ancestry.co.uk
If anyone thinks they know of a Harold Foster, master shoemaker, presumably in the Pontefract area or thereabouts, who would have been married at some point between 1900 and 1915, and had at least one son called Gerald or Gerard, (and was possibly the son of a John Foster and Julia Dovenor, although this may be wrong) could they please let me know?

thanks muchly

Andy Foster

James W. and Louisa Elliott Foster from Guthrie Co Iowa

I am looking for any descendants of the above mentioned couple. I have reason to believe that Louisa was an aunt of my greatgrandmother Louisa Elliott Stuart. My greatgrandmother Louisa and her siblings somehow ended up in Guthrie Co IA, from Cole Co MO. I am trying to learn why they ended up in that place. Louisa Stuart's sister and husband, John and Margaret Wasson are buried in the same cemetery as James and Louisa Foster.

Foster, Lee --May be short form of a longer name?

We are searching for information about Lee J Foster b about 1800, probably in South Carolina. We have land grant info in Arkansas in 1833 and 1839. Later he is in Lamar County, Texas, where Foster descendants of his still live on the land grant he received in the 1840s. If he had a prior marriage before marrying Anna Clark in Crawford County, Arkansas, we do not have that information. He also married Martha Hogan in Texas. Martha might have had a previous marriage. Some of his children were Wilson, Rebecca, and Martha Jane, b 1834 in Crawford County, Arkansas.

Thanks for any crumbs of info someone might provide.
Pat
in Okla

I have a Abner R. Foster married Nancy Jane/Jan Dollar. Abner is the son of Anthony. Abner , Nancy, and son are listed in the 1880 Lamar census next to James and Amanda Foster family. By 1900 Abner has died and his widow and family are in the Collins, Fayette, AL. census. In the same census Blufford Foster family and Francis Dollar/Dallar are listed. On Nancys death cert. their son Will listed husband; Abner R. Foster, father; ( looks like) Ausburn Dollar born AL, mothers maiden name; Martha Dollar born AL..... I believe Nancy is the daughter of James Ausburn Dollar and Martha Francis Dollar who were married in Tuscaloosa, AL......
