Thanks for emailing me. My Father was Patrick William Fougler. His father was George William Foulger, he married a marion, but I am not quite sure of her maden name. I was named aftere her.

Most of the Foulgers from Shotesham and around are buried in Long Stratton.

Somehow there are many connected first names which must indicate a connection somewhere.,

Thanks for that information Brian. I didn't know that my great-grandfather had any other siblings. My father knew little about his relations in Yarmouth although he did meet a 2nd cousin, also called Horace Foulger in the early 1970's.

What were the names of the 2 sisters of Horace William Foulger? Have you been able to find out when his father (William Foulger) died. Horace came to Aberdeen around 1897 to work as manager of the local branch of Yarmouth Stores. Thereafter he ran several local businesses, including a ship chandler. He also owned a small fleet of fishing boats running out of Aberdeen and Stonehaven.

My understanding is that it is from the Norman French de fougere. Snippets I have heard are that the Foulger Family (apart from some Norman supporters at Battle of Hastings, for which some lands were granted in Lincolnshire), the family came from Flanders in the 14th century when there was a wool glut and a shortage of weavers. It is said that the Foulger family invented Tartan before the Scots got hold of it. My brother made some enquiries some years ago when he was at school and apparently de fougere translates to "of the people" and was originally "Lord of the People" Would be nice if that was true as the Foulgers are a pretty unique family. Hope this helps
