Re: Too many Joseph Fooshees of Chatham Co. NC 1813-1820

Todd,
Thanks! I did not try to follow Elijah Fooshee forward in time so I don't have anything about him once he left Chatham County, North Carolina.

I think my Joseph Fooshee was more of an age to be Simon Fooshee's brother rather than a son. I do have to say that I kind of gave up on the Fooshees for the moment and have not gotten them sorted out. But I was trying to "finish up" that branch of the family to show to my Mom.

Simon Fooshee's will text at http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/chatham/wills/fooshe01.txt) only mentions one son Elijah and wife Bridget.

In my genealogy program I've assigned Simon's parents (without any listed documentation) to be Charles Fooshee (b.1700 VA - d.Dec 1757 NC) and Christina Pulliem. Their children are listed as Joseph (b.1719), Charles (b.1723), William (b. 1727), Simon (b.1730), and Hannah (b.1745).

Charles is listed as being the son of John Foushee and Elizabeth Spoe. I do have documentation on their marriage from "Married Well and Often: Marriages of the North Neck of Virginia 1649-1800" and the will of Charles Spe in "Richmond County Virginia Wills 1699-1800" both by Robert K. Headley Jr.

John Foushee is listed as being the son of Jean Foushee (b.c1790 France - d.1733 will registered and probated in Richmond VA) and Meelin ?.

But that is where I bogged down - both John Foushee and Charles Foushee are listed as parents of a Joseph Foushee born in 1719 in Virginia. Since Virginia has more records than North Carolina of this era, there could be more documentation to be found, but I had leave this branch for now.

If Simon and Joseph are brothers and sons of Charles Foushee b.1700, then Joseph could have been the one in the 1818 obituary. But I have not found a listing for a daughter Mary for Charles and she would have been much younger. Mary was b.circa 1755, married in 1775, had children through about 1790 and died about 1834 - her will was probated in Aug 1834.

Of course, Charles Foushee as a name has been passed along a number of time - there are still Charles Foushees in NC today. Simon, Mary, and Joseph could have children of a later Charles that we do not have records on. Or I could be completely wrong in this connection.

I'm doing a "first pass" through all the genealogy info passed to me from my mother, grandmother and sister. Once I finish that I will come back to the loose ends and tug on them some more. My Joseph is definitely the Joseph who married Eleanor Stafford and the brother of Mary Fooshee who married Abraham Cook

If you find any more information on Elijah or Simon or documentation for the link to Charles, let me know. I may have documentation of that linkage here, but got lazy and did not enter it, but generally if I don't put the documentation into the program, it is a speculative link and I don't have records.

Thanks!
Anne

I have no original documents except a bible in which is written that my ancestor Ira Fooshee (b. 1803) was the son of Elijah and Mary Fooshee. Deducing from numerous original sources, I believe that (1) Ira was the son of Elijah Fooshee who died in Tennessee after applying for a Revolutionary War pension there; (2) Elijah was a son of Simon Fooshee of Chatham county; (3) said Elijah was a brother of the Joseph who married Eleanor Stafford (Ira Fooshee's first son was named Joseph and his first daughter was named Ellen and called "Nellie."); (4) Almond and Ira Fooshee were brothers. I believe you are correct in not connecting these men as sons of John Foushee of Chatham. I suspect the 1818 obituary notice for Joseph has a typographical error concerning his age. Now...to prove one shred of this! Todd Dorsett, Waynesboro, Pa.

Too many Joseph Fooshees of Chatham Co. NC 1813-1820

The will of Joseph Fooshee, written 6 May 1818 and proved August 1818 in Chatham Co., NC, lists Elijah Fooshee as the brother of Joseph, his sister Mary Cook, and Almon Fooshee as the son of Elijah. Also listed are his wife's sister Sarah Cook, Alston (or maybe Almon?), Anna Stone, Joseph Stone, brother in law Thomas Stone, and Benjamin Curl who was married to Susannah Cook, Mary's daughter. I have a copy of the will which I have transcribed and the details are slightly different that the abstract that has been available on the internet.
From other information I think that this Joseph is the one who married Nelly Stafford, daughter of Laban Stafford of Caswell Co. NC. Laban's daughter Sally married Ransom Cook, the son of Abraham Cook's brother Henry. Ransom's brother Johnston Cook married Sally and Nelly's sister Delilah.
I am descended from Mary (Fooshee) Cook and her husband, Abraham Cook. So far I have not been able to track who the parents of Joseph, Elijah and Mary are. Some people claim they are John Fooshee and Apphia Thornton of Culpeper Co., VA. John's will does list a Joseph and a Elijah (among other children) but no Mary, though his will does refer to “the Orphans such as are in Manage together with their several parts be and remain under the care & Discretion of my wife Abphia Foshee & such their parts be given out at Age or Marriage.” This does not help clear up anything.

There were at least three Joseph Fooshees in Chatham County who died about the same time - the NC Archives show wills proved in 1813, 1818, and 1820. The 1818 one is the one I listed above. Joseph Fooshee who was married to Happy Stewart was the writer of the 1820 will. Some people consider him to be the son of John Fooshee of Culpeper Co. VA. So far I have not found a copy of the 1813 Joseph Fooshee will.

And just to complicate things, I found a reference to a newspaper obituary from 1818: D[ied]. In Chatham [county], a few days since, Mr. JOSEPH FOOSHEE, sen., aged 97 years. ... RaNCSw Fri 4 Sept 1818 3:3. (Abstracts of Vital Records from Raleigh, North Carolina, Newspapers: 1799-1819
Lois S. Neal; Reprint Co., 1979, Spartenburg, SC). Could this be the Joseph Fooshee with the 1818 will, brother of Mary and Elijah? If he died in August, the September obituary could have been the most recent available notice in the paper. But Mary and Elijah were decidedly at least a generation younger than this Joseph Fooshee.

If anyone has original sources - deeds, wills, court records, etc - that might help sort out the Joseph Fooshees of Chatham County, North Carolina, I would love to see that information. I have been working from original sources to try to prove definite links but have not been able to get a handle on my Joseph, Mary and Elijah's parents.

Anne

Hi, Terry. Thanks again for the grest info.

Second cousin once removed simply means that there is a one-generation difference between us with respect to our common ancestor. If Vollmore were my great-grandfather as well as yours, we'd be second cousins. But because he is my great-GREAT-grandfather, that makes us one generation removed.

Type "second cousin once removed" into Google and you'll come up with Wikipedia and Genealogy websites that have excellent explanations about this stuff.

Now I'm off to update my Foushee info, thanks to you. :-)

Moira

Moira,

I am 56 years old born and raised in Louisiana. I am married with two children, Jason and Heather.

On culpepper.net/foshee, I hound that Vollmore's children
are John Norman,James Clinton, Bill Wren "Will", Esperanza, Sarah, and Louise Valmore "Vallie".

On bangsunds.com/Foushee I found Colonial Ties, descendants of Elijah Foushee.

With other documentaion I found Elijah's father was John H 1725-1779 m.1750 to Aphia Thorton. His brother was Dr. William Foushee 10-26-1749 to 8-12-1884 m. Elizabeth Harmanson, he was the first mayor of Richmond, Virginia. He
was a well known doctor duing the Revoltionary War. He also was on the board of the James River Bateau Company.

Their father was John 7-6-1697 in VA d before 11-1760 married to Winifred Williams 1710-1765. His father was James b.1165 in France d.9-5-1729 Lancaster, VQ m. Mary. His brother wqs John 1667 France d.1733 Culpepper, VA.
They came over from France together. John became a citizen.

Only thing before that is Foushee 1640 born in France.

I show that Vollmore died in the Civil War at the Battle of Chancellorsville. William D. died in the Mexican War.

In your e-mail you said we were cousins once removed.
Hi, Terry. Wow, that's great additional info re the Foushee family for my file.

Yes, I do believe we are second cousins once removed. Your great-grandfather Volmer DeRossenberg Foushee is my great-great-grandfather. It looks like your grandmother Esperanza was a sister to my great-grandfather John Norman, b. 1852 in North Carolina, m. 1877 to Alice/Adelaid Transou/Transeau (as you can see, I'm still trying to nail down that info). My grandmother Minnie was b. 1884 in NC and emigrated to Canada in 1910.

Can you tell me a little more about Esperanza? Do you know of other siblings (I know there was a James Clinton, b. 1856)? I can give you a few more details, but as I got them from ancestry.com, you probably also have them.

Anyhoo, Terry, I'm 67yo, married with one son, and living in the countryside just east of Toronto, Ontario.

I am seeking information on my paternal grandmother, Minnie Foushee.

The NC Birth Index for 1800-2000 shows Minnie Foushee, b. 1884 in Wilkes, NC, father John Norman Foushee. The 1916 Canada Census shows Norman Foushee b. 1853 in the USA, immigrated 1915. He is identified as "father-in-law" to the head of the household, Lewis Adna Blackstock, who was m. to Minnie Foushee who immigrated from the USA in 1910.

The 1880 US Census shows Norman Foushee b. approx. 1852 in NC, and living in Fishing Creek, Wilkes, NC, m. to Adelaid (sp?) Transeau.

I believe that Norman Foushee's antecedents are as follows: 1. William D. Foushee (1807-1836), m. 1825
m. Nancy Taylor Lambert
2. Vollmore DeRossenberg Foushee (1828-1863)
m. Louise Wren (1820-....)
3. John Norman Foushee, b. 1852, m. 1877

(I previewed this message and I don't think it will show the antecedents in a tree form, so I hope you can follow this.)

Can anyone provide me with any further information, esp. confirmation of this information. The information posted on CCHA was information I had gathered on our Foushee clan and Rick Frederick, another cousin, and now moderator for the CCHA site and others uploaded most of the information for me a few years back.

Yes, this is the family . . . however, in all my research I've never found anyone who knew what the "G" stood for in this particular John G Foushee. I've even tried contacting the western Foushee's to no avail. How do you know that it is "Giles?"

Not exactly. John G. Foushee was born to Adnah Campbell Foushee in Person Co, NC. He married Elizabeth West Arnall Robertson. She having been married before. She was born in Missouri and died in Colorado in 1925. John G. Foushee, however, is not John Giles Foushee. John G. Foushee was born 24 Jan 1833 in Person Co and died 30 Oct 1893 in Stillwater, OK. I'm not sure who Asa Arnall Foushee might be. Would be interested in comparing notes.
I have been led to believe I'm related to Dr William Foushee (1st mayor of Richmond) I have traced his ancestors from son Dr William to that one's son Dr William but everything seems to end there. Skip a generation--- I have no record/information of My grandfather Arthur Sommervile Foushee born in 1836 except a book given to him in Phoenix AZ in 1893 by a Mayor Foushee of Lexington. Said book was presented to Mayor Foushee by a M Carter in 1891. Another notation in the book is of a N(?) B Carter Louisville, KY in 1872. I do know that one of Dr William Foushee's(first one) daughters married a Carter...so maybe a connection. Any information to fill in the gaps?

I am seeking information on Nannie Foushee, born around 1856. She married Andrew Jackson and had a daughter Carrie Lee born in 1889 in Richmond, VA. She could have been from NC or VA (or anywhere east/south). She had another daughter, Lillia and perhaps 2 sons. Since I have been unable to find any information I feel that she was not from VA. I have no idea of the parents names.
Any information would be appreciated.

Andrew Jackson FOUSHEE

Does anyone have information on Andrew Jackson Fourshee, son of Gabriel Foushee and Elizabeth Brantley? Information on him seems to have him living from 1826-1920 when he died in Union County, Mississippi. However I question the accuracy of these dates by reason of the 1900 Union County, MS census and also the 1910 and 1920 census.

In the 1900 census he is enumerated with a DOB of Oct 1817 and 82 yrs of age. In addition I do not find him in Union County, MS in either the 1910 or 1920 census. I think it possible that his DOB is actually 1817, as stated in the 1900 census and that he died between 1900 and 1910. I have not checked with Union County to see if there is any death record for him but if anyone has any definitive information on this matter I would appreciate receiving the information.

Andrew's wife, Polly, is also still living at the 1900 census. Her DOB at that census year is May 1822, which would have made her 78 yrs of age at that census.

I am a Dowdy family historian and this Foushee line is descended from Sarah Dowdy, the sister of my 3X great-grandfather, Allen Dowdy.

I'd appreciate input with anyone with information in response to my question.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur
Beaverton, Oregon

Ira Foushee of Davidson county was my great-great-grandfather. His daughter Ancelet, who married John T. Pearce, was my great-grandmother.
Was your grandmother Lizzie Auman?
Also, I take with a grain of salt the assertion that Ira was a son of Almond Foushee; for I have never seen documentation offered in support of it, and furthermore I have an old family Bible which lists Ira as a son of Elijah Fooshee and his wife Mary. Unfortunately, no one can place this couple Elijah and Mary.
Ira migrated from Chatham county in the 1840s to Silver Hill, where he and many members of the family were buried on his farm. I am stumped as to his wife's maiden name: the only clue I have ever had was when one elderly cousin, now deceased, thought she had heard she (Mrs. Ira Foushee) was born a Hamlet, which is indeed an old Chatham county surname.

My great grandparents were African American Paynes who live in the Locustdale District of Madison Co, Va. in 1870. I would like to know if any of your Payne family or connected families might have owned slaves and if so whether there are any records that may list names of slaves. As you know, it really gets hard for African Americans to trace their history past the 1870 "brick wall". Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you can help.
Looking for anyone who can help me, I have hit a wall in my research on this line. My GGrandmother was Opal Fooshee B in Canada, her father was Walter Fooshee born in Missouri. Walter's father was John Wyatt Fooshee born in Missouri about 1832 and died in Iowa in 1867. John Wyatt's father was John Augustus Foushee Born about 1800 in North Carolina, Possibly Person County. He was married to a Malinda Cooper and Possibly the brother of an Absalom Foushee. He was married in Roane County Tenn. Other Children include Absolom and Catherine I believe. I have no information as to who his parents are and would really like to trace this line back further. The little information I have found on this and other websites is usually unsourced and confusing. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You. Kristie

SARAH J. HITT. He was listed with his parents in the 1880 Census for Culpeper, VA ED #36, pg 20. There are many Brown and Foushee families listed together on that page with some Foushee's listed in the Brown households as "cousins". Can you help me?

I obtained my information from Shanan Anderson's website "The Secret Garden of Mariahswind". I did not know of the Royce Culpepper site. Do you have the web address? To the best of my knowledge, I am a descendant of John Foushee, Jr. and Alphia Thornton, through their daughter Hannah Foushee who married Thomas Brown. I think all researchers strive for accurate research, to do any less might cause a loss to another researcher. I would like to get a little more history on this family. Names are nice, but they don't tell the whole story. Is there a Foushee family historian?

Thank you, Roger, for all the helpful suggestions. My sister and I are planning a trip down to Culpeper this summer. I believe I can get better answers there than what I find on the internet. If you ever write a book with your research in it, please let me know. E-mail: boytwingles@aol.com Best regards, Lillie

It's been two years. Did you find what you were looking for?
In my collection of Foushee info this is your lineage:
Ira Foushee b. 1810 was the son of
Almond Foushee (d1823 in Chatham County) and Elizabeth.
Almond was the son of:
Elijah T. Foushee (1763-1838 d.Chatham County) and Anna Stewart
Elijah was the son of:
John Foushee(1721-1779 d. Culpepper County, Virginia) and Apphia
John was the son of:
Jean Fouche 1697- d. Richmond County, Virginia) and Mee'lin

Jean came from France.

I can note my sources- many are very secondary. This is not my direct line.
