Than k you for keeping me posted on new information as you have researched it re: George Brinton Fraley. I missed the designated race as "black" for the individual in the 1910 Philadelphia Census - I appreciate your correction.

I am not currently working on this line, but his direct descendant "Underwood" should be contacted and kept in the loop for this ancestor.

Thank You.
I'm researching the Epps/Eppes family of Grainger and Knox Counties, TN. I ran across information on a family tree showing John Eppes marrying Susannah Womack (born c 1763, VA). One of their children, William Epps married Frances Easley. They had a son Richard M. Epps who married Armenia E. Carter in Knox County, TN. Do you have any information on this Womack line (believed to be in early Grainger County, TN)? Thanks for your great post--lots of good information. Karen Walker Bauer

I think I may have found his father in the 1940 Census. His fathers name was Thomas Fraley and had 2 brothers in 1940: Thomas Jr. and Arthur. Raymond was 18 at the time so his birthday would have been around 1921-1922. They lived in Circleville, Pickaway, Ohio. He was born in Kentucky. Any information would be helpful. I've done a search and found 2 Raymonds. One born 9-28-21 died 7-10-66. The other is 5-6-22 died 3-31-76.

Thanks.

It looks like a few of us are researching the same George B. Fraley. I recently got his birth record from the NJ archive. He was born in Trenton, NJ 8 Sept 1864. His parents were Andrew Fraley & Alice Rappalyea. I also sent away for their marriage record, but the microfilm is poor so I wasn't able to get their parents names. They were married 27 Jan 1862 in Bordentown, NJ by Rev. Scoville (Presbyterian). I haven't yet pursued this further.

The only piece of information I disagree with is the 1910 Philadelphia census -- that George is listed as black and an inmate, so that doesn't fit.

These are my notes on George Brinton Fraley. I hope they are helpful to you. You may contact me directly at
montysar@sbcglobal.net

BIOGRAPHY: George Brinton Fraley came to San Francisco in the 1880s to study the electric trolley cars. In 1889 he lived at 909 Taylor Street S.F. and was an electrician with the Electric Improvement Co. He married Angela Del Conti about 1888 and together they had three sons, George Brinton, Jr., Ferdinand Miguel and James Gordon. In 1890 George Sr. lived at the rear of 1416 Bush Street, S.F. During their marriage Angela ran a boarding house on Sutter Street. In the 1900 Federal Census the family was living in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but by 1909 George and Angela were divorced. Angela and her two younger sons returned to California; George Sr. and George Jr. remained on the East coast, both living in Sullivan County New York in later years.

It is believed that George Fraley was the GEORGE B. FRALEY, age 46 on 1910 Census in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with birthplace listed as New Jersey. The Head of Household at his address was Charles H. Packard (State - PA, E.D. 0611, pg. 0009).

Angela, Ferdinand and James were living in Monterey in 1916, on Del Monte Blvd, later on 4th Street near Sloat. George, Sr. is listed in the 1920 Federal Census, Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY as a boarder, divorced, living with Mrs. Pollen and her two children. His occupation was electrical engineer. In 1930 he was again living in Liberty, NY, but rented his own home, and is shown as a widower, age 64, electricl engineer.

I am descended from Frederick Fraley, b. 1741 in VA, and his wife, Elizabeth Bull, born abt. 1750 in MD. He is my 4th great grandfather. Do not confuse this Frederick Fraley with another Frederick, married to Chloe, of about the same time frame. Are you descended from my Frederick?

Re: New Info on Frederick Fraley?

Hello,

My name is Beth Walton, I descend from Maj. Jacob Womack and Sarah Johnson's son David Womack, through David's son, Larkin Womack, born 5 Oct 1785 Burke Co., NC or Pendleton District, SC.

The administrator of Womack DNA testing, Robert E. Burke, Jr. called it to the attention of our Womack researchers in 2008 that the son of Maj. Jacob Womack and Sarah Johnson, Jesse Womack was possibly the husband of Chloe and Frederick Fraley's daughter, Chloe Fraley. Actually this Jesse Womack was the only one in that time frame and area who could have been Chloe Fraley's husband. He's also the only known Jesse Womack with an unknown wife.

Jacob Womack's son, Jesse Womack is not to be confused with Jacob's brother, Jesse Womack.

Jesse Womack's descending lineage
William Womack, the Immigrant
Richard Womack, Sr. - Mary Puckett
Richard Womack, Jr. - Elizabeth (maybe Puckett - no proof)
Richard Womack, III - Ann "Nancy" Childers
Jacob Womack - Sarah Johnson
Jesse Womack - Chloe Fraley (possible wife)

Chloe Fraley was named as his daughter in Frederick Fraley's 8 Apr 1782 Will and also in the Bill of Complaint, FRALEY vs. FRALEY & SMITH as: "Jesse Wommack and Chloe his wife, formerly Chloe Friley" The latest date I saw in the Bill of Complaint I found on line is 1809.

In the Revolutionary War, (then) Capt. Jacob Womack's Womack's Fort Fincastle Co., VA 1776 milita payroll is on line.

Source: TNgenweb
Watauga Petition with Jacob Womack as a commissioner

"In 1772, the white settlements south of the Holston River, although acknowledged to be an unorganized part of North Carolina, were without any form of government. In 1772, they "exercised the divine right of governing themselves," forming a "written association and articles for the management of general affairs. Five Commissioners were appointed, by the decision of a majority of whom all matters in controversy were settled..." The Articles of the Watauga Association are apparently not extant, but it is known that they "in convention assembled, elected as Commissioners, thirteen citizens. They were John Carter, Charles Robertson, James Robertson, Zach. Isbell, John Sevier, James Smith, Jacob Brown, William Bean, John Jones, George Russell, Jacob Womack, Robert Lucs and William Tatham."

According to the TNgenweb Project, "....Womack's Fort was located in what is now Sullivan County, Tennessee, but was originally considered part of southwest Virginia. In 1776, however, Womack's Fort was part of Fincastle County, Virginia, and that same year, upon war having been declared against the English, became part of the newly-created Washington County, Virginia, both of which counties are named in the following muster roll of Jacob Womack's Militia Company....By 1778, however, upon erection of Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee), Jacob Womack was one of the justices of the new county court (Washington County Court Minutes, 23 Feb 1778"

On the web page, SOLDIERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION FROM SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, (then) Capt. Jacob Womack, his son, Pvt. Jesse Womack and Pvt. Frederick Fraley are listed as soldiers who accompanied Col. William Christian in the Revolutionary War Cherokee Expedition of Aug 1776. I have seen Capt. Joseph Martin's 1 May thru 30 Jun 1777 militia payroll with Frederick Fraley on it. Col. Evan Shelby's rank in 1776 was Major. Capt. Jacob Womack was promoted to 2nd Maj. by the Provincial Congress of NC at Halifax 23 Dec 1776. Capt. Joseph Martin and his company and Maj. Jacob Womack and his company fought in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Kings Mountain as part of the "Overmountain Men" of Washington Co., TN.

Chloe Fraley Womack was not named in her mother's 29 May 1823 Will. She might not have been mentioned because she had already received her share of her father's estate or she was deceased. She was also not named in the 1827 Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory of Missouri probate record of Jesse Womack. This is present day Randolph Co., AR.

Jacob Womack's Tennessee land record is dated 1782.

Washington County
Wammack, Jacob 1782, 262 acres, Northern Dist, Book 5, Page 318, Grant #2316

After leaving TN, the Womacks were in Burke Co., NC as early as 1782

1782 - Burke County, NC - Jacob Womack - paid 261 Spanish milled dollars (to bear interest at 6%) - for 378 lbs. of fresh pork.

In 1785 Jacob and his son, Johnson Womack were involved in a law suit against one of Sarah Johnson Womack's possible Johnson relatives, Robert Johnson who owed a debt to the state of North Carolina, and apparently Jacob Womack was one of his guarantors. It was thought that Robert Johnson had fled to Powell's Valley in KY. The law suit has that Jacob Womack sent his son, Johnson Womack to look for him. He did not find Robert Johnson and Jacob Womack paid part of Robert's debt.

Jacob was enumerated just south of Burke Co., NC on the 1790 Pendleton District, SC census. The Womacks were in Grainger Co., TN in 1797, living as squatters on Indian lands and didn't owe the federal government taxes. Jacob is not on the list because he was probably too old to pay poll taxes. Supposedly, the Hatfield family of Chloe and Frederick Fraley's son, Daniel Fraley's wife Mary "Polly" Hatfield were also listed as squatters. Source: TNgenweb - The Intruders.

The last record I have of Jacob Womack was in Grainger Co., TN.

WPA Transcriptions at TN State Archives:
Grainger Co., TN court records - 1796-1802 - several mentions of Jacob and David Womack. In one court record, Jacob is referred to as Major Jacob Womack. In another court record, Jacob and David listed together as part of a jury to lay off a road.

Maj. Jacob Womack's widow, Sarah "Sally" Johnson, her son David Womack and her grandson, Larkin Womack were living in Jackson Co., TN prior to 1815. That the last known record of her.

David his brothers, Jesse and Johnson Womack apparently moved from Grainger Co, TN to Jackson Co, TN, and thence to White Co, TN.

Womacks in Early Tennessee Tax Lists
Grainger Co, TN - 1799 - David Womack, Johnston Womack
Jackson Co, TN - 1802 - David Wamack, John Wamack
White Co, TN - 1811 - David Womack, Jesse Wammock, John Wammock

Womacks in Tennessee Land Grants
White County
Wormack, David 1814, 10a, G Dist, bk I, p 220, g#6414
Womack, David 1814, 10a, MTN Dist, bk 5, p 27, g#6414
Wormack, Larkin 1814, 13a, G Dist, bk I, p 219, g#6189
Warmack, Larkin 1814, 13a, G Dist, bk 5, p 32, g#6189

By 1816, the Womacks, with the exception of Larkin Womack, had moved to Lawrence Co, AR, which was then part of Missouri Territory.

1816 Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory Tax list
WOMACK, David
WOMACK, Jesse < < <
WOMACK, John
WOMACK, John A second listing of the same name)
WOMACK, Johnson

In attempting to learn the birth places of Jacob Womack and Sarah Johnson's children, I have these Virginia Records:

"The Womack Family" by Perkins, in GULF STATES MAGAZINE, LL
Lunenburg Co., Va. Order Book 5, Pg. 103

Jul Court 1758
Jacob Womack took oath to his Majesty's Person & Government as a Commanding Officer of one of the townships of Halifax Co., VA

Prince Edward Co., VA Court Order Book
1750-1764 Prince Edward Co. VA, Chancery Court
Farmville, VA
"In a court case beginning August 1758 in Prince Edward Co. VA, Margaret Womack widow and relict of Richard Womack sued Richard and Jacob Womack. In July 1760 she was awarded "the wench Tabb for her dower in the negroes" also "her third part of 200 acres in Lunenburgh county it being the plantation whereon her husband Richard Womack died" and an amount to be assessed for her dower in the improvements on 400 acres in Prince Edward belonging to Vallentine Cawley."

Margaret Cody Womack, the widow of Richard Womack, IV, sued Richard Womack III and his son, (Maj.) Jacob Womack in the above lawsuit.

In his RW pension application, Jesse Womack's brother, Johnson Womack said he was born 2 Jan 1762 Goochland Co., VA. From the research of the late Harold Johnson who wrote "The Johnson Report" I learned that Johnson Womack's maternal grandfather, Joseph Johnson's Will was recorded 1761 in Lunenburg Co., VA. Joseph was originally from Goochland Co., VA and was a land owner there.

So I've established that the daughter of Chloe and Frederick Frailey, Chloe Fraley most likely married prior to 1809 the son of Maj. Jacob Womack and Sarah Johnson. Chloe Fraley Womack was born prior to 8 Apr 1772 and probably died before 29 May 1823.

The only records I have of Jesse Womack are his RW service in 1776, the 1811 White Co., TN tax list, the 1816 Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory tax list and his 1827 Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory probate record.
I am trying to find my Uncle's birth father. My uncles name is Larry Fraley. His father is Raymond Fraley or there may be an Art in there somewhere. His mother's name is Jean, I'm not sure her maiden name but she married a man named Francis Knece. She goes by the Knece last name. They all live in Ohio. My uncle has been told his father is dead but his mother will not tell him anything at all. He is curious if he has any half brothers or sisters and any info on his father. Any help will welcomed.

Yes, I have done quite a bit of research in Virginia and West Virginia. Also, other "cousins" have followed up there and in Maryland. The birth place in Germany and year of Johann Daniel is still circumstantial. based on secondary sources. Bob Engel

John, I will write more later. Kevin has given you good information. We hosted your grandmother, Gertrude, in Iowa City for a couple of days many years ago. She was quite a lady. By the way, your notes should show that your great grandparents lived in Iowa before moving on to Oregon. He was raised in Albion,Iowa. He was a brother of my great grandfather. Your great grandmother was raised on a farm near Spencer, Iowa. Bob Engel

Hi John,

The best work on our early family is by Robert Engel of Iowa, your 3rd cousin. What I have from him combined with several other sources is what I believe at this time to be correct. I have that Frederick was one of at least 5 children of Johannes Daniel Frölich (b. abt. 1699 Rhine Palatinate [Germany], d. bef. Nov 1784 Amity Township, Berks County, PA) and his wife Dorothea (b. bef. 1724). The Virginia sources have been examined pretty closely, less so the earlier MD sources (home of the Bulls and place of their marriage) and PA sources. We have the Bull line back before 1500. Merry Christmas to you too.

Kevin:
I think we may have had some brief emails back and forth many years ago. We are in Pomona, CA. The rest of my immediate family is scattered around the world. I'd really like to solve the mystery of who Frederick Fraley's parents were. There is some thought that it MAY be Johann Froelich. Do you have any info on that? Has anyone ever researched sources in Virginia to try to get more info? If not, where would you recommend that start? I have a sister in Virginia. I have several nephews in the Seattle area, and I understand that many Fraleys are in the NW. It's good to hear from you. Merry Christmas.
John

Hi John,
You and I are 4th cousins, I have you in my database. I have visited the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland OR and seen several of your ancestors there. My descent from John Fraley (1783-1855) is from his son Daniel Asbury Fraley (1813-1887), his son Horace Greeley Fraley (1854-1928), his son Otto Greil Fraley (1891-1946), his son Raymond Edward Fraley (1921-1990) and then me. Incidentally I believe that Frederick actually died in 1825. I am located in Everett, WA and would love to hear from you. Swimref at hotmail.com
Kevin Fraley

This is a different Frederick (and John) than the one referenced in the posting to which you replied. The KY Fraleys are for the most part descended from the well known Frederick Fraley married to Chloe and from the Castlewood, Virginia area. Like the original poster, I am descended from the Frederick Fraley who died in Highland County, Ohio.

His son was Charles Washington Fraley, his son was Charles Washington Fraley, Jr., his son was my grandfather Earl Fraley, Sr., his son was my father Earl Fraley, Jr. The father of the first John Fraley was Frederick Fraley who died in Highland County, Ohio, in 1823. His wife was Elizabeth Bull. These Fraleys migrated from Virginia (John) to Ohio, Indiana, Oregon, and California, in that order, where I am now.

Aunt Hannah passed away before I turned 10 (born in 1970), children were mostly split among family with Doris Ann (my cousin coming to live with our family) Aunt Hannah is buried in Elmhurst, Pa Cemetary with my Grandparents and Uncle Henry remarried and died approx 10 or so years ago near Phila. My Uncle Raymond lived in VA near us, he passed away around 1980 and my mom, Doris, passed away in VA in 2001. Who might you be?

This could possibly be the Andrew I'm looking for but its too soon to know for sure.

I'm still looking for a death date for George Sr. Last I can trace him is living in Liberty, NY on the 1930 census.

My maiden name is Fraley, my father was Silas (Sy,Arky,Sam) Fraley, his parents were Fred (Ruben Fred) and Emma (Celia Emmaline), His grandfather was John Harrison Fraley, and I believe John's father was Allen. I remember seeing documents re Indian rights as a child with the names John Fraley and Mary Lucinda O'bar as man and wife. My Father's siblings were Herschel, Verline, Ruben, Rose, Lemuel, and there were twins Hartsel & Haskell who died as infants. Also the name Neosha is the name of a cousin, Aunt Verline's daughter, I hope we are related, I don't know much about my Fraley family except for old family stories. However I do have a picture of John and either his sister Mary or his wife Mary.
Becky Fraley Thompson (bt@easy.com)

The manager of our family tree says I have to have a profile for you and then I can invite you by way of email. You then go to the site and they will ask for login, can make a new one. All I need is name& email. You can then look at all the Fraley's we have collected. We're still adding them on.
We are careful, but I recognize the names you mentioned.
Carol

I know I signed up on geni.com however I must of forgot my log in information. I will keep trying. I would love to see pictures of Ruben and Louisa. I knew that Ruben had to of been adopted. I received a letter from someone regarding Rebecca Reed. The person thought Rebecca was his mother however I am not sure that is the case either. Have you come across Rebecca Reed or a Nathanial Dickerson? I would love to know who is parents are.

Ruben Fraley is my great grandfather. I am on geni.com with other family members. I have info there regarding Louise Winkle's family. I haven't found Ruben's parents either. I have been contacting his children for info. There is only one of James Fraley's sons living, Gennis Fraley, which would be Ivery's brother. He is very ill, but his wife Louise has shared some info. It seems Ruben was adopted and that's why it's at a stand still. If you are interested in joing geni.com, I can invite you. There are pictures of Ruben and Louisa.
Carol

Stephen Columbus Ketchie was my great-grandfather, and my information on the children of John Henry and Rose Ann (Fraley) Ketchie is directly from my grandparents as well as further research.

You are no doubt aware that Benjamin Rufus and Stephen Columbus were twins, though certainly not identical. Benjamin was born first and weighed 9 1/2 pounds at birth. He was often referred to as "Big Ben". Stephen, on the other hand, was reported to have been a mere 1 1/2 pounds at birth. The midwife put him in a quart cup and covered it with her hand. At least that is what was written in a newspaper article written about 1910!

If I learn anything else about Rose Ann's family, I'll let you know!

Rose Fraley is my 3rd great grandmother and I also have run into a dead end. All I know is that she was born between 1788 & 1829; married John Henry Ketchie (Ketchey) 12/14/1834; and died in child birth. I only show the twins Benjamins and Stephen as children.
Norman Ketchie
Walterboro, SC

Hi Lorrie,
I was wondering if you had any success in getting the documents from DAR yet? I'm trying to prove Sarah Fraley-Donohoe was Frederick's daughter, and the only piece of paper I need is a photocopy of Frederick's will which lists Sarah as his daughter. If you were able to get a copy of the will, please let me know and I would be happy to pay for a copy of it.
