There are similar stories about Ellis Island and they are universally untrue. They are myths meant to cover the intentional changing of names to help the bearer more easily fit in to North American society. The manifests were filled out in Europe and no one in North America needed to pronounce anything. There were no new documents generated. In any event, why would anyone have trouble pronouncing Frankel? And what if they did mispronounce it slightly? So what?

What you should be aware of is that all Eastern European Frankels are related, having been descended from the Frankels of Prague in the 17th Century, and that the rabbis of Eastern Europe were all Frankels or descendants of Frankels, though they later began to take up other professions.

My Grandfather Irvin Franklin, told me that when his family emigrated from Russia to Canada before ww1 the immigration people could not pronounce Frankel so they changed the name to Franklin. One of his sisters came over 1 year later and I believe immigrated to the US and settled in New Jersey.

Regards,
Michael Franklin
Toronto

FRANKEL Tillie Feinbloom 1920-2010

Tillie "Ty" Frankel, retired secretary and administrative assistant at the Toledo-Lucas County, Ohio Planning Commission, the Toledo Department of Community Development, and various other city and county agencies during a period of several decades (retiring in the 1980's), died on July 27, 2010, at the age of 89.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1920, she moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1949 when she married Leon Frankel, her loving and devoted husband, to whom she was married for nearly 50 years. Leon, retired chief child support referee for the Lucas County Domestic Relations Court, died in 1998, the day before his 88th birthday.

Tillie is survived by four children, Robert Paul Frankel, Amy Lynn Frankel, Joan Michele Frankel and Martin Richard Frankel. Her daughter, Amy has lived with her for the past 11-1/2 years,

Tillie graduated from high school in Detroit, specializing in secretarial skills, so that she could go to work at an early age (during the Depression), in order to help support her family. During high school she won many awards for her superior skills in typing, short-hand, and dictation.
These skills helped her throughout her career, both in Detroit, and working for city and county agencies in Toledo. On numerous occasions she was asked to take the official minutes of Toledo City Council, on special assignment, because of her short-hand skills, speed, and accuracy.

Throughout her life she was active in athletics. At a young age she rode horses. All through her years in Toledo (with Leon participating as well), she won honors, awards, and competitions in a wide range of athletic activities, including bowling, tennis, swimming, and track and field events (including the Triathalon). She and Leon won many medals in Senior Olympic competitions, not only in Toledo, but in regional Senior Olympic competitions in other Mid-Western states.

Tillie was involved in many communal and charitable organizations, both in the general and Jewish communities. She was a life-member of Na'amat, an organization working to help children in Israel. She was active in B'nai B'rith Women, Congregation B'nai Israel Sisterhood, Women's American ORT (a world-wide charity devoted to vocational education), and many other causes. She also volunteered to help organizations which touched her children's lives, such as the Girl and Boy Scouts, the Fulton School PTA, and the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization.

She was an extraordinarily friendly person, who tended to make new friends in many of the activities she participated in, at the places she worked, and wherever she traveled. Many people have fond memories of her exuberant and enthusiastic spirit.

Tillie was pre-deceased by her loving parents, Jacob and Anna Feinbloom; by her cherished brother and sister (and their spouses), Jules (Rose) Fayne and Emma (Oscar) Adelson, and by the recent passing of her dearly loved niece and nephew, Nancy and Alan Saturn. Tillie is survived by (in addition to her four children) a very large family, including many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews, and great great grand nieces and nephews.
Before her health declined, she took great joy in spending time with this large extended family.
Among those closest to her, and that she saw most frequently, are: Sheldon (Elaine) Adelson, Robert (Diane) Adelson, Lori (Matthew Breyer) Adelson, Michael (Susan) Fayne, Ron (Linda) Fayne, Wendy (David) Glaser, Sheldon and Ervine Frankel, Paul and Sharon Frankel, Arthur Sigman (Toby Sigman, recently deceased), Joseph (Vicky) Frankel, Barb (Mark) Frankel-Wexler (and their children, Bryan and Andrea), Jonathan (Niki) Frankel, Karen (Bruce) Kearns, Jerry (Sheri) Frankel, Matthew (Collin Glidewell ) Sigman, Shari (Chris) Miltiades, Steven (Carolyn) Sigman, and Claire (Sharon McNeil) Sigman.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 in the Robert H. Wick/Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 North Reynolds Rd. (419-535-5840).
Interment will follow at Beth Shalom Cemetery, Oregon, OH. An announcement will be made in regards to receiving of friends at the funeral service.

Memorial tributes suggested in the form of contributions to Na'amat (Child Rescue Fund), Congregation B'nai Israel, Congregation Etz Chayim, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Published in Toledo Blade from July 28 to July 29, 2010
My great grandfather's brother Joseph appears to have been the first to change the name. My great grandfather himself never made it to America, having died sometime before 1904. In case anyone's interested, the brothers were Joseph, Hersh, Isaac, and Moshe (Morris). Moshe was named after his father, so I think he was the youngest. There was also a sister, Miriam, who became Miriam Zavalkov (Salkin). They all show up early in Baltimore, but there were a couple of children born earlier in tidewater Virginia, the details of which escape me. They were all blacksmiths and lived near the Dnieper River in Ukraine.

You are quite correct. My grandfather Jacob Frankel arrived in Elis Island from somewhere neare Kiev under the name Jacob Frankel in the early 1900s. He was married in 1910 in NYC with the name Jacob Franklin. His parents were David Frankel and Shendel Rossman (maiden name). I have spent years trying to find a family tree connection but so far no luck. It is my understanding that Jacob may have had at least one other sibling in the U.S. David

Hello. Wondering if you still frequent this message board. My relatives trace back to Czortkow. I am looking for information on Schloma Frenkel, my great grandfather. I would like to find his parents. His 3rd wife (?) was Ettel (maternal grandfather's name may be Nusin Demant) who died in 1897 in childbirth. Schloma brought up his daughter Ettie, in Suchostaw I believe, a nearby town. Any of these names familiar to anyone?

Seeking Any And All Information on Joseph David Frankel And Wife Jennie-2519 North Stanly Street

Hello All

I am seeking any and all information on Joseph & Jennie Frankel. Mostly I am interested in the wife Jennie. She would have been born about 1895 most likely in Poland. i am trying to find out what her maiden name was. I am hoping it was Fajkes/Faikes. My great-aunt Rose(Fajkes/Faikes)Friedman(deceased) came over in 1922 on the SS Lapland and she was going to a Brother-in-Law Joseph D. Frankel 2519 North Stanley Street, Philadelphia PA.

So, I am assuming that this Jennie was originally a Faikes/Fajkes and related to my great-aunt as a sibling. if anyone has any information on this family it would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find out More information on my grandfathers family. My grandfather is Milton faikes/Fajkes, sister to my great-aunt.

He is in his 90's and does not recall much, and there is no one else I can ask. Any and all help is appreciated.

Frankel>Franklin?

I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with Frankels changing their names to Franklin. The family legend (myth?) is that the Jewish Franklins of Phila./Balto. were originally Frankels, but I haven't found any immigration records yet. They don't seem to have arrived through the Port of Baltimore, at least. There seem to be a lot of Frankels/Frankles who didn't change their names. Does anyone know what the chances were of someone deciding to change Frankel to Franklin? It seems like a fairly obvious modification if you're looking to Americanize the name.

Steve Franklin
Baltimore

Just some general notes...

Most of the Frankels who ended up in the Ukraine became Frenkels. From what I can tell these are generally from the Teomim-Frankel branch. There are a minimum of 5 branches of the Frankel family. They are not descended from the same ancestor but being rabbinic families and Levites they have often intermarried. There is a Rubenstein connection as well. See, for example, http://www.osiek.org/ogf/fraenkel.html The Frenkels who migrated to the US often became Franklins, as did my family.

Your first step should probably be to find out when your people immigrated, through the census records or the Ellis Island database or ship's manifests. Then you can send for records from the INS that may have places of birth, etc. It's a long struggle, one clue at a time.

Re: Reunion

No clue? The Frankels come from Franken in Austria west of Vienna. There are two main branches, the Wallerstein-Frankels and the Teomim-Frankels. Most of the Frankels from "Russia" (actually Eastern Europe) are from the Teomim-Frankel branch. The Teomim-Frankels adopted the Frankel part of their name in Prague in the 17th Century. Most of the rabbis in Eastern Europe were related to the Frankels. The reason most Frankels in the US are from Eastern Europe (former Russian Empire) is because most Jewish people in the US came here from there after 1881, the so-called Third Wave of immigration.

Steve Franklin

He settled in Louisiana and married Emma Loeb and had 5 children - only 3 of which survived. He had a brother named Isaac but I don't think he ever came to America. I am also researching my Frankel and have 52 Frankel names so far, most I know a lot about.
The Jacob (Jakob?) Frankel on my list was born in 1845, died 1934, married a Bertha Kisinski (?), and had no less than 11 children, Isaac (Izaak) being one of them. It has actually from Isaac's line that I come from. Isaac had a son Berthold, who was my father.
Dennis

I have the Fraenkel & Fraenkel book, "Forgotten Fragments of the Fraenkel Family," that has part of the Mirels tree. Let me know what you find out and I'll see if I can find a connection. I've been unable to connect my own family yet. By the way, my website is at http://www.bcpl.net/~franklin/steve.htm

Thanks so much for the info, including the link to the website. I sure am glad I can remember my high school french!!! Interestingly, one of the names listed as a Frankel connection is Mirels, my sister-in-law's maiden name. Guess I'll be contacting her next!
Thanks again
Julia
