Andrew Franks

Hi, My name is Sarah Harris. I live in Craven County. Andrew Franks is my 4X great grandfather. I am related through Barzilla. I know there has been many different spellings of that name, but this is the correct way. I found it on her daughter mattie's (my 3x great grandmother) death certificate @ the register of deeds in New Bern. I have been researching this on and off for the past 5 or 6 years. The farthest I have ever gotten is that Andrew came over from Spain.... then I hit a roadblock. Any info would be appreciated. If there is any questions I can answer I would be more than happy to. I have grown up in Vanceboro and my Grandaddy (Hillary Gaskins) is still living there. I have gained most of my info through him.

Melissa Franks DURLING/DURLAND is my great grandmother. I have found her parents, but have hit a brick wall when trying to trace further back.
Questions:
Who are parents of James Franks and of Maria Daniels?
Could Melissa Franks and Mary Frances Daniels be cousins on the Daniels side?
Following is my current information:
---------------------------------------------------

FRANKS FAMILY (James Orman DURLING/DURLAND’s first wife)
Generation No. 1---JAMES FRANKS (1818-1892) m. MARIA DANIELS (1819-1895) I have been told that James' father may have been Lewis. There is also a story about a Franks travelling to Nova Scotia on the "Charming Molly" (1760) dressed as a woman. I can't confirm.---Children: MELISSA H. FRANKS (b. 1848, White Rock, Kings County, Nova Scotia; d. 1878.); NORMAN J. FRANKS. (b. 1846); ALBERT W. FRANKS; EDDIE V. M. FRANKS (m. JOSEPH H. The last census that William is in for Craven Co, NC is 1850. Since Margarette married someone from Tennessee, I am now looking there for him. It's like he disappeared after 1850.

I have found most of it on the net or Ancestry.com; there was Jewish Franks that owned transport boats (slaves). The was a Franks that was Moravian on the boat with John Wesley and may have been the first convert to the Methodist, unfortunately that Franks died either on the boat or shortly after arriving in the new world. My Franks family, out of Caney Fork TN, consisted of a large number of Methodist Ministers, but we know that was not there mother religion.

We have not found paperwork that properly documents where our Franks came from prior to TN. We know they were in Georgia, but not for sure the location. One oral family history has us coming in with the some French into Mobile Al.

My DNA tests reflect that southern Spain is a possible source of my family, but it also list 25 to 30 other countries. That is my only connection to the Spanish Franks.
You say that you located Franks that were Jewish, Moravian, and Baptist...did you locate any of these in Spain? If so, where exactly in Spain did you locate them? On the 1820 Census for Andrew H Franks, it lists children as 2 males and 1 female. That same census lists him and another adult (presumably his wife). That is why I'm linking Andrew H Franks as William Franks' father; not brother as some have him listed. If we know where in Spain he came from, it will make it easier to find him. Too, does anyone know exactly when Andrew came to Craven County, N.C. If we have that year it will be easier to look up passport information. There are over 2,000 rolls of film for passports. So far, I've only made it thru one roll of film for the microfilmed passports.

I have info from the library in New Bern, NC that tells of how William and Andrew came from Spain to America. It tells that they were on a boat headed to England to visit a sister. The boat had problems and another boat came by and picked up the people, that boat was headed for America not England and that is how they got here.

I see that alot of people have linked Andrew as the brother of William. I assume they linked it that way because Andrew was the bondsman for William Franks in the marriage bond to Betsey Gardner. Since Andrew married Patsey Dixon in 1929 (just 5 years prior to William's marriage) they assume him to be his brother. In the 1820 Census, Andrew listed the following:
Under age 10: 1 male 1 female
Ages 10 to 16: 1 male
Ages 26 to 45: 1 male 1 female

At that time, William would have been 8 years old. Due to that, some people assume that William is the son of Andrew H Franks. Can I ask what information you have that shows Andrew to be the brother of William.

I found Williams daughter: Margarette Bettie Franks. She moved to Tennessee and married a Thomas Smith. However, she moved back to Craven County as her death cert. is from there. I have nothing for William after 1950. And haven't found records for Andrew after 1860.

So you will find that you are related to the Smith's and Franks, I have info on the Smith's also. I have spent probably 12 years searching for info and still have alot left to do, but I do not belong to Ancestry anymore. I am from Vanceboro, NC area but live now in Pamlico County.
Tommy,

Who is the earliest Franks ancestor you can trace your linage to?

There are many Franks in Al, Ms, Tn, Ak, TX, Ok, that trace their linage back to Caney Fork, TN.

Incidentally, General Tommy traces his linage back to Jeremiah Franks, born in Georgia in 1791, then moved to Tn Caney Fork area, where there appeared a large number of Franks that became migratory through the south. Attached is one of the better web sites about the Franks of Caney Fork,

http://lockhart1957.tripod.com/index-GEN.html

Enjoy

Gary C. Both Samuel and Nina lived all of their lives in Craven County. I'm currently compiling info for both the Franks and Morris'. I'm back to only 1842.

This is not my Franks line. But do any of the following names sound familiar to you? Dora Holden Franks, children Gertrude b about 1910, who married a Dills; Arizonia Zara who married Carl Martin, she was b 1922 d 2006; Joseph Adam b 1924, d 1986; Cloner b 1928 d 1990. Harmon Franks was in his uncle's household {William Franks} in Jefferson co NC in 1910. In Swain co NC on the 1920 census with Dora. It looks like this couple had a son named Lomer Jackson Franks b 1925 d 1927 Gaston co NC. Harmond died about 1928. Dora and children are on the 1930 Swain co NC census.

I think William's father was actually Alfred not Albert.

Looks like William was born about 1900 according to his age on the 1911 census. But Alfred's wife Sarah Jane can't be his mother as she's only been married to Alfred for 7 years and had one son.

I think this is the birth ref for William

Birth
Name: FRANKS, William
Sep 1899 Cannock 6B 540

If you purchase this you'll find out if the father was Alfred or Albert.
As he gives his own middle name as Alfred on the marriage certificate it's quite likely he was named after his father.

1911 RG14PN16940 RG78PN1047 RD368 SD2 ED7 SN242
Address: 41 Union St Bridgtown Cannock Staffordshire

FRANKS, Alfred 38 1873 Plumber and Painter Hednesford Staffordshire
FRANKS, Sarah Jane Married 7 years 1 child 39 1872 Cheslyn Staffordshire
FRANKS, Richard Son 13 1898 Painter Cannock Staffordshire
FRANKS, William Son 11 1900 School Cannock Staffordshire
FRANKS, Raymond Son 2 1909 Cannock Staffordshire
PHEASANT, Minnie Stepdaughter 15 1896 Cheslyn Staffordshire
PHEASANT, Elsie Stepdaughter 13 1898 School Cheslyn Staffordshire
TURNER, Eliza Mother In Law Widdow 68 1843 Cheslyn Staffordshire

It may seem that the father's occupation is wrong but remember that the marriage took place 20 years later....
Albert Franks / William Alfred Franks

Hi,
My great grandfather William Alfred Franks married Lydia Maidment in 1931, and lists his father as Albert Franks, Publican. If the date on the marriage certificate is correct then William Alfred was born in 1904, however I can neither find his birth (or death) certificate, or any census records for him or his father. If anyone has done any research into the Franks family I would love any advice, as it is the only part of my tree that I have been unable to progress.

Many thanks,

Christine

My husbands grandfather was Thomas Jacob Franks who came from England on his way to CA. They stopped in a small mining town Eureka, Utah to see some friends but decided to stay there.
