I believe Wayne was my cousin. Did he have a sister,Judy? His parents were Claudia and Wilfred? If this is my cousin, I don't believe any of his Ohio relatives were aware of his passing. Could you give me more details so I can pass this on to his Ohio family? I found this as I was looking for Franz family information. Uncle Wilfred was my dad's brother.

Thanks for the reply. My grandmother (Henrietta Elizabeth (Sauter) Miller) would tend Mary's grave in Hope Cemetery. But, I was too young to ask her questions about Xavier and Mary before they came to the US from Austria, or if they had any children besides their daughter Bertha. Xavier and Mary's daughter "Bertha" married "George Jabob Sauter" and they were my grandma's parents. Bertha died before grandma was married and George Jacob sort of dropped off the map. That is why Henrietta's marriage announcement was issued my her grandmother, Mary T Franz.

Edward J and Ann Franz in Erie Pennsylvania

Looking for information on the German community in Erie Pennsylvania in my search for the parentage of Ann Catherine Franz who married Reginald Perry around 1920. Ann Catherine's parents were Edward J Franz, born in New York around 1880 and both parents were born in Germany. The census states his main language was German, however, so I am thinking he was raised in an almost exclusive German community. His daughter's main language was also put as German though they were born in America. Ann C--the wife--was born in Germany as were both parents. Other children of Edward and Ann C were Agatha and Elizabeth. I believe Edward remarried after Ann's death. New spouse was Hattie A (maiden name unknown) Salchow. Thank you!

Wrong assumption, I thought perhaps they may have been a Palentine who settled in Ireland.

Back to Griffith Valuations for John Tunny, there are 20 in Co. Mayo, 3 in Donegal, 1 Dublin, 2 Tyrone.

There is one memorial inscription for a Mary Tunny but not the mother because of age. Except that it is in Mayo there is no information to tie the family. The same names were used by everyone that is why Owen is unusual.

There are no records for a John Tunny born around 1785 in Co.Mayo or Co. Rosscommon.

I have or had family in Brisbane in the 1960's. Harry Dean was a Member of Parliament at the time. Never been able to make a connection.

Annette Code
ps. I don't know if there are Tithe records on either www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County or
www.igp-web.com + Co.

Thanks for the information. I believe Owen Tunny who was tried in 1836 was my ancestor. I did hear that there was a Thomas tried at the same time, so perhaps it's his brother. Owen's death certificate shows his mother as John and mother Mary.

Re Franz. They came from Germany, not Ireland. I have a fais bit of information about him as he was a missionary who was bought out by John Lang to start a mission at Moreton Bay. They founded the German Station that later became Nundah and were pioneers of Brisbane.

There were a lot of Tunney/Tunnys the majority of which were in Co. May 84 and Donegal 60, all others five or less.
Roscommon 3. The Griffith Valuation from 1846-1864 shows all occupiers of land and is used as a census for that time.

There were 3 Owen Tunny/Tunney, 1 Tunny Donegal, 1 Tunney Fermanagh, 1 Tunney Sligo.

The only records earlier than these are the Tithe records of the 1820s but few of these are online. There are Commercial Directories on line 1824 & 1846 and there are numbers of Tunny/Tunney's in a variety of counties but mostly Dublin.

I found 0 Franz in any of the records I have access to, the closest was the spelling Frenz, Dublin. I also checked an online birth, marriage group/Foundation and they have no births for the spelling Franz in Ireland.

The same Foundation has no record of an Owen Tunny/Tunney 1816 there must be records missing or the County in question does not belong to the Foundation, there are 7 that don't belong to this database. We know there must be some records as the Griffith Valuation clearly shows 3 Tunny/Tunney's. So many records in Ireland were destroyed.

The transportation records at the National Archives:
www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/transportation

Owen Tunny 20, Trial held: Co. Roscommon Larceny 7 years Transportation, date 27/10/36 Doc.Ref 1: TR1,P 192 and the same details for Thomas Tunny age 30, same date, same document, same sentence.

I did find a website by googling Roscommon-Assize Court 1836
and got a website, this is a commercial website so I can't post the name.

The earliest record for the name Tunny in Roscommon is 1837 which indicates missing/lost records. For Mayo the records went back to 1805 for the surname Tunny but no Thomas or an Owen. so they either were not born in Mayo or the parish they were from had no earlier records. Mayo and Roscommon do have a shared border.

Annette Code
no relation

Need some help researching my GGG grandfather, Conrad Franz. He was born in Germany 11-24-1802 and died 12-21-1868. I believe he came to America in 1836, as that is the date listed for his son, Joseph Franz, arriving (Joseph was 2 years old). Conrad married Anna Mary Adel. She was born 1803 in Germany and died 1878. The only child I know of is Joseph Franz, (my GG grandfather) born 8-9-1834 in Germany, died 6-4-1920 in Dover, Ohio. I believe Conrad ended up somewhere around Dover, Ohio.

I have two August Franz's in my lineage and would like to explore possible connections if you have any. There is also a marriage to the Mundel family from Germany (similar to your Mandel).

obit fyi: Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz. 1913-2009

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.

Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz
Posted: Monday, Jan 12, 2009 - 04:05:48 pm PST
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE. WASHINGTON.

Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2008, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Gretchen was born in Helena, Mont., on Sept. 10, 1913. She moved to California at the age of 17, where she attended secretarial school. Her secretarial and administrative skills led to a wide variety of jobs in government and the private sector. In the 1960s, Gretchen moved to the Palm Springs area where she worked for the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and served as a legislative assistant to numerous Republican state senators, assemblymen and members of Congress from the Palm Springs area.

Gretchen was well known in the community for her volunteer and political activities. She was affiliated with the California Women for Agriculture since its inception, was a member of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments and the Valley Players Guild as well as many other non-profit organizations. She served on the local Republican State Central Committee and the State Republican Central Committee for over 25 years. She was a member of the California Republican Party, the Riverside County Republican Party, the Palm Springs Republican Assembly, the Desert Republican Assembly and Ranch Mirage Republican Women’s Federated. In April 1983, the California Legislature recognized her with special honors and highest commendations.

Gretchen loved to entertain and was well known for her Pu Pu (Hawaiian hors d’oeuvre) parties. She also delighted in her collection of elephants – all shapes and varieties that she purchased and was given by friends over the years. One of her greatest passions was reading, and well into her nineties, she would quote from memory poems by Longfellow and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as sing little ditties she remembered from her childhood.

Gretchen retired in 1984 at the age of 71 to marry long-time friend, Walter Franz of Palm Desert and Moses Lake. She and Walter took a year-long honeymoon to travel the world and spend time at their beloved home in Maui. During their years together, in addition to their Maui home, they built a home on Moses Lake where they enjoyed entertaining and continued their involvement in the Republican Party. Throughout their marriage, they traveled extensively and won numerous prizes for their ballroom dancing skills. After Walter’s passing in November 1998, Gretchen returned to California and lived for a number of years at the Fountains of Carlotta in Palm Desert. In 2008, she moved to University Village in Thousand Oaks to be near family.

Gretchen is survived by her daughter Adrianne (William) Knox of Lansing, Mich.; her son Ronald J. (Susan) Poulson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Gretchen’s request, there will be no service. Her ashes will be scattered near her Maui home. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer Association, California Central Coast Chapter, 1339 Del Norte Road, Camarillo, CA 93010.
