I have a great great grandfather from Canada who's name was Joseph Frappy. He was a ships captain and married a widow who sailed from Ireland. She was hoping to find work there. She had 3 sons who sailed with her. The youngest one died on the voyage to Canada. She dispared so greatly over having to throw her baby in the ocean for a burial, that the Captain Frappy said he would put the child in a casket and keep him in his cabin until the voyage was over. Meanwhile he fell in love with the lady we only know as Mrs. Grames. He asked her to marry him, and she told him she would if he would give up the sea and turn to farming instead. He agreed. They were married in Montreal, Canada. I'm not sure of the dates right now, but it had to be the late 1700's or early 1800's They had a daughter named Sarah Eliza who married John Davey or Davy. Their union produced my Grandfather William George Washington Davy
Tragic Romance

My grandmother Elizabeth Richardson and a man named Frappier from Montreal,Quebec loved each other and she became pregnant as a result. Evidently he was from a wealthy family and his mother or grandmother would not approve the marriage...Frappier went out drinking and drove off a bridge and died around 1928. My grandmother was born around 1907 and I assume they were within 6 years of each other in age. The boy was born in 1929. Any help I can get on this would solve a huge mystery for my dying father and his whole family.

Re: Ernest Frappier Hespeler Ontario,

Hey Ian,

I am your Grandfather's sister Verna's great-grandson.

First of all, I'd like to apologize. My grandparents very much dislike communication with your parents and aunts and uncles. Why? I have no idea, but I can assure you that my family doesn't feel that way.

Second of all, this is what I know. Ernest, Aunt "MaeMae", and my great-grandmother were orphaned. Their father died, and their mother went off to Arizona, as she didn't really care to much for her children. If I remember correctly, none of the grandparents really stepped up. Their life between the ditching of the children to the marriage of my great-grandfather is very unclear, and I wish I knew more. What I can tell you is that the father was French, cue the last name.

Some other things I can tell you are this: Verna married Harold Harvey, but MaeMae, I believe, remained alone. Verna had 2 children, one is alive and well, the other ceased contact with my grandfather after Verna's death. Verna raised her children alone because Harold was an alcoholic. Verna's son had three children, and he also has 5 grandchildren, and one expected. I am of the oldest of these 5. Verna and MaeMae are buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery by Turner Park Library in Hamilton, Ontario. From what I've heard, my great-grandmother, for whatever reason, had contact and visited her mother and lived by her in Arizona.

Hopefully this is of some use to you!

Augustin Bonneterre

Does any one know who this man was? Who were his parents? Where in Canada did he come from?
Born abt. 1780, Canada. He purchased a Pawnee slave for a wife.
Re: "Collections of The State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 3, page 257; Augustin Grignon (1745-1816), Grignon's Recollections"; "There wee several Pawnee slaves owned by the whites at Machinaw, some of whom were repeatedly sold. I remember of a Frenchman there of the name of Augustin Bonneterre purchasing a Pawnee woman, and moving her; they moved to the Bay and raised a large family of girls, some of whom are still living".

Children I have documented:
Josephte (Frank Provonsal), Elizabeth (Louis Bourdon), Marie, Julie (John Baptiste Guard), Angelique (John Baptiste Girard), Josephine (Pierre Carbonneau)and Marie (Lucas Buisson).
Of these Elizabeth Bonneterre Bourdon was my ancestral grandmother.

I was also able to find the following information:

Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society

Reference: INDEX[p.] [p.]
page 723
Excerpt: Bonneterre%ehl%, Augustin%ehl%, Indian losses, 671. Bostwick, John, Capt., Norfolk reg., 652; letters...

State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Volume 11

DICKSON TO LAWE.
page 296
1 Augustin Bonneterre, a Green Bay settler.-- Ed .[p.296] express but I hope that you have been able to get them off before this. Jean Veaus Voyage here was certainly well meant, but had I listened to him & his report respecting the Indians, it might have been attended with the most fatal effect to myself & others. Lieut Grignon seems much vexed that Mr. [MS. obscure] should have neglected calling for his letter for [obscure] he was acquainted so to do, & it being really of great importance, I wish this matter cleared up to my Satisfaction. In the enclosed Statement respecting the Conduct of the Poutiwatami [Pottawattomie] nation last year & their subsequent behaviour here, you will judge for yourself, but had you been acquainted with the full extent of their villainy you would never have said from Mr. Jean Veaus report that What had been said of the Poutiwatamies was mostly false. I hope that you are now convinced. Mr. Augustin Grignon will inform you more fully respecting this business. I recommend to you to be particularly attentive to the motions of the Indians on the South Side of the River and note down the different Reports from thence.

INDEX.
page 515
Bonneterre, Augustin, Green Bay settler, 295, 306.

INDEX.
page 469
Bonneterre, Augustin, Green Bay settler, 127.

Midwest Pioneers: Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 19

1695–1821: REGISTER OF BAPTISMS OF THE MISSION OF ST.
page 128
On the same day and in the same year, we, the undersigned priest, missionary at michilimakina, supplied the Ceremonies of Baptism to Marie, two years old, born of augustin Bonneterre and of a woman Savage.
November 2008 Update

Since my previous post I have found some wonderful information on Eustache Bachand Frappier & Mathilde Brien dit Desrochers. They first immigrated to Holyoke, MA @ 1880. I found them in the 1880 census in Holyoke under the name "Eustace Frappe" with there 12 children:
Joseph, Udoxie, Eustache, Alphonse, Hannine, Jerimiah, Mary, Eugenie, Delia, Arthur, Alderic & Alneedos (correct name is Hormidas). There was another son, Antoine born in 1881. Mathilde died 1890 in Holyoke, Eustache traveled to Lowell (possibly re-married in Lowell)and then back to Canada were he died in 1914.
I would enjoy chatting with any family members of these children and sharing information :-)

Going through a box of a late cousin's old photos, I found three photos of Frappiers. One is of Mrs. William Frappier and another is of the marriage of her son in Montreal in 1955. It appears another is of the marriage of a William Frappier (presumably a son). Another photo I had seen previously but do not have at hand right now was from Verdun. I would be happy to share these if anyone is related and would like a copy.

Barbara at bburt001@nycap.RR.com
