Frasers of Boleskine, Dores. Angus Fraser & Catherine McKay

Hi All,

Just getting those genealogical juices going again after an absence of a few years.

A distant relative that I met after I visited Scotland several years ago provided priceless information about our Fraser's from Boleskine, Inverness-shire.

Mainly Angus Fraser of Balnaguilon married to Catherine McKay of Balnafettack in the Parish of Dores on the 13th February 1765.

They had five sons and three daughters as Jannet(1769), Alexander (1771), Catherine(1774), William(1776), Margaret(1780), John(1783), Donald(1788) and Angus(1791).

My lineage is from the second son in William Fraser b. 10-Sep-1776. He resided until his death at Muirnich farm near Stratherrick. Strangely, he also married (8th Aug 1828) a Margaret McKay after the death of his first wife Catherine McDonald (another mystery, cannot confirm date of birth/death/reason for death).

I've hit a brickwall with Angus and Catherine being unable to find birth/death dates or any other parental information.

Does anyone have any connections that are familiar with any of these ole Fraser's. I would be most grateful for any info, even some history on any of the places listed.

Many thanks in advance.

Earle Fraser
Western Australia.
Fraser/McAdam/Boorne

My great grandmother (whom I never met) was Margaret Elizabeth Fraser. She married a McAdam to have her son, James Fraser McAdam. The husband, McAdam, died in 1896 a few months shy of my grandfather's birth in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She then married a man named George Boorne. I know this because I took a trip to Alberta, Canada and found the records in a book they have there. Margaret then died in 1905, leaving my grandfather an orphan. George Boorne apparently "gave him back" to the Fraser family to raise. I cannot find any information about George Boorne, Margaret Elizabeth Fraser, or the McAdam that she married. Does anyone out there have a clue?

I am trying to find connections to Alexander Fraser, born April 12, 1813 in Ross-shire, Scotland. I believe he had two brothers-James and Duncan. He apparently married twice: once to Elizabeth (believed Ross) and once to Catherine Sutherland. I am looking for his ancestors. Dates of marriage? Did Alexander emigrate? Descendants now live in Canada but may have routed through US. Missouri was mentioned in connection to one son William Ross Fraser who eventually was married to Johann Munro and living i Bruce County, Ontario. Any connections, anyone?

Andrew Fraser

Trying to find information on Andrew Fraser, born around 1898 in Hamilton, Scotland. He married a Jane Haddow Hamilton in June 1823 and between them had 9 children that I know of. Andrew last appears on the 1841 census with his family and they did have a son, Matthew, around 1847. On the 1851 census Jane is a widow. Andrew was a slater / plasterer by trade and the eldest son in this family line always sems to have been called Andrew, as his son was.

I am particularly keen to find out bout his death and who his parents were.

Many Thanks.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 0344-08
April 25, 2008
Missing WWII Airmen are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of 11 U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are (see link for complete release)

Tech. Sgt. William L. Fraser, of Maplewood, Mo.;

all U.S. Army Air Forces. The dates and locations of the funerals are being set by their families.

Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army.

On Dec. 3, 1943, these men crewed a B-24D Liberator that departed Dobodura, New Guinea, on an armed-reconnaissance mission over New Hanover Island in the Bismarck Sea. The crew reported dropping their bombs on target, but in spite of several radio contacts with their base, they never returned to Dobodura. Subsequent searches failed to locate the aircraft.

In 2000, three Papua New Guineans were hunting in the forest when they came across aircraft wreckage near Iwaia village. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) was notified and began planning an investigation. In 2002, a JPAC team traveled to Deboin Village to interview two individuals who said they knew where the crash site was. However, the witnesses could not relocate the site.

In 2004, the site was found about four miles from Iwaia village in Papua New Guinea where a JPAC team found an aircraft data plate that correlated to the 1943 crash.

Between 2004 and 2007, JPAC teams conducted two excavations of the site and recovered human remains and non-biological material including some crew-related artifacts such as identification tags.

Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.
Hugh, Thomas, William Fraser

My third great grandfather was Hugh Fraser, received a UEL grant, prob. settled in NY, Albany area before Rev. War. Hugh born May 1747, prob. Invernessshire, Inverness, Scotland to William Fraser and Grace MacIntosh and came over to US with his wife and 4 children (more born later) and at least two brothers, William and Thomas. Hugh married Charity Blake In Scotland. Hugh and Charity had 9 children, according to his UEL application, 4 of the daughters received a UEL grant at age 21. They were Charlotte b. 1795, Elizabeth, Lucretia and Sally. Know one son was named Simon. There were 9 children in all. Assume the other 4 were males since 4 daughters got land grants but have no proof. The sex of the children was not listed in the UEL land grant application. One of the male descendents lived in or around Stormont, Ontario area and was a gov. agent there. Charlotte was my great grandmother. She married Horace Ward and eventually they moved to Kent Co., MI where they raised a family of 15 and both died and are buried there. Would be thankful for any help on the siblings of Charlotte and their families.

I would appreciate information about James FRASER and his wife Margaret PATERSON. He was born in Scotland about 1809 and, according to family Bible records, died in Chicago in 1858. She was born in 1799 in Monroe, MI, and died in 1878 possibly in Monroe. I have a newspaper announcement of their daughter Margaret P.'s marriage to John B. NICHOL in 1856. The wedding took place in Buffalo, NY, where the FRASERS were living at the time. Their children were born in Niagara, Canada, according to the 1850 U.S. census. Thanks for sending me any thoughts you might have on where to go from here.
Maureen

Lamond: Lemon: Fraser: Frazer : Frager

seeking a connection mid-1800's between Annie Lamond/Lemon and Robert Fraser (b. 1832 Scotland.)

Mr. Fraser retired from the military while posted in Lower Canada and settled eventually somewhere in Ontario. He and Annie had 7 children: Donald, Margaret, Catherine, Christina, Hugh, Mary & John. They were Roman Catholic and Mary apparently became a nun (anyone who might know where to research that, please let me know.) Prior 1890, Robert took Catherine & Christina back to Scotland to live. I can find no record of a marriage or the births or what happened to Annie. I am also not sure if Annie was the birth mother of Donald and Catherine,(due to time frames) however she did raise them.

On Catherine' marriage & Robert's death certificate's Annie's maiden name is Lamond. On Christina's death certificate, Annie's maiden name is Lemon. Annie was supposedly from Ontario, but Donald was born in NB, Margaret & Christina in N.S., Hugh in Quebec and the others in Ontario. Donald was my grandfather.

Considering borders were not clearly defined till later in the 1800's, there is a chance the births and marriage occurred in what is now the USA.

Name variations on documentations are Lamond: Lemon: Fraser: Frazer : Frager

John Fraser was b abt 1796 according to the 1841 Liverpool LAN ENG census.
He appears with second wife, m 1841 L'pool, Hannah Landsborough, ("Lansburg" at marriage; Hannah did not write but left her mark), d/o Samuel "Lansburg". She is most likely Hannah McClansburgh b 1806 Urr KKD, d/o Samuel McClansburgh and Mary "Gladrey" which I believe to be Gladney.
The "Sct" born children in the household in 1841 (marked below "*") are children of John Fraser b abt 1796, m 23 Mar 1818 Inverness INV, Janet MacIntosh. I believe Janet died between 1836 - 1841
Children of this first marriage were (from IGI):
William 1819
*Elizabeth 1821
John Simon 1823
John 1824
Simon 1826
*Thomas 1830
*Janet (Jessie?) 1833
*James 1836

I seem to recall Fort Augustus was mentioned as a birthplace in a census somewhere for one of the children.

I suspect Johns father, William Fraser, m 5 Aug 1791 Inverness INV, Janet Fraser, and had issue (as per IGI, and there may be others):
Hugh 1792
Thomas 1794
John 1796
Janet 1811

any ideas appreciated
Pat

I'm looking for the parents and spouse of Joseph. He emigrated to the US sometime before 1800, when he is found on the census for Union Twp, Fayette, PA. I believe his wife's name was Margaret, but I'm not sure. I'm descended from his son, John Wesley Fraser, who married Rebecca Peach. He had four other children that I know: William, James P., Margaret, and Elizabeth. I don't know anything about their vitals or marriages. Can anyone help?

David McLeod was born April 27th 1846 in Tatamagouche and Isabella in 1848 in Limerock both died in Denmark and are buried in the Denmark cemetery.

This was my GGF and I started my journey in Genealogy looking for info on him. I have found many other family members and friends thru the years, but He remains elusive. Family lore has it he was b. in Scotland [TS says 1823], and immigrated to USA thru Canada [not sure where he came in Nova Scotia, Upper NYS or Buffalo]. Somehow he met and married my GGR Sarah Young living in Waterford, Erie County, PA around 1860 [neither found 1860 Census], and settled in Buffalo, Erie County, NY [1870 Census]. This is where they raised their family and he died July 1881 of some kind of accident [acc to Forest Lawn Cemetery records].
I was unable to find any death information ie. obit, death certificate, news article, and would appreciate any direction one could suggest. Thnks in advance. Terry Fraser Gray

I am in need of information for Jane Fraser, born on 10 Jan 1858, in Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland. Her Parents are George Fraser and Mary Ballantyne. The maternal Grandparents are: Adam Ballantyne and Robina Scott Dickson. Jane married a Robert Shipley on 31 Dec 1878 at Pilrig Free Manse Church in Edinburgh, Scotland. Robert and Jane had seven children: Mary Ballantyne Shipley (1880), William (1882), Margaret Stevenson Shipley (1884), Robert Stevenson Shipley (1886), Frederick (1-1889), Mary Ballantyne Shipley (12-1889), and Georgina Fraser Shipley (1892). Jane Fraser Shipley came to Canada possibily for the first in 1903 with her husband. Robert Shipley died 06 Aug 1907, in St. Catherine's, Lincoln, Ontario. I do not know of Jane's death date or where she is buried. I really need help with these facts. I find her and I also may find her husband. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eliza Anne ___ Fraser wife and widow of Capt James Fraser died on Fraser Island, Australia

Looking for Eliza Anne Fraser's maiden name. and her vitals.
Jane Martin
Jamesport, Mo (Amish country)

Great Scotswomen
No 11: Eliza Anne Fraser
BORN: STROMNESS, ORKNEY, c1798
DIED: PROBABLY MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, 1858

IN 1835, Eliza Fraser and her husband, Captain James Fraser, left their three children at home in Stromness in the care of the local minister, and sailed to Sydney on the "Stirling Castle".

Shipwrecked in May 1836 off eastern Australia, the Frasers and other crew members survived until the end of June, when they eventually reached Great Sandy Island - later renamed Fraser Island. Some accounts suggest that she gave birth to a child who died while they were adrift.

Exhausted, hungry and ill, the party encountered the native people, the Badtjala. They later claimed to have been captured, stripped and forced to work, alleging that the captain was murdered and the first mate died of burns inflicted by their captors.

After their rescue in August, Fraser, now widowed, became a celebrity, gaining sympathy and financial help from a subscrip- tion fund. She remarried in 1837 and returned to Britain with her new husband, Captain Alexander J Greene. Initially they kept the marriage secret, while she pleaded destitution.

Soon after their rescue, she and the second mate had both given official reports of their experiences. These were retold repeatedly in papers and books, and it became hard to establish what actually happened on the island. Later consideration suggests colonial attitudes and misunderstandings may lie behind stories of cruel treatment. Fraser also probably exaggerated her claims to attract attention and financial aid.

The story has remained part of Australian popular culture, inspiring paintings (Sydney Nolan), films, a novel (Patrick White) and poetry.

• From The Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women (Edinburgh University Press, www.eup.ed.ac.uk)

This article: http://heritage.scotsman.com/greatscots.cfm?id=929352006

Last updated: 26-Jun-06 01:20 BST
