I have found a Sheila Fox who I think is descended from William and Jannet, and is doing family history. I have emailed her a link to this forum. I have also found a John FRATER from the same area to see if he is descended as well.

Sheila has done work that is tying up separate branches in my own research.

Regards

Kerry (Frater)

Re: family bible of William and Janet Frater, of Scotland

This family appears on 1861-1891 Scotland census, in Town: Galashiels; County: Selkirkshire. Janet is Head of Household in 1901. It appears that they lived in the USA for only a short time, while William and Helen were born.

William Frater, born Langholm, Dumfriesshire.

The names and dates in the family bible:

Registry
Of the family of William and Janet Frater

William Frater Born 27th August 1844
Died 4th June 1849

Robert Frater Born 14th July 1846

James J. Frater Born 8th August 1850
Died 11th August 1852

William Frater Born 12th November 1852

Helen Frater Born 6th December 1855

Margaret Frater Born 21st December 1857

Annie Frater Born 9th August 1860

Mary Frater Born 11th September 1862

John Frater Born 21st December 1844 [note: possible transcription error - perhaps 1864, not 1844]

Alexander McGregor Baillie Born 25th August 1855
Bit of a tough one. William is a very popular name along with the other ones used. Robert Frater (in the more popular parts of Scotland where FRATER's lived) is less so. But if the tradition was held that Robert would be Janet's Father.

If William was born circa 1822 I have two that might match in my lists.

26 Nov 1837	FRATER	WILLIAM	JANET FLOCKHART/FR5820	M	EDINBURGH	685/01 0065

1 Jan 1844	FRATER	WILLIAM	JANNET SMITH/FR816	M	LANGHOLM	839/00 0003

I have a WIlliam, son of William where William Snr (b circa 1808 in Scotland) and migrated to New York, but I think he married an American.

I presume the first William died as the middle child was also William and born in the US. Can you give an indication of the birth years of William and/or Helen. I am trying to work out when they left Scotland.

My indexes do not show a William, Robert or James born to a WIlliam & Janet. But there are so many gaps in there.

I also checked my lists to see if a William married a Margaret (presuming tradition of 1st born boy and 2nd born girl) but I have none within a sensible date range.

Are there any references to an area of Scotland?

Kerry

If anyone is interested in the family bible of
William (born circa 1822) and Janet Frater, of Scotland, please contact me.

The Frater names (and birth dates) listed are for:
William, Robert, James J., William, Helen, Margaret, Annie, Mary, John.

The two middle children (William, Helen) were born in Pennsylvania, USA.

Helen's son, Christopher Boyd, is also mentioned, as is Helen's second husband, Alexander McGregor Baillie.

Helen (died 1936) and Alexander (died 1923) are buried in Concord, Massachusetts, USA.

Hopefully this bible can be returned to the Frater family.

Have you had any luck with this thread? I have something that might be of interest. On the 1851 Census Robert and Isabella Frater are living next door to my ggg-grandparents, Charls and Maria Palmer. In 1861 there is a Thomas Frater, grandson, age 11, who is living with them at Monkwearmouth. I believe he is the son of Elizabeth Palmer Frater and William Frater. William went to Australia with Kennet Palmer - Charles and Maria's son. Is there any tie in to any of this or am I trying to make something out of nothing??
Kind regards,
Susan McIntosh

Hello all,

I hope your research continues well. Mine moves slowly.
Does anyone know the actual burial locations of Oliver FRATER & Ellen BUTLER?

I know Ellen died in 1914 in Edmonton. She separated from Oliver before 1909. I know this because I have since found out that my Grandfather was arrested in Camberwell at the age of 8 for walking the streets without a proper Guardian and was sent to an Industrial School in Leicestershire till the age of 16 for his sins!!

A few notes still exist regarding the School (visitor's books unfortunately are missing) but a note was put in the book about Edward wanting to go "home" but Ellen wrote to say that could the school find somewhere for him to work as she was unable to look after him due to poverty and that she had separated from her husband.

I believe that Oliver died in Marylebone in 1921.

I would like to visit their graves, if I knew where they were.

Best wishes for 2009

Kerry

Robert Frater and wife Isabella---Houghton le Spring,Durhan,England

In the 1861 census for Shotton Colliery, Durham there is an Isabella Frater, age 48, born Washington, Durham listed as a Pauper. Listed with her are sons Robert 13, Morgan 7, and a gdaughter Mary Besson age 12 who was born in Percy Main(Tynemouth), Northumberland late 1849. In 1851, Robert Frater,42, born Fatfield,Durham and wife Isabella 41, born Washington, with sons William 17 and Robert 4. In 1841 Robert Frater and Isabella are living in Houghton le Spring with daughter Margaret 9, William 7, and Moses 3. Who were parents of Robert and Isabella Frater?

I have found various references and spellings of Mary Besson which include Beson, Beeson, and (Beason, which the family declares is correct)! What were her parents names, etc? Mary married William Ferguson Q4 1867 in Easington. The 1871 census shows her with husband and daughters Mary A. 2 and Jane 6 months. Evidently they went to New South Wales at some point and are not on the 1881 census. William Ferguson died at some point and she married George Rees Q2 1882 in Chester le Streed, Durham The 1891 census lists son John Ferguson 20, and daughter Isabella 18, both born in Morton, Durham, Ann 11, born South Australia and four othe Rees children, plus a boarder, Robert Frater 47 born in Hetton.

Any one connected to this family? Who were her parents? I have two cousins approaching 90 years, and Mary Beason/George Rees were their grandparents.

Thank you,
Carl Willis

i
Peter FRATER marrying Jane STARK in London/Surrey

Hi.
I am doing a one name study of the FRATER name. I have come across a branch in London which is not linked to my own, which is unusual. From the databases I have to hand, I believe that I have created a simple tree. I am looking to see if these links have meaning to anyone on the list.
Jane STARK born around 1816 in Southwark London married Peter FRATER (born around 1811) on an unknown date (pre 1837?). Some of their children included the name Stark in their names.
Matthew Stark FRATER b qtr March 1843
John Stark FRATER b qtr March 1849
Robert FRATER b 1850
Emma Frater b 1852
Peter Robert FRATER b 1853
David Fleming FRATER b 1855
Margaret FRATER b 1858

There may be other children.
When you say no other information is known, I don't know if that means you don't have their marriage info but the IGI shows a marriage of these two (presumably) on 06 JAN 1744 Cavers, Roxburgh, Scotland. Batch #M117852 refers.

Seeking information about the Fraiter family of Roxburgh Scotland. John Fraiter married Margaret Smith and had at least two children in Cavers, Roxburgh: Helen (b 1753) and John (1750). No other information is known, including birth place/date of father John Fraiter. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Lucy,
Just to let you know. I am still digging. I have been back to the library to track down some more BMD's and to stretch the dates I am looking at towards that era.
Unfortunately the FRATER men at that time in Lodon don't seem to have had a good track record.
I hope we are better these days.
I will send on details as soon as I can hang some elements together that make better sense.

Please keep in contact and let me know if you find anything. I have been told that the FRC in Islington should be able to help me look up some records. I have never been yet but I am trying to plan a work trip to London that will give me enough time to pop in.

Best wishes

Kerry

I am the Grand daughter of Elsie Frater Munson. She was the daughter of John Frater who was the son of Shade (Shadrick, Sharic Frater.) They were citizens of Athens, Chandler and other places in the Tyler, Texas area.
I have been researching our family tree and have had great success. I would like to compare notes with you about our obviously common links in the Frater chain.
We had a Frater Family meeting in Tyler in January and L. C. Frater was supposed to have attended but he didn't because of the weather.
Please e-mail me and we can share family info. It's great to find more cousins.

Re: James Frater

Lucy,
I think your J W O may be linked to my family tree.
I am descended from James Frater (Gt Gt Grandad) who moved from Scotland in the 1820's to live in London (Islington area).

I say you do not have dates but you can make guesstimates based on your age, and your mother's age.

My Grandfather moved out of London as a teenager to go to South Wales circa 1910. This means that in my direct line only one FRATER was born and died in London. This was Oliver FRATER. Common and repeated names are James William & Oliver. I have logged 21 descendants of James, so far, with the name James or William or Oliver.

I also have tabled all the BMD's of FRATER's in England & Wales between 1837 and 1919. The tree and table are on my website www.myforefathers.co.uk.

I do not have a James William Oliver in my tree yet, but the BMD does show a James William O born Qtr Dec 1909 in Islington Vol 1b page 284. Is this the right time period?

Islington can provide you with with a birth certificate based on the date and name. They did for my Grandfather.

I am trying to find out if they have an "archives" office which I can visit to do lookups as I have done for my family links in South Wales.

Based on the name and time period I believe he is linked with my family.

Please get in touch if you think I can be of more help.

Kerry

There is a family of Frater's that were native to the Okaloosa- Walton County area. I am doing research on a related line of whom Angus is the oldest son, with a brother Ryan and a sister, Allice. My Angus was born in 1896. If I come across any information I will pass it along.
