Hi,
We share the same relatives!! My grandmother is Deliah Freake Boland, her father was Samuel Freake, Benson's brother. This is my mothers family on her mothers side.
Samuel Freake , my Great grandfather married Bessie Lewis, and they moved to Botwood. My grandmother Deliah moved to Gander and married my pop Ellis Boland. They had 6 children , one died in Infancy. The family moved to Topsail, CBS , and then moved to St.John's.
I am in the midst of tracking down the Freake/Freke Line as well, it is very hard to find anything!!
My grandmother was raised United religion, but looking on my great grandfather, his son Hubert , and my nan and her son Nelson, they all seem to have an olive complexation and am wondering if Beuthuk Indian blood right be in our history. It would make since that few paper trails are found if our european ancestors mixed with Natives. thet also have lived in areas where the native beuthuk Indians lived. I am trying to see if I can follow this lead, I am looking into MUN being able to trace family DNA to see if native DNA exists in our family tree, or if we are truely of European ancestry.
Contact me and i can provide more family names from this branch of the family.
Deborah Hillier
hillierdeborah@hotmail.com

Hello all,

I'm researching Freke/Freake families of Fogo Island. My ancestors are Benson Freake(b.1898), son of Hubert Joel Freake(b.1872) and Phoebe Ann Peyton. Hubert's parents are Samuel Freke and Mary Ann Cull (married 1869).

I'm curious where the Freke line goes from there... anyone have any info relating to the family of Samuel Freke? I'm willing to work with relatives to uncover the mysteries!

Cheers,

A

You just took my breath away! This is the absolute first connection I have had with my Grandfathers family since I orginally started this. The whole thing was for my grandmother who wanted to find out who her father was. I tried my best to get that info for her up untill she died 2 years ago. Since all these conversations are posted on the internet I would like to talk through email if that is okay with you. my address is mgoodyear49@hotmail.com. I live here in Bay Bulls, just outside of St. John's, NL. There are things I would rather keep just between relatives and as it now seems you are a cousin.

Is it possible that Valentine and Ester parents of Simon are my g-g grandparents? Would your father remember Gertude Hurley who married Patrick Joseph Walbourne? If so would he have any time line on when she left for Halifax and returned with a baby who was my grandmother. I still think that my nan's father wasn't from Halifax but Fogo Island and that she was prageant when she left.

My grandfather was Joseph Freake as I have told you, son of Adam Freake and Elizabeth Walbourne. His brothers were Leo, Ambrose, Patrick, Lynn and a sister Mary and a step brother named Kyran. My grandmother was Margaret Mary Hurley, her mother was Gertude Hurley, g-g-grandmother was Mary J Miller, her mother was Margaret Sargant who married Frank Sargant. These things my grandmother told me when things started with this ancestory thing. They had three children Beatrice Alice Freake, Robert Joseph Freake (died by his first birthday of whooping cough) and William Freake. Beatrice who married Robert Hennessey of Harbour Grace. my mom had 8 children and William married Margaret Brown had two children. Our names are Madonna Gertude, Sharon Susan, James Vincent, Robert Joseph, William, Joseph Stephen Adam, Margaret Ellen, and Clark who died within hours of birth.

At the time of my grandmothers death she left behind 5 generations of us and she lived to see them all. She died in November of 2008 at 98. All five generations were there at the funeral along with relatives from Fogo Island.

My grandmothers mother married Patrick Joseph Walbourne who was the brother of Elizabeth Walbourne who married Adam Freake which made Elizabeth Walbourne her mother in law and aunt by her brothers marriage. Grand mother had no real brothers or sisters but through her moms marriage she gained 10 step sisters and brothers. She never lived them and was raised by her grandparents.

I have all the freake names I could find through the census, death records, marriages, and births. It seems Adam changed religions which caused me to run into brick walls because I never knew there was a change in religion until a few years back. Apparantely you didn't talk about those things and my grandmother was true to the old ways.

Please continue to contact me, I'm sure there is more info I can offer to help you and you me. Use my email address for more privacy okay. In looking for things I have come across other conversations I have had on the internet. Wasn't struck with that finding. Thank you Madonna

I was speaking to my father and he said that my grandfather Wilson was the son of Valentine Freake who was actually Adam's brother.
Valentine and Adam had a sister named Eva who married Joseph Small from Fogo in her first marriage. In her second marriage she married a Green from Carmanville.
Valentine married Elizabeth Collins from Indian Islands. She died soon after the birth my grandfather Wilson. A little while after, Valentine married Esther Brown from Joe Batt's Arm.
They had 6 boys and one girl; Howard, Pearl (married a Roland Keats from Barr'd Islands), Edward, Ronald (died has a teenager), Hubert, Simon, and Andrew.

Did your grandfather have a brother name Ambrose.

I will keep in contact with more info.
Hi Craig my name is Madonna. My family are also from Joe Batts Arm. My grandfather was Joseph Freake and my grandmother was Margaret Hurley. My grandfathers parents were Adam and Elizabeth Freake (Walbourne). Adam was supposed to have had brothers but because of all the religion changes I don't know who they are. The name Wilson sounds familiar to me. I am hoping that he is one of Adams brothers. Maybe we can help each other. I think my great grandfather was Simon but still unsure until I can put together the brothers and sisters and tie everyone together. I would be happy to share what I have with you if you would share back with me. I have found once you give the information to alot of people there is no more contact from them. Share and share alike it should be right. Will be looking forward to hearing again from you.

She passed away last month, and I decided to keep trying to put it together. I am having no luck with it. I think its because there were some religion changes starting with my grandfathers father. I don't know what religion they orginally were therefore I have no idea where to start. If you have anything that you would like to share with me I would be very grateful. If I have anything that you would like to have that I have which isn't very much I to will share with you. thanks madonna

Hi my name is madonna and I'm Joseph Freake's granddaughter. I have been trying to put together a family tree for my grandmother margaret freake.
