Oh no Dave, All of my Freed info is direct from you. I was adding to John F. Miller only, simply because he is mentioned. I sure wish I could find a few from that line. Possibly a Miller descendant may recognize it. I do know how confusing it is, it took me quite sometime to find you, and correct Freed's myself, LOL. But glad I did, I adore my Freed lineage.

I would never alter your work or our Freed history, with another person's assumptions. If there were any credible changes, I'm sure you would be the first to let myself and the rest of our Freed's know. And only then, would I change anything.

Miller is a common name too. My goodness there were a lot of them. And again with many fathers, brothers, and son's named alike. Even difficult to pinpoint the Miller's of Alexandria, Indiana.

Thanks -
Brenda

Brenda, I`m assuming this is your message. Please don`t use any Freed family information from Stella`s message in your family tree. Our Joseph born 1791 and Elizabeth Shuman Freed don`t belong in this tree Stella posted. Stella mistakenly added our GGGgrandparents Joseph and Elizabeth to her family tree. It`s an easy thing to do with all the Joseph, John, Jacob, Henry, and Augustus Freeds listed out there on the internet. It gets confusing ! Dave Boynton

The names and birth dates of the children of John Friedt and Elizabeth Funkhouser disagree with each other in most all of the Freed Family files. The correct names and birth dates also can be found in the Funkhouser family files and they ALL agree with each other. The Funkhouser Family Files also include a Samuel R Freed born 13 Sept 1796. None of the Freed Family Files include him.

Hi Ron,

I am also a descendent of Benjamin F. and Harriet Freed. I have much of the information that you list in your previous post, but not all. I am especially interested in John and Margaret being buried in a Mennonite Cemetery. Do they show up in any Mennonite records? I also have Quaker ancestors (in another branch of my family) and the Meeting records are rich sources of narrative information.

I see that you have John Fried's parents -- Benjamin and Magdelene. I did not have that. I have John's wife Margaret Allion with a mother named Magdeline Rau. Both had mothers named Magdelene I guess? Maybe that's a common name in the Alsace-Lorain area.

I would love to see your cemetery photos. I have a photo of Benj. F. and Harriet (Krotcher/Krotzer) Freed that I can send you, as well as one of their farmstead in Michigan.

Have you been able to track down Harriet Krotzer's family of origin? I find a number of Krotzer's/Kratzer's in Snyder County, PA that are probably related, but I can't link her with any one family. She was most certainly Pennsylvania German -- my grandmother remembers that she had a very heavy, distinct accent in spite of being born in the United States.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Stephanie Charlot
mynaturalfamily@gmail.com

There are only two Philip Frieds as I recall and they are NOT siblings of Jacob Friedt, 1732, None of the families associated with Jacob Friedt (1732) used the name Philip. Again as I have never found or heard of. There is a wealth of knowledge available in the publications by Jim Freed PO box 864, Delaware OH 43015. Jim is very careful to document every piece of information and I have yet to find an error in his material. I highly respect his input to any family history.

Jacob Friedt born Aptil 1732 was the son of Paul/Paulus or Han's/Paulus Friedt born 31 Dec. 1682 or 1692 & died 30 Dec 1746. These records are found Freed in books but do not agree on the first name or birth year. Jacob's brother were Peter (b) Abt 1714 (d) 1791.(m)Barbara Reiff, 11 children.
Heinrich Friedt (b) Abt 1728 (d) Abt 1817 (m)Barbara, no record of Children, but he adopted some of his brother's children
He also had a sister Mary (b) Abt 1734.
There are land purchased by all 3 brothers that help identify them. There is no Philip I know of in this family.
One ov the Freed books lists a Philip and it looks like he is part of the same family but very careful reading and other cirmstances discount him as a brother but he could be an uncle, or cousin. We just can't prove it and as for our family we don't need to. He just confuses the research.

The records I carefully researched are Jacob Friedt (b) April 1732 (d) 30 Jul 1782 (m) Elizabeth Heffletrager or Häffelfinger in 1754 and had 8 children the last born 1777 before he died in Richland twp Bucks Co.,PA . The children were dispersed amoung his brothers, his wifes family and so forth. There are complete orphan court records.
Briefly his 9 children's names were :
Paul,(b)1756: Jacob Jr.(b)1757: Catherine,(b)1758: Mary,(b) 1759 John,(b)1760 Henry,(b)1768: Elizabeth (b)1774: Peter,(b)1775: Abraham,(b)1777.
I have records on all his children. My wife's line comes throu Paul.
E mail allencfredrickson@gmail.com if you want more information

Thank you!

Yes, it's Jacob Freed (1732-1782), married to Elizabeth Heffletrager that I'm attempting to figure out his decendents. There's so much bad information I'm finding on Ancestry.com family trees, that I'm trying to figure out where to find information that can be cited. I'm VERY new to genealogy and am not sure where to research or how to know when/if the information is correct. I had a book passed down to me on Freed History, but I've found multiple errors in it after only working on a dozen people and nothing is cited.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Judy

There is a Freed web site where one (I think it was Jacob) Freed migrated to West Virginia and his family grew to become very large. They even have a Freed Cemetery. It is very well documented and it continues to many generations.
There is an excellent chance your family came from them.
I don't have time this morning but it isn't too hard to find the web site on Ancestery. Perhaps someone else can point you right too it.
My wife is a full blooded Freed.

Stella, You seem to have a few Freeds connected to my GGGgrandfather Joseph Freed 1791-1850 that don`t belong to him. The Germantown Freeds although their names and dates are similar, they`re not directly related to Joseph`s Freed line. Joseph was born in 1791 in the household of Jacob Keely at Greshville, Pa.on Poplar Road [Douglass twp.], to Jacob Keely`s maid/housekeeper. Jacob and his wife Catherine Sassaman Keely were childless. Joseph Freed and his children after his marriage to Elizabeth Shuman [not Sholtz as you find at Family Search] were thought of by Jacob Keely as his family. Through DNA tests, we know Joseph`s unknown father was of the Lutheran Freed family of Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa. Joseph`s children William [my GGgrandfather], Augustus, Joseph jr., Henry, John,Jacob, Jonas and their only daughter Angeline were born in the Poplar Road house given to Joseph and Elizabeth Freed in Jacob Keely`s 1840 will. The Franconia Freeds that you have on your list are part of the large Mennonite Freed family and not related by blood to the Lutheran Freed family. We know this through the many DNA tests completed by both Freed families. If you could share with me your Freed ancestors name, I would be happy to help you sort your information and correct it. Verna Ensley on your list is my mother, her mother Anna Lavalley Freed, [daughter of Henry and Mary Elizabeth Servoss Freed of Galva, Il.] is my Grandmother. If you wish email me direct at boynton3@hotmail.com we can share information. Dave

Jacob Freed and Margaret Holdeman Yoder Freed

To Allen Fredrickson and any other Freed/Holdeman researchers this is a complete and unabridged transcription taken from the Holdeman Family History book 1, Second Generation pg. 107-110.
Margaret Holdeman was married in November 1827 to Samuel Yoder, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1804 and was the son of John and .....(Kauffman) Yoder. The John Yoder family had moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio in 1818. It has been said that the first time Samuel Yoder saw Margaret Holdeman he said, "I will have her for my wife; if not, it will not be my fault." They lived in Columbiana County, near Leetonia, Ohio. He died in November, 1835, at the age of 31 years. He is buried in the Leetonia Cemetery.
Margaret Holdeman was married the second time November 19, 1836 to Jacob Freed, born June 11, 1796 in Rockingham County, Virginia, the son of Jacob and Mary (Beidler) Freed of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who had moved to Rockingham County, and later returned to Pennsylvania, settling this time in Fayette County. Jacob Freed was seven years old when his parents returned to Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood.
While still a young man Jacob Freed came to Ohio on horseback, and purchased a farm in the heavy forest land of Paint Township, Holmes County, near Winesburg. He cleared the ground, and planted apple seeds from which he raised several orchards of choice fruit. Some of the grafts were later brought to Indiana. On March 15, 1821 Jacob married Anna Freed, who died May 25, 1834; they had two sons, John and Andrew Freed.
Jacob and Margaret (Holdeman, Yoder) Freed moved from Holmes County to Wayne County, Ohio, and on September 13, 1844 bought from Thomas Cook a parcel of land consisting of eighty acres. It was the north half of the southeast quarter of section four in Chester Township, and the deed was signed in the presence of William Carlan and Christian Holdeman.(ref: Harvey S Rutt, History of Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio, p. 138)
In the spring of 1851 Jacob Freed came to Indiana with the Weldys, who moved out at that time, to invest in land; he then returned to Ohio, and in the autumn of the same year the entire family came by teams and wagons, in a colony comprising eighteen persons, and were twelve days on the way. The roads were swampy and spongy, and chills and ague were the dread of the country. On the way some people would tell him that he could not get through certain places for there was no bottom. One man said there were holes so that the wagon would go down 'gasock'. Others said that they had better get their coffins made first, but in the face of all these remarks Jacob Freed journeyed on with his caravan until the destination was reached.
They settled in Locke Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, and purchased a pioneer farm one and one-half miles south of Wakarusa, on which was a little log cabin about eighteen by twenty feet in size. It was in the month of October when they arrived, and there was no barn on the farm except a small shed; there were also several log cabins scattered about, but there was not sufficient protection for stock from the cold winter blasts that were fast approaching. It was therefore necessary to build a barn that fall yet, and consequently the cutting of the great trees began at once. There was luckily a saw mill one mile west on the Asher Lockwood farm, making the distance comparatively short for the hauling of logs and building material. In a short time a substantial barn was erected, which was long a relic on the farm where Arthur Weldy now lives. Later the log house was displaced by a more commodious frame house. The eighty acre farm in Wayne County, Ohio, had in the meantime, on September 11, 1852, been sold to Peter Howman.
On October 13, 1852 Jacob Freed had purchased the southwest quarter of section one in township thirty-five (Locke), and also the north one-half of the southeast quarter of section two in the same township, for $1900 from Joel and Mary Farley. Margaret Freed purchased on July 30, 1853 from Joseph and Charity Pittman for $500 the north half of the south half of the southeast quarter of section two in Locke Township. These tracts of land were located one and one-half miles south of Wakarusa.
The neighbors were very sociable in those times. A particular instance of this was when men with ox teams would gather together in what they called a logging bee, and helped each other roll the immense logs on jam piles to burn.
The Longstreet school stood on Frank Clay's farm, but later one fourth mile east from where it was most recently located, and was called the Basswood schoolhouse. Before the rural schoolhouses had been built, the children went to school in the village then called Salem, now Wakarusa. The township road between Olive and Locke, however, was not yet laid out.
On Sunday the family forded the Baugo through the woods to the Holdeman Church, or went through the woods, over streams and ditches, and past the stone quarry to the Yellow Creek Church. They went in a wagon, and sometimes the greater part of the family did not even have a spring seat.
Christiana Freed Landis, a daughter of Jacob and Margaret Freed, from whose writings some of the information on Jacob Freed has been taken, has written reminiscences of the early days, and told how they used to get lost in the dense forest and wander around, thinking they were going straight ahead, but found the mark of a fallen tree or some other object, that they came back to the same place they had been before. She writes: "My father and I went nutting one day when I was a very small girl. We got our sacks full of nuts, then father said, 'Sis (as I was then called), I am lost; can you find the way home?' I said, 'Oh yes, this is the way home', and I took the lead. We came to a clearing, but father said he had never seen this place, so he took another course and came to our clearing. Whe he saw the buildings he couldn't believe it was our home until he saw the boys at work in the field. In those days the cattle were turned loose in the woods with bells on. These bells could be heard for several miles and were the means of finding the cattle. If the fellow who went after the cows stayed too late, a dinner horn was blown or a tree hit with a sledge, so they could find the way home. Generally the fellow would follow the cattle, which always took the right course for home."
Shortly after his marriage to Margaret Holdeman Yoder, Jacob Freed was ordained to the ministry, and was for more than thirty years a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church. After coming to Indiana he was one of the ministers at the Holdeman congregation. During the last five months of his life he suffered much, and was compelled to sit in his chair day and night. It was said that in all his afflictions he murmured not, but showed great patience and resignation to the will of God. He died April 1, 1868, aged 71 years, 9 months, 21 days.
Margaret Holdeman Yoder Freed was connected with the church in Elkhart County, Indiana, almost from the time of its first organization, and in all the trials and sorrows through which the church passed, and through the perilous times of dissention, and division, and falling away, the Lord preserved her, and enabled her to stand faithful to her trust in God, her home church, and her conference. She was an able and zealous defender of Bible truth and the doctrines of the church, and was always ready with a word of instruction and comfort in trial. When it was possible for her to attend the church services her place was never vacant. She was indeed one whose life to all appearance deserves more than a passing notice, and probably no sister in the church in Elkhart County was so well and so widely known.
She was one of those mothers in Israel whose work never seems finished; yet we have the blessed assurance that her dying words were a true expression of the condition of her soul, when she said, "I am now ready." She lived in widowhood nineteen years. After a lingering sickness of twelve weeks, she died May 30, 1887, aged 77 years, 4 months, and 13 days. She was buried in the Olive graveyard, where an unusually large number of relatives and friends assembled to attend the funeral services which were held by Amos Mumaw, Peter Y. Lehman, and John S. Coffman. At the time of her death she had 8 surviving children, 76 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren.

The story by Barbara Freed are in her words and she uses phrases we are not familiar with but we can understand her meaning. It can be found in a book written by Francis E Shaw 1921 called FRANCIS E Shaw and Other Related Matters, and it starts on page 295 and ends on page 361
There is a lot more to her story. I only copied a few interesting sections but there is a lot more describing daily life and other weird beliefs and problems her family struggled with.

What was the source of her story? If I recall correctly, Christiana's story was from the Holdeman Family History book.

John & Elizabeth Freed’s 3rd child, Barbara Freed, who married Jacob Messimore, articulated most of this story about her family. These are basically her words as transcribed by Francis E. Shaw. 1921 The items in parentheses were added.
John and Jacob Friedt traveled in a western schooner wagon pulled by four horses. They spent many restless nights in camp caused by the snapping, snarling and howling of the wolves.
Leaving Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, John and Elizabeth Freed, with their first child, Abraham, moved to (Rockingham Co.,) Virginia (either crossing or) passing down the Susquehanna river on the way. They settled about thirty miles south of the falls of Bull Run (Called Bull Creek at that time).
Here is a snake story told to the Freed’s by neighbors, which has been handed down by them for Posterity: Once upon a time a bull snake tried to pass up over the falls; and try as it might, it only got half way up. Being either afraid to return back down, or so determined to reach the summit that it remained at about that height, making a doleful bellowing noise that could be heard a great way off; and from this incident, the creek derived it’s name.
In Virginia John and his family resided on a farm, in a log house having a porch at one side. At the end of the porch was a room. The building, it was claimed, was haunted. They were told that sometime prior to when the they lived in the house, it had been occupied by a German liquor dealer who, it was claimed, defrauded his customers, for which he was supposed to have been compelled after his untimely death to return to the house and haunt it.
When the weather changed for rain or snow, a noise could be heard at night in the room at the end of the porch where he had kept his liquors. It sounded as if somebody was tapping on a barrel.
Another concern was the Freed children declared something jerked the covers from them at night while in bed in the loft; and finally refused to sleep there unless the parents slept there too.
Then the eldest son, Abraham, declared he saw a man of German appearance on the porch looking in at the kitchen window, and from where he was in the kitchen, he noticed that the phantom wore a red flannel shirt.
Being discontented they went back to Pennsylvania and settled in a county in which Jacob’s Creek flowed through their farm. (Jacob’s Creek is part of the boundary between Westmoreland and Fayette County.) During freshets (deluge of rain causing a flood) the creek often destroyed part of their crops, and if some of those happened to be cut, they were swept down the swollen channel. This was sport for the children but sorrow for the parents.
Still not being contented, and the territory west of the Ohio and above the mouth of the Kentucky river having been formed into a state called Ohio, John Freed decided to locate here and try his fortune in these wilds, So in the winter of 1811, John left his home on horseback for Ohio in search of land.
He was about five and a half feet tall, and slender; he had black hair, gray eyes and a long pointed nose, and a brave determined disposition, which showed when he set forth over newly cut pathways through forests, into a state sparingly settled, which he never had seen. Some of his food and part of the grain for the horse was carried in a saddlebag astride the horse. Very often when night came on and there was no house near, he camped by a fire he built to keep warm by and to keep wild animals away.
Upon arriving in West Twp., Columbiana County, after inspecting other lands along his route, he selected the northwest quarter of section fourteen, containing only one hundred fifty nine and six hundred acres, which he entered on his way home at the land office at Steubenville, 30 December 1811; and for which he supposed he had received a valid patent but it was defective. (He ended up with land in New Alexandria, Columbiana Co., Ohio.)
He was absent from his home in Pennsylvania about four weeks, during which period his family did not know if he was alive, or whether he had been killed by wild animals or met death in some other way.
The next fall John Freed accompanied by his two sons, Abraham and Henry, and James Waite (a neighbor’s son) came to Ohio in a Western Schooner drawn by four horses. It had a linen top and the English pattern dished wheels held in place by lynch pins. The Wagon bed was deep and higher at the ends than the sides, and painted dark blue. It had a small tool box annexed to the outside of the front. The lid of the box sloped toward the wagon tongue. A hasp and padlock protected the tools from burglars. When feeding their horses, the feed box rested on the wagon tongue, near the wagon box, with a horse on each side of the tongue, but hung at the back of the wagon when traveling.
Arriving at their destination, we think they left their horses and wagon at John Smith farm, who’s land joined Freed’s on the north and whose acquaintance they formed.
John, his two sons and James Waite soon had a hut built of poles and bark on Freed’s land where they lived till they had cleared land for their spring wheat and other spring crops.
While here they shot deer, wild turkeys, and other game, enough to keep them in meat, which the wolves scented. It made it necessary for them to keep fires around the camp at night to stay them off, as they became so bold that they bounded against the door and also gnawed it, trying to get inside to get at the meat. Many a restless night was passed in this camp caused by the snapping, snarling, and howling of the wolves, not knowing what minute they might break into the hut and kill them.
While preoccupied with clearing land, John Freed engaged Mr. Jacob Lower, who resided on section 2, to build a good sized hewn log house, to be ready for us and our family to move into in the spring. When the land was finally cleared and ready for planting, they went back to Pennsylvania with the wagon to prepare to move the family when spring came.
When the time arrived to move, the Freed family placed what few things they possessed into the wagon and hitching their four horses, two abreast, they left for their new home. Their sons taking turns driving the cattle along the back of the wagon. Nothing broke the monotony of their long and tiresome journey, except for the wild game they chanced to see or hear in the forest, that is until they began crossing the Ohio river at the ferry at Pittsburgh. The family with their goods, wagon and cattle, along with the boat’s crew, being all the flat (Bottom) boat (sometimes called broad horn) could handle at one time, they left their large black dog named “Major” to wait until the boat came back. As soon as the crew had pushed the boat some distance from land with their punt poles, Major jumped into the river and overtook the ferry boat and attempted to board the boat but was driven away by the crew. By several attempts he finally got partly on board. Which caused the boat to begin to tip and sink at that point, which caused the passengers to panic and the cattle to break loose and jump over the rail into the water. The dog was finally driven off, the boat righted itself, and a safe landing made on the Ohio side, where as the cattle were eventually rounded up onto the Ohio side.
When they finally were ready to continue the trip, it was about sundown. Notwithstanding, they resolved to leave as many miles between them and the river as they could, before camping for the night. Before they had gone far, they discovered they were being followed by three men who were acting suspiciously. When the men came in speaking distance, Abraham asked them what they wanted, and told them they had plenty of guns in the wagon, which they would use against them, if they continued the pursuit much farther. From that time on they followed slower till the Freed’s lost sight of them in the darkness that was settling throughout the forest.
They soon arrived at New Alexander Twp., arriving at John Smith’s home after dark. Smith being of a benevolent disposition, invited them to spend the night there and accompany them to their new home in the morning and assist them in unloading the wagon and setting the house in order. A friendly tie formed among the two families after that.
The house stood north and south and had a door at the east and west sides. Puncheon floors, a stone fireplace, mortared stick chimney, and a clapboard roof staid in place by weight poles which were kept in apart by knees which got their support from the eave-bearers. (Her words) The loft was entered by a ladder in one corner of the kitchen. The jams, built of stone, were used to keep the fat lamps and cooling utensils on when not in use.
The Freed’s being very industrious, soon had medium sized logs hauled together, then calling a logging bee, had a barn built. Not a bank barn. With the front to the north. It stood southeast of the house.
When John Freed came to Ohio to live he shaved off his beard by using his ax for a mirror, which he kept polished for that Musa Paradisiaca.
Wild game of various kinds prowled about their doors. Wild turkeys came into the yard in the winter to gather up the crumbs that was shaken from the table cloth.
Hoop, rattle, copperhead and many other species of snake super-abounded. Buckskin and homespun was worn and none of the children received new shoes before Christmas. John was a man who exercised great discipline in his family. A horn was blown for dinner and every-one responded promptly and only Dutch was used in family discourse. John Freed was a Whig.
All of John Freed’s families births were kept by memory, as John had burned the family Bible during the war of 1812 so the army could not know what males were in the family to draft into the army.
Shortly after arriving in Ohio Abraham Freed was sent in to the forest on their farm by his parents to gather the cows, when he was bitten in one of his legs by a rattlesnake. The family not knowing what to do, took the boy to the spring west of the house and stood him in it and made frantic efforts to wash the venom out of the wound till the water was very bloody and the boy almost frozen, and writhing in pain. The limb kept swelling and the swelling increased up the leg. Finally they carried him into the house and placed him in bed, where he was left to his fate. The news soon circulated among the settlers and Mr Ross, (a herb doctor) heard of the accident and started for the Freed’s to see the boy. By the time he arrived it was near midnight. As quick as he saw the condition of the boy who was moaning and screaming from pain, he ordered the family to quickly get him some fresh sweet milk, while he went into the door-yard (back yard) and gathered some plantain (musa paradisiaca) and horehound leaves. Of each of these he took a handful and steeped them in the milk. When done, he tied the herbs on the wound and gave the boy part of the milk in which the herbs were simmered to drink. The swelling had by this time reached the boys body (the whole leg) and made it heard for him to breathe. It was not long after Mr Ross applied the treatment till the boy felt better and fell asleep from which he did not awake till about daylight. The family were so glad over what Mr Ross had done that they felt scarcely able to thank him sufficiently for it. Had Ross not come Abraham would have died before morning.
When Abraham Freed reached his majority (full height) he was five feet three.
It was a practice among the pioneers of West township to select two persons in their vicinity and have them go from cabin to cabin disguised as Pelt Nick and Kriss Kringle on Christmas Eve. The origin of this practice leads back to the time when the Bishop of Myra, who died in A. D. 326 left money at the window of a poor widow the night before Christmas.
On a Christmas Eve, as pre-arranged by Mr. And Mrs Freed, while they were sitting by the fire by the fire place, in came Pelt Nick and Kriss Kringle. The latter carried apples, home-made cakes, and chestnuts in a sack, and was garbed in female attire, and wore a mask and flax wig. Pelt nick wore a flax wig and a man’s garb, and had on a mask resembling the head of a horse. From what represented to be the mouth of this mask a strip of red flannel protruded about three inches to represent a tongue. Pelt Nick carried a whip. After entering the Freed Cabin, they went to where the children were asleep, awakening them. As Pelt Nick stood at the side of John who was fast asleep, he drew the red flannel tongue across his face to arouse him. On opening his eyes and seeing Pelt Nick, it frightened him so he did not know what to do, when his parents told him to get up quick and help his brothers and sisters who were already up, gathering up the gifts which Kriss Kringle was busy scattering over the floor. While the children were deeply engaged gathering up the presents, Pelt Nick hit John a light stroke on the back, which startled him, so that he commenced backing away from Pelt Nick in the direction of the fireplace, and had it not been for his father catching him, he would have walked backwards right into the fire.
